As a North Shields lad I loved your video 👍. My dad, who went to sea in his younger days, told me years ago when I was a lad, I'm 70 now, that the original Wooden Doll was a figurehead from an old sailing ship. Generations of local seafarers would cut a thin sliver of wood from the Wooden Doll to bring them good luck before going to sea. The Loading Bay is the old Ice Factory that made ice for the fishing fleet. I remember the old steam ferries that carried cars before the Tyne Tunnel was built, back when the Tyne was a working river! Again, fantastic video Eddy!
Cracking video Eddie,Iam a North Shields lad and own a business in the town centre it’s great to see someone bigging the area up as many people seem to be constantly slagging it off 👍
I’m from Doncaster and my lass lives in Newcastle and I’m always pestering her to take me doon the fish quay! I love it! Beautiful walk up to Tynemouth from there 🖤🤍👌🏼
I can’t get out and about so watching your videos is just absolutely fantastic. I can just smell the sea air, the fish and chips. Helen is looking very well btw 😊
My Grandad had a business on the quay for many decades - sadly it closed in 1973. Still pop down as often as I can - lots of fond memories Great to see the area evolve and thrive like it is today. Great video Eddy - thankyou
Eddie, the old wooden dolly was a fisherman’s pub, back in the day and according to me Dad, the fisherman used to cut a little off the ‘wooden dolly’ to bring them luck out to sea. When I was a kid I saw the original dolly down to her feet! Such an evocative part of the north east. X
My partner took me to Fish Quay for first time on Saturday gone. Had a great walk with the dog and a few pints in the Salty Sea Dog, and the Ships Cat. We loved it, going back in a week or two…! Great video 💯
Great video Eddie and Helen. You are doing Newcastle and Tyneside a service by hilighting these places, Never knew this place existed, Great video Stay safe 👍
My Mother is 93 and a North Shields lass. Lived on the bank top as a child, Father worked in Smiths Dock. We had her down there for Waterfront fish & chips for her birthday. The Wooden Dolly was has had a few different models, the original was in the square in the centre of Shields, it got vandalised and was removed. It was still there in the 70s when I was a lad. Its location is unknown, I think the council binned it. Did you notice the lovely modern building created from the old smokehouse, the unusual multiple small windows ? They are Ford transit windscreens modified for domestic use on that building (7.54mins - Its behind Helen's head in view). Ive sent your video to my Mother. Keep it up !
Loved the show Eddie & Helen - I could smell the sea and fish and chips all the way across the pond! Hope some skipper takes you on a fishing trip! You guys are great champions for the North East. It warms my heart! My great grandfather worked at Swan Hunters as a mould maker in 1900’s and helped build the propellers for the Mauratania - would you consider making a video doc. about NE shipyards? Durham lad in US.
Cheers David. I’ve done a video about the rise of industry on the Tyne on the West End but not NE shipyards as such. That’s quite a big topic to cover 😅
I have a brother who lives in the flats just past the pub, now closed. We go up when we can, but always up there for a few days over new year. Eat at the restaurants, at least 3 times. Just love the place. 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Just love it down there, been holidaying for about 50 yes down there all the way from fife. All round that area is lovely. The fish and chips restaurant along the front is great.so full of history.👌
Wow. When i came from o.seas. i went to darlington and ate a packet of winkels. Love the nirth of uk. Thankyou for taking us to south and north shields. And the collies...wow
I love the place, fished there for 50 years, in the 70s the ferry landing was the go to place to fish. Big cod and coalfish abound back then. Not allowed to fish on it now. But too commercialised now. And fishing spoilt due to dredging now. But that fish and chips place used to be Christians or Christianson's!!! But I never knew there was a fresh seafood shop where Karen got that lush platter. Great video eddy.
Hey Eddie great video mate and tbh you can't beat the shields ferry I've been going on it all my life from South Shields to North Shields and back and I can't recommend the ferry enough, I go on it once a week with the dog and go and have fish and chips (sometimes sausage and chips) then take the dog to the beach and it's amazing and its the way of life in my opinion. Oh and it was lovely to finally meet you, the dogs, and Helen at South Shields ferry landing last week before the Woman's Derby game shame yous beat us 2-1 but they say anything can happen in football these days, but again great video mate and keep up your amazing work and hope to see you all again soon. Dean.
