I was blue in this game, and it was a pleasure playing with you! There were definitely a few trades I would have accepted if I hadn’t recognized AnotherWon. Keep up the great videos!
Nice job Brooks! I was wondering if you knowing it was me affected any of your decisions… they were good trades. You placed well and stayed in the game. Good luck during season 5 and appreciate your support here immensely - DD
@@thistamndypo Knowing your opponent is key in strategy. I know it's just a game but the point is winning; so if you know someone can abuse those 1% trades you don't trade with them.
You mean Red, the mediocre player who accepted exceptionally good trades for Dandy Drew in the middle game, and omitted stealing from Dandy when he was in the lead? Oh yea, I am sure that you prefer playing against top-tier players, who track your cards, play perfectly, table-talk masterfully, and have 50% win rate. Nothing more enjoyable than losing to good players. 😋
Thanks for the content. I never played Catan, but my SO recently played with some of her coworkers and because I looked into it on TH-cam, you got recommended. Great videos. Looking forward to actually play!
That’s awesome Jonathan. I’m excited to hear how the game goes once you start playing. Please keep us updated! I also have a masterclass for the start of the game on my channel. Might be helpful for you - DD
2 questions: a) do you have a discord server that you use to engage with viewers/other catan players? and b) how do you determine when to ask for 2-1s or take a 1-1 trade? obviously rare resources, number of cards both parties are holding, etc come into play, but i feel like there are bunch of nuances to trading that people would love to see you point out during games :) keep up the content, its brilliant!
Hey there! Yes, a discord server is being worked out and there will be an invite/opening very soon. Stay patient on that one… it’s going to be big. The aspect of when to push for 2-1s is a really a mixture of a few things. Ultimately, it comes down to the value of the trade in that moment. If you know someone’s hand and what they are trying to accomplish with a trade, then it’s a question of who needs this trade more? If I know their hand is stuck without trade and they will run the risk of 7ing out if they pass, then I have leverage to push for an extra card. On the other side, if someone has 3 cards in their hand, and they produce the resources they are asking for but it just hasn’t roll, then they will be less inclined to make that trade happen. There is also something to be said about trading with certain players early to establish some kind of trading partnership. Getting on someone’s good side in ranked is a huge meta skill that almost no one talks about because it’s such a nuanced concept. This is why I might take an slightly unfavorable position to not upset a player and build an advantage over time with that move. At the end of the day, the answers to everything is “it depends”. Hope that helps! - DD
haha yessss, it definitely was the most insightful way to frame a "it depends", cheers man! cant wait for the discord, gonna be fun to join and engage/work with you and other subs there :]
Loving your vids. When are you planning on posting another master class vid. I would also like to see a game with little to now ore. Had one like that the other day and it was a huge fight for road.
Thank you for the kind words. There are currently only 3 episodes recorded for the masterclass. Might upload the 3rd episode tomorrow. Long term, I want to revamp the entire series in terms of production and value. Good things are coming soon! ;)
Man… people do such weird shit so often. Red was baffling every step of the way. Those greedy first placements that totally screw up the whole board really piss me off. Sigh.
If I buy a dev, I run the risk of getting rid of my only wheat while on the 2 wheat. It was main priority for me to get to the 5 wheat ASAP in that moment. You could buy a dev depending on your risk tolerances.
I personally don't think red was unjustified in hitting you so much. Red could've anticipated that overblocking you would force you to feed road to green, hurting your win condition giving red time to catch up. And to be honest there were many times where you were very close to winning with road. Maybe they could've blocked the 10 once to see if blue had a knight, but it such a close difference, I don't think you can blame your opponents for blocking you. Especially since on Colonist you have to assume your players are beginners.
I agree with most of the blocks and robs, for sure. I made sure to be clear about that during the game. That being said, I do think red got a little bit carried away towards the end… even starting to solo block green who was holding road against blue and myself. At a certain point, you have to adjust and adapt since blue with 2 vps and longest road is a problem. Of course, I am biased in this situation and never want to be blocked lol
@@dandydrew No yeah I think you're right. The blocks against green was certainly a wrong block. Those two blocks against blue could've been game changing.
@@dandydrew The outcome of a Catan game relies heavily on players' perception of how strong everyone's position is. I think this gives more validity to the 'come from behind' approach. At the same time, beginner players will be worse at coordinating, so if one player surges ahead, that player will likely win. It's hard to predict how players on colonist will be. I think some of the strategy is in knowing players though.
This was the unlickest game I have ever seen any one play. You are on every number except 12. You had a stretch there of 7 after 7 and 12 after 12. Holy crap
I notice that the number layout of this board is the EXACT same except for a moved desert, to your last placements video you posted. So they aren't actually randomized at all huh?

It happens. Red also got a bit unlucky to pull only knights but the way they place was sub-optimal. That setup NEEDS a port to be effective long term.
