As an owner of an N55 BMW and someone who greatly prefers it over the N54, I made this video to explain some of the hardware limitations that users encounter frequently which hinder power gains. Turbo & fueling being the two biggest factors from everything I have read, thankfully there are solutions to both of those :)

As an N55 owner, I prefer the reliability over the power gains of an n54. I’m really not drag racing every commute so anything between 400-450 is just good enough for the car.
x2 i had an n54 335i and EVERYTHING broke on it. N55 2014+ version is vastly improved. metal water pump. no fuel pump recall on mine. m235i now.. and power.. lol im at 380 fbo mhd s1 great daily driver
Rei N55 is super reliable and if you get a EWG version it is essentially a matured product hence the new generation of B engines. This means this product is at the pinnacle of its development and now bmw is working on a different foundation. Moving forward, if you notice on select cars bmw utilizes 2 water pumps, this solves the WP issue, and you see fairly any rod issues. I can’t even find more than 1 mention of blown rods in my car and it was due to owner issues. The n55 is a great engjne
Here you go. N54 has forged crank and rods w/ cast iron pistons N55 has cast crank, rod, and pistons. Only the x4 m40i and m2 n55's have forged everything, and larger factory turbo. They even share the same forged rods as the s55. Both engines are open deck. All variants of n54 and n55 can make the same hp/tq unopened with bolt ons. N55 cast internals have been proven to hold up to the same power numbers as the n54. Both stock rods fail at 700tq, including s55. The punchines/"more power" feel of the n54 comes from the true twins, simply because they move more air. You will not get into big power numbers with twins, you have to do a single conversion. N54's also sound more crappy not only because of the twin turbo setup, but because of the true dual exhaust. You can clean up the sound by opting for a single pipe setup with or w/o resonators like the a80 supras. You can get an even better sound after pairing it with a single turbo. N55 has the single already but a true dual exhaust. Go single and you'll hear an even cleaner/more aggressive "2j" sound. In order to gain big power from either of these engines you have to close the deck and rebuild it with thicker forged pistons/rods/arp ardware. This is the same formula with open deck honda engines. The only closed deck inline 6 blocks are the s55 and b58. B58 is the strongest stock block because the cyl walls are coated similar to the GTR VR38. 1000hp n54/55 blocks have to be converted. The only differences in limitations between the two is R&D. Since the n54 has been on the market for longer, there are more complete kits and aftermarket support for them. DocRace, RK, and Motive are arguably the leaders in the development of parts and tuning. DocRace has a top mount n55 kit available, Turner Motorsport has a better looking engine cover (because the oem n55's one are ugly, all that's left for the cool looking factor is a front face intake manifold. DocRace will probably be the first to make that too. Once the n55 equipped BMW's drop lower in price and R&D reaches the same time as n54, you're going to see the community shift.

