Ya'll should get a Sega Genesis. I got one a few years ago. Didn't cost me much, and the games aren't too expensive. I love it. The Genesis is in the running for my most played console.
1.) We don’t want to be tracked. 2.) We don’t want micro transactions. 3.) We don’t want to be online 100% (tracked & exploited). 4.) We don’t want to be nerfed. 5.) We don’t want overly complicated games that at the end of the day are not fun. 6.) We want physics things that we own. Control is key. Don’t act like it isn’t.

@@Anonymous_Whisper It's true. A lot of newer games try to be super realistic and relatable to the player, but you play some older games and they have no interest in being "realistic." When Mario, Sonic or Pokemon, some of the biggest names in the industry, were being created, the developers weren't in the board room thinking "let's make it realistic!" No, they were thinking "how can we make a cool world that people will love, regardless if it makes sense or not?" And now these names are in the history books, everybody knows these franchises.
Another thing is that game companies became greedy and no longer sell you the complete game. Back then you bought a game and it was 100% complete. They are so focused developing content over and over for a game that’s been out instead of actually coming up with new ideas. They don’t release games like they use to. They just milk them
You're misleading a bit, between the nintendo hotline, misleading guides (Final fantasy tactics prima does not hold a candle to the ff fandom job tips or my vids in a playlist) and anti-rental difficulty. But yeah there is some truth to what you said since I hate when games don't transfer from ps4 to ps5, or paying a switch tax and risk their code in box bs. Still, I am happy to get skygunner on ps plus on sale due to a price hike than pay $80+ for a rental. Tetris forever will be a great compilation too, as it can't possibly be censored.
Not always, Christmas always saw some games being "rushjobs" and there were no patches to fix issues on the console side. Gaming magazines back then would warn gamers about this in their Christmas issues.

Bottom line… Don’t ever get rid of the games you had during your childhood. I never sold,traded nor lent any of my games I had as a kid. In my house we had strict rules and I am currently 31 and I still own my entire collection. Nearly 28 years of playing and collecting and I can honestly say it makes me the happiest person on this planet! ❤
When I was a teen in the 90s I sold my NES and games to my sisters boyfriend for $25 and regretted it. Amazingly a few years later I found an NES complete in box plus 6 games that someone put on the curb for the trash. I still have that one.

That's why people bullied that teenager in January for "beating Tetris", even that BBC reporter bullied him. Older folks don't understand videogames, and like any older group of people, they hate it because they don't get it.
@@Quigon-93that means cheaper copies have been bought on ebay prior by game stores. Many stores do that and some try to flip on Amazon to uniformed blind consumers. It's still sitting there because the price is just high enough to stay up until someone careless or desperate enough wants it badly. It's a sad trend but people are competing for top dollar on what some may have had for years or are selling dirt cheap at thrift stores, yard sales, goodwills, etc.
That’s the really nice thing about the Switch: it’s the one platform of the current era that allows exactly that, and it’s why 90% of my library on it is physical games. No possible way to have them taken away from me no matter what any companies do with the digital store fronts.
@@Swampert384 To be honest and I am 44 year old dad of an 8 year old son and I had to buy the new Contra game ( Galuga) and Grid Auto Sport from Nintendo's digital store as those 2 games were not released on cartridges. Every other game I bought for my son is on a cartridge including the Mario and Sonic games.
Not exactly, physical media has a shelf life, I heard that around 2040, all PS1 games will stop working, even if the owners took care of them. Even the classic ROM cartridges that are very sturdy, will someday stop working. At this point, buying games on Steam is more future-proof than buying those modern Blu-Rays made with cheap plastic.
I love hearing people that grew up around the 70's-90's talk about gaming, I collect retro games too but I am only 23 so I don't have any nostalgia for the Atari, NES, Snes, etc.... to me it's like a time machine, experiencing the games how people back then experienced them and also of course, because the games are so good and were actually made with care unlike a lot of games now. Hardware limitations promoted creativity which is why a lot of people think retro games are so much better.
It’s really nice to see someone like me think this way! I’m 26, and although my first console was a Sega Genesis, I didn’t have any context for most retro systems and their releases. Now as an adult, I’ve become passionate about all the older systems I was born too late to experience in their prime, and the history behind them! So much love was put into making them great in their own ways, and like you said, making the best product they could with all the technological limitations in mind was impressive and led to amazing innovations. Love retro games so much :)
38, it was wild seeing it change over the years. We were poor so atari is what i started with. Then nintendo, turbographix 16, then dos based computer stuff. genisis and on and on. new games are actually just too damn confusing these days!

