    Stressing light pressure is great advice. A lot of shaving issues are caused by heavy handedness which lead to skin inflammation which leads to razor burn and bumps. Thanks for posting! Great job!

    Thank you for this video, watched it yesterday and shaved today (before I’d dry shaved with a cartridge razor and I’d used an electric one) for the first time with a safety razor and it went well. I’m excited to get better and find what works best for me, you’re the first step on this road that’ll probably last me the rest of my life. Thank you

    Nice vid!
    Cartridge razors always felt like they did a fine job leaving me with smooth skin, but stubble always came back halfway through the day.
    Even though they seemed like a pain, I did my second safety razor shave today (my first suffered from clumsiness) and even late at night the face still feels almost baby smooth. Just shows how much closer it shaves without realizing it.
    Your tips of “plenty of soap” and “lightest touch possible” are spot on. Saves you from burn and blood.
    I’ll probably never go back to those overpriced gimmicky chunks of plastic again.

    Great video!! In order to not buy those expensive cartridges I was using a shavette that was given to me as a gift. Good close shave but it took a long time to shave and left my face irritated, but the cost savings were worth it since the DE blades are so cheap. In my country not many people DE shave because safety razor are not sold here, but watching your videos made me really want to try safety razors. This morning I ran into a very cheap China made Hang chao de razor, it cost me about $2.00 equivalent. At first I thought it was going to be a awful harsh nicked fill shave, but I am amazed how smooth the shave was and how smooth my face is, even with a China made cheap razor. I am very enthusiastic to have found the sweet spot of the low cost shave of the shavette with the smooth and quicker shave on a safety razor. From now on I am a safety razor shaver for life. Just wish there were better quality razors like the ones I've seen on TH-cam, those most be a beauty. Thank you!

    Just yesterday I put on a brand new cartridge on a Gillette razor and had a terrible shave, and that was the last drop for me. I said screw it - screw all these 5-bladed sci-fi vibrating uber razors with their expensive cartridges and terrible shaves, I'm gonna get a traditional safety razor... And so I did, I just placed the order, after watching a few videos to get an idea. This one was very helpful! Even though we're not the same gender, I believe (I hope) what you said holds true for shaving in general, whether it be mustaches or legs. Here's hoping for good things. Got a razor, a brush, some soap. Thanks for the informative video!

      I picked up a Mühle R89 as well as one of their silvertip brushes (I figured a softer brush would probably work for less dense and lighter hair). And some shaving soap from Crabtree & Evelyn. A masculine kit, but I imagine it'll work just great!

    Great, informative video; thanks. I think that, for most guys, the cheeks have the softest hair, followed by the sides of the neck, then the throat, and lastly under-the-nose and the chin. So shaving in that order would make sense; it gives the soap more time to soften the harder whiskers. YMMV, of course...

    I watched this several months ago when I first started DE shaving. Excellent advice. Found that Proraso White soap (which is Oatmeal and green tea BTW) works best for me. Green is good too, but tried the cream instead of the soap. Discovered that smearing a little soap (1/2 peanut size or so) on my neck then re-watering before I face lather protects my neck (must work like the pre shave which i have yet to try) and results in less irritation there than I used to get.

    • @thecanuckshaver922
      @thecanuckshaver922  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      fantastic. I think you are right in that the soap is likely softening the hair on your neck and adding a bit of protection as well. I don't own the Processor white but have sampled it and I do really enjoy it.
      thanks for watching

    Getting ready to take a shower & do my first de razor with brush & soap shave. It's a Rockwell 2c & a brush from my grandpa (I think it's boar, but really broke in) or a badger (brand spankin' new) with soap my grandpa used (not sure what it is, but it's in a mug & it's solid). I'll report back when I'm done

    • @austinpresley6187
      @austinpresley6187 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok, getting the angle right is the first thing. Getting the lather is another important thing. But your soap, that's pretty important! My grandpa's soap was sticky, & it really clogged the head. Soap is supposed to help it glide, this soap made it stick. Luckily, my dad had bought some shaving soap. I'll try again tomorrow, I guess. Hopefully I'll get the angle down, I couldn't really seem to find it. But hey, it was my first time ever shaving with a DE safety razor.

    • @thecanuckshaver922
      @thecanuckshaver922  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the encouragement, sir. I want to get good at it bc I want to prove to my dad that it's not a big waste of money. I guess as you know, it's a little chunk of change to get started, especially when it's for 3 guys (my dad, brother, and myself) with razors all around, the soap, & brushes. I was going to use my grandpa's brush, but it sheds pretty bad.
      Some people say that they don't like the pricklyness of new brushes, i kinda like it; although, my grandpa's brush was really soft because he'd been using it for ages. It has split ends & triple split ends!

