he became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing the high ground, which eventually, he did. unfortunately he taught his apprentice everything he knew, and his apprentice took the high ground from him in his sleep. it's ironic. he could give the high ground to others, but not keep it for himself.

      Arrogance comes in levels, obviously
Anakin’s arrogance just had a tendency to climb up levels where as even Palpatine had grounded expectations (usually).
So Vader lost because he was tired, angry, overconfident and by the end of the ‘High Ground’, he just was probably tired of Soresu as a concept. After all, say what you want about Obi Wan, he was the master of Soresu. He has fought multiple opponents and his fluid blocks and parries.
It just is like the Kryptonite against Djem So.
Obi Wan won because of lightsaber mastery, patience and having the perfect personality to counter it.
Saying he was arrogant and why he won because of that is too simplistic of an answer. It is like answering an math problem without showing your work.

    • @Aeluron
      @Aeluron 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In fairness he was already angry clouding judgement, also helps that Obi-Wan knows Anakin's moves well enough. Training someone long enough makes you know how they move and act. Similarly in a way a Parent knows how their kid acts after raising them for so long.

I'm not sure why it's overlooked that telling him not to "try it" would be the single best way to ensure that he does ... something that Obi Wan would have known about his protege. At that point, he had given up on trying to "save" him, and set out to ensure that he was killed. Goading an egomaniac into trying something they shouldn't, would be a perfect way to ensure victory over a superior opponent.

mariocastillo813 Wasn't the high ground Anakin couldve easily just jumped in front of Obi than above him. He was just blinded by arrogance and pride and tried the same move Obi used on maul only difference is unlike maul Obi wasnt blinded by Arrogance and saw it coming from a mile away. Why do you think he tells Anakin "Dont try it." because he knew saying that Anakin WOULD be dumb enough to try it. If he had just been patient and kept the pressure on Kenobi then he wouldve easily won but as is the way of the Sith he was blinded by his own ego and paid for it dearly...

    • @Elia-Burani
      @Elia-Burani 6 ปีที่แล้ว +126

Grand Moff Zambiemonk mariocastillo813 Every general, every soldier, every warrior who has lived in our history knows that in every fight the first thing one has to do is to choose the terrain.
Obi wan did not go there by chance or fortune. he intentionally went to there, Anakin instead, he failed at the basic, Strength, Power, and Speed count anything if you fail at the basis of combat.
We can see it numerous times in our history. During the first Punic Wars the Romans lost at sea against the Carthaginians, but on the ground they won practically always, so to win they invented the "Corvo" a huge bridge that fell on the enemy ship and anchored to it, thus allowing a boarding. Napoleon and hitler, unlike the Russians, did not know how to fight under the harsh winter, and so they lost, both marking the beginning of their departure in Russia.
But without going so far back, the United States, during the Vietnam war, were all focused on strength and numbers, thus losing against poorly armed farmers, who, unlike the Americans, knew the jungles very well.
do you understand where I want to go? Anakin has failed in the basics, he lost for a beginner's mistake, which makes it even sadder, is the fact that Anakin, the choice of terrain, has seen it in practice millions of times in the clone war. Demonstrating once again, that Anakin was a very powerful weapon, but without someone who wields it, he can not do anything.

Another little factoid: during their fight, Anakin actually tried this move once before, so Obi-Wan knew what he was going to do. When Anakin is on the droid and Obi-Wan is on the platform, Anakin jumps over Obi-Wan, surprising him but lands too far away to instantly go for the killing blow.
Because of this, Obi-Wan knew what Anakin was planning. That is where "It's over, I have the high ground" and "Don't try it" come into play. He KNEW Anakin was going to try Obi-Wan's killing blow against Maul against him, so he tried to reach his friend like a Master would try to teach his student. He told him the glaring error in his plan, when Anakin's response told Obi-Wan that he wasn't getting through to him, he blatantly tried to warn him by telling him not to try it. And so, we get this scene...