My buddies with N54s are always broken down. They've driven my 2014 F30 N55, stage 2 Bootmod3, are blown away by how fast it is. I'm in Medical sales and drive it all over Arizona, have around 50k miles on it with all my mods/tune. Never had a single problem with it, just your basic maintenance.
Only thing forged in N54 was the crankshaft. Failed to note the N54 has piezoelectric injectors vs. the solenoid injectors in the N55. Many improvements in big end bearings, windage control, cooling pump regulation and oil separation on the N55. Note to poster: Under hood air is hotter and less dense than ambient air. Thus power isreduced by the DME.
I'm running a custom map on my 435i with upgraded FMIC and DP and managed to get around 490hp and 780nm with stock turbo and HP-LPFP. Really happy with the result and no problems with the engine even with now 180k km on it. A really great engine if you maintain it right.
@@Brad0st sure it has an MHD tune in combination with xHP Flashtool. Then I hit up wedgeperformenceracing and they made a cutome map via runs in 3rd and 4th gear while logging. They tweaked the map a couple times and I had finally those results. It was tuned to the max, more boost would result in a Railpressure drop, so thats the first thing which was limiting the power to under 500 hp. Also had a custome made exhaust system with only a resonator, decat downpipe, upgraded TMAP sensor form the N20, fully upgraded intake/chagrgepipe, upgraded BDV and upgraded FMIC. Probably forgot some things. But yea could keep up with a Stage 2+ 440i and destroyed M4s.
Me too I love my N55 2015 M 335i and it's fast. I don't know what this guy in the video is talking about. His set up is probably with cheap mods that isn't producing quality high power IJS. I"ve seen videos where they got the N55 up to 800 to 1000hp
It is EASIER and Cheaper to make power on an N54, but it is ludicrous to think you can't make high power on an N55 which is an all improved version of the N54, that gave birth to the S55 on the M3/M4... I had both and can tell you the N55's torque is unmatched by the N54 in stock form or even when you tune both with MHD and stock turbos. The N55 is a better engine period, just like the B58 is better than the N55..
Just incase anyone visits this. N54 never came with forged internals, maybe crank... but the rods and pistons was debunked on bimmer post. From what I'm understanding, it's literally the twin turbos
I got my M-packaged 08' 135i right when they came out, and sold it for my 15' M235i. Both first and only owner of the cars. Pretty much fell on the floor laughing when you mentioned the N54's advanced fuel system/pumps. BMW owned up to its issue, and slapped 120k mile warranty on N54's fuel pumps, so I respect them for that. Nevertheless, I was at about my 6th fuel pump by the time I got the M235i. Such a headache.
That was the point of the N54s small twin turbos as well, but the cost to outfit the engine with twin turbos is more money than a single twin scroll turbo setup. Only reason they did it was to save money

I had a 2009 335 Tune and FBO and now 2013 335, tune and full fatback exhaust. From my experience, the n54 is a powerful and fun engine, gaining so much power from simple bolt ons. However, I did have many issue including high pressure fuel pump going bad, and turbo issue. I traded it for the 2013 before hitting 100k. The n55 is a lot smoother, but not as fast as the n54 with similar tunes. No issues so far and I am hitting 75k. I can see that car going more than 100k without problems. N54 is best but be prepared for unreliability and headaches
As someone who came from buying 1000$ shitboxes like old civics and fords with 0-60 in yes seconds, i was absolutely perplexed when i got to do a test drive on an f30 335i xdrive... its a whole other world going from sub 100hp cars to something with 300hp... i couldn't fathom what i had experienced and immediatly bought the car.. it didnt take long before i started to venture into mods. i'm not a mechanic by any means, but working on my own cars and doing maintenance is something i've always done since i ever had my first car. i never had this joy of buying parts online before, and installing them myself.. that's when i found out about flash tuning and again, changed what i really thought cars where capable of.. after installing a blow off, intake, intercooler, charge pipes, and fuel components, i went straight for a downpipe and got a mhd stage 2+.. i'm certain the car feels like it has around 450whp and i feel like i can gap any car or supercar (just that greatness feeling lmao) and honestly i absolutely love the damn thing.. its sharp, fast and nimble.. more than what i need, more than whats needed to even drive on the streets... its something i take pride in, coming from shitboxes to something i built by my own hands and makes me feel tremendously happy.. no joke, building this car in months it took, eased off on my depression, and driving it like a hoon is it's own experience to cure it.. we dont need 1000hp big turbo cars like everyone on youtube or social media is doing.. just find a good platform, mod it and tune it to your taste.. drive like you stole it (responsibly) and have fun, with the 300 or 400hp that the car has.. it's way more than enough. cheers
I have the N55 I did the intake and charge pipe with mhd stage 1. I recently bought my intercooler and catless downpipe. I'm going to install them at the same time with mhd stage 2+ so I'm not buying 2 tunes. What kinda power do you guys think I'll make from that?
Yeah I'm pretty close to the limit with my stage 2+ 400awhp n55 but you really don't need more power for a daily, since upgrading from stage 1 I rarely go WOT from a stop anymore cuz it gets up to 60 pretty quick at 3.7 sec and I still get to make my friend jelly that his brand new m340i won't beat my little F32 lol -Edit: I'm pretty much at the limit without doing major drivetrain upgrades, F Chassis AWD can't handle that much HP stock
Yeah I have a 335xi as well. The 8hp50(mines a '15) handles power just fine,,especially if you reflash(same with earlier 8hp45) BUT the dang 180mm diffs that are welded and open really limit power handling. It is possible to have lsd's installed but stupid expensive. If I ever get to install an 8hp70 then I'll look into seeing if I cam sntall the 210 diffs front and rear with a bolt-on ring gear(to send in and install an lsd on the stock diff it's around $2400ish per)
You mentioned only the EWG N55’s vs N54’s but forgot about PWG N55’s like in a late model e82 135i or e90 335i when talking about fueling. The short on our systems is the LPFP, which is already a stronger system than the EWG cars. Just like the N54, the PWG N55 HPFP is the stronger of the two N55’s, and most of the time is good for E60 blends without port injection. Plus a bonus is that it’s way cheaper to upgrade a LPFP than a HPFP! (Unless you factor in having to replace it around 120k if you’re outside of their class action lawsuit timeline for the HPFP)😉
I own a 13' pre-July (if you know you know) F30 335i Sedan and my car was in the middle of the development stage. It's PWG. They switched to EWG in July. The wastegate difference alone will allow EWGs to be able to take 20-40 more hp more than a PWG car would. They also had the DME locked until May (dont' quote me on this) of 2013. HUGE differences that people don't realize until they start modding their cars.
Idk what limitations you’re referring to regarding the later n55 iterations. They’ve became more robust and tuner friendly. For starters adding an ewg as opposed too pneumatic. Also forged crank and rods as opposed too cast.
I had a 14' N55 in a 335i - had the dealer install the Dinan stage 2 tune. Within 1000 miles it was in the dealer countless times with issues. Went into limp mode x times, blew the intake pipe twice. Needles to say I traded the car soon after was just a headache.
12 years and 196000 kms and my n54 is still going strong making 407 whp and i give it hell... only thing i changed is my injectors to index 12. Original hpfp, original turbos bit of rattle tho, original water pump. Full bolt ons of course and custom tune water methanol injection.. still not bad for a old motor. Long live the mighty N54.

