    In Philadelphia's "Great Northeast" Hires was THE root beer to enjoy. It was several years later before I discovered A & W Root Beer. I grew up in the suburbs north of Philadelphia. As a boy, my mom, and two aunts would take the kids shopping in Willow Grove. It became a family tradition to enjoy a hot dog and Hires Root Beer at the G.C. Murphy 5 & 10 cent store.
    In fact, my little brother would NOT eat anything other than a G.C. Murphy hot dog and Hires Root Beer when mom took the kids shopping.
    Hires was among those unforgettable special treats that I enjoyed as a boy.

    Best root beer ever made, been after them for years to bring it back to Canada, last year Kisco freezie made a crush pack with hires in it so let's hope someday they sell it to somebody who will bring it back. Today the best root beer is Johnny Ryan, they also have a birchbeer. Great doc and thanks for doing this

      I haven't tried Johnny Ryan yet. My current best of the bests are Hank's, Sprecher, and Henry Weinhard's, but I'm always trying new ones. For me, one of the main interests in brands like Hires and A&W is nostalgia -- they take me back to my childhood. :-)

    Your script is directly from wiki omg...Hires Root Beer was created by Philadelphia pharmacist Charles Elmer Hires. The official story is that Hires first tasted root beer, a traditional American beverage dating back to the colonial era, while on his honeymoon in 1875.[1] However, historical accounts vary and the actual time and place of the discovery may never be known.[2] By 1876, Hires had developed his own recipe and was marketing 25-cent packets of powder which each yielded five gallons of root beer. At Philadelphia's Centennial Exposition in 1876, he cultivated new customers by giving away free glasses of root beer. Hires marketed it as a solid concentrate of sixteen wild roots and berries. It claimed to purify the blood and make rosy cheeks.[3] In 1884, he began producing a liquid extract and a syrup for use in soda fountains, and was soon shipping root beer in kegs and producing a special fountain dispenser called the "Hires Automatic Munimaker." In 1890, the Charles E. Hires Company incorporated and began supplying Hires root beer in small bottles[4][5] claiming over a million bottles sold by 1891.[6]
    But Hires's choice of name for his product caused a problem: the word "beer" drew the wrath of the temperance movement[citation needed]. He had his root beer tested by a laboratory, and trumpeted their conclusion that a glass of his root beer contained less alcohol than a loaf of bread.[citation needed] Hires Root Beer was promoted as "The Temperance Drink" and "the Greatest Health-Giving Beverage in the World." Hires advertised aggressively, believing "doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you are doing, but nobody ELSE does."[1]

      No, not quite dead -- just being intentionally kept on life support. It's still being produced; it's just clearly being kept to a very minimal production. As long as it isn't discontinued, I'll still hold out hope for its full renaissance some day.

      @@StamfordBridge neither have I. I am trying to stay away from alcohol entirely. I've been clean from birth. But, soon, I'm gonna try a VODKA brand mudshake. I.E, according to my friend, if its VODKA brand, it's the good shit. So...when I'm able to call my boyfriend again, I'm gonna try it on cam. Wonder how he will find a possibly drunk 19 year old sub boi to be

    • @StamfordBridge
      @StamfordBridge 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Zynet_Eseled Well, if you’re not used to the taste of booze, vodka is not a bad place to start as it has no taste. Not that you asked for my advice, but I’d definitely say go easy on the volume of your first tasting if you’re not used to the effects of alcohol.
      Me, I largely avoid booze these days for a different reason: it gives me (more of) a gut!

    Fwiw: currently the best price I have found is about two bucks a can (for a twelve pack) via Jet.com (and no, I'm not affiliated in any way -- just passing on info). It's odd to me that specialty online root beer/soda stores don't carry it, but giant corps like Jet and Amazon do. Sadly, I can't find new bottles being sold anywhere.

    not quite certain who these 3 are but kids can not have a good comparison of root beers just because of age, the one guy that touts dads root beer is strange, dad's root beer is awful, tastes like mud so if you are young and love the taste of mud thinking it is the taste of root beer the yea sure your analysis of root beer will be way off.
