Hi you two. I have been by the current A&W store in Lodi and now thanks to you, I now know the history of that great tasting root beer. It's nice that the both of you can explore places and things together and have fun doing it.When Angie and I were first married and the first 30 years of marriage, we were gone every weekend to who knows where but we always had fun finding historical places together. Your videos bring back much joyous times for us both. Thanks for the memories Jim& Angie
I have ordered some memorabilia from this Lodi location such as old mugs and the customer service has always been great. As a matter of fact, I'm having a glass of milk right now in an A&W rootbeer mug that I ordered from Lodi! Hello to the good folks in Lodi!
Hello! I have so many fond memories of A&W in Lodi! My sister was the last car hop to wear roller skates. I was also there for the worlds biggest root beer float with Guinness Book of World Records. I drank so many root beer floats that I haven't had one since, lol!
@@lrrygonzales Wow that's cool! As much as McDonald's and Burger King are doing well, A&W will always hold a place in my heart. Enjoy the nice weather there in Lodi, we are getting snow in Winterpeg (Winnipeg, Manitoba) right now!
My dad worked for A&W in Modesto he made the syrup for the root beer 🍺 he would come home smelling like root beer, the plant was on Mitchell & Yosemite now it’s sciabicas olive oil
👋 Hi Jeff, Hi Sarah. Oh, a big thank you for this blast from the past. As a kid, drank mostly A and W root beer. Most other soft drinks didn't sit well. ( burp). I absolutely remember the named burgers and the floats. I also remember a jug that more looked like a jug for hooch. One was in this video. Great trip down memory lane. I've told my 85 year old neighbor about your channel. He's enjoying it. Sometimes, we compare notes ! Cute Mama Bear face walked with you at the end. 🐻 Thanks!
I go here all the time, being that it's only about ten minutes away from home. Best Root Beer Floats around . I couldn't imagine Lodi without this A & W.
Awesome video- Have been to that A & W in the past, our family lived from 1965-1976 at 723 14th street in Modesto- between G and H streets. Some of the money us 4 brothers made mowing lawns, raking leaves, working at granny's dairy in the summer was spent at the A & W on the corner of 14th and G in Modesto. The Teen Burger was my favorite, washed down with a Root Beer Float. We lived within a block of A & W, Dairy Queen, and Dutch Treat. Great memories growing up in that part of Modesto- and by the way, we may well have been members of the 10 or 20 gallon club- remember well those glass gallon jugs. Can't remember for sure, but I think we had to put a deposit on them when we bought one and brought it home. Thanks for doing these vids.
Oh wow, you just triggered my memory of the times we'd go to A&W and come back home with those giant glass bottles filled with root beer in Modesto! Thanks for recognizing our videos! We appreciate you watching!
Yes up here in Canada you had to put a deposit on the glass gallon jug for the root beer, I think it was 25 cents. You could also buy 2 quarts of the A&W beverages that came in a carton similar to the ones milk comes in. I don't remember the root beer being made in store but I do remember going down stairs and changing over the containers that contained the flavour liquid that made up the drinks. We use to make the onion rings in house down in the basement.
I was a carhop for A&W back in the 70s in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It was my first job and I loved it as I was able to serve customers while working outside. We had all different kind of items on the menu such as tacos, deep-dish apple pie, fish platers and French onion soup. Which was actually "Campbells" canned soup. I know because I used to open the cans and place it in the warmer. The croissants were however, made fresh in the restaurant. Made many good friends in those days, how I wish they'd come back.
my Favorite Beer.. A&W Root Beer. has been my fave for 50+yrs and still visit A&W once a week up here in Oregon. next time I'm in California I'll be stopping back by Lodi for a taste of my favorite Beer once again, or maybe in Modesto next time.. they still have a few up here in Oregon like in Florence, Oakridge and Riddle..and it's only 4miles from my house. yep I'm blessed to have it so close. Great Episode you two. Thanks for sharing this American history.
My Uncle and Family Ran a A&W Root beer Stand in Washington State, Indeed there was a Mama Burger Papa Burger, Teen Burger, Baby Burger and for a while in the 70's a Grandpa Burger (with 3 Hamburger Patties!) I remember my cousins in their uniforms with the change machine worn on a belt around their waists waiting on cars as they drove into their order station. I miss the frosty mug of root beer on the window tray along with my Mama burger and fries. my favorite was a Root beer Freeze with a side car of vanilla ice cream and a Coney Island. Oh please, take me back!
Where at in Washington state? I owe the A&W In Toppenish Washington. We dropped the name years ago because A&W was heading down a path we didn’t think was best. We Changed the name to Dad’s and still there today.