I'm 25, I think the only reason why I love NES games is because of my dad who was born 1978 + its something about the quality/color of these games. One day I plan on getting games for NES, snes, N64, GameCube, and more for the DS. Currently just on ps5.

They sat in his garage for last 5 years lol I was asking around at work about Trinitrons and BAM! He even delivered to my house, I did give him $60, a deal for both of us .

Fantastic! Old is gold because the way forwards it backwards. Old games were sold complete with no micro transactions and you actually owned a physical copy of the game. I still play my Sega Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, N64, PS1,2,3 along side my Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. With my Analogue Pocket all my old portable games look better than ever AND I was able to introduce all this to my daughter. The more greedy modern game developers become the more popular retro gaming will be.
Newer games are online services that can be discontinued at anytime, becomes faulty after software updates, newer games being released unfinished and gamers being treated like beta testers.

This is an important movement. The access to emulation, retroid handhelds, and retro-mini-consoles are allowing OG gamers to relive their childhood and allowing the new generation to experience the past for a better understanding and appreciation of how the gaming industry got here today. Also, it's handheld gaming devices that are making a surge comeback, and new indie game developers that are making pixel-art retro-style games with a modern twist.

Let's hope you're right about the Zelda Echos Of Wisdom!! I'm literally almost giving up on Zelda!! Twilight Princess is a good game but not my personal go to when it comes too Zelda!! Was strongly disappointed in Phantom Hourglass as well as Spirit Tracks!! While I found Skyward Sword and Link Between Worlds to be fun Triforce Heros wasn't all that!! Was disappointed in Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom!! So I hope you're right about the Echos Of Wisdom otherwise I'm giving up on Zelda!!
No microtransactions, no day 1 patches, no FOMO battle passes, no 1TB bloatwares, no downloading viruses, no digital currency, no mandatory internet connection just to keep the game running. Just fully released games. At a discount. It's great.
My brother just got laid off from Bungie after working there for a decade. His explination of the gaming industry today goes a bit like this: Game companies decided awhile ago that they need to compete with hollywood for graphics. That means that their budgets for graphic designers and everything else that goes with that skyrocketed. Also, now that every game is played online, server management teams have to be on payroll for as long as the game is online. The only way gaming studios can keep up with these costs is to do shady crap like incomplete games with full priced DLCs, loot boxes, paid skins, and pay-to-win features. Basically, the things that have made modern gaming insufferable are here to stay.
Thank you for pointing that out many people have said this is the reason why alot of people quit playing call of duty. When mw2 2022 was out I kinda figured how did they not overhaul the game or did something and I assumed it was the paid DLC skins etc that made them enough money to ignore the hate and players quit playing mw2 2022
It's amazing how games on the NES hold up so well. So much so, that young kids enjoy them. It goes to show that sometimes simple gameplay mechanics and maybe a little charm is all you need.
Turned 45 this year and I've never stopped playing those retro classics! So many great memories of playing the Atari 2600 and NES back in the day. Not at all surprised people are turning to older games in place of newer ones. The economy isnt so great, and people get tired of paying $60 for another broken, incomplete AAA Game. While some older games are pricey, there's still many are that super cheap. A lot of the classic PS2 and original XBOX games hover around the $10 to $15 mark used.
@@TISUAL That's great to hear the younger generation is taking interest in these classic games too. It was consoles like the NES and Sega Genesis proved it wasn;t graphics that made a game great, but rather how they played and how effective the control scheme was that really mattered. I actually did a review of the classic racing game Rad Racer recently. It was a very popular game on the NES, and also found its way into arcades as well.
I think it's not just Nostalgia it's because they are the games you can pick up and can have fun for that day or when you have time. You don't have to spend weeks trying to figure out the game and the 8/10 buttons. As an adult when ever I get the video game itch, it's always a Sports game for me.

