Take a look at I was only 19 about the singer’s brother in law suffering from PTSD from Vietnam.
The most important line in that song is always overlooked yet it's meaning is enormous. This song is for all soldiers, from all cultures and religions, "we're fools to make war with our "brothers in arms" it's not OUR fight we're fighting..😔
Finest anti-war song ever written.
I love it, but there's a lot more out there that would be right up there.
Eric Bogle - And the band played Waltzing Matilda
Redgum - I was only 19
Don McLean - The grave
Lou Reed - Xmas in February
Billy Joel - Goodnight Saigon
Edwin Starr - War...to name a few.
@@digimontexcelguy1114 You forgot:
Cranberries - Zombie
CSN&Y - Ohio
Kate Bush - Army Dreamers
......all great and important songs, but 'Brother's In Arms' is different, very different.
@@rk41gator Didn't forget any of them. Zombie I didn't include on purpose for reasons I won't go into, and the others because I was not aware of them.
The others are good, specifically Ohio. This is written from the viewpoint of a dying soldier. It makes it more meaningful to those who served.
@@carlfinley5373 Yes. I can imagine. Not having served I can not feel the same emotion, but it makes the message the most powerful, haunting, and tragic.
Have a listen to Dire straits Sultans of swing alchemy live - it's one of the greatest live performances of all time. Recorded in 1983 at London Hammersmith Odeon
Yes do that if you want to hear a guitar virtuoso 💯
My Dad's favourite group...RIP Dad 😢x
Same here. Played this at his funeral.
Yes did the same also last June, I always well up now if I hear this song@@eyeq7730
Your dad chose well, sir.
The perfect example of when less is more.
The ultime masterpiece of Mark. Gorgeous and restrain guitar work and solo on here, unique sound, profond lyrics and wonderful melody. Love it, can't get enough of listening to this gem, I would like to have a complete song without that f… fade out.
Mark Knopfler's guitar playing is superb.
When talking about great guitarists, one cannot fail to mention Mark Knopfler. Very few can touch guitar strings like him. And speaking of Knopfler, cascading down, one can only get to Dire Straits and, consequently, Sultans Of Swing (don't let the title trick you, it's ROCK).
The Sultans Of Swing I propose you, in fact, is the amazing live version extracted from the 1984 live Alchemy. (238 millions wiew)
Extended in minute length precisely to allow Knopfler to do what he most preferred: play joyfully with the guitar.
This version is much more intense than the one on record because of the presence of the keyboards, the exuberance of Williams on drums but, above all, Knopfler's histrionics in expanding the beautiful final solo.
The frontman masterfully embroiders the original piece and takes it to the next level.
Priceless!

Love
Teresa - ITALY
I always preferred Romeo & Juliet, I love that song
This is actually shortened version, it always feels unfinished to me, the album version has an extra two minutes on the end of it. And of course there are numerous live versions on TH-cam which are considerably longer.
Am I right remembering the part where you can here a bombardement, is missing in this cut version?
They need to react to the entire outro, it might be the best part of the song
As a guitarplayer myself I so welcome Mark´s approach to playing - indeed for the song first and foremost! His feel and tone is out of this world! So to all of you out there that needs to play as fast as possible, buy a Play Station! ;-) Thank you Jone for this one! It reminds me what is important - and what is not.
All you'll ever need in life is Mark knopfler on the 58 👌🏼
The live version of Brothers in arms "On the night" is super!
"Brothers in arms" or one of the greatest guitar solos we will never hear (damn fade out!).
I'm sorry I wasn't notified of your reaction, though I caught the end of it. A very beautiful and heartfelt song - it always brings tears to my eyes. The stupidity of mankind.
MK is naturally left handed but plays right. At a young age his sister told him nobody plays left handed so he just learnt to play right handed and finger pick too. Amazing.
Maybe that's why he gets all the notes right and more than that, all the different tones to them - better hand on the fret.
Live version, ON THE NIGHT : Mark took to the next level... As my father used to say, his guitar was crying along with him...
I would like to know more specificly where you felt the music was a bit off and then resolved? Always a good listen. Mark has the touch that few others exhibit.
