Have you been told that your child or client with autism won’t ever be able to talk? In today’s video, I share some insight on how to get a child with autism to talk. A non-verbal autism child can still develop the necessary oral motor movements, lessen the reliance on non-verbal communication devices, and overcome severe language delay with the proper action steps taken. If you’re planning to start improving vocal language for your child or client, it’s important to understand the process of planning, assessing, and taking data as a starting point. Dr. Mary Barbera "fell" into the autism world in 1999 when her first-born son, Lucas, was diagnosed with autism one day before his third birthday. Over the past 2 decades, Mary has gone from knowing almost nothing about autism to becoming a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst, writing a best-selling book, The Verbal Behavior Approach (which is now translated in over 10 languages), and earning a PhD with a thorough understanding of some of the best autism ABA strategies. In 2015, Mary started her first autism online course which has already been purchased from parents and professionals from over 45 countries and now sells 3 online courses. With over 2 decades in the autism world, both as a parent and professional, Mary is in a unique position to help YOU, especially if you live or work with a child with autism who also has language delays or disorders. Her mission is to turn things around for 2 million children with autism (or signs of autism) by 2020 through online training and advocacy!

Your videos have really helped me and my boyfriend's daughter. She is 4 and autistic. She can talk so I don't like to say non verbal. But she won't talk unless prompted. She can read, add, and subtract and write words. But she struggles with fine motor skills and has behavior issues. I have been working with her for the past year and have potty trained her and I am the one who got her talking. But her mother puts her in diapers and makes her drink from a bottle. She will not stop, even when ask😣 some weeks she does well, but some weeks she regresses a lot. It is very discouraging at times. My goal for her is to lose the autism diagnosis. Sometimes it seems so close, just to have ripped away in a week😢. She is not even my child, but I want her to have the best life she can, and sometimes I think it will never happen like this. She has so much potential, for it to be waisted. I am looking for any way to help this child❤

That sounds like a challenging situation! I do have online courses that may help. You can check out a workshop here www.marybarbera.com/workshops . You are on the right track thinking about adaptive skills like toileting. You can check out www.marybarbera.com/potty for more info on that.

My biggest issue with my daughter (8) is that she will say some word approximations but they’re so low in volume or just so unclear that they sound like random sounds. It’s so hard to miss day to day while you’re busy doing other things.

I totally understand. It is good that she has some approximations. My new book Turn Autism Around has a lot of strategies to help build on those approximations. Check out turnautismaround.com to learn more. It is for kids who have developmental language of under 5.

My child is 7 yrs nonverbal on ABA from past 1 yr..since this lockdown ..many sounds from her mands ..all first letters of word..ss for spin..th for tickles..mm for music
I suspect apraxia as i clearly see the struggle to produce the sound to get the reinforcement... she uses cued articulation to produce sounds.. but not able to blend the sounds..
    Any suggestions

With all due respect, practice drinking from a straw is not going to improve someone's articulation. The recruitment of motor neurons and pathways for drinking is completely different from what happens during speech. To get better at speech, you have to practice speech.

You certainly have to practice speech! Straw drinking is certainly good for those motor muscles in addition to that.
