why gratitude journals don’t work

  • as someone who practices gratitude every single day, i found that i couldn't get into gratitude journals/prompts. "write 3 things you're grateful for today" - day after day. my mind instantly thinks of the same things and it kind of defeats the purpose of journaling.
on top of that, it's tough for me to set aside the time to write out what i'm grateful for. so cozy k, aka kennedy, shared in a recent play-through that this is the same deal with her. so instead of doing the journal prompts, she uses times of frustration (like doing mundane housekeep) as a way to turn it into a practice of gratitude. annoyed you have to do the dishes? be grateful you have clean, running water. annoyed you have laundry to do? be grateful you have access to machines that do most of the work for you.
gratitude doesn't have to be expressed with pen on paper. it can be the simple act of broadening your awareness over the little things.

This definitely works! When you think about it, your subconscious is your journal and everything you internalize is recorded 💯❤️

Do you have any advice for work? Been feeling miserable in my job and I want to quit everyday. Finding it difficult to be grateful aside from the paycheck. It isn’t a small task to go so I’m trying to find something that will work since I spend majority of my life there at the moment. Trying to be grateful for it makes me feel resentful

hey liv 💖 thanks for sharing that. i know there’s a lot of people who can related to you and i’m definitely no exception. i used to enjoy every place i worked at and eventually felt dread every single morning to go. i would be miserable *going* to work, be miserable *at* work then get excited 30 minutes before my shift was over, get home, and feel miserable that i have to get up and do it all over again
if it’s tough to get out of your job, you gotta find things that’ll get you excited in those moments when you’re not working.
don’t go on social media and watch things for hours. do something fulfilling. do something *new* that you don’t normally do or haven’t done before. try knitting, cooking/baking something you’ve never made before, watch a local play, do a cooking class, read a new book (this is one that reignited my love for reading!). having an activity to look forward to will do a whole lot in balancing that miserable dread.
two: make a plan and get the heck outta there!
you can be grateful for your paycheque and work on changing your work environment at the same time. i was scared to leave every single one of my jobs, but the other side is so much more rewarding. take the time to think of what would you do almost every day. do research and see how you can make money doing it. save money so you can support yourself during this shift. but you have to conquer the fear of leaving
three: hella cheesy but you gotta believe in yourself. we stick with our jobs because we’re afraid of things not working out. but you know what they say; the greatest things in life are waiting on the other side of fear. believe that you are more than your job. if you don’t want to be miserable 5/7 days, every single week for the rest of your life, figure out what makes you happy and find a way to make a living doing it 💖🙏🏽
sorry that was an essay and a half but it flowed right out of me and my thumbs couldn’t stop 😂 but i wish you so well and as a stranger, i believe in you!

@@ellie-jane I think some people are just the opposite of spreading the joy.
I can't think of any other logical reason.
