    Thanks for taking the time to upload this. I'm looking at Sprinters and the complex insanity of automatic gear boxes boggles my mind. I'd likely pay another couple thousand $ for a manual.

      Sometimes it takes a few years for the aftermarket to produce a manual for a new model transmission. If you would like to produce service manuals like ATSG or ATRA please let us know at thompsonautotest@yahoo.com. Thanks.

    You seem to be a mountain of knowledge on this transmission.
    I have a question about the 9g tronic. I own a 2015 e class e350 but has developed a slight whine in 3rd gear and higher pitch in 4th. I checked the oil pan and has some aluminium filings in the bottom below the filters. Can you please let me know your thoughts.
    Many kind regards from Ireland 🇮🇪😊

    Why do manufacturers put the electronic control module inside the valve body - instead of wired in to an external module somewhere else in the car? Is it so the transmission fluid can help cool the module? Or maybe so that the electrical paths are as short as possible to reduce shift time?

      If we can compare this unit with the 7G-Tronic, which was introduced in 2004, and suffered several complaints "Defective valve body or the conductor plate are usually the cause for these problems."
      www.mercedesmedic.com/722-9-7g-tronic-automatic-transmission-problems-solutions/
      We get our fair share of 722.9 7G-Tronic units for rebuild where some are damage to the point of a non-rebuild-able core. We have yet to get a 9G-Tronic unit into the shop, as most of our customers are driving vehicles out of warranty with greater than 100,000 miles.

    • @SDav21
      @SDav21 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that the 9g tronic is more reliable and simpler than the 7g tronic. I've seen a tech on Instagram that posts and said they rarely see 9g tronics coming in for issues. 9g tronic is a nice transmissions. Shifts are quick and smooth. Much more than the 7g tronic. Apparently the 7g tronic had a weird way of shifting between the gears whereas 9g tronic is more "direct". Not sure what is meant by that but I read it somewhere.

      Nah, change the fluid and filters around 20k and 30k miles thereafter...
      Otherwise you’re likely to see a 100,000m or as Mercedes would like to infer, it’s a sealed for life gearbox...

    In your opinion, does the 2 additional gears make this a better transmission than the outgoing 7G or is it simply marketing?

    • @ThompsonAutoTest
      @ThompsonAutoTest  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      "The fuel economy advantage of the 9G-TRONIC is in average 6.5 % in the NEDC.The 9G-TRONIC in comparison to the 7G-TRONIC. The main advantage can be seen in the velocity range from 40 km/h to 100 km/h, where the low engine speed is still possible, due to high number of gears and the high ratio spread. Especially under customer driving conditions significant fuel economy improvements are possible."
      This statement is quoted from the Mercedes service and sales documents. The 9 gear ratios are close and the system can skip gears when shifting. The shifts are very quick and almost imperceptible. Time will tell about the success of the 9G-Tronic but the 7G-Tronic is still used in many 2019 models.

    • @986C
      @986C 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thompson AutoTest Thanks for the detailed reply. That’s very interesting on the fuel economy. I purchased as 2018 C63 S AMG and I have found the 7 speed transmission to be flawless. It provided very fast and smooth shifts. I’ve never said to myself ‘ if I only had two more gears I’d be happy’. The fuel economy on this car is atrocious so I am not sure 6.5% would be perceptible but every bit helps. Excellent video sir. I can tell you have know your stuff.

      @@986C The C63 7g tronic is a little different to the normal 7g tronic however. The C63 has a multi plate wet start up clutch instead of a torque converter. It allows for less pumping losses and more direct path between the engine and gearbox while still maintaining the smoothness of a normal torque converter one. So it is basically a torque converter transmission without the torque converter and in its place, some wet start up clutches. I've always felt that the 7g tronic shifts can be jerky at times. The 5g tronic was slow but smooth. The 9g tronic shifts quickly AND is very smooth.

    Great knowledge and truly appreciated 👏 by chance could you make a video of removing the TCM from the valve body. I am currently dealing with my 9g having issues shifting from P To D. Everything im reading is leading me to believe I need a new TCM, but Mercedes dealer is telling me I need a new transmission. And will the tcm need a re -learn after being installed?

    • @MoesKeckeEcke
      @MoesKeckeEcke 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The TCM is coded to the car that's why if you buy rebuild gearbox the firm needs the original trans first to move the valve body with electronics over to the "refurbished" gearbox...
      Only Mercedes can reprogramm the gearbox for you so you are out of luck 😂

    How often to change the transmission oil for 9G tronic?

    • @ThompsonAutoTest
      @ThompsonAutoTest  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mercedes may recommend service intervals but after 100,000 miles it would be a good idea to change the pan filter assembly and fluid at least in the pan.
      The 9G-Tronic seems to be holding up quite well and no major problems so far.