Can't really blame them. Modern Triple A games have gotten way too corporate in terms of what uber common trends that these executives would think make a game a best sellar. That's why you see so many mediocre live service games that rip off shooters like Fortnite and Overwatch, and there's also your basic 3rd person cinematic action adventure game that's basically a derivative of other games in that same genre (mostly modern games from Sony like The Last of Us, God of War in the Norse Mythology, the Horizon series, etc...). Also, because of modern games extremely pushing graphics engines to make games look uber realistic (real time raytracing, detailed textures, etc...), it's causing major opitimization issues for the consoles and gaming PC's it was programmed for.
Super Mario Bros. sold so well that the game is dirt cheap now because of how many copies are floating around stores. I've seen one guy make a coffee table out of them. It's like that now with PS4 and XBOX One. There's games for them that are under ten bucks.
Can't say otherwise; retro gaming is like the holy grail compared to now, and that's why I dropped out of gaming since I turned 30 several years ago, I embrace retro!

Even though I’m a Gen Z’er (born in 2000) whose first experience in gaming was during the 6th Generation, playing remastered/emulated ports of games from the 6th/7th Generation again made me realize that the passion of truly making high quality games feel unique and for the most part fun is gone the minute game companies increasingly went corporate by the late 8th Generation and onward just to have a safe bet of making money 😭😭😭. Indies and Double A games (and honestly, Nintendo’s 1st party stuff) are the only genre of modern games that are truly well crafted because they do use classic tropes of retro games, but make a unique spin on them that are pretty innovative for the consumer.
I keep telling people that graphics don't matter if the game runs like crap and isn't even fun. It's just a beautiful piece of garbage, like those dumb pieces of "art" that are set up in public spaces that our tax money goes to. Performance and gameplay should always be the first priority when making a game while graphics should be the last.
I'm currently 22, and I've grown up with retro games, desiring them when I was a young kid. Starting from the V-Smile, Leapfrog, and then some Plug in and Play TV games (Namco's Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Dig-Dug, Bosconian, New Rally X, and Spongebob's Fry Cook Games), PS2, and other Tiger Electronic-like handhelds from Walmart and Target, I grew to love the classic consoles like Sega Genesis and SNES, starting with the Genesis version of Toy Story, and Mickey Mania. I remember watching playthroughs of Toy Story online, enjoying it, especially Sid's levels, as I was a fan of the movie, and of Sid, trying to make my room like his, listening to rock, and engaging in some similar habits with toys and maybe a bit of fire, hehe! Anyways, from that point on, I started playing online emulators for mainly Sega Genesis, SNES, GBA, and coin-op arcade games, owning an AtGames Genesis, and Atari Flashback console with several games installed I grew to love. Watching some of AVGN's videos played a big role in my knowledge and enjoyment of retro games, still playing some of these games to this very day.
Nah, new games have always been expensive at release. The difference is that your $50-60 PS2/Xbox/GameCube game was complete with no expectation of spending extra to get the ending or power ups.
Inflation wise games have never been cheaper. I remember paying 99$ plus tax for perfect dark in 2000. My boxed copy of final fantasy 1 still has the 60$ price tag on it. Even watch an old episode of the simpsons where bart shoplifts , its because marge saaid games were 80 dollars and therefore to expensive

I got into collecting when I seen ads in video game magazines with fanzines people were putting out collecting Atari games. That was in mid 90s so I jumped back into it. Its been a thing for last 10 years. Cant touch a NES at a garage sale less than $100 anymore.

Retro gaming has been hot. Never lost heat 🔥🔥🔥. Has way more variety in games and not to mention that the games are actually complete, unlocking content within the game in classic consoles make the classics replayble and memorable. Arcade machines will never die for me.
I appreciate these reporters didn't trash on the hobby, so many people do just because their too old to understand it, but these people get it. I collect retro games myself, buy 'em usually at stores or on eBay, and play 'em. I didn't even really grow up with older games and such, I'm still pretty young, I just think older games are still great experiences regardless of age. What a lot of people think is that because it's older, it's automatically bad, and it's sad that people carry that opinion because it couldn't be further from the truth. I like more older games than I do newer games, we can thank those 20, 30 and 40 year old games for the brands we love today. We wouldn't have any Super Mario's, Sonic the Hedgehog's, Tomb Raider's, Metal Gear Solid's, or others today without those first releases back in the 80s and 90s. These games were critically acclaimed, sure they may look dated, but that's life, people look dated when their old, we don't hate our seniors though, because even in their age their still great people, like how in a videogames age, it's still a good game. People don't bat an eye when someone watches an old movie, but people should do the same with old videogames.
Naw. Retro games have been hot for several years now. When your local news picks up on something, it means its been a thing for a while. A lot of retro stuff has peaked in price. It might go up a bit more but it would mean your auntie would have to jump on Smash Bros and Mario Party 😅