@@jbenziggy I have been fortunate to travel but always miss the days in U.S. when we got to take family road trips. A&W was always there for the Taylor clan. My father was 38 years with Safeway.
We use to go to the A&W in Vacaville, CA back in the 1960,s... My baby brother would get a free tiny mug of root beer...And,yes they did have Daddy, Mama, and Baby burgers... It was the best....
Just two blocks west of the fair, so sad to see a vacant lot last time I was there. Now it's a poor imitation a 1/2 mile north combined with another FF place. They ruined it and took away all of the fun, if it was still the original it would be a retro destination gold mine...
I still remember the old A&W stand as a kid. That was the best root beer on a hot summer day.😛 all the stands in Wisconsin are all but closed now, just a few now.
My first job was at an A&W! And I’ve been to an A&W in Singapore and Canada. I made many, many batches of root beer while I worked there. We used a canoe oar reserved just for the purpose of stirring it all up before it was chilled and delivered to the taps as draft!
Hello angel people that is awesome I still remember when I was a child I had my first sweet root beer float and I was 7 years old when I had my first a&w Root beer
A&W is still very popular up here in Canada. I live in a town of about 150K people and there are 4 or 5 here. And if you're lucky you can get free root beer lollipops when you visit. They're amazing!
It’s very popular here my city of 500k has 8 of them. It would be interesting to see how many total there are in Canada vs other fast food restaurants. I am sure Tim Horton’s has the most locations but I bet a and w is second place
Hello Jeff and Sarah! I have rememberances of the Lodi A & W. I grew up in Lodi. High school class of 1975. Born in 1957. My grandfather was Lloyd Madison. His family owned the Madison hardware store in town. In early 20th century through business deals the Madison family aquired property containing houses. One was used to house the a & w when first moved to lodi ave. So my grand father became the landlord for the business current location. Plus i worked there a short time in 1973.
Great memories of what a treat it was to go to A&W. I remember getting the gallon of Root Beer too. Think it had a deposit, don't remember. Also the treys were popular for you know what ....although I never had one, but seen them around.
Great video. Did you know that Benjamin Holt designed the first catapillar bulldozer in Stockton. Also worked on a secret military weapon, nicknamed the "tank". The Holt family still lives in Stockton.
Funny info but my father went on strike against Caterpillar and the Holts in Stockton. Back when the unions meant something. All the men were out for weeks. Won't tell you how it ended since it was pretty rough and so-called in those days, scabs, we're involved. I know the mod eventually corrupted the Union dtstem, but at that time it was simply the workers whom were seeking better wages. They would take turns marching for hours, week after week with only a pittance for subsistence. I was proud of my father and heartbroken at the same time. Rough Christmas that year. My first introduction to dirty politics and beside learning about voting in school, was proud to learn about being a citizen and our founding fathers with the Constitution. This is so truly missing in our schools with the evil replacement of the basically hate America teaching now being taught.
So uhhh haven’t seen any of the other videos, but is she this much of a charm and pleasure to have on camera? Really seemed in the restaurant she, didn’t want to be there at all and wearing sunglasses inside is always a solid look. However I lived in Lodi and loved this A&W everything was always solid and nostalgic to the history.
here in California we had a A&W restaurant, but I remember in the middle 1960s to early 70s we parked in a parking stall with speakers and they carried out the food on a tray and we ate in the car sort of like a drive-in.its a TOMMYS BURGERS now, but its still there though the area you parked in is now extended out for seating inside.i remember the root beer floats.
Really interesting Never A&W was first in Lodi. When I lived in Healdsburg CA we had a Hires Root Beer stand in one part of town. And a A&W stand down by the river. I remember you could the Root Beer spice at the grocery store I think it made by Hires. My grandmother use make homemade Root Beer. Do you remember the Orange Juice along the highway that were shaped like a orange. We had all kinds of neat things when I was kid
I almost forgot lol. When I worked at A&W I created a milkshake that had all of the ingredients you use to make a Banana Split. It kind of caught on for a while & the owner liked it but because it wasn't an A&W menu item they couldn't put it on the menu but we could make it as a request item, so I told people about it & they liked it lol. So you could say I was ahead of my time making a Banana Split flavored ice cream product. A&W also had the best French Fries of any of the Hamburger Chains. They had kind of a breading or batter coating & they were seasoned with seasoning salt. Sadly, I don't think they make them like that anymore.
Visited a A&W in Deerlodge, Montana in 2017. Went back in 2021 and it was closed down and for sale. The other one I know about is near Napa a little north. Love the Root Beer. We had one in Lamont, ca where I live it also closed down. That is where I collected all my glass mugs I was a teenager. Still have some of them, especially the little shot mugs.