Stock Turbo (EWG) N55's are running mid 11's. 99% of custom single turbo N54 cars are 11 second cars so how much more hp an N54 can make doesn't mean shit really. After 13 years there are still only a handful of N54's running 9's and barely. And there are not many 10 second N54's either when you consider how many were built.

I’m in the process of buying a 135i N55 having come from a Chevy Cruze with a blown head gasket and I’m sure the N55 will blow my mind. the exhausting pursuit of the “best version” of a bargain sports car feels pointless. The N55 may not be as “tunable” as some other model, but it does have that fancy screen and swanky rotary dial at a price that I can afford. That alone is worth way more to me than the ability to get more power out of expensive bolt on parts that I would never use to begin with because it would void my warranty anyway.
The n55 is a highly tuner friendly engine, especially the n55b30O0(m235i) and the n55b30T0(m2) due to their forged pistons, crankshaft, and additional oil cooling. Upgrade the charge pipe and you’re good to 400whp, upgrade the intercooler and you’re good to about 450whp before you start getting fuel cutting issues.
N54 vs N55 blown WAY out of proportion. So N54 makes a little more power on stock turbo. Ok. N55 maxed out stock turbo still fast af compared to other cars. Then, just turbo upgrade the N55 if you want ultimate power. 🤷🏼♂️
A twin scroll miminc a sequential twin turbo. I belive n54 are parallel turbo setup. So not exactly the same feeling. N55 would be way more linear for the same total output. Thus faster.
I think BMW figured out that you can get a N54 335i, put some money and take over some E9X M3s. So they built their N55 so you can’t take over their F8X M3/M4. Now, explain N55 differences between E and F chassis. Even their down pipes are different!!
This kind of makes sense. However, in the used market I don’t really see the advantage of buying an N54, I only see disadvantages. The N54 has so many problems that it isn’t worth it to buy one used, even if your shooting for 500+ HP. It’s very likely you’ll need to upgrade the N54 turbos, along with various other issues. The cost you’ll spend fixing it will exceed the cost to simply upgrade the N55 turbo & fuel system, and you’ll have a more reliable, newer car.

