Hi Eddie, thank you for your vlog on the history of North Shields and the Fish Quay. I am a local author and playwright brought up in what was known as the Ridges Estate in 1956 and all of my books and plays are centred around North Shields, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, and Whitley Bay. I was surprised that Tom Hadaway wasn't mentioned. Tom could be seen on the fish quay most mornings when I was serving my time as a 15 year old fish filleter back in 1971 as he had a fish shop in North Shields. Tom was also a prolific writer and playwright who wrote many plays about the fish quay. "In Fading Light, The Pigeon Man, God Bless thee Jackie Maddison and The Filleting Machine which prompted me to write a tribute play The Redundant Blade. Tom inspired me to write when he looked at my work one day and said "Keep writing Kidda you've got talent." Since then I have gone on to write 54 books and 26 plays. My first novel "Like Mother Like Son." was published by Lynn Davidson from South Shields. Tom also had a hand in the television series "When the Boat Comes In', with Sid Chaplin. Tom died in 1985 and There is a plaque to his memory on the corner of Howdon Road which was set up by the North Shields Heritage Project. I am very proud of my little town and its history and continue to write and put my stories on the North Shields Nostalgia website.
Thank you very much for the great message Terry. I’ve definitely missed a trick there but didn’t know anything about him. Would you be willing to email me to chat about the local area please? enquiries@tynesidelife.com Thank you Eddy
Really enjoyed this Video Eddie . My Dad was born and raised in North Shields . He actually fished out of that very Fish Quay . He moved to Canada in the early 60's after meeting my Mother . After my Mother passed away he moved back to North Shields where he lived out his remaining days . I have been over several times and always loved my time there . To this day I have many cousins who I stay in touch with there . This Video had several shots of locations that were very familiar to me . There is something about the Geordie culture and personality of the people there that is very unique and heart warming . Thank You for this trip down Memory Lane .

Fun fact. When Stan was a baby and a little boy and his parents went out to work, he was babysat by the grandparents of Sir Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard). In is autobiography 'Making It So' he said he remembers his grandparents saying as a child young Stan was the most happy and joyous child
Great video Eddie! Like you I loved watching Stan, Laurel and Hardy, growing up and didn't have a clue he spent some of his youth in North Shields. I'm from Kansas, married a beautiful Geordie lass from Whitley Bay (she hasn't lost her beauty in the slightest) and moved over here in 81. We live out in the sticks in North Cumbria but it is the northeast where my lyl heart lies - somewhere near St James's. After watching your super video, our task is to find those stone stairs down to the Quays, find the Homeless cafe for lunch and walk the quays. Please keep up with your super videos - they are great!
Hi Eddie, I just tune in now and then to hear your accent, and learn a lot about an area where my heart still lies, although I haven’t lived in the UK since 1970.

