Gatling guns are tricky as you need a clear line of fire not to shoot your men in their backs. I found out this in the hard way when I started playing FotS in March...
Fots is a lot better than units in empire when it comes to friendly fire. In fots units actually will hesitate to fire if friendly units are in the way. The easiest example is with cannons when depressing the shot to hit the enemy would hit friendlies the cannons will not fire. Empire on the other hand units will shoot through friendlies like they don’t even exist and slaughter them in the process.

After reading your comment I googled the battle...yeesh, I'm beginning to understand how the British and everyone else with guns conqured so much stuff in 1800s-early 1900s.
as can be calculated from the ending screen, nearly 250 guys died to friendly fire. almost as much as in the melee with the enemy. you dont need to pore over the video looking for examples.
I may have missed it cause I was jumping intervals through the video, but it would have been awesome if you did a slowmotion cross shot as the ashigaru run into a line of fire.
The way to win as the Melee troops in that kind of battle is to form them into a column of men so that by the time one breaks it is to late they all get in close enough to kill.

The AI is more likely to run when at a range disadvantage. A similar manner when fighting players is literally reserve half your army, making them veterans with more experience. Hide them in the forest so the enemy player doesn't realize the difference. Spear wall and hold off as long as possible. With a general to rally is best. What most players do not realize is committing to battle drains your stamina as if running. With a fatigued army, you just need to trigger chain route, & checkmate.
Hi, I was hoping anyone could help me. I bought the FOTS expansion a while ago and now the game crashes after each battle. Weird thing is, when I put it on low graphic it keeps running, even though my PC can definitely handle the high graphics easily. does anyone have any idea what this might be?

see channel page FAQ. lag due to number of men is solely due to CPU bottlenecking. if you havent overclocked, your ivy bridge i5 will perform worse than my hyperclocked sandy bridge i5.
The i5 im running is OC'd to 4.2 atm so still not sure whats up? right now I'm playing ACW 3.5 beta for Empire Total War and the GPU temps is up around 76-80 as far as I can tell
im curious, im new to this game and I noticed that you have your riflemen position on a hill and they all fire down onto the ashigaru but if they were on level ground would the riflemen have shot each other or still hit the ashigaru?
i agree. but in this case, the dumbness was exceeded by the DLC that i otherwise would have missed, and this is total war, not aliens: colonial marines.
the number of cores is pretty much irrelevant. you could have 16 cores at 3.3ghz and shogun 2 would still only use one of them properly. its a big problem that has always plagued total war and we still hope they will fix. multi-thread support. right now, to get the best CPU performance, you essentially need the best single-thread performance you can find, which normally means buying an i5-2500k or an i5-3570k and ramping it up to 5ghz.
This was a great battle but you should have had some cavalry on the flanks for hammer and anvil or chasing them down after the battle ;D I know they're yari untis but a charge from the rear is still pretty effective
I think its definitely something to do with the games. I ran ACW for Empire last night with barely 3,000 men total on the field and was at around 78-80 temps and then played shogun darth mod's with 2 40v40 armies with unit total of 25,000+ and before comebat zoomed in across the field at both armies temsp were only at a solid 55-58 and when entering combat (with all troops in melee) temps were only reaching high 60's so it has definitely gotta be the games and not my PC
I managed to recreate this fight on my computer, although my computer was alot more slower than this though, despite having a rather good computer with quad core CPU. Anyways. I used the same army composition vs 3 Ikko Ikki, except: Each Ikko Ikki army had 1 General. 19 Ashigaru units, 10 Loan Sword Ashigaru units and 10 Bow Ashigaru units. Still won, but had bigger casualities than you had.. Still not too huge of a loss as I got decisive victory. Not sure if I did save the replay though..

Technically your not using your marines to their full extent in this battle. You should elongate their lines to be only 2 marines thick. That will allow every single marine to participate in each volley. Otherwise, you initially waste half or more of your marines before lines clash. Just food for thought.
