This is my favorite symphony of all time.
Wonderful. This evening will be dedicated to Schnittke, one of the greates composers of last century. I do listen to him over and over again to detect always new,finely hidden hints to "classical" music. To me he is the "modern renaissance composer".

This is fast becoming my favourite symphony. Here we hear what it's like to know that we will soon be dead.
Perhaps I struggle differently than most - not better, worse, more, less - just different. I find this symphony spiritually uplifting and far more mundane in its powerful expressions of the here and now. The ending is a positive ray of ordinary hope.

Schnittke's soul laid bare: iridescent and ashen, gasping for airing, and bleeding indefatigable love from every vein. Who could not be overwhelmed with compassion at this music? And yet so many have only "Shostakovich" on their lips. How they have missed the point!

This symphony is the first work of Schnittke I ever heard. The repetition of the initial motive is haunting. IIt has nothing to do with similar scores as Bolero of Ravel or 7th symphony of Shostakovitch. Here, the distended malody repeats without any accompaniment - or so few. It is a feeling of loneliness and distress which emegres from this beginning. This ostinato is by far the most dramatic, since we feel that the drama is in the heart of the composer.
We feel the inability to write a good first part for a symphony. 8+ minutes of nothingness.

Шнитке космически велик и могуч, феерически прекрасен.Как он это делает, фантастика!И при том, что он современен, он до конца не открыт и не понят, но с другой стороны, - " вершины таланта художника всегда скрыты облаками неопределенности и сомнения".
Симфония потрясающая! А если ещё учесть, что писал он её после 2-го инсульта, будучи полупарализованным, это вообще становится непостижимым!

@@AlexAlex-oq2so судя по всему, вы ни хрена не понимаете в музыке, и поэтому ваше мнение меня мало интересует, очень мягко выражаясь! )) Вам невозможно объяснить, описать то "транседентное", метафизическое ощущение, которое рождает эта музыка! Ведь здесь вполне, даже явственно слышны сопоставления образов нашего грубого, реального физического мира и мира иррационального, ирреального, "тонкого", метафизического (называйте как хотите). А в 5-й, последней части только совершенно "глухой" и бесчувственный человек не услышит (и даже не увидит) здесь образ души, воспаряющей в эмпиреи - в другой мир, в другую, более "тонкую" реальность!
И, кстати, я - атеист, но всё равно уловил, услышал, "увидел" эти образы, которые как мне кажется были заложены композитором в этой симфонии! И у меня есть основания так считать, поскольку Альфред Шнитке был в то время на грани жизни и смерти, и неизбежно думал о бренности материального мира и о посмертной судьбе Души, Духа...
Он сам тогда говорил: "мое тело как-бы осталось в этом мире, а сознание уже как-будто бы было "там" (в другом мире)".

Formidable. Cette journée dans mon antre, sera consacrée à Schnittke, à mon avis l'un des grands compositeurs du siècle passé. Je l'écoute encore et encore pour détecter toujours de nouvelles astuces, finement cachés de la "musique classique". Pour moi, il est l'un des architecte sonore majeur de la Renaissance musicale moderne.
Je suis bien d'accord, Schnittke était un compositeur merveilleux mais tellement sous-estimé! Pour moi, c'est le plus grand!
@@kissofflesh Schnittke était quand même parmi les compositeurs contemporains soviétiques l'un des seuls qui avaient une certaine notoriété dans son pays à son époque. Gubaidulina et Denisov par exemple étaient complètement inconnus et ont d'ailleurs été condamnés par l'Union des compositeurs. Pourtant je les préfère à Schnittke pour ma part, mais chacun ses goûts.
Wonderful music...
Like the requiem mass by Artyomov this wonderful symphony seems to resonate with the landscape and spirit of Russia itself. Like Artyomov's piece it is both eerie and beautiful at the same time. It is drenched in old age and mysticism but seems also to offer hope. Its great beauty does not dazzle you straight away but rather builds up inside you slowly but undeniably.

This was written only two years after my birth. I didn't know up until recently that symphonies and other classical forms were still alive in our days. Exciting.
Same. I feel like in classical music, people are excessively concentrated in the past, and contemporary music is quite neglected. I FEEL that, I may be very wrong.

La música es un ruido sin sentido hasta que encuentra una mente receptora. Me ha gustado bastante la obra, sobre todo el final del primer movimiento (a partir del minuto 05:30) y el segundo movimiento. El final de la obra es interesantísimo.
tThe first movement is rahter impressive. It is an ostinao on a chromatic theme. But it hzs nothing to do with such pieces as Bolero or Chostakovitch's 7° symphony. Here, the mood is much more desolate and lonely. This feeling of loneliness in a barren landscape is the overarching mood of the whole symphony.

There are three works in which the ostinao is widely used: the Bolero of Ravl for chorgraphic reasons, the 7y=th symphony of Chostakovitch for collective dramatic reasons, and this symphony of Schnittke for personal dramatic reasons.
The opening is some sort of grotesque and beautiful homage to mahler and shostakovich followed by brahms a few minutes in. Back to shosta with the horns, then mahler, then shosta, then mahler. The underlying agony is a perversion of Mahlers 3rd where the earth is groaning it's way awake. The composer has turned it into a dionysian waking as opposed to apollonian. The start of the second movement is ordinary human drama until the mahlerian gods appear in mixed guise, a nietschean blend of apollo and dionysus. The human accepts the challenge and starts out his day. The third movement is ... oh this is a symphony by alfred schnittke. Never mind.
Schnittke is incredible and this symphony in particular is one of the most complex and dark works i have ever heard.Although i can't seem to find other symphonies of him other than this one,the 3rd and the 4th.Will you bee uploading the others like the 7th,the 6th,5th?

if it makes any sense i kinda hear schnittke doing with Shostakovitch and Mahler what Schoenberg does with Brahms, though here I will state my opinion (and others may violently disagree) that what Schoenberg does with Brahms is an order of genius unsurpassed by any other composer? i am reserving the right to qualify, modify or plain reject this comment at any time!

i don't find the opening as desultory as some of you, i even find it a touch playful, even wistful. And quite frankly the first movement evokes more Bruckner-Mahler-Brahms than early 20th Century bathos ala Shostakovitch or the ephemeral qualities of Ravel-Debussy. I hear lots of, lots of Mahler's 3rd in mood and instrumentation ... The transition to the harp or concertina or whatever those instruments are is both idiotic and genius at the same time!

The truly difficult thing is to write sunny music like Handel and Mozart or Andriessen or Ned Rorem or even Tchaikovsky (he is really great no matter what althe haters say . Some Schnittke is hard to keep an interest in like Wuorinen but this is a winner .

Dexter Boo This too was my first impression, as I heard it 15 years ago. I was somewhat dissappointed of the emptyness and bareness of Schnittke's late music (after his strokes), especially since I admired his 1st Symphony, 1st Concerto Grosso or the Faust-Cantata.
This has changed considerably. Of course, If you expect the typical (for Schnittke) dense textures, contradicting musical levels and styles, put together by force and bad taste, your patience is massively chellenged. This music sounds boring, claustrophobic, inspired by a depressing breeze of nothingness. Believe me - it's just the wrong kind of listening. This music is extremely honest, personal, authentic like never before - it's not hiding in artificial bombast and intimidating amounts of complexity. Schnittke reduces his style to a degree of nakedness - he indeed isn't wearing any clothes. All in all this symphony is his 'Death and transfiguration'-piece, but not in a Straussian but a Webernian manner.