What you’re saying about the twin scroll is kinda off, a twin scroll is actually better than a twin because how it works is it dynamically adjusts at different RPM’s one gate is larger than the other so you get appropriate boost throughout the rpms.
Alpina still makes their B3/B4 by taking N55 and putting Mitsubishi turbos from N54 (+ forged crankshaft, larger intercooler, NGK spark plugs, aplina ECU and TCU flash). So current Alpina B3/B4 is basically a N55 + N54 turbos, it makes 440hp and it's a stock car with all warranties

In what world is 480 ish whp slow for a daily street car ? I own a "11 e92 paired with the dct (yes it has the n55, the pwg version) . Pure 500 turbo, lpfp and hpfp + bolt ons and it makes 480 up to 6.5k rpm on 95 octane , if i switch to the e50 map it makes around 530-545 whp depending on how warm it's outside 🤷
Only problem I’ve had with my 2016 f22 is offer putting the JB4 tube on it is that it eats through charge pipe I’m in my 3rd in less than a year (it was fine stock) and I’m hoping to get an aluminum one instead.
with all due respect that was a very foolish decision to tune before upgrading ur chargepipe, chargepipe is the first thing you need to do before anything else with these n55s, i gotta ‘16 m235i myself and did the cp and FMIC not long after preventative purposes
N55 with the ZF 8 speed. That ZF transmission is incredibly quick. Even stock. Throw an XHP flash tune on it and that car will be/feel like a little rocket. My wife owns a m235 and it’s the most funnest car to drive, she won’t let me tune it but for some reason I enjoy driving it A LOT more than my full bolt E90 335i making 450WHp. Sometimes I feel that it’s just as quick. Wish she’d let me full bolt on it I could only imagine how fun yours is bro
not entirely true. Certain vairants of N55 such as in the M235i & M2 got forged crank and rods as well. The N55 in the M2 also has the valvetronic, bearings, and pistons from the S55 as well.

good point! I think it mainly comes down to price at the moment. Many N55 powered cars have seen significant price reductions in the secondhand market.

I have a bit of confusion here. Don’t s54 owners go single turbo for big power? The shop in Nashville 2 years ago specialized in that. Isn’t it the same reason people ditch the twin RB for a big single RB?
@@MRBD18140 If you car is built before 3/12 it can run up to e50 with stock hpfp. Its because those models share the same HPFP as the n54 did. Upgraded LPFP is still recommended
hey now.. no hating. sure our crank isn't as strong.. but maybe us n55 owners want longevity not raw power.. 400whp is still a lot of fun. twin scrolls are actually better for the engine. see here why. th-cam.com/video/T7JTRRlSEYI/w-d-xo.html the important "why" is at 2:50 exhaust scavenging and negative vs positive pressure in the exhaust manifold, which has net affect on the engine itself. Hence why twin scrolls rock.
BMW forged some internals of the n54 because they weren't too sure about the twin turbo setup. It had its issues for sure but it's a GREAT motor that won many awards for years and was still being used even ten years later in some models. Bottom line is that they came out with the n55 to mostly save money and for better fuel efficiency.
That's just false... they added valvetronic and a dct transmission to the n55. Not sure how that's "saving money." N55 has 1 less turbo. That's it. It's twin scroll is more responsive, produces more torque at lower rpms, produces less heat, and overall reduces failure points. There was nothing cheaper about the n55. Twinscrolls are more expensive.
@@brendenbanks9293 The extras of having a twin turbo setup are costly and forging internals make it overall more expensive. The n54 is MUCH more tunable than the n55 and had a LOT more easy power gain potential.. that is well known.

i havent with E85. I raced him a while back with his E60 FBO N54 when I was on pump gas and i kept up somewhat, but i havent gone against his newest 335i

I have owned an N54 for 6 years and now I currently own a B58 and a N55. If you want power: B58 > N54 > N55….if you want reliability : B58 > N55 > N54…..Basically B58 is king, then between N54 and N55 you need to choose between power and reliability.
N55 is a reliable and simple n54 that uses better tech to get same outcome with less. If you don’t mind everything breaking and you want over 600 whp then go ahead
The reliability and sound of the n55 far outweighs the HP difference. Most people don't mod and try to squeeze out every ounce of hp from the turbos when they buy car anyway.
And again, I mentioned this in your last video, all N55's have forged rods, the same exact rods as in the S55. Also my N55 has the same fuel system as the N54 and at 108k I am on the original hpfp.
Scott Redmond I will have to go digging but to my understanding the n55 doesn’t have forged internals and the n54 does. One is open deck the other is closed. And the turbos to me do not make a difference since a lot of people go single turbo anyway.