Yeah, I never got the hate for Jar Jar, as if C3PO or the Ewoks weren't comic relief too..
I think they portrayed Obi Wan well, same with Palpatine. They also introduced great characters like Dooku and Mace Windu. My only gripe is Anakin's portrayal, and specially his quick descent into the dark side, it didn't make much sense how he came to willingly kill dozens of kids just because he was scared of a nightmare where his lover died. The worst part is that he supposedly did all that to save Padme and the first thing he does when he sees her is kill her, incredibly dumb.
Palpatine was believable in his conniving ways, so was Dooku, but Anakin's turn seemed to dumb for me. It definitely wasn't earned, that's why Revenge of the Sith is my least favorite film, plus it was dumb how Yoda quietly backed away from keeping on fighting Sidious, knowing what was at stake, that's very out of character too.
And the other part I didn't like much about the prequel trilogy is the flashiness of the lightsaber fighting styles, compared to the original trilogy. I mean, we see Luke and Vader do a couple of flips but they went all in on those flips with the Maul's fights, Yoda, etc. They tried to adress that dissonance by introducing different "styles" via Dooku's more restrained style but it still seemed farfetched to me. But this is a minor problem compared with Anakin's arc, I stand by the assertion that it was lazy and through-the-motions mostly.

I think the high ground is clever writing. The entire prequel trilogy up to that point had beaten us over the head with Anakin being more powerful than anybody else. So the only way for Obi-Wan to win was for him to use intelligence and tactics against Anakin. Anything else would've defeated the whole drama up to that point. Plus, the high ground plays into Obi-Wan's established character as well of allowing enemies to come to him, using his brain in a fight and all that.

@Andreea - Bianca Munteanu I like your discourse and explanation of Obi Wan and the fight from Episode 3. However, can it be explained why Anakin's (Vader's) attack in this situation was so easily countered, and in Episode 1 Obi Wan was able to successfully pull off a harder version of the same attack against Darth Maul? Granted there was no taunting or mention "of the higher ground" in Episode 1 and one could say "Maul wasn't expecting Kenobi to counter from his position".
Either way, I feel like there must be more to these alternate outcomes. Please feel free to give your take...

But to me it was Obi-Wan’s cleverness that got the best of Anakin, not so much the “high ground”. I believe Anakin had enough power to probably clear 3 times that height. It’s just that Obi-Wan knew how arrogant Anakin was. He was his Master after all, thru out the clone wars he is constantly reminding Anakin to not be so rash and to think things thru and not to rely on his strength anole. He knew his weakness so he baited him but at the same time hoping that he wouldn’t fall for it. In the end Obi-Wan was a warrior of the light who was incorruptible. He didn’t let His relationship with Anakin cloud his mind, he saw an opening and he struck.

In general, if you’re in the air, your movements become much much easier to predict, and react to, because there’s so much less you can do. On the ground, you can move in any direction, but once you’re in the air, you have to follow through on the arc you chose, with minor deviations.

I think you’re selling Obi-Wan short. Remember he MASTERED Soresu. The defensive form. DEFENSIVE. As he did with Grevious, Kenobi could have stayed defensive until Anakin tired out. (Yeah I know, Grevious didn’t tire out, he was a cyborg). Look how many strikes per second Kenobi deflected from Grevious, no one else could do that. So Obi-Wan stays on the defensive, Anakin being Anakin would get more pissed off that he hadn’t yet been able to get through Obi-Wan’s defenses, more pissed off that even though he was “the chosen one” and a sith he hadn’t yet defeated Obi-Wan, he would have eventually done something stupid (like trying a basic Ataru flip over Obi-Wan 😑) and left himself open to a slick move from Kenobi. I believe that no matter where the battle ended up, each person being who they were, the outcome would be the same. Anakin’s arrogance would still have caused him to lose. Obi-Wan, being the master of defense, would have kept doing his thing, and though it was killing him emotionally, would have kept that cool head of his and waited for Anakin to get “too big for his britches” and leave an opening that Kenobi could exploit. You said it yourself, Obi-Wan was the THINKER, Anakin the act first-think later type. Do I think Anakin was better than Obi-Wan in skill? Yes. If you just base it on ability and how strong in the force each was. But if you go by strategy, long term planning, being/staying focused on the task, and adding in Kenobi’s mastery of Soresu, then no. Obi-Wan wins. The smart fighter wins over the aggressive but short sighted fighter. I hate when people don’t give Obi-Wan the credit he deserves. This is all just my opinion. I’m cool with other people having a different opinion. That’s what makes these things so fun and interesting to debate. I like getting to maybe see something I never noticed before. And yes, I’m a total Obi-Wan forever kinda girl. 😁