I see that you play classic guitar, you should react to Private Investigation from Dire Straits, he plays a beautiful classical Ramirez
The Wembley Dec '85 live version of Private Investigations is their best - at least it is for me! It is of course subjective. :)
@@ratsters7 Agrée, for me, the best guitar solos are from the 85 tour but the best arrangements are from the On The Night tour.
For Dire Straits, if at all possible watch a live performance, as Mark lets himself loose live and improvises his solos making them much better than on the studio recording.
Yes, 9 out of 10 songs sound better live with these dudes, they're just phenomenal, having so much fun on stage!
You need to watch a live performance of this tbh, any good guitarist can turn out a cracking tune with several takes and retakes, but in a live performance a bum note can’t be hidden and there is also never a. Um note in earshot with Knopfler
-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
Best tv scene I have seen. 'I helped build the wall. He was my partner, get it!?' 'yea..'
"we're fools to make war on our bothers in Arms"
Good reaction it is my favourite song. This music video version is cut and I would definitely recomended to check out long, studio version. That hammond organ at the end !
Great reaction. Knopfler plays well and serves the song, writes great lyrics and plays awesomely. I'd love to see you react to Alan Holdsworth looking glass. People say that Steve Vai is not from Earth well Holdsworth is from another galaxy. All i can do is laugh when i hear him play. Just unique sounds. He's got a very sophisticated palette to draw from.
Being a classical guitarist, you must listen to some Genesis, particularly from the '70s. They were a progressive rock band with classical and folk roots (and a HUGE following, similar to Yes and Pink Floyd). You might start out with 'Firth of Fifth' (1973) from the album Selling England by the Pound. I look forward to your reaction.
I'm curious to know more about your comment that there's a point where the notes don't seem to quite fit with the chords, but the overall vibe still works. Mark Knopfler is one of the highest rated guitarists in rock or other genres. He's known for his clean, highly melodic and creative finger picking style which very few rock guitarists use. I care most to hear your take on his style of guitar playing. The version of the song you're listening to is a shortened version, cutting quite a lot of guitar solo in the outro portion of the song.
This music expresses the tragedy that is man. The need to kill one another instead of living in peace. This is about thanking, saluting, all soldiers no matter which side you are on. I would like to see war end because it is insane. This is sort of an anti-war song and a very emotional one. Brilliant piece of art. Thank you to Mark & Dire Straits for all the music you gave us. Music should be a religion. xoxo
in my top 10 moments of music history this 2:09 to this 2:30
Mark Knopfler is an original guitarist..
Just play a few notes and you'll know it's Mark... Please listen to the concert recording. See the difference... watch your fingers...
Héllo de France Bonjour il faut regarder le live de 1993 super 😊😊😊
As a classical guitarist, you may well enjoy Greg Lake's acoustic playing in the track 'in the beginning ' by ELP (Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Nice song and reaction
Good reaction, sending love to you my brother.
Wisdom is like the wind... moderation is hoped for...
You should listen to south african guitarist Trevor Nasser
Thanks for your reaction,I've got brothers in arms on vinyl,so many great songs on there.check out Alex Vargas, till forever runs out ,mahogany sessions.cheers simon
Good if we can see live version so you can talk more about technical aspect
If you like this, then dure straights. Sultans of swing. Live alchemy tour 1986
Listen to the Nelson Mandela concert from 1988 live. Brothers in Arms
I think Mark Knopfler has an Every Man voice.
Try sultans of swing by Dire Straits 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
I thought you would talk more about the guitar and the arpeggios and how a major key sounds so sad, with the 4ths and the 6ths. Classical guitarist.......
Not a song u can capture in a studio. Find live recordings. With the london royal philharmonic in royal albert has me holding my breath through tho solo every time
He plays much faster in Sultans Of Swing.
Chet Atkins called Mark Knopfler the best flat picker in the world, this was a t time when Chet Atkins was considered the best flat picker in the world. Truly, i believe he was right, what 'bout you ?
Album version is much better (and longer) but no one ever reacts to it.
If you're a guitarist, and you're the age you look...is this really the first time you heard this, de facto anti-war anthem? Man... you missed out.
I know... it seems there are many artists i have missed for this long...
I am sorry to comment so: If you don't have the Lyrics, then the Music makes no sense either. You make no mention of Classical music, and you don't mention the Knopfler 'style'
I consider this video a waste of time, sorry.