There is even a trendy egg sandwich shop.👍
Excellent video Eddy, I love listening to Sam Fender he gives hope about the future of British music because it's been a long time since we've had a musician as good as him imo.
Loved it! It's great to see North Shields as a prosperous town with what looks like a bright future that incorporates its past. Thanks for showcasing the town :-)
When I was at school in Cullercoats we were given a homework assignment to record all of the businesses in Bedford Street, North Shields. I believe there were more than 26 businesses operating there. It truly was a busy place, especially on Saturday mornings. Supermarkets weren't around so all shopping was done in the individual shops. When I visited some 50 years later it has become a ghost of its previous self. I hardly recognise the place. That said, there is hope for revival. A town near where I live in Australia has gone through the same cycle and is building back up. People seem to have tired of long drives to big shopping centres and are starting to shop locally. The prices are virtually the same and you don't have to drive 20-30 minutes to get into a multi-storey car park hell.
@@TynesideLife Yep. He was from Wallsend. If you search for "Tyne Pride wallsend ship picture" you can see photos of various ships being built at the bottom of Sting's street where he grew up. Unfortunately the street does not exist anymore but fortunately when they demolished it they found the foundations of the Roman fort at the end of the wall. Right enjoyed that. Very informative and well presented Eddie. I live in Leeds but love coming up there. Usually try and make it 3-4 times a year. I'd move up there in a shot if I could as Newcastle is a fantastic city, and 9 miles away you've got Fish Quay, Tynemouth, Cullercoats and Whitley Bay. You lucky buggers!! My ideal weekend is a day drinking down the Ouseburn, then next day start in the station bar at Tynemouth and work our way round the headland tipping our hat to Admiral C on the way, ending up for the finest pies on earth in the Low Lights Tavern. Always summat new opened up every time we come. Can't wait to be back up there again soon.
Another quality video Eddy, cheers for venturing out to the coast. There's loads more for you to get your teeth into along here. Love that you showcase the people and causes that often go under the radar in these towns.
I am going to Newcastle this weekend for a gig. Was thinking about maybe going to North Shields anyway. This video has made that a definitely - thanks!
Great video. Only just discovered this channel. Just to add for anyone checking it out not from ‘Shields is that the Fish Quay (behind the Fish Market and right along in both directions) has been quite significantly gentrified. There are a number of independent bars and barista served coffee shops including the fabulous ‘Wheel House Coffee’ on Tanners Bank. There are a large number of restaurants that specialise in everything from Fish n Chips (obviously), Grilled Meats, Burgers, Bistro style food and an excellent Mexican restaurant (Lobo Rojo) in the ground floor of the brilliantly refurbished Irvin Bldg (30 seconds from the Low Lights Tavern). As you head towards Smiths Dock (inland) The Salt Market Social (which is mentioned at one point) is a street food market place similar to the Hawkers Mkt under the Tyne Bridge and is great for families or a night out. It is also very close to the ferry crossing. The Smoke Houses (big industrial apartment blocks that hang over river) at Smiths Dock are home to the ‘31 The Quay’ restaurant serving high end and indulgent dishes. Tanners Bank at one end of the Fish Quay is home to the wonderful ‘3 Tanners Bank’ bar and leads right up to Northumberland Park, a landscaped park with visitors centre, duck ponds, play grounds, bike track, 13th century ruins, fairy/ elf trails and served by the Pow Burn tributary that runs into the Tyne. Adjacent to the Fish Quay is a small beach within the mouth of the Tyne that is very popular with families and dog walkers. There is a cycle and walkway from the beach that runs in front of the brutalist Knotts Flats and up to Lord Collingwood’s monument that overlooks the mouth of the river, the black middens (a reef famous for ship wrecking) and beyond. The old Life Guard lookout (in the video) can be visited as it is right behind the monument. From there you have arguably the best view of Tynemouth Priory and you are now 400/500 yards from the Priory, Castle and Tynemouth Front Street. There’s a lot to North Shields (including a relatively successful non-league football team) and it’s a lot bigger than most people think. It’s also home to Tynemouth Cricket Club, Tynemouth Golf Club and Percy Park Rugby Club. A bit of a long comment but I hope some/ any of that is useful to people.
Stan Laurel performed in Blyth regularly too as his father owned Theatres in the town....there is a sculpture of him along with a young local Soldier & Policeman who passed away in Ridley Park...Blyth beach and Quayside are on the up...you should visit(?)
Nowt can beat an old style trip on a ferry, there’s one still in operation from carlingford in Louth in the Republic of Ireland to warren point across the water in Northern Ireland, operates a couple of times a day but it’s a nice novelty to have 😃
th-cam.com/video/zRLZXAt822g/w-d-xo.html Oh here’s that ferry trip I was talking about if you’re interested in looking, beautiful scenery in that part of Ireland, at the foot of the mourne mountains 😃
Great video Eddie… I’ve been to North Shields quay area a few times (The Ships Cat does lovely food!) but still plenty I’d like to explore. Your channel is coming on leaps & bounds… well done and keep up the good work 👍🏻 Three of my favourite places in Newcastle are St James Park, Tyneside Cinema and the Lit & Phil. The latter is well worth a visit if you haven’t been… it’s a real gem in Newcastle. It’s like stepping back in time inside- a real peaceful haven from the hustle & bustle. I often go there to read a book in the comfy armchairs. Lots of history as well… Joseph Swan demonstrated the first lightbulb there.
Definitely. The sense of awe and wonder when exploring the Lit & Phil is like nowhere else in the City. You can almost hear George Stephenson and Joseph Swan describing their inventions when you’re sat there. Easily one of my favourite places. Random fact: The Lit & Phil was the first place in Britain where anyone saw/ was introduced to a Duck-billed Platypus.

