I just watched you and Kevin get that rotary truck running and I have to say that was awesome to watch. Thanks for that. Now I’m subscribed here and look forward to seeing what you got cookin.
New sub from JYD. Love the content and similarities to JYD as well as VGG but with your own personality. Looking forward to binging the channel. Great stuff.
With mouse damage, these old Jeeps had a TON of vacuum lines to control things so another thing to check. For example basically the entire HVAC system is vacuum controlled, my 84 was running rough when I first got it, idling was rough until I realized [and could hear] a vacuum leak in the dash from dried out and crack vac lines. The cruise control could also have vac lines in the loop.
Had an '84 , same setup [360 AT AC] but it spent it's whole life in Florida so it was virtually rust free. I spend some time peeling the baked on faux wood panelling and have to admit it was looking real nice, Drove like a Sherman tank, I loved it. But my bro's truck died an ugly death and the Jeep for us was a third vehicle so I gave it to him. I was so sad to learn the quadratrack finally gave out and instead of letting me know he just pulled the plates off of it and left it on the interstate. DOH! Seeing how much these things go for now I'm sure he regrets it now too.
Man, thank you for this. No one ever does a will. It run and drive on the Grand Wagoneer. The white ones are beautiful. I'm partial to the purple Wagoneers
I’ve had good luck either knocking a freeze plug out and putting a block heater in it or inline heater on the bottom coolant hose for adding heat to the engine block
The XJ hate is crazy.. most car and jeep people ive met love em, and alot actually prefer them to wranglers. Bulletproof drivetrain… 4.0 with aisan trans.. and from personal experience far more reliable than the amc 360 SJ’s.. don’t get me wrong though i love the full size jeeps.
Friend had a GW for years. 360/727 combo...it got worse mileage that my F350 SD, crew cab, long bed with a Warn bumper/winch combo- oh, and a V10. Get them on the highway, he was single digit MPG at 70 MPH and I could eek out 12 MPG. The GW is more plush in the seats, carpet, and ride- definitely shorter & not as tall, too (the truck is like driving an aircraft carrier in town)
It's always exciting to get a motor unsized! I had a Ford that had the Duraspark ignition or never start " Brain Box '' I always carried 2 or 3 extra boxes with me to make sure I could get back!%
The 360 I had was a good engine, but the timing chain was totally stretched. Once it was done reliable as anything. The 86 wagoneer reminds me of the one Carrie Fisher drove in the Movie " The Burbs" with Tom Hanks. Cheers for the troubleshooting....
My dad owns a 87 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, the last year that AMC made the last Wagoneer before they were bought out, the sunroof may leak with heavy rainfall and the windows have flextracks and if broken the windows will not go back up and the back window might also have a few issues and the shift linkage goes out and I'm not kidding get rid of it because it will not go into park and might roll away and hit something, they make aftermarket shifters for the 727 and have fun trying to get parts because there's not many companies who make parts for a Wagoneer, you can swap the motor in a Wagoneer it will take a bit of fabrication and lots of little things, I love these AMC jeeps and we have 3 but their great for off-road or a street machine/show car or a summer cruiser, so that's all I can say but jeeps like the Wagoneer are prone to rusted out rocker panels and floor in the north say like Michigan or Wisconsin
Someone that had a lot of Fords always wondered why the Duraspark system was nicknamed "neverspark" I work for Summit Racing starting in 1990 and being a Mustang owner I asked MSD during one of their seminars why they didn't really offer much for the Ford factory ignition system. And I was told by their technician that it was because the factory duraspark system was just that good and it was hard to improve on it.
First time watching. I had a '74 Cherokee an later an '83 GW fresh outta high school. Both tough rigs, but the tailgates an lower rockers on both rusted so bad, they were scrapped. 360 engine was awesome.👍 ill be watching your progress.😊
"its an AMC 360. Which means-" Which means it burns oil and throws main bearings at the drop of a hat. I grew up with these vehicles. Time has warped peoples perception on how good these cars really were. There was a reason AMC went bankrupt.
Yeah... My uncle had a wagoneer with a 360, kept it in Amazing condition cosmeticwise. In the end he ended up swapping in a 426 in it... (This is me retelling from him, so if it doesn't make sense, don't get at me)
LOL "Sunburn from a desk lamp" LOL Great job reviving that legendary Jeep! But the XJ hate... I've got an 1998 XJ with 315k miles that I'd put up against that Wagoneer any day. 😀
@@BuildSeason I bought my "Toaster" from New Mexico and did a full build with it. Started with the leaking main seal, valve cover gasket, intake\exhaust manifold gasket (original engine btw). Fully replaced suspension with a 3" lift and larger tires. Brakes, master cylinder, radiator, injectors, plugs, wires, all bushings, fixed wiring gremlins, headliner, clock spring, all LED lighting throughout, spare tire swing gate rear bumper, full exhaust, you name it. Insanely fun and easy to work on a rust free XJ! I have a ton of pictures but never filmed it, (during COVID and break from my TH-cam activity). I did put the full story on my channel now, with the history. When I was done I drove it to Indiana to the Bad Lands Off Road Park and wheeled. Gotta love the old Jeeps!

That’s fuckin crazy talk. Jeeps greatest era was easily 87-06 with amc’s 4.0 straight six. Far more reliable than the amc 360 was. Not to say jeep was necessarily bad beforehand, especially amc 258 straight six jeeps. Grand wagoneers and CJs are awesome.. I mean chrysler used to be good at one point. They pretty much saved jeep…. Then drove it into the ground in the early 2000s..
they were nice rig but all day every day old flat finder like 600 junkers or obs parakees or grad parkees lot time rebuild efi or add 4-5 speed rig is cheap easy nothing like old 4 cyl they crawl like goat sip gas all day
I forgot to mention about the electrical issues from AMC, they used very thin wires and this is a problem that I haven't found a solution to but the turn signal will in some cases not work, for my dad's it's not much of a problem because it's a dune truck but if you want to use it a lot you might as well find a alternative to the current fuse block if that problem is present and the duraspark is trash my dad got rid of his rights away and went with a distributor instead of that
Just what I needed on a Wednesday while home and sick on the couch! Strange enough I now have a hunger for a French dip sandwich…

Your're wrong about XJs. I am glad you saved a FSJ. JYD sent me.
I believe your ignition switch harness was melted due to the starter not disengaging and that probably also led to the switch failing
Reset the distributor. And check the timing. Just a thought.

I've always loved the Wagoneer! It's on my bucket list of vehicles to own 😁 Great find!
This was the exact vehicle my mom wanted to have in 86. It would have been the coolest ride in our suburb.

The old truck tool box there from the ford would that be for sale by chance ?
Sure! Send me an email at buildseason2023@gmail.com
I remember those trucks from 86 - a serious tough bomber rig. Well done on this - you won't be sorry once you get her done.
Those trucks had three weaknesses; rust, miles of vacuum hoses, and electrical gremlins. Outside of that, they are unstoppable!
I’ve had good luck either knocking a freeze plug out and putting a block heater in it or inline heater on the bottom coolant hose for adding heat to the engine block
Great job Steve! I knew you could do it!! Mike says you need to add more concrete so you don't tear up your grass. Lol
That starter looks like the same one as the Ford 351 for about 1980
Brake hoses can be obtained at a lot of places. Bjs off-road, Rockauto, Teamgrandwagoneer etc etc.
