Experts (psychologists etc.) say that wealthy people are often very low or completely lacking in empathy, at least for anyone outside their circle. Apparently they literally cannot relate to ordinary folks.
It is sad, on a human level. Empathy is a survival mechanism that helps humans support and collaborate with each other in society, which is our natural milieu. Shows up very early in babies even before they can talk (notice how they mimic facial expressions, as if they're trying out the feelings they sense in other people, and cry when other babies cry). Back to poor ol' Paris Hilton, not that I'll cry much for her - she'll make out ok with her gazillions and high society at her back.