Riy99 Bl Obi wan would still beat Skywalker even without the high ground for two main reasons:
      1. Skywalker was powerful but Obi wan was the wiser one and knows the technique of his ex padawan and vice versa.
      2. The dark side has a flaw when given to much anger which Anakin had in spades on Mustafar and his ego gushed out thinking he surpassed Obi but Obi was always more skilled and had a tendency to use his environment as an asset to fight which is seen in most of his fights against General Grievous in the Clone Wars. Having the high ground was literally fighting Obi wan un his own terms which Skywalker in his ego failed to see until his legs gave him that shock of reality.

Great point! I always thought that too, after they had force pushed each other in the control room where Anakin had killed the Separatists, was the point to me Obiwan realized that he couldn’t continue to let it be a total offensive onslaught for Anakin to let him push the pace in open space, as soon enough he would tire and his apprentice could make the killer blow. But rather slow it down and make it a more tactical and mental battle, (jumping to the Bridge, getting the high ground (the 1st time before the platform drops into the lava, and jumping onto the platform and getting up River before the waterfall drop off. Obiwan adapted as the fight went on and made it a chess match of experience whereas Anakin was so blinded by rage it eventually cost him the battle with his arrogance.

If you go into the lore you actually get a really good explanation: Anakin often studied his Masters techniques from their lives via security footage since he's a great tech prodigy. He found surveillance video of a young Kenobi fighting Darth Maul and even asked him how he accomplished his death strike on the fallen Sith from such a disadvantageous position.
In short Obiwan knew Anakin would try that very maneuver against him as he recognized the similarities in their positions at the end of their duel on Mustafar.
Even in the cartoon Ben Kenobi feinted Darth Maul into a similar position to force Maul into using a similar strike used to kill Quigon Jinn.
TLDR: Obi-Wan Kenobi is such a great swordsman that he can make you position yourself right where he needs you to be.

By Revenge of Sith, obiwan and anakin tricked Dooku into thinking they were still pretty far behind in terms of lightsabre combat. But dooku was caught off guard when they finally switched it up a notch, with Obiwan showing his perfect mastery of Form 3. Dooku was shooked because he couldn't get pass Obiwan's simple yet impenetrable defensive lighrsabre moves. In the book, dooku noted how obiwan perfectly yet so minimally and precisely block all his attacks. Seeing this he had no choice but to use the force to knock him out because he had no idea how to beat him and Anakin was coming back up to support Obiwan. I've always maintained that it was more than just having the high ground that led to Anakin's loss, though Anakin's impatience in response to Obi-Wan's taunt contributed. But Anakin's weakness, which led him to the dark side, was his inability to release attachments.
Obi-Wan beat Maul, who'd had much higher ground over him than he had over Anakin, so that couldn't really be dispositive. But Anakin (at that point) really did NOT want to kill Obi-Wan...he was conflicted. He sabotaged himself, unconsciously, or at least held back, (perhaps imagining that Obi-Wan would not actually kill him in that situation).
But Obi-Wan was a master of detachment, in the Jedi fashion...he was even able to let go of his own life when the time came. He could maim his best friend, his "brother", if it was necessary, and leave him for dead, burned and suffering. Anakin, at that time, with his attachments and loyalties, was unable to bring his full rage and hatred to bear against Obi-Wan (his eyes weren't yellow at that moment, remember), and Obi-Wan was able to capitalize on that hesitancy, even though Anakin had easily beaten Dooku after Dooku had easily beaten Obi-Wan. After that, though, Anakin truly came to hate Obi-Wan, which is understandable. Only as he's about to burn and saying, "I hate you!" do his eyes go yellow. Had he been in that state when attacking Obi-Wan at the end, with pure hatred, he would have won, high ground be damned.
    I have spoken.