Another great video Eddie, I can't even remember the last time I was in North Shields, but I would definitely go there to have a look round based on this experience.
Your videos get better and better and judging by the comments many others agree, well done. A couple of interesting things about North Shields / Tynemouth that you may not know:- Wylam Brewery recently released a "Betty the Bat" beer, named after a famous North Shields landlady. Check it out, great story. Jimmy Hendrix visited the fish and chip shop in Tynemouth front street, the plaque is in the window (well it was last time I looked about a year ago). Keep up the good work 🙂
Great Video Eddy, love your Channel. If you want a little more history, Roger Moore was filmed on tiger stairs going down to the quay. John Dobson architect lived in what’s now the pineapple pub. Ralph gardener was a school and named after the man who took on newcastle and was imprisoned over shipping, not to mention Neil tenant from pet shop boys growing up here :~) keep the videos coming, love them. Ps The Two Pennies bar on the Georgian square is worth a visit.
My last trip to Newcastle I got a day rider ticket and went to South Shields then got the ferry over to North Shields. There is a great chippy at the fish quay. The food was fantastic then I took a walk along the coast to Tynemouth to walk it off. Great way to spend an afternoon. Great video as always sir. Hope u are cheering on the Rangers for me on Wednesday keep your fingers crossed for us in the final.
Just moved back to the North East after ten years away. Very much enjoying the videos. I've learned stuff about Tyneside I didn't know despite living here previously for 30 years. It's changed a great deal too, so it's a great opportunity to catch up. (I saw you on the Metro platform at Central Station yesterday and was just about to greet you as a long lost friend when I suddenly realised I don't know you, or you me.) Great stuff. :-)
Great video Eddy, as they say you learn something every day lol some excellent points raised in this video well worth a watch for those that don't know much about North Shields like myself because all I knew was the typical facts where Sam Fender, Longstaffs and Steve Watson came apart from that I knew very little.
Hi Eddy, thanks for highlighting North Shields (though I am a Sandancer) I used to work for Stag Line Limited in Howard Street N/S and their building which is listed can be seen clearly from the south side of the Tyne bearing a Stag's Head. Stag Line had an incredible history and only went bust in the 80's. Just though I would give them a mention. Keep up the good work
There is a wonderful cycle route from central Newcastle to Tynemouth that goes past Fish quay! and obviously a stop off for Fish and chips when you get there 😁
Born and raised until I was six in Percy Main, before we moved to Newcastle, I have very vague memories of North Shields in the mid-1960s (left in 1968) so great to see videos like this. I have memories of a 'huge' (probably wasn't) concrete ship we'd play on at possibly Cullercoats? Anyway, I played on The Lonnen in Percy Main probably from about the age of four or five. Happy times!
@@Toon1972 Ah, if only, Gary. I moved away to Edinburgh in 1987 then Aberdeen then back to Edinburgh then Derbyshire 12 years ago! I have been back to Percy Main once (I was one of the first set of pupils into the new school opened in January 1968 so went to view it and they let me in which was nice). I'm sure I'll be back one day!
lovely place, used to be an awesome restaurant called the river cafe with a cracking Sunday lunch but I think it closed down, my granny's seat is just up road from where u were overlooking the North Sea so we go there on her birthday and the anniversary of her passing etc. Cant beat the view
Another top video Eddie. Born and bred from North Shields. Like you said not the best place in the world. But the Fish Quay is the place to be for a good night out. Your a top guy. More videos please ,👍🏻
Hi Eddie, great stuff mate, you could do the same in South Shields, I thought you would have mentioned Collingwood and the huge memorial overlooking the river on the north side. Causey arch would also be an interesting one to cover.
Great video i love these types of vid. Well done keep it up. I was on the fish quay a couple of weeks ago for a coffee and a walk from Tynemouth. Yep it’s fantastic place on the quay
Hi, Eddie great interesting video, I am sure u know but Philip of Rising Damp fame, was called Don Warrington, named after Warrington rd in Elswick where he lived in his early days! Mark. Blyth.
PS something missed from the video was bands like lindisfarne who were based in North Shields when they started out and direct from North Shields and probably the most famous of bands are "The Animals" with their classic and timeless hit House of the Rising Sun.
My home town (well near Preston Village). The hospital was located at what is now Haswell Gardens...The meadowell riots happened on the day of my 21st Birthday (Sep 10th).. Two of the towns famous sons are former Newcastle player Steve Watson and the actor Terry Molloy who was the third actor to portray Dalek creator Davros in Dr Who, as well as Mike Tucker in The Archers on R4
Great informative video Eddy I enjoy watching this sort of content especially when it's about something that I don't know a lot about such as North Shields.
Great video Eddy. Great to see Stan Laurel statue again, not sure if know but the statue was sculpted by South Shields artist and my Dad, Bob Olley back in the 90s.
@@TynesideLife Yes Eddy I am, his work can pop up in the most random places, we were sent a photo of the Westoe Netty hanging above a bar in the Falkland Islands recently 😂
My Dad worked in the building where salt market social is, that was a replacement for their old place that was demolished for the flats towards the ferry landing, they used to service life jackets, make helicopter nets etc, fun fact they done all the netting for metroland's play area when it opened

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed it. I’m flabbergasted I didn’t know that and not sure how it missed my radar 😲 My small defence is that I’ve lived most of my adult life away from the area and so North Shields isn’t somewhere I’m very familiar with.