That game had a ridiculous amount of content for a gameboy game. Blew me away when I first played 1998. This game was long and very well optimized too. Most gameboy game had short playthroughs. This game burned through a lot of batteries.
Bc people are sick of the greediness of modern developers Microtransactions, loot boxes I want to put a disc in & have a complete experience right there & not rely on being online all the time
Also some retro games are easier to stop and play. Sometimes we don't have enough time for a campaign and simply want tried and true fun in small pockets of "me" time
It's going back down for NES prices. Might take a few more years for it to stabilize. The next nostalgic generation moved onto gen 5 and gen 6 consoles. Gen 7 too because of the whole Gen Z thing with being nostalgic for consoles from their childhoods. I expect Wii games to become valuable, even shovelware. lol
You should of seen the NES systems I seen a yard sale few weeks back. They were discolored brown in color.... he wanted $120 for 1 and $150 for other with track pad. I would gave him $20 maybe.
The whole era was hot. Multiplayer was local, word-of-mouth and magazines were the main source of tips and codes, stores sold new games that were *actually* new (sealed), and you only had to pay once for a complete game.

It’s that simple, for $70 you’re getting half a game with no passion and creativity. You then have to buy the season pass which is basically the other half of the game but even then most of the time it doesn’t even include all the dlc to begin with. Internet requirements for solo gameplay, potential political agendas, too many glitches and bugs (I’m not buying the whole early beta access pre order bonus. I’m not paying you to test the game myself. That’s your job), and other microtransactions. With retro games there’s no internet required, secondhand used consoles are not that much more than most new games today, no political agendas, games that are actually complete with little glitches, more passion and creativity, no dlc and microtransactions, and a prioritization of fun and the overall experience with most games.
Today's games are focused on investors and not in real gamers. Games are made to squeeze out your pocket as much they can and to fill their pockets, there is no passion and no liberty just following guides and thats why so many legends from the industry are living this big AAA companies and want to start their own studio. Gaiming has been hijacked.
There's billions involved in gaming annually, leave it to the already wealthy to further bleed dry any last medium they get their hands on... mobile gaming and in app purchasing from whales with zero self control showed what script to follow in terms of monetizing their games going forward, gaming is pretty much dead if we're talking mainstream going forward.

Not around my area. Usually their cheaper than online, and if they aren't it isn't really their fault. Game collecting is still a niche, these stores need money and a heavy inventory to survive, if they can't afford to keep the business open, then obviously it's gonna close down. Usually eBay is way worse because the seller has to total in eBay's cut of the money, the price of shipping, try to make a profit off of how much they payed for the game, and sometimes deal with export tax and duties and such.
I’ve been getting my nieces and nephews into old school gaming and took them to a local barcade recently. They ended up having a blast when they realized they could win prizes for playing certain games and I plan on taking them back hopefully soon!
Most modern AAA (NOTICE I MENTION AAA, NOT GARBAGE INDIE GRAPHICS) games are not built because there is an artist excited to get their idea out. Back then many big AAA games had good artistic original ideas and the full game was included for the price. You got your money's worth. Now NEARLY (not all) all games are built by a $10 billion corporation with addictive, gambling, DLC and micro transactions as the core of the "game". The rest of the game is the afterthought. They just think "how can we get low IQ subhumans to buy our games and get addicted to the grind?" instead of a fun artistic vision of a creative artist as the core of the game. I hate how every game has 500 weapons and each weapon has 20 paths to upgrade. STOP IT, make the game have 10 weapons and everyone expereicnces the same game, not "you have to upgrade, customize and level up every single item in the game" I want the developer to pick that for me, like a movie, I don't want to make the choices in a movie, I want to experience the artists choice not my imagination.
@Trendleader863 I've got about 3,000 roms just on my phone, throw in a 40 buck ipega controller and boom 250 bucks for a handheld that plays ps2. I've been meaning to mod my old wii those things work great.

