1972 Honda SL350 K2 episode 7: final assembly, drive

  • This is the final episode in the Honda SL350 k2 series. I’m this episode, we put the last finishing touches on the bike including: tail light, air filters, tool box/tube, and exhaust. Also, the first start up w the brand new exhaust! And the first ride. This bike project was started in 11/2021 and finished on 10/2022. All Lyles Garage videos are recorded and edited on my iPhone. All music I use in this series “1972 Honda SL350”, is from the “splice” app that I use to edit the videos, or songs I’ve created. The ending song is a cover I did of the Beatles song “and I love her”.

    Outstanding Sir, I live in Australia and am now 67 years old and in 1973 I bought a Honda SL175 ( my first real bike ), I think I've only ever seen one SL350 in the flesh . My Honda SL175 was the same colour as your SL350, ( poppy yellow, I think from memory? ) thank you for posting your video

    an impressive job and a great reference for those of us who restore this bike and don't have much experience, thanks for showing it. I would appreciate it if you could show the link where you got the sponge for the air filters and the little LEDs for the clocks.

    A amazing build mate. I learnt a lot. I now have my own SL 350. I don’t have a service manual, any idea where I can pickup that book you were referencing all the time. For yr bike to start first kick after a full making is a testament of yr true talent. Cheers from Australia

    I bought one brand new exactly like this in 72 for between $800 and $900. Wish I still had it. Do you sell them when you are done or keep them? My side case also got a hole in it from the brake pedal when it fell over, I also patched it with JB Weld.

    Lyle! It's Kyle! Such an inspiration. I just made a deal on this same bike, in about the same condition. Going to go back and ask a few questions now that I've seen everything.
    Where did you source the exhaust? All I see is super pricey ones, you must have "Bit the bullet". ✌✌

      I purchased the exhaust from cmsnl.com and yes, it was pricey. But only half of what I paid for my cb550 exhaust🙄😁

    I bought one of those bikes new in 1973, it was identical to your restoration. They had more low end torque than the CB or CL street models
    . I could slowly walk it up any dirt/gravel incline with both feet on the foot-pegs, at or just above idle as long as it could get traction.

    Where did you get the air filter foam sleeves? I cannot not find them.

      Got them on eBay. Every now and then a set will appear. You can make your own w air filter foam n glue

    I was filled with emotion when I saw your video. My father had one identical to it when I was a kid. My most fond childhood memories are of us riding that bike. I’ve been looking for one for years with no luck. If you ever want to sell it I’d love to have it.

    How do i tune the carbs. I see there are two adjustments but the book does discribes how to sync them. Thank you

      Kind of tough to explain in a comment. But the pilot screw gets set all the way in till it bottoms out, then back it out 1.25 turns. W carbs off bike is easier to synch. Turn out idle knob all the way to drop slides all the way down. Turn idle knob in til it just starts to lift slide. Then, turn each idle screw one full turn. Those idle screws have to be exactly the same to keep carbs synched. Also, I think the needle was on the middle notch. Adjuster on top of carbs needs to be the same, and throttle cable should have a few millimeters of play. Hope that helps a little

      I am confused by this: Turn idle knob in til it just starts to lift slide.

      Also, make sure when you turn the throttle, that both slides move at the the exact same time, and same amount. The brass adjuster at the top of each carb is where you can make adjustments

      @@sher1man88 sorry, I miss spoke. I was at a basketball game trying to reply.
      Turn the idle screw all the way out till the slide is at the bottom. Then turn it in till it just starts moving. Once it’s starts to move slide, then turn idle screw in one full rotation. Do the exact same on other side. That should get you in the ball park. When you start the bike, if it needs more or less idle, make sure you turn each carbs idle screw exactly the same amount.

    My dad died a couple years ago and I have my dad's sl350 with me. . How much total time did it take and did you send stuff out for chrome or did you polish the side covers and stuff up.

      Sounds like he left you a wonderful treasure👍🏻. I spent a few hours a day on it for 11 months from start to finish including the filming for the channel. I did it all out of my garage w tons of elbow grease. The polishing and engine work is on episode 5+6, check ‘em out. I hope it helps w your build👍🏻

      @@lylesgarage I really appreciate the reply. i was hoping to not tear into the engine. but those cam chain wheels made me double think. i dont want unreliable and the bikes got 7300 miles and my dad was riding it in the 70s or 80s. And he had put a two into one header on it. Then California banned the header with no spark arrestor on it. So he parked it with nothing wrong. and gummed up the carbs. and he wouldn't let me get it running. He put the carbs in a bucket of carb cleaner but decided to not buy the exhaust. Those exhaust in 96 were about $800 , now theyre all over like $1000 to $3000, so im keeping the two into one. i got the carbs cleaned up and got the hell out of california. And i wanted to put the carbs on and a battery on to see if it will even run because its not disassembled at all. Or Do you think i should rip into the engine because of age.

      @@dieseltu1035 you’re spot on w the cam wheel. The cam tensioner system is probably the only reason why the bike needs the motor opened. That rubber coating doesn’t last and they’re just asking for trouble. Not the toughest job, but takes patience and time. Fortunately all the parts are still readily available. I purchased the exhaust for $700 ish. from cmsnl.com. It came from Netherlands. I’m not sure if you have a k2 like mine? If you do, I’d recommend them. Either way, use that same web site for all parts diagrams (fiche) and to get parts or just the parts numbers and then shop around. Also, Facebook has an sl350 group, best guys on the internet. Literally hundreds of great men with tons of knowledge who can answer every question. Or you can always ask me here👍🏻 Good Luck💪