Back in the 70’s me dad used to drink at the low lights - I was about 6 or 7 and used to “play” the old piano in the side bar. The old lads in there used to give me a few coppers ( probably to stop me playing lol ) canny vid kidda
Hi Your videos are usually really good and I have learned a lot about part of the Northeast that I do not know that well.... born and bred in South Shields. Sadly I must admit this one missed the mark. North sheilds has sooo much history and you seam to have concentrated on sudo political disadvantagement (hubs, homeless cafes etc)..... the walk from the ferry to the fish quay would have provided you with so much more non-political interests.
Hi Allister, thanks got your comment. If you follow my channel you’ll know that I do more than just one video on particular areas as I can’t fit everything into just one video. I recently did a video about the ferry and covered some of the areas that you mention and just for info, I don’t really have any pseudo political motivations or inclinations, I just record what jumps out at me at the time. I would however take exception to your description of these facilities as ‘pseudo’. It comes across as insensitive. I’ll be doing more videos on North Shields soon and covering a range of different interests, including, cultural, political, historical and contemporary. Watch out for them 👍🏻

It’s also home to Tynemouth Cricket Club, Tynemouth Golf Club and Percy Park Rugby Club. A bit of a long comment but I hope some/ any of that is useful to people.
Great advert and info for the viewers thank you 👍🏻
Stan Laurel performed in Blyth regularly too as his father owned Theatres in the town....there is a sculpture of him along with a young local Soldier & Policeman who passed away in Ridley Park...Blyth beach and Quayside are on the up...you should visit(?)
Thanks for the information Ross 🤛🏻
When i was a bairn my dad always used to take us over on the ferry to the fish quay festival, dome great memories.
Should go back in the summer and go on the ferry over to South Shields, Loving these local area videos, Another smasher, Thanks Eddie
I’m definitely going to do that Susie! Don’t think I’ve been on the ferry before
Nowt can beat an old style trip on a ferry, there’s one still in operation from carlingford in Louth in the Republic of Ireland to warren point across the water in Northern Ireland, operates a couple of times a day but it’s a nice novelty to have 😃
th-cam.com/video/zRLZXAt822g/w-d-xo.html Oh here’s that ferry trip I was talking about if you’re interested in looking, beautiful scenery in that part of Ireland, at the foot of the mourne mountains 😃
Great video Eddie… I’ve been to North Shields quay area a few times (The Ships Cat does lovely food!) but still plenty I’d like to explore.
Your channel is coming on leaps & bounds… well done and keep up the good work 👍🏻
Three of my favourite places in Newcastle are St James Park, Tyneside Cinema and the Lit & Phil.
I’ve never been in there. Sounds great Ian thank you! 🤜🏻
@@inkledoodle6503 hi you’re a great source of information and I like your Bali videos.
Please feel free to email me at enquiries@tynesidelife.com as I’d love to chat and pick your brains. 👍🏻
Hi eddy 👋 great video thanks so much for sharing 👍go there a lot 👍great fish and chips too 👍
Cheers Denis 👍🏻
Another great video Eddie, I can't even remember the last time I was in North Shields, but I would definitely go there to have a look round based on this experience.
🤛🏻
Your videos get better and better and judging by the comments many others agree, well done. A couple of interesting things about North Shields / Tynemouth that you may not know:- Wylam Brewery recently released a "Betty the Bat" beer, named after a famous North Shields landlady. Check it out, great story. Jimmy Hendrix visited the fish and chip shop in Tynemouth front street, the plaque is in the window (well it was last time I looked about a year ago). Keep up the good work 🙂
Glad you’re enjoying them Bri. Yeah I was in Tynemouth last week or so and took a photo of the Jimmi Hendrix plaque. Didn’t know about the rest 🤜🏻
@@christinecatt5391 greetings Marisa! Thanks for reaching out and watching my videos 😃
Brilliant video! My Granddad was from North Shields and I look forward to showing my Dad this! Thanks👌
Glad you like it Pete 🤜🏻
