  • Quick and Easy Guide: Smoke Testing an N55 Engine Common Issues to Look Out For:
In this video I show you how to set up an N55 for a smoke test of the intake and engine. Performed a smoke test is important after a big repair to make sure there are no unmetered air leaks present which can lead to P0171 and P0174 unmetered air leak codes. Air leaks also reduces fuel economy and can lead to misfires in the engine.

Great video explaining the smoke test & tester. I'm a true DIY shade tree mechanic and made my own little contraption from no less, TH-cam. Handy little diagnosis tool. Keep the videos coming on the Bimmers/Bemmers. I have one of these N55's. Can you look into how to notch the intake manifold so you can get that 1 OFH bolt off without removing the intake? I watched a video on here some place that showed it but now can't find it. Greetings from that Old Jarhead in WNC

Thank you! I have never notched the intake but an easy truck is to remove the intake boots and just pull it back a bit which gives you access. Then drop it back down. The intake gaskets usually do not need to be replaced.

I always find a port after the MAF sensor. God, I hate Norma fittings and other plastic parts in the engine compartment.

I have an EWG N55 with 115k still on the original valve cover and PCV. I wanted run a quick test by slowing removing the oil filter on a fully warmed up engine at idle and I when removed the car I felt air being sucked in the crankcase with with a "psssshh" sound then engine idled rough for a few seconds until I replaced the cap. I drove the car the next day, there was no CEL but I noticed about max 2 teaspoon of oil on the driveway in only one spot.
I typically don't burn any oil between OCI, no rough idle, no smoke, no CEL and this engine pulls hard since it has MPPK retrofitted.
Btw the valve cover and gasket are scheduled for replacement since I notice some oil sweating in passenger side of the gasket towards the back.
    Any advice on that?

Hello, Some engine vacuum is normal. When the PCV is bad, the cap is VERY difficult to remove. And with the cap off, it would be like a big air leak causing the idle change. Sounds normal.

If you are referring to an issue with that valve cover it makes a whistle type noise

Question for you... I bought the Ancel S3000 from Amazon. Worked great for a day. The next day it wouldn't produce any smoke. I assume the heating element burned out. I returned it for a replacement.
The one I got, the knob didn't work. Probably didn't get connected internally on the assembly line. So I returned that one.
Is it worth one more try or is there another you'd recommend in that price range?

Absolutely! The one I have is going strong and I have not had any issues with it. I even have lent it put to friend and just did again today. I am going to be giving one away as well soon in my review on the Ancel 3000 that will be in a future video. Maybe you will win it!

@@AskTheCarExperts actually I ordered another from Amazon today. Interesting thing about those, they always have some kind of freebie deals. Last time I got a carrying case and battery tester free with it.
This time I got an ODBII reader (I already have more than I know what to do with) and a snazzier battery tester for free.
