    I received a straight razor in 1976 from a friend who made a trip to Germany. I was 17 at the time. He said it would be the only shaving tool I'd ever need. I'd used double edge and injectors up til that point. Didn't have the guts to try it. Two years ago I finally got the guts. Bought all the stones and strops needed to keep it shave sharp. I use it whenever I have time to take time. Otherwise I use a DE. Honestly, it's easier to cut myself with the DE. I rarely cut myself with the straight razor. Shaves are closer too. If I had known I would have manned up years ago.

      I have found that as long as they are sharp, you don't cut yourself much. When I have time (like on weekends) I find the whole ritual very satisfying.

      I find that I cut myself more often with DE razors. I tend to be really focused with a straight razor.

    I learned to straight razor shave when I was 15 as Dad was a trained barber from the old country. Started DE shaving when I started shaving my head as it was challenging for me not being able to see the edge. If learning how to SR shave, you can never collect enough information and practice, practice, practice with patience until it becomes second nature. Use what works for you but don't forget other things that you have learned as they may serve you in the future. "Time and patience are the attributes that will get you proficient, enjoying yourself is the key to success". These are the most impactful words Dad shared with me. If you have a problem with that , electric or cartridge razors are always available to you. Great, to the point video. Enjoyable to watch and a bit of comedy at the end was cool. Keep up the great work!

    An excellent and fun video. I have been straight shaving for a decade now and would never go back to those disposable things and the cans of goo. Current politics aside, a straight razor is not that difficult to use and they provide about a thousand times better shave. I wish I could tell you how much money it has saved me as it certainly could, but I have acquired a small collection of straight razors including a couple customs. Straight shaving is a fantastic connection to history and it is a daily luxury that can save you money if you want it to. Most do indeed learn to switch hands with the razor, but it is far from necessary if you prefer one hand only. Take your time learning and it is safe, enjoyable and provides a better shave.

      Xu I I have to agree with you- I’ve really gotten into wet shaving with the old style safety razors and straight razors (and shave brushes) more for the comfort and hobby aspects than cost or time savings. I’ve spent far more money and I enjoy spending time on my daily shaves than I used to with cartridge razors. The cheapest way to go is the “crap in a can” shave cream and a bag of plastic trac II razors but I could never see myself going back to that!

    • @sniperdoug1969
      @sniperdoug1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Xu I you betcha. My dad always told me when he taught me how to shave. “This is a proud time to be a man. Slow down and enjoy the shave.” I look forward to my evening shaves. It’s just a good relaxing feeling. The feel of the razor gliding across your face. The whole experience takes me back to my youth watching my dad shave. Then he would give me a back of the razor shave. I did this with my boys too. Then I’d put a little old spice or bay rum in his palm. Then I would put some in my palms. We’d both slap that on our face at the same time. Found memories of him saying “Ahhhhh smooth as a baby’s butt.”

  • @sniperdoug1969
    @sniperdoug1969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Funny I have always used my right hand for my whole face. This is the way my dad taught me how to do it. I started to seriously shave around 14. I turn 50 in 3 weeks so I guess I’ve been wrong all these years. Plus it may be cheating but I have used a disposal blade straight razor for about 12? Years now. I still have my old razor and strop. I like the convince of the disposal blade ones more though. I also never have had to go back and shave against the grain. I get baby’s ass smooth shaves without going against the grain. Plus the few times I’ve tried going against the grain. The old spice or bay rum burns like wildfire.

    • @lunahula
      @lunahula 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not everyone can shave against the grain, purely a genetic and sometimes life thing. The technique of performing it with the grain and then against the grain is the common method employed by professional barbers to do a classic shave. Some people are even fortunate enough to even be able to start a shave against the grain without any ingrown hairs or razor burn. The using both hands did surprise me though I must admit, I could see it leading to a few unfortunate one face side scarred incidents.

You need to bye a lot of old razors to master your skills before you can hone your favorite one. It takes much time. But you need to hone your razor 1-2 times per year. You loose your skills if you have no regular practice. I suppose it's smarter to use honing service instead. In Russia it costs 20-25 bucks. Not huge money, isn't it? The stones cost much more. Dear Sir-You can use either hand for either side of the face-whatever is comfortable. The key is practice and using a sharp razor. Takes around a year, although learning to hone can be a bitch-don't ask me how I know or why I use a disposable blade straight razor;)-John in Texas

      @@bahtszbedevi941 The main thing is ensuring you get the proper angle and not using too much pressure. Unlike with a cartridge razor, you want to let the weight of the blade do the work. I would recommend learning to use a safety razor first before moving to a straight razor. It's easier to learn and uses a similar technique, so it would be an easier transition.

    Very very cool. Fully dressed, clean shave on grown beard, video is slightly paced up however you can see how fast this can be done. My choice for a straight razor is the minimisation of waste that is achievable as at some point I did not feel good using a safety rasor since it's a mix of plastics and metals. This video is the one I was after, too many of the yuppi shaves around. So to sum it up on the downward pass (I skip the sharpening since I use disposable blades), lathering cream application, skin tentioning is the big one, various technical holds of blade to reach all areas, particularaly liked the reverse one, renew the cream on parts available as you go, as it gets absorbed by skin. Once its done on both sides, if you want a really close shave, you will re apply a coat of cream with the applicator so the cream goes as far as possible at micro level, and repeat the operation from bottom to top. Did I miss anything?

    Wait you're suppose to let the cream soak in?
    And what difference does proper shaving cream have compare to like the squeeze out like toothpaste but then it becomes foamy as you rub it on your face?
    I know how to sharpen knives and my razor is damn sharp but when i shave my hair doesn't go in 1 cut like the video...

I went to the Art of Shaving at the Mall of America and had my first straight shave ever. Talk about amazing. Nice tutorial, but you also need to discuss angles to hold it at. I start straight Shaving tomorrow. I have a Boker on my wish list.

      @Carnalpain 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A straight razor will cut cleaner than a safety razor, but that all encompasses the skill of the user and how sharp the straight razor is. If you are thinking of trying it out, just have to understand it will take time and patience.

    • @Foxtrot-jr5qu
      @Foxtrot-jr5qu ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no actual evidence that supports that claim and you just have to take the word of those who say that it does. I shave with both double edge, single edge and straight razors and I get pretty much the same results from all of them. I wouldn't necessarily call one better than the other, it's more like a personal preference and what works better for your skin, beard, shave style and skill. The only thing that it matters is what works for you instead of trying to force your opinion on everyone else.

    Lather looks to watery and thin for my liking..i like a thick lather...what i do is grab a soap puck..bloom it...swirl for about 30s-1m...(brush was soaked in hot tap water about 1m beforehand) start swirling in the bowl for 30s...put 4 drops of water in lather..swirl again 30s.. 4 more drops...swirl 30....then if its a really iffy soap ill add it once more....then swirl it on ...then paint it on...sometimes i use my fingers to realllly massage the suds in.....then its shave how you like for me 3 pass bbs wtg xtc atg...wash off cold tap water...pat dry with towel...apply a aftershave lotion have many i like...then i take a extra step that really helps apply a aftershave balm or moisturiser ..a very tiny tiny amount say mm 5-10c coin for your face neck and back of neck extra there...then thats about it ...same goes for when i use a shaving cream same lathering just maybe less water and sometimes no water is even needed if its a good cream.