There’s a lot of misinformed people out there who never taken an n55 apart but telling people about the engine and they don’t know themselves. I took 3 n55’s apart and all of them had forged internals.
Scott Redmond I have done pistons kits in 2 F30 EWG N55’s both of them had forged crankshafts, even 90’s Honda B series D series H and F series engines had forged crankshafts I doubt bmw would skimp out on something so common these days.
thevernonposse you sure it wasn’t vanos, n55 may have rod issues if people don’t follow oil priming procedure when changing oil filter housing gasket. Also long oil intervals doesn’t help.
E82 and E9X debuted in europe in 2004 and the N54 debuted in 2006! thats why the pre lci cars in 2007 have a different chime because thats the chime from 04-07!
@JustLuuchi well..... b58 wont run power reliably if crank hub isnt upgraded. So no difference really. Theres guy on youtube doing 682 whp with n55 unopened. There's running big power reliably.....and then there's abusing a car. You can blow a b58 to pieces if you drive it in the correct manner for that....🤷♂️

They damn near hold the same if it’s not a manual no dsg over 600hp m5 comps need clutches to do over 700 cause the trans can’t hold. Everyone just capping when it comes to b58. And I’ve seen n55 make around 500-600 reliably anything over that though Is a different story!
magictw77 the B58B30 engine has been already out since early 2016 in the M140i, M240i, 340i, and 440i and the G10 740i phasing out the N55B30 all together. The version inside in the early models was the B58B30M0. the Supra used the B58B30C which is different from the B58B30O1 that the Z4 uses. All the variances are based on how the engine produces its power for it specific platform it is being put in as well as emissions. for 2020 all non sport BMW’s (G-series chassis) will be using the M1 variant of the B58 for emission compliances.
@@usernamealreadytaken770 It's not too bad, the actual pump is awkward to get to, and all you have to do is cut the flange on the new pump. The HDP5 evo pump is easier to fit than the HDP6, due to the angle of the connector of the 6, you have to dremel a small bit of plastic from the inlet manifold. You're not from Louth are you mate btw?
I have a 2011 E82, with full bolt ons meth, and stage 1 turbo, I did 414 hp and 522 tq on a dyno but that was in the summer heat of Texas so it was heat soaked so I think it would've hit about 450 hp
Big misconception.. all n55s have forged connecting rods. many forms have confirmed that. Its the earlier models that have cast cranks. The wear point on earlier n55s is not the rods but the cranks. When we see failure its cranks splitting, not bent or snapped rods.
was it 700hp at the wheels? its also important to understand what kind of dyno it was on since these figures can be manipulated very easily. But i do agree with you the N55 can make pretty high power!
I’m hitting near 500whp on my f21 m135i n55 and I can have it more up than this. They do over 650whp on these engines without internals. All the n54 55 b58 all need big changes to make great power, a turbo upgrade and hpfp the right fuel and bingo they all do it. They get to certain point and all will break and need internals for big big power
You can retrofit the b58 HPFP for pretty cheap if you find them used under $500 or brand new for $1000. Also Spool Performance is coming out with a HPFP for the f series n55 for under $1000 and beta testing already looks promising. The release of the pump is said to be a few weeks away can't wait 🤗

Moving forward, if you notice on select cars bmw utilizes 2 water pumps, this solves the WP issue, and you see fairly any rod issues. I can’t even find more than 1 mention of blown rods in my car and it was due to owner issues. The n55 is a great engjne

