this is probably the most underrated channel on TH-cam. U guys do a damn good job presenting facts and noting speculations. Not many channels can say that!
Yeah, shame on me for not once leaving a comment like this in the last two weeks or so. I found the channel recently and am quite a happy subscriber. Usually well researched and often curious, but without the clickbaity 'thing you didn't know/couldn't imagine' title. I like it very much.
Today I Found Out It's always easier (and to some people, more 'fun') to point out the bad. Well entertained people are like... people who had a really nice dinner. They're at least a bit in a happy place on their very own and it seems to be harder in that situation to remember or find the motivation to say something thoughtfully nice to the person who provided the entertainment. With TH-cam, most people don't stay until that absolutely tiny high is over, but are long gone by then. Not to mention the fact that there's no social pressure to say thanks from a lack of a person they're facing. But you can trust that the likes you receive are only a fraction of how many people could have given a thumb up for having been well entertained, while the dislikes are quite accurately depicting how many viewers didn't like the video or the channel or the presenter. ;-)
"He was to produce a resilient hybrid shrimp that could withstand the rigors of the 20th century mail-order marketplace." Perhaps the best sentence ever uttered.
I had Sea Monkey kits a couple times when I was younger. I knew that they weren't going to look like the creatures in the ad, but I was still disappointed with them. My biggest complaint was that they never grew big enough to actually really see them. One of the kits included a small tank with magnifier bubbles molded into the sides and using them, I could just barely make them out. Otherwise they just looked like specs of dust floating around in the water. They also never lived very long even though I followed the directions exactly. I once saw actual brine shrink in a pet shop(?) and while still tiny by objective standards, they were several times larger than any of the "Sea Monkeys" I ever had.
You might want to try again. I've had them and they were very visible. Like mini shrimp. I had one that was big, his name was Cornelius. 🦐 He was a smart dude. He owned a ship.
I know this is a weird thing to say about an episode about sea monkeys but this episode was very well made and I enjoyed it very much keep up the good work.
Well I would love to answer that question. The reply button is there to spark a conversation or even more radically believe it or not... reply to a comment. So I'm replying to you that I wanted to give Simon an idea for a video that I'm sure plenty of people would be interested in. I guess what really prompted me to say as much to you is that I know there are going to be a bunch of people (i.e just like you) to blurt out the answer, and I'm hoping that just maybe they will read my reply to and save there self some time. But I can only hope.
I remember when I was a kid (40 or so years ago) there was something in the paper or a magazine or something that said you could order Sea Monkeys and they had these really cute pictures of these "creatures" - looked so cute and I thought it would be fun to have "pets" like that. So I ordered them. When I found out what they really were, I was like "Ew! Yuck."
Most comments from the official Today I Found Out account are Daven talking (me, as it turns out ;-)) Simon **usually** comments via his own Simon Whistler handle, though he does occasional comment under TIFO. But as a general rule, it's usually me commenting via this account.

Hey, what about Aqua Dragons? They're brine shrimp as well but I've tried both them and Sea Monkeys more than once and the Sea Monkeys do well while the Aqua Dragons barely even make it out of their eggs. Would be interested in an unbiased piece on what makes them different. (The company behind Aqua Dragons weren't helpful when I approached them about their brine shrimp failing)
Apparently the Fascinations company briefly reintroduced the Killifish egg idea under their "Magic Instant Fish" line in approximately 2009. Haven't found anyone that still stocks them, so it's very possible they stopped selling them again shortly thereafter.
Oh my, I've been subscribed to this channel for half a month. Did you realize in the last 30, more like 10 days, your subscriber rate went soaring above +3,000% of your normal subscriber rate per month.

I kind of wanted these as a kid, but on some level I knew they wouldn't be as interesting as advertised so never ordered them out of a comic book advert.
We used them in some bio presentation back in high school, early-mid 2000s. I'm sure in the 50s and 60s they might have been interesting for kids, but it's a fairly boring gimmick in my era.
I remember the ads for the sea monkeys. I finally got some when I was 12. They lasted about a week before the cat knocked the fish bowl over. Have you looked into Tardigrades, aka "water bears"? They're even hardier than sea monkeys - like ludicrously so. "83 degrees Celsius above absolute zero" sounds really weird. I think what you mean is 83 degrees Kelvin, 83 degrees above absolute zero (allowing for the assumption that the size of a degree is either K or C as they are the same size) or -190 degrees C.
