LOL. In all seriousness this video was helpful because I don't play competitively anymore, but I keep up with all the new stuff coming out and it would be good to have a strategy for if I ever come back to the scene.
Pay attention to their combo. Many decks, even if they dont do the exact same thing every time will try to do something similar games 2 and 3 as they did game 1. Even if you didnt draw any interuptions on the first game and their board is already too big for you to break, still watch their turn carefully and pick out potential choke points or weaknesses. This will run down the clock and give you less time to win the 2nd and 3rd games, but the information you gain about this deck you dont know at all will be invaluable to both side decking and playing both of those games.
I’m not a competitive yugioh player as I’ve never competed against other people in tournaments so this helps me if I ever compete in tournaments and the advice is really useful. Thank you for making this helpful video
step 1 - interrupt constantly to read what their cards do step 2 - start caring less each time until you trust what your opponent says is the effect step 3 - look out for effects that seem too good to be true.
hey, very good job, this is one of the most informative videos I have ever hear im not too good with english to congratulate you, but I hope you keep making this kind of "unspoken but needed to know topics of yugioh" videos so again, thanks for this excelent video
Cool advice! One of the things I suggest when playing against new decks is to actually take notes or - if you play on a simulator - save the replay. Once you go back to the duel and replay it in your mind with knowledge you acquired about the deck later, you can think of what you could have done better and learn.
If you know thy enemy and know thyself, you needn't fear the outcomes of 100 battles. If you know thyself but do not know thy enemy, then for every victory gained, you will also suffer a defeat. If you neither know thyself nor the enemy, you will always suffer defeat in every battle - Sun Tzu, Art of War
Very nice advise. While I don't play competitively, I do play with custom cards, so basically every duel is this for me. One thing I would like to add is that whenever you read a new card, *always* make note of each and every restriction that card places on the user. Especially pay attention to cards that only let you use one of their effects per turn (sometimes a player uses one of those early in a turn, then forgets the restriction and tries to use a different effect later) or things that can't be used immediately (basically watch for the line "except during the turn this card was sent to the GY"). Cards with more restrictions should have more scrutiny to make sure you remember them all (for example it's a known fact that you cannot play Card of Demise without forgetting at least one of its draw backs). I have won more then a few duels by just copy/pasting an effect of an opponent's card verbatim, then pointing out that they cannot do whatever play they just did. (For example, Upstart Goblin into Pot of Extravagance into "At the start of your Main Phase 1".)
From someone that has left formats to come back later several times this is pretty accurate, I usually see matches of the meta decks and learn some of them as well
Another thing I would advise is just watching DB Grinder. He shows Duel replays of high rated players usually playing meta decks and gives great commentary on the field. I’ve learned a lot about the different decks in the format from this channel.
Also important: play a modern deck. Getting back into yugioh in 2010 after dropping the game in 2005, I had no idea what all the new cards did but more importantly it didn't matter because my old deck just couldn't stop them anyway. If you want to get back into the game, you can't expect to bring an outdated deck and keep up. A lot of returning players need to understand that, I think. I refused to swallow my pride and accept that in 2010, so I dropped the game again in a salty ragequit and didn't start again until just last year. Now I'm still learning all these unfamiliar cards, but at least I'm playing a deck that can do something about them.
a good rule of thumb for playing decks you’ve never seen, that doesn’t always apply, but often does, is to interrupt the first link 1, the link 2, or the normal summon combo starter.

Lol I like playing decks that people have probably never seen before. There's that chance they may make mistakes and misplay against you if they have no knowledge on what your cards do since they never seen it before. Nowadays hardly anyone knows or remembers anything about Dark Worlds.
Maybe a good thing to mention Would've been investment vs payoff. How normal summoned monsters are in a way more valuable than special summoned monsters, Or how negating a negate on a card you are loosing regardless might not be worth it.
I always seem to struggle with generic removal/drawing choices for my spells/traps and sideboard. Like picking up the one Raigeki is simple but should I do all 3 twin twisters or is that overkill? 2 twin twisters and an MST perhaps? Monster and back row removal is always something I've found hard. Just a ton of selection. How much is too much?
This is good, but you forgot the all important part of Rogue tier or lower. Decks people don't actually know about. More people have a basic meta understanding than they do general knowledge about various decks. Anyway, good video on the meta side.
Can you talk about pendulum summoning? Is it still strong? Or it has died because of the new master rule revisions, pendulum zones are now shared with spell and trap zones and the metalfoes link monster being banned. And if they are in a bad place what do you think that can help them become a little better but not too broken.
It's not strong, and it hasn't died either. It is just not as good anymore due to power creep - And some specific bans. So the reason why they're not good doesn't have much to do with the new master rules.
Sadly, pendulums do not have many of their strongest cards since most of them are banned, so that makes the deck a lot worse, it's not really the master rule itself since pendulums were pretty good in mr4, it's the fact that they have few good cards that are not on the list. Though I would love to see electrumite back, I sadly think pendulums are gonna be in a bad spot for a long time...
Thanks for the insite guys. I've always wondered if a full powered pepe deck will be stomp the competition in the current format because it was once the a tier 0 deck that caused konami to make an emergency ban list to try to rain the combo or just a great meta contender. If you could get me some insights as well, it would be much appreciated.