N54 has forged crank and rods w/ cast iron pistons
N55 has cast crank, rod, and pistons.
Only the x4 m40i and m2 n55's have forged everything, and larger factory turbo. They even share the same forged rods as the s55.
Both engines are open deck.
All variants of n54 and n55 can make the same hp/tq unopened with bolt ons.
N55 cast internals have been proven to hold up to the same power numbers as the n54.
Both stock rods fail at 700tq, including s55.
The punchines/"more power" feel of the n54 comes from the true twins, simply because they move more air.
You will not get into big power numbers with twins, you have to do a single conversion.
N54's also sound more crappy not only because of the twin turbo setup, but because of the true dual exhaust.
You can clean up the sound by opting for a single pipe setup with or w/o resonators like the a80 supras. You can get an even better sound after pairing it with a single turbo.
N55 has the single already but a true dual exhaust. Go single and you'll hear an even cleaner/more aggressive "2j" sound.
In order to gain big power from either of these engines you have to close the deck and rebuild it with thicker forged pistons/rods/arp ardware. This is the same formula with open deck honda engines.
The only closed deck inline 6 blocks are the s55 and b58. B58 is the strongest stock block because the cyl walls are coated similar to the GTR VR38. 1000hp n54/55 blocks have to be converted.
The only differences in limitations between the two is R&D. Since the n54 has been on the market for longer, there are more complete kits and aftermarket support for them. DocRace, RK, and Motive are arguably the leaders in the development of parts and tuning. DocRace has a top mount n55 kit available, Turner Motorsport has a better looking engine cover (because the oem n55's one are ugly, all that's left for the cool looking factor is a front face intake manifold. DocRace will probably be the first to make that too. Once the n55 equipped BMW's drop lower in price and R&D reaches the same time as n54, you're going to see the community shift.

My buddies with N54s are always broken down. They've driven my 2014 F30 N55, stage 2 Bootmod3, are blown away by how fast it is. I'm in Medical sales and drive it all over Arizona, have around 50k miles on it with all my mods/tune. Never had a single problem with it, just your basic maintenance.

Only thing forged in N54 was the crankshaft.
Failed to note the N54 has piezoelectric injectors vs. the solenoid injectors in the N55. Many improvements in big end bearings, windage control, cooling pump regulation and oil separation on the N55.
Note to poster: Under hood air is hotter and less dense than ambient air. Thus power isreduced by the DME.

I'm running a custom map on my 435i with upgraded FMIC and DP and managed to get around 490hp and 780nm with stock turbo and HP-LPFP. Really happy with the result and no problems with the engine even with now 180k km on it. A really great engine if you maintain it right.

@@Brad0st sure it has an MHD tune in combination with xHP Flashtool. Then I hit up wedgeperformenceracing and they made a cutome map via runs in 3rd and 4th gear while logging. They tweaked the map a couple times and I had finally those results. It was tuned to the max, more boost would result in a Railpressure drop, so thats the first thing which was limiting the power to under 500 hp. Also had a custome made exhaust system with only a resonator, decat downpipe, upgraded TMAP sensor form the N20, fully upgraded intake/chagrgepipe, upgraded BDV and upgraded FMIC. Probably forgot some things. But yea could keep up with a Stage 2+ 440i and destroyed M4s.

It is EASIER and Cheaper to make power on an N54, but it is ludicrous to think you can't make high power on an N55 which is an all improved version of the N54, that gave birth to the S55 on the M3/M4... I had both and can tell you the N55's torque is unmatched by the N54 in stock form or even when you tune both with MHD and stock turbos. The N55 is a better engine period, just like the B58 is better than the N55..

I got my M-packaged 08' 135i right when they came out, and sold it for my 15' M235i. Both first and only owner of the cars. Pretty much fell on the floor laughing when you mentioned the N54's advanced fuel system/pumps. BMW owned up to its issue, and slapped 120k mile warranty on N54's fuel pumps, so I respect them for that. Nevertheless, I was at about my 6th fuel pump by the time I got the M235i. Such a headache.