Very COOL ... never considered the history... We had an A&W in Lemoore CA back in my early years... It was closed up probably in early 70’s and a Skate Park was built on the location in the 80’s... Hanford has one that I haven’t been to in decades... I just read online that the A&W in Visalia CA , an original from 1967 is closing... victim of the needless Shutdown ( IMO )... THANK YOU CALIFORNIA...
an A&W was located a couple blocks from where i grew up and we had baby mugs in my family's cupboard for decades... The building still stands, with the drive-in carports, only now it's a pizza joint. Did they invent the r/b float too?...And A&W is still serving in my hometown in combo with KFC. 🍺🍔
History Hunters You're a Sweet Soul, I thought it was so wonderful that you love your Mom to do that with her and your Son, y'all brought me to Tears from the Love I saw, and your Mom is a Gem, I hope the Best for you all, Thank you for replying, it means so much right now, love from Tennessee 🌻👩🌾🕊️
I love A W root beer! I can only get it on holiday in US or Canada but worth the wait! Just had my 1st teen burger with double paddies and had my 1st AW break fast with coffee it blew my head off so strong lol it loved it so much!
We had an A and W in Pismo Beach , ca when I was growing up. Today it is a Mexican restaurant but you can tell it used to be A and W. They even had car hops on roller skates.
Another great video and wonderful history lesson. Thank you Jeff & Sarah for another fun history lesson. Just some trivia, we have 6 A&W Outlets here in Singapore, including one at the Jewel Terminal at Changi Airport. Well done guys!
@@jbenziggy Work. Was in Kuala Lumpur for 10 years prior. Originally from Australia. Also spent 2 years living in NC. Favourite spot in CA; San Diego. Favourite drive; SD to LA!
In the seventies, I was assigned to Castle AFB in Atwater, where I "discovered" A&W. (There was an A&W on the outskirts of Corona, where I grew up, but, never ate there, had a favorite hamburger joint in town.) Ate a lot of hamburgers at the Atwater stand. Last A&W visited was in town outside of Kadena AB on Okinawa. To this day, laugh about "having to go all the way to Japan" to get our A&W mugs! 😉
We still have A&Ws in our neck of the woods! We appreciate you watching and commenting! And I still have all of the mugs I bought in Russell, Kansas, hometown of Bob Dole who used to eat there.
I've remembered Peanuts doing some A&W root beer and cream soda commercials in the early 90's. A&W also did special limited edition collectible cans with Snoopy on them as well. You would see some A&W Peanuts merchandises in an A&W restaurant location. Root beer known to be Snoopy's favorite drink and A&W must be his favorite root beer brand. I did a drawing of Snoopy wearing his orange "World's Greatest Float Maker" shirt from the commercials and carrying an A&W root beer float on a frost mug and submitted the drawing on DeviantArt.
Andrew Black thanks! You know what? Ever since that visit a year ago I have been absolutely hooked on Diet A&W so that visit was important for me to reacquaint myself with a wonderful drink!
My local A&W in the 70's had a 'hot toddy' drink with a very distinctive flavor. I loved that drink, but can't find anyone else who remembers drinking it, let alone a recipe that might be duplicated!
We have a Stewart's Root Beer and Hot Dog here in Huntington, WV that is a clone of the picture at 2.25. Been there, unchanged, since 1932 and owned by the same family. BTW, re: Blondie, they were also in a series of movies from about 1938-50, and also on radio for many years. Same actors in the films and radio.
jeff and sarah i saw your high noon history video, also, that a and w in lodi has a self service root beer tap at the counter , drink all the root beer you want on your visit
My parents owned the A&W that was in Patterson Calif. mid 1970's to early 80's all of us worked there doing jobs for mom. my dad operated his Dodge Dealership down the street where I worked....we lived in Modesto. The building is still there on Highway 33.
There's an A&W location in my state, Rhode Island. This one is more of a drive-thru than a restaurant. It was next to a duckpin bowling alley in Greenville, Smithfield, Rhode Island that no longer exists, which I used to go to when my dad was still alive. The spot where the bowling alley used to be is currently a Walgreens pharmacy location that used to be a Rite Aid. I've remembered of these hot dogs with ground beef and onions on them at A&W. I don't eat them anymore because I'm a vegetarian since 2004. It would be interesting if A&W in the USA started to some vegetarian, maybe even vegan options somewhere in the future.
