Private Investigations from DIRE STRAITS Live " On The Night" 1992 will blow your mind. Mark plays Spanish style on the acoustic and is an incredibly haunting song with Mark not singing but narrating which makes it even more haunting. Cheers all the best from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸

Thanks for this review, it is a wonderful song. I prefer the performance of this song live at Wembley 1985. Much better!

Check out the alchemy edition of many great performances. So lucky i grew out of my teenage years listening to this and havent stopped yet. Real musicians that can actually play without all the effects.

You should check out "Private Investigations", either from this or the Alchemy concert. There Mark is using an actual Spanish guitar. And he does things with it that amaze me every time I listen to him.

Mark has never played with a pick. This version in Sydney shows a closeup view of his fingers on the fretboard.
He tells stories in his lyrics. This is about life on a fairground. He talks about the rides Waltzers, Coroner's. Cakewalks Carnival Arcades. Based on his experiences at Spanish City in Whitley Bay in the North East of England where he went often when growing up.
The support guitarist on this Tour American Jack Soni is worth a mention. Jack was a guitarist and technician working at Rudi's Guitars in New York. Jack replaced Hal Lindes in 85. Jack always played barefoot on stage.
Sadly he died last year aged 66.

As you're a classical guitarist I recommend checking out Mark Knopfler's Altimira, from the soundtrack he composed and performed with renowned percussionist Evelyn Glennie for the film of the same name that starred Antonio Banderas.

Марк Нопфлєр - один з найулюбленіших гітаристів.
Його втступи - завжди гарне шоу з імпровізаціями та залученням глядачів до дії. Дякую, що не забуваєте про них.

A wonderful outro, Mark Knopfler throwing in dozens of beautiful melodic ides. The tye if layered crescendo your talking about happens frequently in the music of Mike Oldfield, however, you didn't hear any of that from the video of Mike's you watched, please try something else from Mike.

I'm way too used to the studio version so this version seemed fast and off to me, but the guitar solo was great to watch. If you get a chance sometime to listen to the studio version I'm sure you'll enjoy it. :)

And you will have to look really hard to find a clean Strat played better than Mark Knopfler, such a beautiful touch.

I consider this a better version. It has no introduce the band section in the middle that just doesn't fit and the end solo is better. The solo has nicer phrases and doesn't sound like it's wandering aimlessly. Wembley does. The solo here tells a story cohesively.

@@dopiaza2006 They all are good but the version he reacted to is the best one to me. This one has such a lovely end solo and the Alchemy version's guitar is a little thinner. More percussive. That Thank You Australasia concert is on TH-cam. It's near 2 hours long and has so many old and new (to then) songs. It has Ride Across the River and a great version of So Far Away

Glad you’re doing Knopfler and Dire Straits, but this is a strange and not very good rendition…tempo way too fast , almost pop-y. When you circle back next to Dire Straits (which you must), I beg of you to look at the Alchemy tour videos, Telegraph Road probably being the epitome - Knopfler but also the whole band.

    • @musashimiyamoto586

What do yo mean "not good". With DS even "strange" is equivalent to masterful.

Good point - I mean for the first 2/3rd of the video (which I hadn’t seen before) I was thinking “what are they doing?”…but it is still very good, just not my favorite rendition.

Honestly I would recommend the studio versions in almost every case. I find it hard to listen to Alchemy today (yes as a teen in the 80's/90's I did appreciate the increased energy and dynamics, but getting opportunities to hear live version of songs was scarce). Now II just find that the songs are ruined by Mark Knopfler's singing, which is incredibly flat and most of the melody gets lost. If you're just after the guitar then it's still nice to hear endless variations of familiar guitar solos,, but in terms of enjoying a song, it's tough. Basically Mark Knopfler gets a pass because he's a genius, but let's face it, he ruins his amazing songs by not being bothered to sing them.

    • @kentl7228
      @kentl7228 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

This is the best version. The solo at the end is sublime.
It was the last night of twenty at that venue in Sydney at the end of the huge Brothers in Arms tour. The mixing may need some loving, but this is surely their best concert on film.
I cannot understand the reference about the tempo being fast and "pop". In the lyrics, it is set in a theme park, so a brisk tempo is appropriate. I never thought that musical styles belong to certain tempos...

@@WoodyGamesUK I know we all have our opinions which are subjective, but that, with all due respect, is probably the daftest comment I ever heard about Dire Straits. Mark's voice and the music are as perfect a match in music history like Meat Loaf was with Jim Steinman. Too bad you don't see it that way, but if Mark's voice ruins the songs for you, fine, then leave DS for us to enjoy and please don't linger.
