The Most Intense Jeep Toolbox EVER!!

  • Lets make a toolbox for the Scorpion Crawler! I used aluminum for the main body of the toolbox and a foam insert with cutouts to hold the tools in place and organized. It took me two days of intensity to cutout the foam to fit all the tools. It felt like I was playing The Most Intense Game of Tetris EVER!! But with some patience I made them all fit. (Just tools, not spare parts or supplies).
    The foam is called Kaizen foam, I used 2.25" or 57MM thick foam with black on the edges and white in the middle. It is built in layers so you only have to cut the depth and peel it out. Pretty cool stuff. You can get it here: amzn.to/2nF8yg0
    The pen I used was super helpful to make precise patterns, you can find it here: amzn.to/2mZPHz5
    For anything small and round you can just melt the shape in!

    Matt. Great toolbox/trunk. The best solution I found for opening the heavy box is using a pair of $17 Jeep Liberty hood struts. Make your own ball joints with ball bearings welded to bolts. The struts produce static pressure to your latch, this keeps the hood from rattling.

    I like the idea of wrangler door latch system for the trunk lid (smooth).... with struts on the lid to hold it up... then wrangler hood latches to hold the tool box down, with heavier struts under the box to hold it up.... then the only labor involved in operating the system is just to push it back down.... ... also though.... Ruffstuff has some pretty clean and easy to use latches....... but that's just what the world needed.... another opinion.... thanks.... ... and music was spot on... as usual ...... :)

    I would say use a key latch or like a turn latch that controls two pin on each side to keep it closed, make everything with in a few thousands of an inch or so, just so it doesn't rattle or wiggle out. And you can make it on the bent part in the back of it so it won't be too noticeable and it will still match it. The idea is almost similar to a bunker door how they close but you can use an old key lock for a car door or make a similar center thing that's just like a handle or something to twist. Everything's looking good and I don't know if I explained that too too well sorry if I didn't.

    Now all you need is a few hydraulic trunk assists. For the latch, you could try a magnetic push latch, like for cabinets, or the runner hood latches jeeps use. I think the Jeep latches would suit better, they're stronger and probably alot quieter!

    My first thought was racing hood pins... I don't know how far I'd trust a magnet in a bad rollover. I do see them helping in basic operation. Looks like you could have a little cargo rack on top of the trunk lid if needed. Strong work man. Mine are just ratcheted down in the bed

    for a latch, you might be able to find some used or inexpensive tool boxes. drill out the latch system from those and re-rivet them onto the scorpion. could also fabricate a prop for some light-duty liftgate struts to hold up the lid and/or tool box when you open them. that would make for some cool videos.

    I think you should find a latch, but also find a thin rubber gasket like you use on car doors or hoods to protect the edges to go around your toolbox to better protect from water intrusion when the hood is latched down. A latch with a lock would be nice if you trailer it somewhere and need to leave it out while you're out of sight of the trailer. I wonder if they make combination lock latches...

      That was my first thought, I'm pretty sure your average hardware store has u-channel seals that would work perfectly around the entire rim of that box. If not I know you can order it pretty easily. It used to be a really popular thing for PC modding to hide where you would cut a hole for a fan or window. It'll raise the height of the box and bow the lid by a millimeter or two but he could grind that off the stop he made to fix that.

  • @nate5102

    Hood pins for both the tool box and the lid. Drill the holes a little lower for a nice big pin so that you apply some pressure to the lid and then put the pin in so that the lid is pre loaded and won't rattle

  • @ponch19821
    @ponch19821 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    could use a universal hood latch system that you see used on alot of race cars/hot rods. would also recommend using some rubber hose on the ends of that straight bar so not hearing it rattle going down the road/trail. could also set up a gas strut of some sort to hold open the lid and tool box when you want to get under it. might also want to set up a tray or rubber covered plywood to go over your fuel cell to protect it when using that space as storage so you don't damage your fuel pump

  • @StuckBuckinaTruck
    @StuckBuckinaTruck 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hood pins or wrangler hood latches Tj/jk. Also next time your at pull-a-part grab some struts from a hood or rear hatch to hold the lid up. They would probly also help take a little weight off the toolbox if you put some struts down there to. Also maybe find some sort of rubber hose to slide over the end of your tool box holder upper bars to keep it from rattleing terrible. Looks awesome, nice work Matt!

  • @MrGunPilot
    @MrGunPilot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How about some universal assist springs or rams to help lift it (due to the "heavy" you mentioned near the end), but also to support the box in the up position. Good Job.

  • @natekelly4667
    @natekelly4667 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think you should latch the box to the lid with one of those latches that twist and pull down tight then you could easily raise both or undo it to separate. Then like the others said jeep hood latches would look nice.

    Get a trunk latch from the wreckers. Mount the U-shaped bit to the lid, the other part to the truck. If you get one with a motor or solenoid in it for remote operation you could rig up a button that only works if the ignition's on (if you're worried about theft).

  • @drubradley8821
    @drubradley8821 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    is there drainage in the pan of it... for either condensation or splashed water from the tires? What about chopping up a ratchet strap so you can snug it down, to prevent rattles of the lid, even though the cantilevered lid/hinge system puts tension on the lid.... another thought, maybe some kind of matting to stick the under side of the lid to dampen the tools from knocking against the lid?... maybe a noise dampening stick on material, like Dynamat?

    I would suggest using the heavy duty rubber bungee straps. use the shorter ones and take out the hook on one end to attach to the lid then weld a washer to an area inside the roll cage down low to hold it down and if you wanted to you could also weld a washer up high to the cage to be able to hold the trunk lid up then use the 2 removed hooks from the bungee to hook the tool tray to the bottom of the trunk lid while it's up to access the storage area

    Do you have an old toolbox with a key lock mechanism that you could pilfer? You know the kind with the rods that slide out to the sides when you turn the key in the middle? It would also allow you to secure your junk when you're on the trail. Also you might want some kind of weather stripping to keep it from rattling. And maybe rubber caps on the end of those rods you welded on.

    It's been said a couple of times already but attach the front of tool tray to underside of truck lid. That way you are guaranteed a tight life for tool tray.

    use a TJ model door latch the door latch on the aluminum and the Striker plate on that tubing the striker plate are adjustable and you can control the tightness of how the door latches
