    Great tool bag! One thing you might get is spare belts and radiator hoses and heater hose. You never have problems with those until the miles roll up but, if you do need one, you are dead in your tracks if you do not have a spare.

    Spill kit, can get one free at most places. Helps keep our trails open.

  • @mariodesmo

    When out on the trail I will also carry some spare fluids such as ATF, a can of spare-tire-in-a-can (the stuff really works for nails in tires), motor oil, and a can of starting fluid. I also changed over from a metal tool box, to a synthetic material bag system some years ago. I also imagined the metal box slamming into someone's head and well, that's a scary thought!

    • @TrailRecon
      @TrailRecon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about mentioning fluids, but decided to safe that for a spare parts epidote.... some basic fluids are important.

    Looks like my old tool set up. Now all i carry is two screw drivers, a hammer, a 3/8 racket, with 10mm,12mm,14mm and 17mm. Combo wrenches in same sizes. And a 1/2 rachet with axle socket. And a hammer. Less is more. Ive never even needed these tools on a camping trip or trail and my tacoma is a 2012. My 94 land cruiser has a few more tools buts basically the same. I totally understand why you jeep guys carry so many tools though lol.

  • @SCWanderer

    Brad, something I do once or twice- when I have a somewhat easy task/mod to do on the Jeep, I pull out the tool bag and use those tools. If I need a tool from my garage box, I probably need to add it to the trail bag.

    Brad, great setup there. I went with the Atlas Tool roll and it has been awesome. Really heavy duty and similar with all the pouches. It’s amazing what you can get in it. I also have the Atlas trunk bag and that hooks into the floor. No getting hit in the back of the head with tools!

    Stubby wrenches have been a huge help for me on more than one occasion. Maybe 5 or 6 sizes, they don't take up a lot of room. Also there are a few sizes of torx fasteners on every Jeep

    • @ScorpionRegent
      @ScorpionRegent 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Best to know what bolts will need a stubby wrench and only bring those sizes, likewise for torx drivers, no point in hauling more than you need.

    Great video, I think I have most of the same stuff in my tool bag. I’m going to look into your tool company and bag for organization. From my off road racing background I’ve always carried Harbor Freight tools in my bag. On more than one occasion, I’ve left tools on the side of a trail when doing repairs in a hurry. Now that I’ve slowed down maybe I can upgrade. Looked for you at TDS, apparently you left before I got to the venue Saturday. Hopefully we will meet sometime. Great work on all your videos.

    • @tims728
      @tims728 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not quite true. Charles Moncky was born after the term Monkey was used initially. It's more a loose reference to a modified use, has a nautical base or so I've researched. Used to get confused with pipe wrenches that have a vise type grip. Not to offend anyone just a viewpoint. I teach machinery maintenance and and always getting asked why is xxxx called that. A/F for example is in reference to the distance 'accross face' of a bolt or nut. Students always ask the honest questions we seem to take for granted. Cheers!

I only have a budget for one or the other up grade which one is better to start: bigger tires (295/70-17) or rear locker. my terrain is mostly trails either dusty or muddy or snow/ice (remember I can only do one) also it's my daily driver but only on gravel roads to work?

    As someone who turns wrenches almost daily I will say this...
    Organisation of tools will speed up most jobs 4x And prevent a lot of bloody knuckles by enabling you to have the right tool for the job on demand. Having the right tool that is hard to find... means you likely won't take the time to look for it.

    Great video, I carry most of the same gear you have, except I do not carry both 3/8" and 1/2". I only carry the 1/2" set. Save's space and weight and I haven't found a nut yet that can't be turned by a 1/2" ratchet and socket, or a box/open end wrench. And I stopped carrying SAE tools. I"m happy to help anyone who needs it, but I'm not carrying their tools for them too. :) Besides, several can often be interchangeable.
    I also carry a milk crate with a couple of Milwaukee battery power tools, battery flood light, engine and gear oil, trans/power steering, brake fluid, extra 'long' brake lines, duct tape, roll of paper shop towels, toilet paper in a zip-lock bag, and a solar panel charging system for whatever.

    No MRE? emergency food if you are stuck for hours. Brake cleaner, a million uses for that stuff. 550 cord, also 1001 uses( i replaced a belt on a humvee with the stuff and made it 4 miles. )

    Medic bag much?? LOL. Love the form factor of the tool bag, and if you are already familiar with it.....this is a PERFECT solution.

    Solymon Merrick of Springfield, Massachusetts, patented the first wrench in 1835. Charles Moncky, a Baltimore mechanic, invented the monkey wrench around 1858. Moncky's wrench was named using a purposeful misspelling of his name.

    I have the exact same tekton socket set. It’s a great set. If you’re gonna carry a bottle jack, you might want to cut a piece of 2x6 that fits in the ammo box. You can use that as a bigger footprint for the bottle jack.

    I used to drag race a 1969 Camaro in HS. Threw a belt one night, 20 miles from home. Had to get flat towed home with my buddy's Blazer, what a nightmare. Machines break down, it's idiotic to get stranded just because you didn't pack basic tools/parts to limp home.

    Thanks! This was helpful. With all the stuff you have I was surprised that you don't carry an impact wrench for tire changes. I've got a bad back and hauling on a lug wrench is no fun. Sometimes I even carry my torque wrench....

    Awesome tool/equipment review. Some suggestions- a pry bar, zip-ties (various sizes/lengths), zip-lock bags (again various sizes), garbage & trash bags, and a spill kit/absorbent pads. While preparing for EJS I kept reading about responsible trail use, but never really saw any reference to a spill kit in anyone's equipment load out. So I purchased a kit on Amazon to take along. I've seen fuel lines break on local obstacle courses, so I know it could be an issue on the Moab trails. I would also be shamed if I had a leak or was near someone on the trail that experienced a leak and I couldn't do anything to help clean it up. I am the Captain of our County HazMat Team and teach emergency response here in PA, so this is a subject near and dear to my heart. Safe Travels and God Bless. See you in Moab!

    Hey Brad - will you remind me which trip/video was the one where you all used the Colby valve? I've been scanning through your channel but can't seem to find it. (I think it was a trip with Marco?)

    Zip Ties, WD40, spare adapter if you have security type lug nuts. My buddy once didn’t pack his and we had to change a flat on the trail. Luckily we got one off with vice grips, but it wasn’t pretty.

    No telescoping magnets? Insanely useful for dropped parts, holding fasteners in place in tight areas, or pulling items out of axle housings/tubes... Good set of jumper cables? The lithium jump packs are nice but cables are dead simple and reliable.

    I don’t believe you talked about Lights!
    Flash lights, magLights, head lamp and portable flood lights for doing repairs in the dark of night.
    And lastly a high power pen light on a extended rod. For under the dash. Small enough to be able to get into small spaces.
    Hope this was helpful.

    Your roll over point is kind of mute.... You fill that bag with tools the extra 20lbs of weight from an actual box won't save your life when it hits your neck. It's more about strapping things down.