That’s what I’ve been saying for so long, Anakin was totally holding back against Obi-Wan. I think there was even a part of him that hoped that it he could just make Obi-Wan realize the hypocrisy of the council, that they might still find a way to reconcile. That’s why he held back. There’s literally a moment quite early in the duel when Anakin has an easy kill shot with Obi-Wan’s back turned. Against any other opponent, he would not hesitate to take that kill, but he couldn’t bring himself to let Obi-Wan go, he wanted, needed, him alive, so he could expose the wrongdoings of the Jedi, explain how they had both been duped. But of course, Obi-Wan wouldn’t listen, and after that, the outcome was sealed.
I think Anakin may have even slightly lost the will to go on fighting at that point. He felt so betrayed that Obi-Wan would choose the Jedi over him after all their years of friendship, that he couldn’t focus on the battle anymore, and this is why he jumped so weakly straight into Obi-Wan’s lightsaber when he was more than capable of jumping over it.

Eh. I agree that early on he wasn’t trying to kill him. He was probably trying to get him to see his convictions. Anakin didn’t turn on the dark side all the way until he jumped on the same vessel as obi. Even jumping from the smaller one to the bigger one should’ve ended the fight for him, being so close in distance. But then anakin says, after obi truly picks his side, that it is over for him. He feels the dark side now flowing through his veins, and the whole time he was going easy. The next thing that happens is they lock light sabers and Anakin goes for the kill shot, it’s obi that realizes that, and uses his intelligence to flip off of the vessel. And that makes Anakin super angry. He almost had him. That anger blinds his judgment. Just like it did to sidious at the end of 6. Remember he would’ve been able to sense vaders betrayal but he didn’t because he was going nuts with the dark side lightning. So same thing happened to Anakin. His rage over shadowed his judgment. Remember he thought he could over throw the sidious right then and there, which he couldn’t. Sidious was more powerful than him at that time. I chalk this one up completely to arrogance.

    My two cents:
    1) in another video's comments someone mentioned that it was written in the script that during the duel Obi-Wan had several opportunities to strike Anakin down and he wouldn't. He tried to find moments to reason. Funnily enough if you review the fight scene by scene like Shadiversity did, you find several moments in which Anakin presents his unguarded back to Obi-Wan. (in all fairness, Obi-Wan also does this now and then)
    2) right before the infamous high ground scene, Anakin performs the same jump to get onto Obi-Wan's platform. Obi-Wan swings at him twice but missing due to Anakin staying out of reach. Then in the high ground scene, the distance between the two is much larger horizontally and vertically. Anakin performs the same move but isn't able to stay out of Obi-Wan's reach like he did before.
So imagine the scene before, Obi-Wan says, don't try it, Anakin's makes the jump and laughs, you underestimate my power. Then they hack at each other. Followed by the high ground scene. Obi-Wan says, don't try it, it won't work this time. Now Anakin laughs again, goes for it, and gets slashed down. Would it make more sense?

I would like to point something out from having read the entire Jedi Apprentice series, you have made an important omission in characterizing Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan was an EXTREMELY aggressive, dominating and powerful warrior. He wasn’t allowed to duel younglings his own age after a certain point and was nearly expelled from the order for failing to attract a Master to take him as a padawan, because he was so aggressive and hot headed. In dueling, he focused on absolute domination of his opponent, master Yoda noting to Qui-Gon, while trying to convince him to take Obi-Wan as a padawan, that he would often forgo opportunities to win a duel technically for the opportunity to continue to rain down upon his already well subdued opponent. At the time that Obi-Wan took the trials, he had been with Qui-Gon for many years, and had benifited from Qui-Gon’s influence tremendously, many of his rougher edges smoothed down by experience and Qui-Gon’s wisdom, yet we still see a cocksure, mouthy, hostile character in Phantom Menace, the remnants of the smoldering warrior mentality of Obi-Wan’s youth.
In the series, Obi-Wan is portrayed similarly to Anakin in the Prequels, he is shown as physically capable, and rescues Qui-Gon often at the tip of a lightsaber. So while true that he was much less force sensitive and intuitive, I don’t think it was an accident that Obi-Wan was able to defeat Darth Maul in single combat while Qui-Gon failed, he has the aggressive and willingly self destructive tendencies of a warrior, rushing into battle unconcerned for safety, with only the desire to strike in his heart. Anakin’s better performance against Count Dookoo had more to do with Dookoo’s success in manipulating poor dumb Obi-Wan than his ability to defeat him outright with a lightsaber, and he had several situational advantages against Windu as well... Just wanted to provide a bit of my own context on this, but I really don’t think many Jedi, as they are shown as kind of complacent and lacking their historical mojo, have a definitive advantage against Obi-Wan in a fair one on one fight...