I love A W Root Beer, Your Wife doesn't seem to be very interested in the Collective Mug.😂😂. Our A andW was in with Kentucky Fried Chicken , but it was discontinued. 😷
Well crap!! The things I just don’t know!! To think all the years I delivered in Lodi and didn’t know that!! In Woodland we lost our A&W years ago.. don’t know why.. So a lot of focus on memorabilia here and I have heard in other episodes you and Sara talk about it.. so I am up for a History Hunters ball cap and tank top maybe a mug or tumbler.. and a wind breaker for those fall trips through the cemetery!!
I bought a bunch in Russell, Kansas once as I stopped by to see where Bob Dole lived. That was like 1999. My next mug purchase was the one in Lodi you see here. I have it on my desk!
We like to take the grandkids to our Modesto A & W's on G street, Its a BLAST from the Past and on Friday nights during the summer they have a vintage car cruze in with a live Elvis dudes trying to be cool??? Thanks for another Great video I'm hooked!!!
My room mate remembers getting small 5 cent glasses of root beer with her Mom and sister. I noticed a box in their display for root beer ice cream. I never knew that was a thing. I bet it made a great root beer float. A&W is my favorite root beer. I also like birch beer but I have trouble finding it. Do they even make it anymore? 🙂💕
The burger family was made by my father Bill Swan at international fiberglass along with many other iconic fiberglass statues which are in a short Amazon ebook called "The man behind the mufflerman ".
Hires was the 1st root beer commercially sold in 1875. Sarsaparilla/Root Beer was originally a drink made by Native Americans. Root Beer was sold as early as 1840 sold in saloons & was in stores by 1860. You know the Western movies like 'Shane' etc, show Sarsaparilla being sold in Saloons. In 1960 the FDA outlawed Sarsaparilla & Root Beer because Sarsaphras leaves & roots were found to be carcinogenic which brought about todays newer recipes. I remember having my 1st Sarsaparilla at the Saloon in Columbia when I was in Elementary School & then Old Fashioned candies at Nelson's Candy Kitchen lol. Those were the Good Old Days lol.
Where was that first A&W in Sacramento? The earliest one I remember in Sac was at the corner of 16th & U. It’s now a sort of fast food-drive up burrito/taco stand.
Very cool! I honestly have never heard of Payette. Idaho is a great place. Hopefully all the Californians fleeing to your state haven't ruined things for you.
it aout 5-6 miles from ontario, oregon border to idaho that leads to fruitland,id then like 3-4 miles from there it seems nice town or city people to me friendly oh there house on S,11th st has building look like old gas station has old truck to it cool place
This brought me memories of going to the one in Orange County just remembered it was in Buena Park I remember eating their fries on a plate with like a swirl or looking like a cinnamon roll of fries hope some of u remember what I’m talking about
I don’t know if you still live in Southern California or not. But if you do, there are still two a&w restaurants left. One is in Redlands and the other is all the way past Barstow in yermo
Bottles of A&W Jelly Bellies along with bottles of Jelly Bellies of Dr Pepper, 7Up and Crush @ 5:29 and 7:25. Both Dr Pepper, A&W, 7Up and Crush are own by the same company, Keurig Dr Pepper. They probably would have some merchandises of A&W's sister brands at an A&W restaurant location. Keurig Dr Pepper also owns other root beer brands, IBC, Stewart's Fountain Classics and the possibly no longer existed, Hires.
My mother in law worked at the Lodi A&W in 1942. She was 15 and was a carhop. They invited her to attend the 100 year celebration party.

Loving A&W Root Beer, across the pond in the UK, wish someone could open up a restaurant over here, maybe that someone could be me 😁
here in California we had a A&W restaurant, but I remember in the middle 1960s to early 70s we parked in a parking stall with speakers and they carried out the food on a tray and we ate in the car sort of like a drive-in.its a TOMMYS BURGERS now, but its still there though the area you parked in is now extended out for seating inside.i remember the root beer floats.
My Dad still ask my son when he stops by if he wants Dagwood sandwich 🥪 lol 😂
Really interesting Never A&W was first in Lodi. When I lived in Healdsburg CA we had a Hires Root Beer stand in one part of town. And a A&W stand down by the river. I remember you could the Root Beer spice at the grocery store I think it made by Hires. My grandmother use make homemade Root Beer.
Do you remember the Orange Juice along the highway that were shaped like a orange. We had all kinds of neat things when I was kid
Sure do remember the Mammoth Orange along 99!
Its a 2nd time i ate here at a&w malaysia i enjoy watching your videos while im in here inside the resto.😀☺🌭🍔🍟🍺🍺
Our favorite fast food eatery . Love. A&W. ❤️ Great video
We also like it. Thank you so much for letting us know!
