  • My second ever attempt to paint outdoors, en plein air, leads me to a picturesque nature reserve on the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea.
In this episode: I race against time (but mostly against the cold) to get a painting done before my hand freezes and I make a disappointing discovery in my coffee flask...
Join me every week as I voyage out into the beautiful island landscape of Bornholm, Denmark to challenge myself and improve my painting skills.

Terrific under painting. I appreciate your efforts dealing with the cold. I live in Canada, so I really know cold.

Yeah you've got proper cold in Canada, this was probably a pretty warm day for you... 😉 Thanks, it was just the standing still that got to me. Do you paint plein air yourself in the winter over there?

I really admire how much you managed to paint out in the cold! The painting came out really nicely.
Plain air painting have a different feel to them, just by the fact that you took the effort to went there to paint. I think it's a magical and peaceful experience, but honestly I'll be terriffied to stay out in the open by myself. There is something frightening about the quiet and empiness. Glad you have a crow friend to keep you company ♡

Hi there, thank you 😊 It was a really great experience and so peaceful out there. You're completely right, plein air pieces somehow feel different, and I agree it must be because the painter was out 'feeling' everything, sounds, weather etc rather than just painting what they see in a photo or on a screen (nothing wrong with that, just different 😉). And yes quiet is very loud out there.. but I love it, and there's always a crow or two about. Do you do plein air painting yourself?

@@danielorourkeartist Unfortunately, I don't paint outside. However I believe you're right. The fact that you can feel the temperature, weather and texture gives you a better understanding, what you paint. It really fascinates me. Good luck with another painting ♡

I also love painting and drawing outdoors, but I mainly only do so only in the summer months now. I used to paint much more outdoors when I lived in Switzerland and also in the UK, but It's very difficult here in Denmark with the long dark (and damp cold) winters. I get much more done working from photographs taken onsite...(and only feel a bit guilty.. ) Glad to find another painting Brit in Dk.. :)

Hi Mark, great to hear from a fellow Brit painter in Denmark! 😀 We must be a pretty rare breed over here... but funnily enough I've actually met another brit artist living here on Bornholm, what are the chances... Yeah the winter is pretty brutal over here hey, I'm looking forward to the spring alright. I know what you mean, I paint from photos a lot too but I just felt I wasn't really progressing so thought I'd go and try to freeze myself to death to see if that helped... Thanks for getting in touch 😊👍 Are you based in Billund?

Yes, Billund based…some great grey skies here..😂 working full time at Lego, so painting is restricted to evenings and weekends…