Ever since I lost a good friend of mine, who was a retro gaming fiend, I kept his classic collection to keep his legacy. I now have every console of the sixth generation.
And emulation has so way more features. Fast forward, rewinding, save states, cheating, and best of all: debugging tools that let you examine and modify game code. Play on any device you want with the controller you want. More choice, more power. Original hardware is quite retarded.

This so called retro games you speak of never went away. I've always kept my old game consoles, cartridges, & discs from the late 70's to my PS5 games & console in great working condition. These old cartridges & CD, DVD, Blu-Ray still look brand new. And I'm never getting rid of any of them.
I'm a nostalgic adult and a retro video gamer, meaning I like to play video games from older consoles. However, I do like many of the compilations of older games on newer consoles like the Switch, because not only do you get so many classic games in one compilation, you also get new features like rewinding and save states. I have many compilations of older games on the switch; Disney Classic Games Collection, Humongous Classic Collection, Pac-Man Museum+, Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked, Sega Genesis Classics, Sonic Origins Plus, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.
It's full games with coop, no dlc, not always online, no drm, and you own them.

When Mario, Sonic or Pokemon, some of the biggest names in the industry, were being created, the developers weren't in the board room thinking "let's make it realistic!" No, they were thinking "how can we make a cool world that people will love, regardless if it makes sense or not?" And now these names are in the history books, everybody knows these franchises.

Another thing is that game companies became greedy and no longer sell you the complete game. Back then you bought a game and it was 100% complete. They are so focused developing content over and over for a game that’s been out instead of actually coming up with new ideas. They don’t release games like they use to. They just milk them
You're misleading a bit, between the nintendo hotline, misleading guides (Final fantasy tactics prima does not hold a candle to the ff fandom job tips or my vids in a playlist) and anti-rental difficulty. But yeah there is some truth to what you said since I hate when games don't transfer from ps4 to ps5, or paying a switch tax and risk their code in box bs.
Still, I am happy to get skygunner on ps plus on sale due to a price hike than pay $80+ for a rental. Tetris forever will be a great compilation too, as it can't possibly be censored.
This might have first started with Sonic and Knuckles where you could connect the cartridges together to add Knuckles into the game.
Not always, Christmas always saw some games being "rushjobs" and there were no patches to fix issues on the console side. Gaming magazines back then would warn gamers about this in their Christmas issues.
These newer games you have to buy dlcs to play the complete game but not with your NES, Atari, Sega Genesis and other classic games

I never sold,traded nor lent any of my games I had as a kid. In my house we had strict rules and I am currently 31 and I still own my entire collection. Nearly 28 years of playing and collecting and I can honestly say it makes me the happiest person on this planet! ❤

When I was a teen in the 90s I sold my NES and games to my sisters boyfriend for $25 and regretted it. Amazingly a few years later I found an NES complete in box plus 6 games that someone put on the curb for the trash. I still have that one.

That's why people bullied that teenager in January for "beating Tetris", even that BBC reporter bullied him. That’s the really nice thing about the Switch: it’s the one platform of the current era that allows exactly that, and it’s why 90% of my library on it is physical games. No possible way to have them taken away from me no matter what any companies do with the digital store fronts.

Every other game I bought for my son is on a cartridge including the Mario and Sonic games.
Not exactly, physical media has a shelf life, I heard that around 2040, all PS1 games will stop working, even if the owners took care of them.
Even the classic ROM cartridges that are very sturdy, will someday stop working.
At this point, buying games on Steam is more future-proof than buying those modern Blu-Rays made with cheap plastic.
I love hearing people that grew up around the 70's-90's talk about gaming, I collect retro games too but I am only 23 so I don't have any nostalgia for the Atari, NES, Snes, etc.... to me it's like a time machine, experiencing the games how people back then experienced them and also of course, because the games are so good and were actually made with care unlike a lot of games now. Hardware limitations promoted creativity which is why a lot of people think retro games are so much better.
It’s really nice to see someone like me think this way! I’m 26, and although my first console was a Sega Genesis, I didn’t have any context for most retro systems and their releases. Now as an adult, I’ve become passionate about all the older systems I was born too late to experience in their prime, and the history behind them! So much love was put into making them great in their own ways, and like you said, making the best product they could with all the technological limitations in mind was impressive and led to amazing innovations. Love retro games so much :)