I had a 2009 335 Tune and FBO and now 2013 335, tune and full fatback exhaust. From my experience, the n54 is a powerful and fun engine, gaining so much power from simple bolt ons. However, I did have many issue including high pressure fuel pump going bad, and turbo issue. I traded it for the 2013 before hitting 100k. The n55 is a lot smoother, but not as fast as the n54 with similar tunes. No issues so far and I am hitting 75k. I can see that car going more than 100k without problems. N54 is best but be prepared for unreliability and headaches

As someone who came from buying 1000$ shitboxes like old civics and fords with 0-60 in yes seconds, i was absolutely perplexed when i got to do a test drive on an f30 335i xdrive... its a whole other world going from sub 100hp cars to something with 300hp... i couldn't fathom what i had experienced and immediatly bought the car.. it didnt take long before i started to venture into mods. i'm not a mechanic by any means, but working on my own cars and doing maintenance is something i've always done since i ever had my first car. i never had this joy of buying parts online before, and installing them myself.. that's when i found out about flash tuning and again, changed what i really thought cars where capable of.. after installing a blow off, intake, intercooler, charge pipes, and fuel components, i went straight for a downpipe and got a mhd stage 2+.. i'm certain the car feels like it has around 450whp and i feel like i can gap any car or supercar (just that greatness feeling lmao) and honestly i absolutely love the damn thing.. its sharp, fast and nimble.. more than what i need, more than whats needed to even drive on the streets... its something i take pride in, coming from shitboxes to something i built by my own hands and makes me feel tremendously happy.. no joke, building this car in months it took, eased off on my depression, and driving it like a hoon is it's own experience to cure it.. we dont need 1000hp big turbo cars like everyone on youtube or social media is doing.. just find a good platform, mod it and tune it to your taste.. drive like you stole it (responsibly) and have fun, with the 300 or 400hp that the car has.. it's way more than enough. cheers
N55 with fmic and stage 2 mhd tune can produce up to 370 HP. That's what I'm looking to do with my 335i hopefully by winter

Yeah I'm pretty close to the limit with my stage 2+ 400awhp n55 but you really don't need more power for a daily, since upgrading from stage 1 I rarely go WOT from a stop anymore cuz it gets up to 60 pretty quick at 3.7 sec and I still get to make my friend jelly that his brand new m340i won't beat my little F32 lol
-Edit: I'm pretty much at the limit without doing major drivetrain upgrades, F Chassis AWD can't handle that much HP stock
Yeah I have a 335xi as well. The 8hp50(mines a '15) handles power just fine,,especially if you reflash(same with earlier 8hp45) BUT the dang 180mm diffs that are welded and open really limit power handling. It is possible to have lsd's installed but stupid expensive. If I ever get to install an 8hp70 then I'll look into seeing if I cam sntall the 210 diffs front and rear with a bolt-on ring gear(to send in and install an lsd on the stock diff it's around $2400ish per)
You mentioned only the EWG N55’s vs N54’s but forgot about PWG N55’s like in a late model e82 135i or e90 335i when talking about fueling. The short on our systems is the LPFP, which is already a stronger system than the EWG cars. Just like the N54, the PWG N55 HPFP is the stronger of the two N55’s, and most of the time is good for E60 blends without port injection. Plus a bonus is that it’s way cheaper to upgrade a LPFP than a HPFP! (Unless you factor in having to replace it around 120k if you’re outside of their class action lawsuit timeline for the HPFP)😉
I own a 13' pre-July (if you know you know) F30 335i Sedan and my car was in the middle of the development stage. It's PWG. They switched to EWG in July. The wastegate difference alone will allow EWGs to be able to take 20-40 more hp more than a PWG car would. They also had the DME locked until May (dont' quote me on this) of 2013. HUGE differences that people don't realize until they start modding their cars.

Idk what limitations you’re referring to regarding the later n55 iterations. They’ve became more robust and tuner friendly. For starters adding an ewg as opposed too pneumatic. Also forged crank and rods as opposed too cast.

I had a 14' N55 in a 335i - had the dealer install the Dinan stage 2 tune. Within 1000 miles it was in the dealer countless times with issues. Went into limp mode x times, blew the intake pipe twice. Needles to say I traded the car soon after was just a headache.