      Sir, my shave this morning was amazing! It is only due to the Lord, because I asked Him to teach & help me to learn to shave. I had only a few nicks, and I'm not bbs, but I did a 3 pass shave lathering in-between & an aftershave from American Providence (firepits & flannel). Although it'll be until about Wednesday before I shave again as I'm only 15¾& don't grow a ton of hair yet. I used the Rockwell on the 3 plate because I could hardly even feel the 1.

    I've found my grandad's Soluna three piece DE razor in gold finish, and some old Platinum blades, and decided to try them out. I've used Gilette mach 3, and various BIC, both expensive and cheap ones, but shaving with a safety razor is by far the best, i had a couple of zits that the safety razor didn't cut, and that would get cut with a cartridge razor. And the most important thing, no irritation whatsoever! I'm definetely switching to safety razors.

    I need to sincerely thank you. I found your video almost a year ago when I was looking for a “how to lather a shaving soap video”. I was board with shaving and decided to buy a mug and a brush to use with my Cartridge razor, I couldn’t make a decent shaving cream. When I found your video I decided to order all of the items you used and suggested, still love my DE89 and Proraso! You explained things to this novice in a way that I didn’t feel alone in having no idea how the process worked and greatly appreciated your advice “don’t press!”. I once hated shaving, now I love it. I have gone on to purchase several DE razors to include modern and vintage razors, a good variety of artisan soaps (and all of the Prorasos), after shaves and even a collection of Straight Razors, honing stones and strop. I now do daily 2 passes with a Straight Razor and one clean up pass with any of my favorite DE razors. I’m so glad I found your video, it has really changed how I enjoy shaving! Will never go back to crap in can shave creams or cartridge razors. Witch Hazel is great stuff, can’t imagine not using it after a close shave- can’t imagine missing a morning of shaving now! I really enjoy the process, the BBS shaves and the smells of the soaps, aftershaves and shave balms. Thank you for doing this video and introducing me to DE and Wet Shaving!

    Man I did everything wrong on my first shave. Weishi razor with Astra blades, proraso soap. Forgiving combo like yours, but I used too much pressure, I took short strokes, I didn't pay attention to the grain, and I made 3 passes. Once my face heals up I'll watch this video again and hopefully ace it. Excellent video.

      The Canuck Shaver ya know, oddly enough I shaved this morning and did great! I have a Norelco 1260x I've had for years so I used that in the burned area after lathering up with some Arko, but then I used my DE where it was good in the other spots...did alright! Went with the grain and it was comfy. Still working on angle but I'll get there. Thanks for the kind words!

      The Canuck Shaver I had one other question, I shaved with the grain today, way better on irritation, my face feels great! But it wasn't the closest at all. I'm curious when I might be able to try across or against the grain. Is there an adjustment period for my face? I've used a Norelco electric for years so DE is quite a bit different.

    Great video brother. I get irritation in the same spot you do. I thought about getting a better shaving cream (using Barbasol) but then I found a much cheaper way to get a smooth shave. I make my own pre shave with two parts castor oil, one part olive oil and one part grape seed oil. I add some lavender essential oil for smell. After I started using that in combination with the Barbasol my irritation died down significantly and I don't even need and aftershave because some of it says on my face. Just a thought hope it helps.

    Just tried my first safety razor shave. :) Not quite as close a shave as I could get with my Gillette, but I attribute that to not getting the razor angle correct. Cartridge razors like Gillette's Mach 3 take that difficulty away. Just need some more practice.

    Stache, Chin, Sides, Neck, in that order, trust me. Here's why: 1 Stache is the easiest place to cut yourself, so have your razor as sharp as possible for precision. Chin is the roughest area, again, the sharper the better. Sides aren't as rough as the neck, but it's better to move to them before heading for the neck to create that "end ridge" for the neck sweeps -- so you'll know where to stop. When in comes to neck, first up, then, when you think you're finished, down. I've been wet-shaving like this since I was 15, and I'm 48. If you really are new to this method of shaving, take it from me.

    The products you mentioned are nice and high quality definitely not cheap ($100 worth of products !) IMHO the perfect way to test the waters is to purchase the “Van der Hagen Premium Shave set” “green box” its really cheap! Like $12.00 here in the states! It comes with a decent boar brush, shave mug and a soap!!! They also offer a DE style razor as well everything you need to “experiment with “wet shaving” for under $30 bucks (Amazon). @thecanuckshaver922  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      for sure. on the chin it is much easier to do short strokes as it does tend to be an area of lots of contours. however with improved technique you may find that longer strokes are just as easy. it ends up being whatever works best for each person.

    • @ObscuredByTime

      Just don't shave "against the grain" on first sweeps, only when you think you can't do better going "with the grain," and then, if you really do have delicate skin, you should probably re-lather for the opposite sweeps. Use very hot water, then shake the razor dry which will also cool it some. Before you know it, you won't need a mirror, even. I wet shave in a hot, steamy shower -- that is absolutely the way to go once you have the confidence.