Fantastic! Old is gold because the way forwards it backwards. Old games were sold complete with no micro transactions and you actually owned a physical copy of the game. I still play my Sega Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, N64, PS1,2,3 along side my Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. With my Analogue Pocket all my old portable games look better than ever AND I was able to introduce all this to my daughter. The more greedy modern game developers become the more popular retro gaming will be.
Newer games are online services that can be discontinued at anytime, becomes faulty after software updates, newer games being released unfinished and gamers being treated like beta testers.

The access to emulation, retroid handhelds, and retro-mini-consoles are allowing OG gamers to relive their childhood and allowing the new generation to experience the past for a better understanding and appreciation of how the gaming industry got here today. Also, it's handheld gaming devices that are making a surge comeback, and new indie game developers that are making pixel-art retro-style games with a modern twist.

Was strongly disappointed in Phantom Hourglass as well as Spirit Tracks!! While I found Skyward Sword and Link Between Worlds to be fun Triforce Heros wasn't all that!! Was disappointed in Breath Of The Wild and Tears Of The Kingdom!! So I hope you're right about the Echos Of Wisdom otherwise I'm giving up on Zelda!!

My brother just got laid off from Bungie after working there for a decade. His explination of the gaming industry today goes a bit like this:
Game companies decided awhile ago that they need to compete with hollywood for graphics. That means that their budgets for graphic designers and everything else that goes with that skyrocketed.
Also, now that every game is played online, server management teams have to be on payroll for as long as the game is online.
The only way gaming studios can keep up with these costs is to do shady crap like incomplete games with full priced DLCs, loot boxes, paid skins, and pay-to-win features.
Basically, the things that have made modern gaming insufferable are here to stay.

When mw2 2022 was out I kinda figured how did they not overhaul the game or did something and I assumed it was the paid DLC skins etc that made them enough money to ignore the hate and players quit playing mw2 2022
It's amazing how games on the NES hold up so well. So much so, that young kids enjoy them. It goes to show that sometimes simple gameplay mechanics and maybe a little charm is all you need.

Turned 45 this year and I've never stopped playing those retro classics! So many great memories of playing the Atari 2600 and NES back in the day. Not at all surprised people are turning to older games in place of newer ones. The economy isnt so great, and people get tired of paying $60 for another broken, incomplete AAA Game. While some older games are pricey, there's still many are that super cheap. A lot of the classic PS2 and original XBOX games hover around the $10 to $15 mark used.

@@TISUAL That's great to hear the younger generation is taking interest in these classic games too. It was consoles like the NES and Sega Genesis proved it wasn;t graphics that made a game great, but rather how they played and how effective the control scheme was that really mattered.
I actually did a review of the classic racing game Rad Racer recently. It was a very popular game on the NES, and also found its way into arcades as well.

I think it's not just Nostalgia it's because they are the games you can pick up and can have fun for that day or when you have time. You don't have to spend weeks trying to figure out the game and the 8/10 buttons.

Can't really blame them. Modern Triple A games have gotten way too corporate in terms of what uber common trends that these executives would think make a game a best sellar. That's why you see so many mediocre live service games that rip off shooters like Fortnite and Overwatch, and there's also your basic 3rd person cinematic action adventure game that's basically a derivative of other games in that same genre (mostly modern games from Sony like The Last of Us, God of War in the Norse Mythology, the Horizon series, etc...). Also, because of modern games extremely pushing graphics engines to make games look uber realistic (real time raytracing, detailed textures, etc...), it's causing major opitimization issues for the consoles and gaming PC's it was programmed for.
Super Mario Bros. sold so well that the game is dirt cheap now because of how many copies are floating around stores. I've seen one guy make a coffee table out of them. It's like that now with PS4 and XBOX One. There's games for them that are under ten bucks.
Can't say otherwise; retro gaming is like the holy grail compared to now, and that's why I dropped out of gaming since I turned 30 several years ago, I embrace retro!