Great video the fishermen used to chip a bit off the wooden doll it was believed that it gave them luck when they went to sea so my grandad used to tell me
Nice video Eddy. I loved going to the South Shields markets on the steam ferry across the Tyne. That was around 64 years ago. I should mention that smell of the Fish Quay is still there now. I did a trip out for a day on a prawn scraper or Scampi boat way back in 1969, to see if I was interested in going into the fishing industry. What a day! I loved it, but it wasn't to be.
My Dad used to live in the Irvin building opposite the Lowlights Tavern - great pace for a Sunday roast. Good seeing the likes of the Waterfront chippy and Sambuca still going strong too.
Wow, déjà vu Eddy. I’m immediately reminded of when we took the ferry from North Shields to South Shields during the pub crawl four months back. It is rather beautiful there. I used to go as a teenager when the fish markets were on.
The river side water front.,at north shields ,is the best fish and chips. I first visited in the 60s With my gran ,and still visiting now with my grandchildren
From Scotland here Eddie Mum born in Sunderland , so my grandparents on my Mums side from Sunderland way back before war days and on ma Dads side he born in Scotland but both Grandparents on Dads side from Newcastle way back in time All gone now likes but its life sadly for us all , and im now in North East last 5.5 yrs now and enjoying your programmes popping up on me back forth which gives some history into the regions ..I have heard of Fish keys in North Shields and have to oay it a visit sometime .. Ye like both Newcastle and Sunderland in their own ways The Mackems and the Tackems lol . Awe the best and Helen also , and the dogs . Awe best take care both you as said enjoying yer videos 👍
Lovely video. We are from the Midlands and love Tynemouth and North Shields. We're surprised how unknown the area is as a tourist destination. When we say we're going to Tynemouth people think we're going to Devon. Not a great fan of Air B&B for what they do to affordable housing so perhaps more hotel options are needed.
Visited the Fish quay the summer before last after watching your video. Even went back for a last fish'n'chips late lunch before taking the ferry across to Holland.
We live in a beautiful part of the world. It's a lovely walk along in to tynemouth then along see front. Fresh air and time to gather your thoughts. Peace everyone
£4.50 a pint for Cruz Campo!!!! 😢 Im in Seville where its made....£2.50 a pint here!! Another great video Eddie....We geordies in exile get very sentimental seeing places we grew up in....Keep them coming👍😀🍻

I was born in N Shields, socialised there for 25 years. There was two pubs near the current NS ferry landing called the Chain Locker opposite (now flats) and Port hole (now architect business). The wooden door fantastic little pub sold Sammy Smiths, beautiful old-fashioned pub inside. Allards, very successful business food, beers. Two other locations Tynemouth and Monkseaton. Duke Shed, class little place, food ales and live music. Lobo Rojo, very nice Mexican food. Salty Sea Dog busy night bar. Finally, The ships cat… very nice place for fresh fish, pizza, perfect pint and posh cocktails.
Lovely area. I think the area from North Shields to Whitley Bay is just stunning. I hope you get to do a fishing boat trip out in the North sea. That would be interesting.
Keep going past the Low Lights pub and you come to the Wheelhouse Coffee shop and under it the Engine Room (see what they did there?) a small live music venue. Across from them in the Smokehouse is 2 Tanners Bank an excellent bar. If you walk up the bank the OLL is on take a left and first right and you come to Flashouse bewery tap and Low Quay brewery tap. Also don't forget the Old Low Light heritage centre (nowt to do with the pub) with the history and heritage of North Shields on display.
Great video mate. We love going to The Fish Quay, it doesn’t stop the boss going without me when I was at work today tho. She said it was great to see you both 👍
In the summer, if you are lucky, you see pods of dolphins in Tynemouth. Seen them a few times, unreal to see in the north east. Tynemouth is a wonderful place, cracking pubs and eateries.
