Painting GREEN GRASS in a SUMMER SCENE: en plein air in OILS
มุมมอง 306ปีที่แล้ว
I've always avoided painting those really bright greens that are ubiquitous in the summer months. Partly because I don't really like the colour but also because I was wary about pushing the values so high in the shadows to match the bright highlights. In this episode, I face those fears and paint the green fields behind my house, with the help of a painting from a Danish artist and my daughter,...

PERSEVERING through PLEIN AIR: what to do when a painting GOES WRONG
มุมมอง 527ปีที่แล้ว
One of the things I've learnt while plein air painting is that sometimes a painting can go wrong. For whatever reason, the painting can end up looking like a dog's dinner and you're left with a choice: a) launch it out the window, or, b) try and make it work. I've tried both and although the first option is extremely cathartic, the second option is a harder, but definitely more enriching experi...

    Very nice work. Love how you pushed the colours, really bringing out those lovely oranges and purples. A tricky painting (hmm...aren't all paintings tricky?!), not least because the values at the point where the ocean and distant clouds meet on the right half are pretty similar, but you seemed to make it work beautifully by retaining subtle blues and oranges on either side of the horizon and emphasising those pale vertical reflections. What are you painting on?

    • @danielorourkeartist
      @danielorourkeartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Marvin 😊 yes it was a tricky one! I tend to soften up the horizon anyway as I the hard line tends to divide the painting in two (strange how that's more noticeable in a painting rather than a photo). I'm painting on linen glued to a cradled hardboard panel 😊

    I was looking forward to seeing how you got on with those greens, and I think it's a resounding success. I can really feel the warm sunlight on that grass. Also, I love the backlit effect you've achieved on your daughter, seems to work well because of the contrast with those lovely cool blues and purples you have on the shadow side, which also serve as a nice counterpoint colour for all those greens. Well done for pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Any more 'green' in the pipeline (especially now summer is here!) or have you had your fill for now? :) Bw, Marvin

    What I find most interesting is that the greens in the photo, though very muted, are clearly green. However, your green for those areas doesn't look green at all, more of a mix of muted browns and purples with perhaps the merest hint of grey/green here and there. And it works so well: your finished painting is much more interesting than the photo! I can tell I am going to learn a lot from watching you paint, thank you for sharing with us. Bw, Marvin (not sure why I am called Medusa on here, I really should change it!)

    • @danielorourkeartist
      @danielorourkeartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah hi Marvin, now I know who it is 😊 thanks a lot, it's great to get a fellow artist's feedback - yes I think what also contributed to that effect was the burnt sienna wash in the background, it seemed to tint those greens towards the warmer side.. but worked out ok I think. I'm not a big fan of greens next to purples so maybe I've also been subconsciously avoiding green! I've just done a plein air piece today though of a grassy field in blazing sunshine so that I could confront my fear of green.. I'll be uploading that next Sunday

    • @danielorourkeartist
      @danielorourkeartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Medusa, that's very kind and encouraging 😊 yes portraits are very daunting and I believe they are the ultimate test for an artist- I struggled big time with this one, believe me. The best advice I would have for you as someone who hasn't tried a portrait before is to learn the basics of proportion- so you can achieve a decent likeness, as without this, no amount of rendering will change whether it looks like the person or not. Once you've got that part down, then you can begin to look at values as you would with a landscape. But just go for it- I think the key to success is throwing yourself off the deep end and making a mess but then looking carefully at what you've done right and done wrong and correcting from there. And doing that over and over again 🙂

    • @medusayuk5854
      @medusayuk5854 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielorourkeartist Thank you for this further advice. Considering your advice, I guess that pencil sketching faces to quickly become more familar with the basics of proportion would be a good idea? And, yes, somewhere in amongst all I think about improving as a painter, I know that just diving in and making a mess is best. It takes a while to get used to the idea that failure is an essential part of progress, and not every painting has to be a masterpiece. Thank you, all the very best.

    The subject reminded me of a stream in a Devon valley just before the area became tidal. The steep valley sides and a flat and marshy valley bottom. This was an interesting exercise where the golden light and bright green grass did not appear in the painting and underlines the freedom of the artist to create an painting. The paint it an leave it maxim was just right here, so easy to ruin something when trying to improve it! As with the sunset, there is a Turner-esque quality to the finished work which allows the eye to engage with imagination! ❤

    • @danielorourkeartist
      @danielorourkeartist ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Ian 🙂 It definitely helps to let it sit there for a while before jumping in and trying to 'fix it'. And yes I tend to avoid the bright greens as I actually don't like the colour! So I tend to lean my greens toward the yellow ochre side... Devon has some lovely valleys alright

Excellent painting, and I can tell I will learn from watching your guides.

    • @danielorourkeartist

      You're welcome 😊 and thank you. Yes, I really try to overcompensate with the colours I use, especially in sunsets- I add just a bit more pure paint than I'm comfortable with, like for example: in the yellow clouds I would naturally want to paint them more pale so I add a bit more cadmium yellow to really make the colour pop. I've found it's worth being bold and pushing those colours a bit further than you're comfortable with. 😉