Even though I’m a Gen Z’er (born in 2000) whose first experience in gaming was during the 6th Generation, playing remastered/emulated ports of games from the 6th/7th Generation again made me realize that the passion of truly making high quality games feel unique and for the most part fun is gone the minute game companies increasingly went corporate by the late 8th Generation and onward just to have a safe bet of making money 😭😭😭. Indies and Double A games (and honestly, Nintendo’s 1st party stuff) are the only genre of modern games that are truly well crafted because they do use classic tropes of retro games, but make a unique spin on them that are pretty innovative for the consumer.

I keep telling people that graphics don't matter if the game runs like crap and isn't even fun. It's just a beautiful piece of garbage, like those dumb pieces of "art" that are set up in public spaces that our tax money goes to. Performance and gameplay should always be the first priority when making a game while graphics should be the last.

I'm currently 22, and I've grown up with retro games, desiring them when I was a young kid. Starting from the V-Smile, Leapfrog, and then some Plug in and Play TV games (Namco's Pac-Man, Pac & Pal, Super Pac-Man, Pac-Man Plus, Dig-Dug, Bosconian, New Rally X, and Spongebob's Fry Cook Games), PS2, and other Tiger Electronic-like handhelds from Walmart and Target, I grew to love the classic consoles like Sega Genesis and SNES, starting with the Genesis version of Toy Story, and Mickey Mania. I remember watching playthroughs of Toy Story online, enjoying it, especially Sid's levels, as I was a fan of the movie, and of Sid, trying to make my room like his, listening to rock, and engaging in some similar habits with toys and maybe a bit of fire, hehe! Anyways, from that point on, I started playing online emulators for mainly Sega Genesis, SNES, GBA, and coin-op arcade games, owning an AtGames Genesis, and Atari Flashback console with several games installed I grew to love. Watching some of AVGN's videos played a big role in my knowledge and enjoyment of retro games, still playing some of these games to this very day.

Nah, new games have always been expensive at release. The difference is that your $50-60 PS2/Xbox/GameCube game was complete with no expectation of spending extra to get the ending or power ups.
Inflation wise games have never been cheaper. I remember paying 99$ plus tax for perfect dark in 2000. My boxed copy of final fantasy 1 still has the 60$ price tag on it. I appreciate these reporters didn't trash on the hobby, so many people do just because their too old to understand it, but these people get it. I collect retro games myself, buy 'em usually at stores or on eBay, and play 'em. I didn't even really grow up with older games and such, I'm still pretty young, I just think older games are still great experiences regardless of age. What a lot of people think is that because it's older, it's automatically bad, and it's sad that people carry that opinion because it couldn't be further from the truth. I like more older games than I do newer games, we can thank those 20, 30 and 40 year old games for the brands we love today. We wouldn't have any Super Mario's, Sonic the Hedgehog's, Tomb Raider's, Metal Gear Solid's, or others today without those first releases back in the 80s and 90s. These games were critically acclaimed, sure they may look dated, but that's life, people look dated when their old, we don't hate our seniors though, because even in their age their still great people, like how in a videogames age, it's still a good game. People don't bat an eye when someone watches an old movie, but people should do the same with old videogames.

Beat Pokemon FireRed last year, 6/10 game
That game had a ridiculous amount of content for a gameboy game. Blew me away when I first played 1998. This game was long and very well optimized too. Most gameboy game had short playthroughs. This game burned through a lot of batteries.

Gen X here. 8 bit never gets old. I was able to recently get both the NES and SNES classic consoles.
8-bit was only the NES and Master System, SNES is 16-bit.

It's going back down for NES prices. Might take a few more years for it to stabilize. The next nostalgic generation moved onto gen 5 and gen 6 consoles. Gen 7 too because of the whole Gen Z thing with being nostalgic for consoles from their childhoods. I expect Wii games to become valuable, even shovelware. lol

You should of seen the NES systems I seen a yard sale few weeks back. They were discolored brown in color.... he wanted $120 for 1 and $150 for other with track pad. I would gave him $20 maybe.

Most New Games: Broken on release, E-Shop, Microtransactions, Pay to win, DEI, designed to suck as much money out of you as possible.
Old Games: Fun.
The whole era was hot. Multiplayer was local, word-of-mouth and magazines were the main source of tips and codes, stores sold new games that were *actually* new (sealed), and you only had to pay once for a complete game.

