I'm a bagpipe maker and a sailor. This song is made from everything I'm made from. It's timeless as measured in centuries. You have to know sailors, sailing, the sea, and peoples of the world who sing their stories in musical scales of only 5 notes like "Brandy" to realize how timeless. This song wasn't invented--it was discovered. Best wishes and thanks to author, the band and those who brought it to us.

  • @Tchikanii
    @Tchikanii 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

What fascinates me about Brandy's story is how perfectly it illustrates how sometimes we're attracted to those who are emotionally unavailable. Brandy could probably have any sailor in her town, but she isn't interested in any of them even though they imply that they would leave their jobs and stay in order to be with her. Instead she fell for a man who immediately made clear that he won't settle with her, that he will prioritise his life at sea over his relationship with her. In a town full of options, she goes for the emotionally unavailable man. Why? Unresolved issues, fear of intimacy, self-sabotage, low self-esteem?
I feel low-key called out. Brandy homegirl, we prolly need some therapy.

I was also named after this song but my dad wasn’t a sailor. He didn’t even have a sailor’s tattoo. Although, he is cremated and apparently they dump the ashes in the sea, so I’m pretty sure he’s on the ocean floor or a speck of ash in a fishes eyeball or something down there. So he’s still not a sailor but he’s with the best of ‘em. (I LOVE my dad. He was autistic and loved music so much. That’s why he said he named me after this song in 75.) True story!

    LYRICS:
    [Verse 1]
    There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
    And talk about their homes
    [Verse 2]
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say "Brandy, fetch another round"
She serves them whiskey and wine
    [Chorus 1]
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
    (You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
    (Such a fine girl)
Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
    [Verse 3]
    Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the north of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of a man that Brandy loved
    [Verse 4]
He came on a summer's day
    Bringing gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
    No harbor was his home
    [Chorus 2]
The sailor said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
    (You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
    (Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea"
    [Bridge]
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor's story
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
    She saw its raging glory
But he had always told the truth
Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
    [Verse 5]
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
    [Outro]
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl
    (You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
    (Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
    It is, yes, it is"
    "Brandy, you're a fine girl
    (You're a fine girl)
What a good wife you would be
    (Such a fine girl)
But my life, my love and my lady is the sea
It is, it is, yes, it is"

Loved reading through the comments. So refreshing to see so many like-minded souls appreciating this timeless classic. I think it resonates differently for each of us but, most of us end up at the same place. At 59 years old now, I have, so many times, played out my own video in my mind as I listened to this entrancing song. Just as many others, I could see Brandy serving the whiskey & wine to the lonely sailors. Not only that, I could emagine all the come-ons and advances she must have endured. I could picture the beautiful chain with the locket from her lover. The chorus kicks in and, I can relate to the pain of being in love with someone who is not there. "My" mental picture of Brandy is a slim brunette with a simple beauty that needs no makeup and (of course) the most beautiful eyes that leave you breathless. I can feel what she is feeling, as she walks through her silent town, her heart yearning for her love that is not around. A hugh shout out to all those involved in the creation of a very good video to help us enjoy this classic masterpiece.

You are a romantic! How lovely your vision was. I'm 60 and damn if this song doesn't take me back to the best days.
I always pictured her a blonde but I like the idea of a brunette. I used to tend bar and loved it when someone would play "Brandy" on the jukebox. My name's not Brandy and I didn't serve sailors, but I did served the lonely-the military, the hardworking man, the office worker. They all had a story to tell and just needed someone to listen. I think there's a little Brandy in all of us lady bartenders. Thanks for your cool comment.

I LOVE this!! I always envisioned this song as taking place in the era of tall ships and pirates, likely in Bristol or on the Cornish coast. So romantic.
"One day, in this harbor town, the tavern’s landlord and his wife found a baby girl left on their doorstep, whom they raised as their own. She had beautiful hair the color of the finest brandy, so that’s what they called her."

    There's a port on a western bay
And it serves a hundred ships a day
Lonely sailors pass the time away
    And talk about their homes
And there's a girl in this harbor town
And she works layin' whiskey down
They say, Brandy, fetch another round
She serves them whiskey and wine
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"Yeah, your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea"
    Brandy wears a braided chain
Made of finest silver from the North of Spain
A locket that bears the name
Of the man that Brandy loved
He came on a summer's day
    Bringin' gifts from far away
But he made it clear he couldn't stay
    No harbor was his home
The sailors say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
Yeah, Brandy used to watch his eyes
When he told his sailor stories
She could feel the ocean fall and rise
    She saw its ragin' glory
But he had always told the truth, Lord, he was an honest man
And Brandy does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down
Brandy walks through a silent town
And loves a man who's not around
She still can hear him say
She hears him say, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"
    It is, yes it is
He said, "Brandy, you're a fine girl" (you're a fine girl)
"What a good wife you would be" (such a fine girl)
"But my life, my lover, my lady is the sea"

As a younger musician, and songwriter this is one of those songs that is just the very peak of the summit, of the highest mountain. As a Rhythm guy (born bass player) the groove in this song is just so incredibly powerful. The low end of these guys knit a perfect pocket. I can’t even imagine attempting to keep that tempo, with that many notes in perfect time on tape. You only get one shot, and god damn I’m surprised that recording console didn’t catch fire.

I have worked on cruise ships for 24 years and have worked my way up to Hotel General Manager. In our port stops crew sometimes meet local girls and of course we have to disembark that day. Although we do the same run for a few months usually so we stop at the same ports.
Met a few over the years but met a Venezuelan crew member, and that was that. A woman is like the sea. Fabulous on a calm summer day or hell in a raging storm. Never underestimate the call of the sea.
