How to Load a Heavy E-Bike ~ This Simple Technique is the Game-Changer

  • I have owned the KAC bike rack for fat tire bikes for almost 2 years now. I love this bike rack. This rack makes transporting my 2 Lectric XP e-bikes simple. In the course of owning this bike rack, I have developed a simple and easy technique to load my heavy e-bikes. My bikes weigh around 60 lbs each. My technique is so simple that most anyone can load their heavy bikes. Young, old, weak, it doesn't matter, this technique will work for anyone. The KAC bike rack and it's features help make this possible.

    Steve, you don't even need the rack at all, do this way:
    1) fold the pedal; 2) fold the bike and keep the front wheel parallel to the rear wheel;
    3)roll the bike on a dog ramp directly onto the trunk.
    Keeping front wheel parallel to the rear wheel is very important, this way the folded pedal can freely rotate in the narrow space between the two wheels when the bike is being rolled on its rear wheel.
    I did this with my Heybike Mars, so long the pedal on your bike can be folded, you can do this way.
    Just checked youtube videos about Lectric XPs bike, the pedals on these bikes can be folded, so you can do this way, no need the heavy rack.

      Absolutely no difference. Use same method for both bikes. Just load front tire first, it serves as a pivot point. When removing, take off back tire first.

    Can you remove the wheel bases off the rack

  • @danbuckles2745
    @danbuckles2745 ปีที่แล้ว

    You don't put a heavy bike on the outer rack it has to go on the inner part as to bounce less. Once you get it on the rack you can lift the front tire into the slot and then lift the back into the back slot. I don't know if the bar will be in the way on this type of rack and if it can be pushed down horizontally so you can do it but you can do this with a Thule or Kuat which I have. And it's a good idea to pull the rear brake lever so the bike won't roll backwards as you lift it on to the rack before you move it to the back part.

    • @SteveSherron
      @SteveSherron  ปีที่แล้ว

      What you say is correct but overkill for my purposes. The bar can be pushed down. My method is to show a weaker or older person how to load a heavy e-bike onto the carrier. After that, they can fiddle with it all they want.

    • @danbuckles2745
      @danbuckles2745 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteveSherron It's safer to load something closer to the back than to have it sitting out where it will bounce that's all I'm saying. More information is better than a little.

    My Question is, will this work with a STEP-Throug Bike?

    • @SteveSherron
      @SteveSherron  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I could answer your question. I think it would actually work. On the middle post you have that hook that slides down on top of the bike bar. That hook can slide all the way down until it clamps over the bar even on the step-thru bike. Thats why I think this rack would work for the step thru but can't be totally sure.

  • @goldengirls0125

    Would this work for a Hyper-scorpion ebike that weighs 100 lbs?

    • @SteveSherron
      @SteveSherron  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say yes. I carry both my e-bikes on the rack all the time and combined they easily weigh 125+ lbs.

    • @goldengirls0125
      @goldengirls0125 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteveSherron i just was told it doesn’t work like that and its per bike and it would be too much weight. My bike weighs 90 lbs without battery. I have to use the one made for motorcycles but they don’t thave an arm support so they make me nervous

  • @lostmykeysagain

    You can improve this technique by locking the rear brake and popping a wheelie - then pivot the bike (still in a wheelie state) onto the rack. When unloading, also lock that rear tire when it is grounded and pivot the bike’s front wheel of the rack using the wheelie technique. Cheers!

    My 67 year old mom has one of these and it’s literally going to kill her trying to get it on and off her car. My stepdad was so excited to get one of these bikes and got one about a month before he suddenly passed away. I think my mom sees it as a connection to him in some way, but I’m seriously concerned for her and I wish this stupid bike would fall off the rack the next time she tries to take it somewhere. I’m sure I’m yelling into the void but if anyone knows of any kind of winch or lift technique to load/offload these things please point me in that direction.

    • @SteveSherron
      @SteveSherron  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I showed you in the video, a person not very strong can put it on and take it off the rack because at any time you are only lifting half the weight of the bike. I don't know of an easier way.

      @@SteveSherron I figured out after watching through that she wasn’t tilting the stand down, it was in the horizontal locked-in position. I sent her your video and am hoping that’ll help in the meantime. I’m thinking of spending the money on a hydraulic/electric lift for her just to make sure she’s not always straining herself and so I know she’s not going to overdo it. She’s had rotator cuff problems for my whole life and while I admire her tenacity in go-go-going, I don’t want her to cause herself more physical damage if she insists on keeping the bike. Thanks for the demo video and the response 💚
