Obi-Wan is the ultimate chess master. He sees a flaw and trains to fix it for the next time. His form is the practice of his behavior in the manner of patience. Hence the name the negotiator because negotiations take time and patience and understanding the motives of the other and planning how to counter.

This is the reason why I think Obi-Wan wasn’t simply getting lucky against Anakin when they fought on Mustafar. Obi-Wan knowing who Anakin was had a gameplan to backpedal and wait for a moment of weakness which Anakin eventually showed. Obi-Wan was easily one of the most refined and proficient duelist in the CW era, and his greatest weapon was always his mind and wit.

@TheDevilOfDallas I don't disagree, but to say that someone scales because they "beat" someone is crazy. Rock doesn't scale to paper cause it beats scissors. They are different fighting styles. Vaders fighting style is a barrage of powerful attacks. Obi wans is quick and defensive. Dookus is technical and offensive. Every time dooku fights obi wan he's won, and obi wan didn't get stronger on Mustafar, he just fished for anakins weakness.

Obi Wan wasn't even slightly lucky against Anakin. It was his calling as a last stand Jedi against the sith, the biggest feat any Jedi has ever performed. There's no way through talent or ferocity could he ever match Vader. It was through sheer will of the force, through knowledge of what was at stake. Unpopular opinion, Vader here was a match for Yoda/Palpatine. Obi Wan performed an amazing act, and to win he used his knowledge of Anakin. Only he knew he could goad him into that exact move. Obi Wan is the definition of a hero.

I like to think Obi-won was always able to safely 'touch' the dark-side in moments of dire need.
When Dooku felt the flash of Dark in Obi-won, he found it confusing.
For just a moment, Dark and Light were in perfect balance within Obi-won.
"Wait, what? I thought Skywalker was supposed to be the Chosen One..."
Confidence became confusion, which grew-up really fast to become fear.

Then suddenly Dooku realizes that Obi Wan had become an absolute master of Soresu and Anakin fooled Dooku into thinking that he was a Shien stylist I believe and just as suddenly as Obi Wan, he pulls out Djem So and Dooku has an "oh sh*t" moment and realizes he's in big trouble. the terrifying part about Kenobi isn't that he is going to rush in, overwhelm and cut you to ribbons like Anakin. Kenobi isn't an avalanche. No, Kenobi is like a deep, dark forest.
If you wander in, you'll find the path you walked in on, has disappeared. The trees seem to be tightening around you, a cordon of silent sentinels, cutting off your path, vines and roots hinder you, until you're pace slows to a crawl. In desperation, you might choose to climb up one of the trees, only to find out that the climb up is long and perilous. And even if you reach the top of one tree, all you'll see is a silent forest, stretching far, far into the horizon. Your own breathing is reflected back at you from the depths of the forest, echoing all around you. You're lost, and can't find your way out.
Kenobis strenght, is his defense. While Anakin is the bulldog, the master fencer, the assailant. Kenobi adapted his fighting style to complement his, to stand next to his friend and pupil, to support him. If they both took on an aggressive fighting style, they'd get in each others way. Instead, Kenobi chose to be the Thorn, the ever present threat, a foil that can strike at any time, and can receive any attack, only to counter it and parry back, the shield to Anakins sword. Kenobi also had cunning, we all like the way hes always joking and when he teases his enemies. But this is not just on a whim. Kenobi understand balance, focus and control perhaps better than anyone else in the Start Wars universe. And so, he is always trying his best to unbalance his opponent, to rob them of their focus and take over control of the battle. He is a master strategist and a cunning warrior, and i believe that much of the Dun Möch technique that Anakin used, was ultimately learned from Kenobi.

    • @katkenobi6765
      @katkenobi6765 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I agree. Obi-Wan even said (talking to Anakin, about Anakin’s style) “You think with your lightsaber”, and that’s very true. And for Anakin, it works perfectly. Obi-Wan, however, is the chess player, he’s think 3 or 4 moves ahead. There is a reason he’s The Negotiator. He’s always thinking out things, possibilities, what to do if the opponent does this thing or that thing, he listens to what’s being said and uses the other person’s own words against them.
It wasn’t “luck” that had him win against Anakin. It was that brain of his. Obi-Wan knew Anakin SO WELL, and he knew that eventually Anakin would get overconfident and make a mistake. Which Anakin did. Anakin got too big for his britches, thought he was King Shit, and made a simple Ataru flip over Obi-Wan, forgetting who it was he was fighting. Like, come on Anakin, it’s fucking Obi-Wan Kenobi. You don’t do stupid things in a battle with him, that’s how you get fucked up.
In the movie, when Obi-Wan figures out that Anakin is gonna try to jump to where Obi-Wan is, he tells him “Don’t try it”, but he says it with concern and worry and something else in his voice. I’ve always felt that Obi-Wan knew that would be his moment and he’d have to cut Anakin up ;which he really didn’t want to do. He loved Ani like a brother). I’ve always really loved that scene.
I’m glad you mentioned Dun Moch, finally I’m not the only who sees Obi-Wan using it. They say Obi-Wan is a Master Troll, and he is. Even when he’s just messing around with Anakin, he takes the time to troll him lol. And he LOVES using it on Ventress and Grievious especially. That’s why Obi-Wan is my favourite in SW (a super close 2nd is Satele Shan). Now that I’ve talked about Obi-Wan being a savage troll, I’m gonna have to go watch the vids of him trolling everyone.