Great Video Eddy, love your Channel. If you want a little more history, Roger Moore was filmed on tiger stairs going down to the quay. John Dobson architect lived in what’s now the pineapple pub. Ralph gardener was a school and named after the man who took on newcastle and was imprisoned over shipping, not to mention Neil tenant from pet shop boys growing up here :~) keep the videos coming, love them. Ps The Two Pennies bar on the Georgian square is worth a visit.
Great info cheers Scott 👍🏻
Was the Ralph Gardner school where Gardner park is now built on ?
@@markillingworth1972 yes
My last trip to Newcastle I got a day rider ticket and went to South Shields then got the ferry over to North Shields. There is a great chippy at the fish quay. The food was fantastic then I took a walk along the coast to Tynemouth to walk it off. Great way to spend an afternoon. Great video as always sir. Hope u are cheering on the Rangers for me on Wednesday keep your fingers crossed for us in the final.
Of course Tommy 🤜🏻 great memories too
Just moved back to the North East after ten years away. :-)
Haha! 😂 you should have just come up and said hi.
Really glad you’re enjoying the videos David 🤜🏻
Great video Eddie, as a North Shields lad I’m glad to see you exploring the area
Cheers Alex 👍🏻
Great video Eddy, as they say you learn something every day lol some excellent points raised in this video well worth a watch for those that don't know much about North Shields like myself because all I knew was the typical facts where Sam Fender, Longstaffs and Steve Watson came apart from that I knew very little.
Glad you enjoyed it bud 🤜🏻
Hi Eddy, thanks for highlighting North Shields (though I am a Sandancer) I used to work for Stag Line Limited in Howard Street N/S and their building which is listed can be seen clearly from the south side of the Tyne bearing a Stag's Head. Stag Line had an incredible history and only went bust in the 80's. Just though I would give them a mention. Keep up the good work
Thanks Jim. Great message and memories 👍🏻
There is a wonderful cycle route from central Newcastle to Tynemouth that goes past Fish quay! and obviously a stop off for Fish and chips when you get there 😁
Do one on Wallsend! Great video eddy loving the mix up of content!
Waaallsend
It’s on the list. Cheers Lewis 🤜🏻
Great what you do Eddie! Great video with great NE people. Nice.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Born and raised until I was six in Percy Main, before we moved to Newcastle, I have very vague memories of North Shields in the mid-1960s (left in 1968) so great to see videos like this. I have memories of a 'huge' (probably wasn't) concrete ship we'd play on at possibly Cullercoats? Anyway, I played on The Lonnen in Percy Main probably from about the age of four or five. Happy times!
Great memories Tom 👍🏻
Great message and memories Jamie 🤜🏻
Another top video Eddie. Born and bred from North Shields. Like you said not the best place in the world. But the Fish Quay is the place to be for a good night out. Your a top guy. More videos please ,👍🏻
Thanks Kevin 🤜🏻
Hi Eddie, great stuff mate, you could do the same in South Shields, I thought you would have mentioned Collingwood and the huge memorial overlooking the river on the north side. Causey arch would also be an interesting one to cover.
Cheers mate, I’ve done a couple of videos on South Shields and the Collingwood story is a video on its own for the near future. 👊🏻👍🏻

Thank you Eddie for covering my area North Shields plenty of history.

PS something missed from the video was bands like lindisfarne who were based in North Shields when they started out and direct from North Shields and probably the most famous of bands are "The Animals" with their classic and timeless hit House of the Rising Sun.
Great bands Martin and thank you for the info 🤜🏻

My home town (well near Preston Village). The hospital was located at what is now Haswell Gardens...The meadowell riots happened on the day of my 21st Birthday (Sep 10th)..
Two of the towns famous sons are former Newcastle player Steve Watson and the actor Terry Molloy who was the third actor to portray Dalek creator Davros in Dr Who, as well as Mike Tucker in The Archers on R4

Hi Mike, glad you enjoyed it. I’m flabbergasted I didn’t know that and not sure how it missed my radar 😲 My small defence is that I’ve lived most of my adult life away from the area and so North Shields isn’t somewhere I’m very familiar with.

Watch out for them 👍🏻
@@TynesideLife Hi, really loved the videos about the quayside and the origins of Geordie's.... fast forwarded most of the North Shields one (I think I have actually watched it twice).... sorry it must be my Insensitive Nature.