🍺🍔
Cool video
I also Loved your video where you take your Mom and Son to Graceland 😄
You have a Sweet family, thanks for sharing
Sheila C thank you! I had to disable comments on the Elvis trip video because many Elvis lovers were hating on me. I appreciate your sweet comments!

:) an A&W I haven't visited yet. Thanks for posting!
I love A W root beer! I can only get it on holiday in US or Canada but worth the wait! Just had my 1st teen burger with double paddies and had my 1st AW break fast with coffee it blew my head off so strong lol it loved it so much!
Man. I miss A&W. Loved the vlog. When I was little we used to go there. Nothing like a frosty mug of root beer.
Couldn't agree more!
We had an A and W in Pismo Beach , ca when I was growing up. Today it is a Mexican restaurant but you can tell it used to be A and W. They even had car hops on roller skates.
Do you remember the little amusement park and the slot ar across the street?
We will stop by and check it out next time we are in Lodi, thanks guys!
Please do!
My favorite place , ever
love A&W by the way there is a book I found in the library that shows all the eating places and other things and where they originated at
A&W in downtown Modesto,CA. It has been there since the 50's. American graffiti. 2020 still there.
Wallfuls Ça d'y I know. I pass by it every day after work. LOL
I miss that place.I remember always thinking the glass would break on the car window.remember orange Julius
Another great video and wonderful history lesson. Thank you Jeff & Sarah for another fun history lesson. Just some trivia, we have 6 A&W Outlets here in Singapore, including one at the Jewel Terminal at Changi Airport. Well done guys!
You live in the Sinpagore? Interesting! What brought you there?
I thoroughly enjoyed this video great job guys!
A&W root beer is not only creamy, but delicious. You can have it with Kentucky Fried Chicken.Tony has spoken
The Best!
Root Beer fan here! Nice video!
Awesome! Thank you!
I loved this video!
Enjoying the root beer and burger from Japan
Nothing like an Ice cold A&W Root Beer 🍺 Soda 💞
You got that right!
@@jbenziggy 🙌😊

Wow as kido loved go A& W get root beer float Yummy 🤤
I want an anniversary A&W mug!

That was an interesting video, thank you!
Thanks!!!
jeff and sarah i saw your high noon history video, also, that a and w in lodi has a self service root beer tap at the counter , drink all the root beer you want on your visit
That visit turned me onto Diet A&W rootbeer! Thanks for watching!
I drink a lot of the diet root beer. Delicious and refreshing.
back when I was a wee lad the thing to do was go to the a&w drive in and grab a cheeseburger and a root beer in a frosty mug the only way to drink it
My parents owned the A&W that was in Patterson Calif. mid 1970's to early 80's all of us worked there doing jobs for mom. my dad operated his Dodge Dealership down the street where I worked....we lived in Modesto. The building is still there on Highway 33.
growing up in Stockton , I recall going to a very old A&W stand just east of down town . Weber street or Miner st
Your wife is roasting you about the mug !!!
I love A W Root Beer, Your Wife doesn't seem to be very interested in the Collective Mug.😂😂. Our A andW was in with Kentucky Fried Chicken , but it was discontinued. 😷
Not a collector. What can I say? Thanks for watching.
That’s my town, Lodi!
Love A&W. There is an A&W in Indianolia, IA.
I have some baby mugs from them.
Rich White thanks! By the way I pass by that A&W every day on the way home from work! Thanks for being hooked!!!
I've never heard of Birch beer!
i have been to the one in sacramento many many times.it is a long way from nashville.
The burger family was made by my father Bill Swan at international fiberglass along with many other iconic fiberglass statues which are in a short Amazon ebook called "The man behind the mufflerman ".
Very interesting!
He was quite the man he made saddles ,made the dinosaurs in dinosaur park in Alpine California and after he retired he carved out of wood
Will you do an In-N-Out Burger History? 😍🥤🍔🍟
It’s now a sort of fast food-drive up burrito/taco stand.
thank-you for awesome video there a and w here in payette,id has kool stuff from 1950 should come check it out i nthink is cool
Very cool! I honestly have never heard of Payette. Idaho is a great place. Hopefully all the Californians fleeing to your state haven't ruined things for you.
@@jbenziggy
im not sure my first post went out about how far payetteid from ontario,oregon@@jbenziggy

I don’t know if you still live in Southern California or not. But if you do, there are still two a&w restaurants left. One is in Redlands and the other is all the way past Barstow in yermo
Never A&W Root Beer started in Lodi. Been to Lodi many times. Never stopped there.
2:19 Came for the hamburgers stayed for the cats
If there are animals around I'll find them. 😃 Thanks for watching!