The narrator explained that Obi-Wan was not as potent in the force as most other masters (regarding midi-chlorians). Also, he wasn't considered the most talented lightsaber fighter, choosing to master form 3, Soresu, a style often considered too defensive by other masters. Still, he did shine in a factor other Force Users from both the Jedi and Sith often failed. This is why I love the Star Wars books. It's fun to see the movies, but you learn so much more about the thought processes of these characters in the book, and you can really get in their head. God I miss my EU book collection. Wish I hadn't lost it in a fire.

I also like how in the book it shows just how close Anakin and Obi-Wan were for Obi-Wan couldn't really keep secrets from Anakin and how Obi-Wan convinced Anakin to spy for them because they feared the Sith were a danger to Palpatine. It showed how much Obi-Wan cared for Anakin and why him turning to the dark side effected so badly.

Form 3 Soresu is a completely defensive form. Obi-wan learned it after his first duel with Darth Maul when Maul killed Qui-gon. Form 3 allows Obi-wan to use less energy in a lightsaber fight by using less movements and deflecting the lightsaber instead of trying to avoid it. The form was designed for blasters, but masters realized it was perfect for lightsabers as well.
This allows Obi-wan to last in the battle longer than his opponent and allow him to come up with better strategies to win in his fights. Obi-wan was not the only one to master this form he just used it the most out of them. Mace Windo and Master Yoda were also masters of this form as they mastered all the forms, and they used it in conjunction with other forms. The best masters switch to this form to defend then switch out of it for offensive then switch back.

Dooku's fear, I think, stems not only from his underestimation of Kenobi, but also his underestimation of Soresu. I don't think he thought that either one was terribly impressive before this point; he had never faced either form or wielder at their true peak. Dooku is a duellist - it's his thing. Precise, perfect placement of the blade - which also extends to his mindset and the way he interacts with others. Soresu, in the hands of the Master, totally screwed that tactic. Kenobi with Soresu = you can't touch me, Dooku. Of course he'd find this sudden and previously unthinkable reversal of control disturbing.

By the way dooku still doesn’t want to kill kenobi, he still thinks he might be able to get obi wan to the dark side, and also anakin (obviously) in attack if the clones dooku tries for the first time when he captures obi wan, that’s another reason why he might be overwhelmed. Because he’s not trying to kill obi wan, he’s trying to keep him at bay

Be that as it may, Dooku was fighting both Obi Wan and Anakin at the same time. Also, he used the force to throw Obi Wan out of the picture. It went all to plan except for perhaps he was not trying to kill Anakin. I think if the duel was Dooku fighting to kill Anakin, he most likely could have. That wasn't the plan, hence there was some restraint from Dooku. And that restraint cost him.

Ironically, I think this is far more resembling of the tactic Darth Zannah used against Darth Bane in their final duel, Zannah as a Master of Soresu, and even used a double bladed lightsaber with shorter blades to make it even more effective, allowing her to move the saber closer to her body when fighting in close quarters or in da case of her duel with Bane, how his blinding fast and unrelenting attacks boxed her in, which she used to hide the fact that she was essentially making little to no effort to parry his attacks, letting him thinking she wasn't going to attack him, all the while expecting him to use Essence Transfer on her, to show another trick she had on her sleeve, the fact that she was also a Master of Sith Sorcery, when he used this specific sith sorcery against her, he essentially decreeted his own doom.

Well, that is a theory. The problem with the ROTS novelization of the duel, it has not only been de-canonized, but the Clone Wars series undermines the novel narrative. The Duel on Oba-Diah more or less undercuts the ROTS explanation of events. Dooku has already seen the dynamic duo change up their styles on Oba-Diah, since he forced them to. Moreover, the ROTS novel implies the three never dueled in-between AOTC and ROTS, which is not the case anymore. If one follows the Clone Wars duels, and then only the ROTS On-Screen duel, Dooku owned Obi-Wan from the start, dominated him on Oba-Dia and in Son of Dathomir, and then owned him once more in ROTS. What is noteworthy, however, is why Dooku kept sparing Obi-Wan after having a clear deathblow window on Oba-Diah and ROTS. Sometimes a dude has your number. Like Obi-Wan and Anakin. Or Vos and Dooku.

This is EXACTLY what happens in REAL Fighting gung-fu between various styles and attacks. If you know more than one style, which many back in the day didn't. you would use one style to either lead your attack or defend. This would allow you to test your opponent to learn their techniques and hopefully their real fighting style be it a specific animal style "Tiger, snake, Eagle" or some other methods, then you would know whether or not your MAIN style would be successful against them or not. The more styles you know, the greater you would have one to pull out of your arsenal to counter them.
THIS is Exactly what Obi-Wan did here is using Ataru as the FEINT to lull him into over confidence then he pulled out his REAL Style of Soresu once Dooku was thrown off.
You can see Gordon Liu do the EXACT same thing here when fighting this Japanese Ninja. He uses standard gung-fu fighting to learn his style, then pulls out Crane style after seeing enough and knowing exactly what will counter it.

Only by reading the books and by channels like this one, can we understand the greatness of StarWars.
Words like Soresu, Niman, Ataru, etc are never known via series nor movies.
If we look at the movies, Obi-Wan always looks like someone who is 2 or 3 steps behind his own Padawan.
In the CloneWars Obi-Wan only scratches in beard, most of the time.

I would say that Dooku was less terrified, and more infuriated and uncomfortable with how kenobi progressed as a swordsman in a form that rivalled his in effectiveness in a duel scenario like this. Had Kenobi focused more on force defences and how to increase his force barrier, he might have been more unstoppable, he might have actually posed a threat even by himself.
Despite Dooku's swordskills having plateaued years back and his limited stamina, he still had complete consummate control of the situation with his force abilities and speed of thought precision and application of them to strongarm his way through Kenobi and neutralise him if he needed to, and he did.
