My 71 914 was the best handling car ever. Drove like a dream. Was made to sell it when we had our first child. Got 2x what I paid for but would love to have it today. My Great Dane loved to drive in it when I took off the top. Good old days

Wonderful. One thing i asked myself was: How do your girls at home actually react when you come home with a treasure like that? I want to find one of those 914s! Really, I would gladly trade my 924S for a groovy, little 914. I don't care a lick about the "not a real Porsche" attitudes out there. They are just so cool! I also love those mk I sciroccos! The look of those four round headlights make it for me!

I used to have a 1976 Porsche 914/4 2.0 in northern Michigan and I loved it. The phrase "cornering in rails" really applies to this car. Please keep up the good work. Thank you.

BTW I had a 77 pearl mettalic(gold) Scirocco with lobster interior. It had a dial a cam, lowered springs, cage for oil pan, oil cooler flex dam front spoiler etc. It may be one of the earliest modified MK1s in the US because a friend started a business importing parts in 1978. I sold it to the sales manager at the VW dealer in 1980 or 81 in Albuquerque. I would sure like to know if that car is still around. It was still in new condition then. I'll send you guys some pictures if you tell me how.

Eins zwei drei... Gary is counting in deutsch!?!? Btw. The steering wheel at the rocco is called "spucknapflenkrad" it meens something like "spittoon steering wheel" (no joke) and its very popular at golf1, roccos and old watercooled volkswagen in germany.
The 914 with the doors and parts is an realy nice package. The body looks very good in the Video. Wish you a lot of fun with the car.

This is basically what I'm going through except with Austin Healey Sprites. My dad had a 58 and a 59 and a house, basement and garage full of parts. My next step is simply to bag and tag everything onto shelves by area. Shocks over here, engine blocks down below, internal components over here, camshafts over there etc etc etc. I bought 500 wired tags, but I'm sure I'll need more. Assuming I get this done by end of year, i'll at least be able to break up the restore work, body work on Tuesday, part restoration on Thursday. It all would have gone to a recycling yard otherwise, just like that Porsche

I had a Rocky 13 Scirocco many years ago. It was a GREAT car. Fun to drive, 5 speed, once drove it at 80 mph for 8+ hours from Colorado to Oklahoma and got better than 45 mpg. That was a visit to my sister, who soon went out and bought an identical Scirocco!
Sadly, my Scirocco got rear ended by a drunk driver in a full size van. I was stopped behind another van at a red light, nowhere to go. I saw him coming at about 35 or 40 mph in my rearview mirror but couldn't do anything but brace for impact. My beloved Scirocco nearly folded in half and was totalled.
I went a couple Jetta GLi after that... 1st one was great, but last one was an automatic (married someone who didn't like to drive a stick). That was our family's last VW. Our family's first was a small window Beetle we had in England in the late 1950s and drove all over Europe. My own 1st car was a '64 Beetle, completely stock, with the sliding sunroof. Bought my girlfriend at the time a matching one!
Always wanted, but never had a 914 (or any Porsche, for that matter). Unfortunately, I've been mostly unimpressed with VW since around 2000. But those older ones sure we're a lot of fun.
P.S. You need a bigger garage!

Couldn’t help but notice the angleton tire center shirt. I live in LJ and work in angleton. I just pulled a 61 dune buggy out of a garage in angleton that had been sitting since 87. Excellent condition. It’s strange how local people can be and never cross paths.

I feel the same way and bought my 914 in 98 cleaned it up and drove it for 6 months. The 914 got put on the backburner, and I've had 911,924 944,928 but the only one I kept was the 914. Now 24 years later I have a 350 hp 1.8t powering the 914 and a boxtser transmission to shift and its like driving a supercar. If you can dream it you can do it!

Hey guys , I just stumbled across your channel a couple weeks ago ,I’ve been a big Vw fan all my life , dad had 75 bay window , I owned type 3 wagon ,oval beetle, Manx ,etc . I just want to let you know I love reliving my Vw days through you guys, and I’m watch from Australia, and also down here in Australia there is a big Vw following, keep up the great work guys . Just another note there is a ozzy couple driving there bay window all over Oz and I mean everywhere they have a TH-cam channel called ‘Karstan and Maxine ‘ , it’s a great watch and you’ll get an idea of what remote Oz is like 👍. I know the feeling!! While not vw, I'd bought 3 separate collections for a Sirroco era import; from experience- IF you have to use the biggest moving van rental more than 3 times, you MAY have a problem.
So - humor in shared empathy,
22 engines,19 trans, 20 cyl heads(of 4 different valve sizes),14 doors, etc, etc, etc. Not counting the complete cars. Could line the walls of a 40x60 building.

That looks like the earliest model 914, as it has the 1.7 liter Type IV engine, based on the badge. The 2.1 engine is the best Type IV engine to start with.

I bought a '76 914 when I lived in Germany back in the 70's. The German's told me it was just a VW with a funny cover but I loved that car anyway. I wanted to keep it forever and shipped it back to the US when I moved home. Unfortunately in the 80's it caught fire and was totaled. Rather than replace the 914, my wife insisted we take the insurance money so we could buy a stationwagon since we were starting a family. That was such a sad day for me when we bought the stationwagon. I refused to even look at the stationwagon for the longest time.
Ah well sometimes life has other plans for you. Maybe you can get a 914 now 😎

Nice save. I literally dug my '57 Baja out of a junkyard in San Antonio a decade ago, was sunk hub deep.. Very rewarding. But if it sits much longer 🤦♂️ it may need another dig out.lol

What a find! Gary - you don’t have a problem, I just love you all! And I have only 3 VWs so a way to go - but one is a Scirocco and one is a Vanagon (T25 know here in the UK). If you ever want to come to SW Scotland you can stay at mine for sure, just let me know.