It’s that simple, for $70 you’re getting half a game with no passion and creativity. You then have to buy the season pass which is basically the other half of the game but even then most of the time it doesn’t even include all the dlc to begin with. Internet requirements for solo gameplay, potential political agendas, too many glitches and bugs (I’m not buying the whole early beta access pre order bonus. I’m not paying you to test the game myself. That’s your job), and other microtransactions.
With retro games there’s no internet required, secondhand used consoles are not that much more than most new games today, no political agendas, games that are actually complete with little glitches, more passion and creativity, no dlc and microtransactions, and a prioritization of fun and the overall experience with most games.
Today's games are focused on investors and not in real gamers. Games are made to squeeze out your pocket as much they can and to fill their pockets, there is no passion and no liberty just following guides and thats why so many legends from the industry are living this big AAA companies and want to start their own studio. Gaiming has been hijacked.

There's billions involved in gaming annually, leave it to the already wealthy to further bleed dry any last medium they get their hands on... mobile gaming and in app purchasing from whales with zero self control showed what script to follow in terms of monetizing their games going forward, gaming is pretty much dead if we're talking mainstream going forward.

Not around my area. Usually their cheaper than online, and if they aren't it isn't really their fault. Game collecting is still a niche, these stores need money and a heavy inventory to survive, if they can't afford to keep the business open, then obviously it's gonna close down. Usually eBay is way worse because the seller has to total in eBay's cut of the money, the price of shipping, try to make a profit off of how much they payed for the game, and sometimes deal with export tax and duties and such.
I’ve been getting my nieces and nephews into old school gaming and took them to a local barcade recently. They ended up having a blast when they realized they could win prizes for playing certain games and I plan on taking them back hopefully soon!

Most modern AAA (NOTICE I MENTION AAA, NOT GARBAGE INDIE GRAPHICS) games are not built because there is an artist excited to get their idea out. Back then many big AAA games had good artistic original ideas and the full game was included for the price. You got your money's worth. Now NEARLY (not all) all games are built by a $10 billion corporation with addictive, gambling, DLC and micro transactions as the core of the "game". The rest of the game is the afterthought. They just think "how can we get low IQ subhumans to buy our games and get addicted to the grind?" instead of a fun artistic vision of a creative artist as the core of the game. I hate how every game has 500 weapons and each weapon has 20 paths to upgrade. STOP IT, make the game have 10 weapons and everyone expereicnces the same game, not "you have to upgrade, customize and level up every single item in the game" I want the developer to pick that for me, like a movie, I don't want to make the choices in a movie, I want to experience the artists choice not my imagination.
As someone who makes a living reselling, retro gaming is NOT hot again. It's at a low baseline right now as prices have become too high.

Cheap? It's free. I have every SNES, PS1, PS2 game with covers and all and didn't pay a dime. And they play way better on emulator in 4k

@Trendleader863 I've got about 3,000 roms just on my phone, throw in a 40 buck ipega controller and boom 250 bucks for a handheld that plays ps2. I've been meaning to mod my old wii those things work great.

Ever since I lost a good friend of mine, who was a retro gaming fiend, I kept his classic collection to keep his legacy. I now have every console of the sixth generation.

I own a videogame store in Houston and yes the retro stuff sells more for me than the newer stuff.
I downloaded an emulator and a bunch of game files. No need for hooking up physical media unless you need the ritual.
The novelty isn't really there when you play them emulated on a PC.

And emulation has so way more features. Fast forward, rewinding, save states, cheating, and best of all: debugging tools that let you examine and modify game code. Play on any device you want with the controller you want. More choice, more power. Original hardware is quite retarded.

This so called retro games you speak of never went away. I've always kept my old game consoles, cartridges, & discs from the late 70's to my PS5 games & console in great working condition. These old cartridges & CD, DVD, Blu-Ray still look brand new. And I'm never getting rid of any of them.

I'm a nostalgic adult and a retro video gamer, meaning I like to play video games from older consoles. However, I do like many of the compilations of older games on newer consoles like the Switch, because not only do you get so many classic games in one compilation, you also get new features like rewinding and save states. I have many compilations of older games on the switch; Disney Classic Games Collection, Humongous Classic Collection, Pac-Man Museum+, Rocket Knight Adventures: Re-Sparked, Sega Genesis Classics, Sonic Origins Plus, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection.
