Gigantisch!

What a gem! I lived in Romania back then, and seeing the trams and trolleybuses I rode on was great! I even photoed many of the same ones (including the double articulated trolleybus). You got some rare ones that werent photographed, including 7321! Now I think I need to go out and do something on my bus lol.

Yeah, this video is just full of surprises. Also, if you're wondering, this is my alt account, lol. But yeah, many surprises like #3001 being in construction, S21 being brand new, #192 in testing (the first tram with that type of construction, having 12 others follow it), #6041 with its displays, even #7091! :D

@@lucamihailmurafa What's weird, is that he took this video around the same time I took all my photos, and I never heard of him from the drivers and what not. So many he visted Vatra Luminoasa after I did. I wish I had more film but it was pricey doing that and developing lol...

    • @lucamihailmurafa

@@RipRoaringGarage Interesting.. He also visited Bucharest in 1996 and it's weird he wasn't really talked about back then. I saw a lot of images made in the same period when he was creating the video footage. I once saw an image of #6041 in the exact same place and time as in this video, so he probably wasn't alone. Professional cameras were bulky in 1998, so he couldn't really have carried 2 of them..

@@lucamihailmurafa No, not that big. I had, well, still have a Minolta full SLR (I forgot the model), with the detachable flash, and it fit in a normal camera bag. Sure, I had a back pack with rolls and rolls of film lol but the video cameras were a bit bigger. By 1998 you had the micro VHS tapes, also the digital tapes too although they were expensive. I still have a full VHS shoulder mounted cam corder, and that is big to lug around lol. Im curious if he will chime in and let us know (I mean, he uploaded recently so its not like a zombie channel, far from it)

@@RipRoaringGarage That's also true... hmmm.. well, I still really enjoy looking at how different Bucharest was almost... 23 years ago. Holy hell, 1998 was almost 23 years ago, time flies, lol. But yeah. I like the rare vehicles like #7091 and #7321, plus the rare shots of work trams and trams that were still in construction make this one of the most important videos made to preserve Bucharest's public transport into one little time capsule. It's brilliant.

nice. it seems that there were a lot of rathgebers. sadly only few survived and are used as service trams

That trams is an ex-Wiener Linien "Halbstarke" type car, but in the Wiener Linien yellow livery, which means it was a service tram. They were originally built by Ringhoffer Praha, and rebodied in the 1950s, but underneath they maintain the same components. In 1993/1994 it was donated to the RATB as a thank you for having our workshops restore old Austrian trams. I dont recall it ever run in passenger service, only on special occasions since only one of them existed in Bucharest.
After a while it was put out of order because the sole axle used journal boxes (similar to North American rolling stock in the old days) which meant that when lacking lubricant oil, it would overheat and seize itself, jamming any potential movement (or in cases in North America, causing severe derailments).
Eventually it was restored between 2010-2012 but they still forgot about the journal boxes and it seized again, and the RATB (now the STB) couldnt give two shits about fixing it as its been thin on money/underfunded for 40 years by this point and their priority is to keep at least 50% of its current fleet of trams running, even attempting to extend their lives somehow. So i doubt we will see the Lohner "Halbstarke" in service for a while, even if the repair only consists on spending a bit more money on maintaining the journal boxes.

It has a paint defect since it was new. THe paint stained and reacted bad with the graphite grease, so it had to be redone. Also, I think that was when they removed the mechanism for changing the platforms for the left hand doors. I remember it when that still worked.

@@redx069 I do know that around 1999 it was running without the bi directional capability. I took photos and ask the driver if he could show me (i knew him and was very friendly), but he showed me how the button didnt do anything, no warnings, etc. He was a younger guy. Back then there were a few guys like that, including the driver for 7454 that adored that bus.

@@joachimkaddatz8191 Still, Im so happy to see these as well and look forward to anything else you might post. Especially in these times, its not easy to make somebody smile, but you sure did! One day Im hoping to recreate that double articulated bus...and while that seems like a lofty goal, compared to bringing over a Dac from Romania to the US it doesnt seem all that out of reach. Also, I loved the site. I spent waaaaay too much time there lol!
