Fighting your parents over your career choices | Us & Them | DW Documentary

  • When it comes to careers and dream jobs, the ideals of parents and their children are often very different. Whether in the case of a young crypto investor in India or a boxer in the US - when choosing a profession, family stress is pretty much guaranteed. A generational conflict?
Alyssa, a young Asian-American woman from California, quit her secure office job to realize her dream: to become a boxer. She’s prioritizing her personal happiness over financial security - to her parents’ chagrin. As Alyssa’s first fight finally approaches, initially she decides not to tell her family. When she eventually “confesses” to her plans, this triggers an emotional disagreement and the tears flow.
In India, the young crypto investor Manuel is anything but risk-averse with his digital start-ups. Although he’s already earned a million dollars, he’s also lost quite a bit too. For his mother, this is a source of constant worry. She’d rather he followed a more stable and less risky career - after all, one day he’ll be looking after her.
Why are parents so worried about money and security? Will Alyssa and Manuel be able to persuade their families to accept their choice of career? It might seem unconventional to the older generation, but for young people it’s not a big deal to try out new professions. And above all, they’re not about to sacrifice their own dreams on the altar of financial stability. In view of such change, conflicts are unavoidable. Can they be resolved?

Thank you DW documentary for capturing my story! Starting out, I always searched for stories similar to the one I was about to create but could never find one. I hope this helps someone out there. An update for the viewers: I am now 3 fights in, my career as a boxing trainer has blossomed, I’m at a new gym and have been continuing to train hard. Your family coming together at the end to support you in pursuing your dream brought tears to my eyes.
I strongly believe that when parents believe in their kids and support them, kids learn to believe in themselves - not just in pursuing a passion but also in their ability to make adequate decisions for themselves. It’s that spirit - the self confidence and resilience to get up after failures and keep trying (whether in the same pursuit or in deciding-of their own accord-to change to other pursuits when and if that’s right for them ) that ultimately serves people best in seeking success and fulfillment.

Wow, what a girl. I understand what your parents were trying to say. I think they just want to make sure you’re safe and they didn’t want to start sounding like their own parents trying to be to explicitly involved in you finding your path. I’d rather you did something else coz I think you’re beautiful and sweet and you’d stand a great chance of losing that on this chosen path. But that’s just my uninformed opinion.
Whatever you do decide, don’t feel sad anymore about wanting to prove that you were stronger or bigger than you physically looked. It’s you, and on the other end of that spectrum also lies similar issues. I’ve never felt the need to reply this detailed to someone but I was also surprised and lucky that one of the subjects of the video is available to be communicated with directly. You’re raised well, and you’re loved. Never forget or undervalue that. Much love. Tc

The reason why the parents want financial stability is because they've experienced it first hand.
The kids haven't, so they're comfortable taking risks.

When you are younger than 30, then you can always start again, learn from your mistakes, and do better in the future.
When you are 60, then it is very hard to start again after a failure. Sometimes it is impossible.
In my view, that is the difference.

Regret are easier to live with when you caused them yourself. However if later in life you regret not doing x thing because you followed your parents those kinds of regrets are very hard to forget. You will always feel like it was the other person’s fault you didn’t pursue something you wanted.

I understand how these people in the documentary feel because I am also in this situation. My father has a construction business where he wants both me and my brother to work in it but the problem is I want to pursue my dreams which is tech. Talking about the subject is not always easy with him but always keep it real with him. I already have my diploma in computer networking and a certification (CompTIA A+). Now I'm going for the CCNA ( another certification). I am doing whatever it takes to finally get my career going because at the end of the day I don't see myself working as secretary for the construction business. Things can get very tough.😑😑

I’ve heard more regret stories from Americans who didn’t have the parents to give them pressure to educate themselves and strive for financial excellence than Americans who had the pressure. Never have I heard someone say, “I regret reaching the top.” Life allows one to reach the top and then relax and do what one wants. It’s always better to challenge yourself even if part of your life you don’t feel it’s you. That’s what exploring who you really are requires

Over the years I would observe them in the living room, where we kept books and toys of all kind. The same kid would reach for the medicine set , chalk, or animals books all the time. They became doctors, chefs, vets, computer programmers, all dictated by their DNA. The title shows the prejudice and perspective of the producer/team. And of course the demographic of the viewers, folks with time to burn watching TH-cam videos.
Meanwhile the parents just work(ed) their a$$es off to raise these ingrates, made sacrifices, did their best. They are only human, not superheroes.
And the parents are now older and can't keep up with the rate of change in the modern world, especially tech but also social norms.
So give your parents a freakin break!
Live your life on your terms - but treat them and their advices with respect - consider they love you and are concerned for you.
There's enough kids end up dead in a ditch (metaphorically if not literally).
Youth provides the courage but rarely the wisdom, so stop to think not just act out like a resentful child.