I believe Obi-Wan had the "FATHER/SON" advantage. He was basically like an older brother or father to Anakin. So in that role he got to watch Anakin from a young child....all his tendencies....all his mistakes....all his weaknesses. This combined fatherly instincts with wisdom make him basically the BEST to defeat Anakin. Obviously the arrogance and high ground helped as well.

Before I didn’t really get “the high ground” but after watching this video, I began to understand. Anakin wanted to prove to Obi-Wan and himself that he was as good as his master. Yes, he believed that he was the superior one from the bottom of his heart, but he was constantly under the control of Obi-Wan. (Like we saw in AotC) He was never seen as better than Obi-Wan even though he was obviously more powerful. He wanted to do the same thing Obi-Wan did to Darth Maul; so that he can prove to his master that he wasn’t worse, that he was equal- or maybe better.
The high ground scene wasn’t a physical fight, but more like a symbolic fight.
I couldn’t explain my point well, but eh, English isn’t my native language.

I agree with both killing and high ground. In legends, maul only became a sith after Palpatein saw he was willing to kill his master. This is a big turning point in anakin to the dark side as he wanted to kill his own master, without any remorse or fear. Just pure hatred.

I think because of Obi-Wan's lack of force power he focused on swordsman ship and strategy to make up for it. During their battle Anikan may have been the aggressor the whole time but due to Obi-Wan's defensive style he played in to Obi-Wan's hands thinking he was winning. Also playing into his ego. Giving up ground to feed it. Then telling Anikan after gaining and pushing him back so far you can't beat me. Thats when Anikan lost all since and fell for "the high ground"

Definitely the best lightsaber battle of the entire saga. I agree with your assessment, just like maul Vader's arrogance is what led to his defeat. @@Carlos-fh8wk It's both. Picture it this way. That was in theory Obi-Wan's last chance to end it given the surroundings that he had. Yes sloped ground but for the most part open so the acrobatic aggressive form of Anakin would have the upper hand. Yes Obi-Wan being the master of Soresu could outlast him but that's a roll of the dice.
Obi-Wan knew he had to end it so he played into Anakin's arrogance. What the Original video didn't cover was Obi-Wan's slight breakdown after. Yelling you were the chosen one kinda shows his irritation and sadness.....but it's not until he says in a normal voice "You were my brother, Anakin. I loved you." That you truly can grasp that earlier when he said don't try it.....he really didn't want him to.
Referring to the voice it's like when your parents yell at you cause they are mad versus speaking with you when they are disappointed. Which one hits home more.
I think he didn't want him to do it more than wanting him to. But he was both for sure.

Anakin tried to actually JUMP OVER obi wan. that was why obi wan said "don't try it". The move Anakin was attempting wasn't a psychotic rage filled corkscrew like Palpatine pulled off, it was a very common Form IV flip move that most jedi of that era commonly used in combat. Being that the move was so basic, Anakin was arrogant enough to even think that simple of a flip was gonna work in the manner he was trying to use it. Look closely, notice... he could've EASILY landed down hill and faked obi wan THEN flipped over obi wan while they were closer together.... He wanted to literally use the most common Ataru flip move used in history just as a final "fuck you" to obi wan... Obi Wan wasn't having that. Anakin woulda landed too close in the first place even if he landed over Obi-Wan. He was destined to fail the minute he jumped regardless of how Obi-Wan went about handling such a predictable and basic move.

You're an idiot he was also the MASTER of form 5 as Obi was of form 3. Just ask Dooku about that..... and form 5 was literally created to counter form 3, The lack of offense it had spawned the strongest offensive form of all the styles. Which Anakin, with the strongest force connection in existence, completely mastered. He was all about the offensive. They were polar opposites when it came to their fighting styles, it's an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