12 years and 196000 kms and my n54 is still going strong making 407 whp and i give it hell... only thing i changed is my injectors to index 12. Original hpfp, original turbos bit of rattle tho, original water pump. Full bolt ons of course and custom tune water methanol injection.. still not bad for a old motor. Long live the mighty N54.

Stock Turbo (EWG) N55's are running mid 11's. 99% of custom single turbo N54 cars are 11 second cars so how much more hp an N54 can make doesn't mean shit really. After 13 years there are still only a handful of N54's running 9's and barely. And there are not many 10 second N54's either when you consider how many were built.

I’m in the process of buying a 135i N55 having come from a Chevy Cruze with a blown head gasket and I’m sure the N55 will blow my mind. the exhausting pursuit of the “best version” of a bargain sports car feels pointless. The N55 may not be as “tunable” as some other model, but it does have that fancy screen and swanky rotary dial at a price that I can afford. That alone is worth way more to me than the ability to get more power out of expensive bolt on parts that I would never use to begin with because it would void my warranty anyway.
The n55 is a highly tuner friendly engine, especially the n55b30O0(m235i) and the n55b30T0(m2) due to their forged pistons, crankshaft, and additional oil cooling. Upgrade the charge pipe and you’re good to 400whp, upgrade the intercooler and you’re good to about 450whp before you start getting fuel cutting issues.

PwG N55 is what people were complaining about, not the EwG N55.
N54 vs N55 blown WAY out of proportion. So N54 makes a little more power on stock turbo. Ok. N55 maxed out stock turbo still fast af compared to other cars. Then, just turbo upgrade the N55 if you want ultimate power. 🤷🏼♂️
A twin scroll miminc a sequential twin turbo. I belive n54 are parallel turbo setup. So not exactly the same feeling. N55 would be way more linear for the same total output. Thus faster.

I think BMW figured out that you can get a N54 335i, put some money and take over some E9X M3s. So they built their N55 so you can’t take over their F8X M3/M4.

However, in the used market I don’t really see the advantage of buying an N54, I only see disadvantages.
The N54 has so many problems that it isn’t worth it to buy one used, even if your shooting for 500+ HP.
It’s very likely you’ll need to upgrade the N54 turbos, along with various other issues. The cost you’ll spend fixing it will exceed the cost to simply upgrade the N55 turbo & fuel system, and you’ll have a more reliable, newer car.

What you’re saying about the twin scroll is kinda off, a twin scroll is actually better than a twin because how it works is it dynamically adjusts at different RPM’s one gate is larger than the other so you get appropriate boost throughout the rpms.
Alpina still makes their B3/B4 by taking N55 and putting Mitsubishi turbos from N54 (+ forged crankshaft, larger intercooler, NGK spark plugs, aplina ECU and TCU flash). So current Alpina B3/B4 is basically a N55 + N54 turbos, it makes 440hp and it's a stock car with all warranties

In what world is 480 ish whp slow for a daily street car ? I own a "11 e92 paired with the dct (yes it has the n55, the pwg version) . Pure 500 turbo, lpfp and hpfp + bolt ons and it makes 480 up to 6.5k rpm on 95 octane , if i switch to the e50 map it makes around 530-545 whp depending on how warm it's outside 🤷
Got an N55B30 in a 2016 M235i I bought new. At 53K miles have had zero issues with anything.
Only problem I’ve had with my 2016 f22 is offer putting the JB4 tube on it is that it eats through charge pipe I’m in my 3rd in less than a year (it was fine stock) and I’m hoping to get an aluminum one instead.
with all due respect that was a very foolish decision to tune before upgrading ur chargepipe, chargepipe is the first thing you need to do before anything else with these n55s, i gotta ‘16 m235i myself and did the cp and FMIC not long after preventative purposes
i’ve heard of some guys trying to retrofit the S55’s dual HPFP setup but i think it’s pretty costly

N55 with the ZF 8 speed. That ZF transmission is incredibly quick. Even stock. Throw an XHP flash tune on it and that car will be/feel like a little rocket. My wife owns a m235 and it’s the most funnest car to drive, she won’t let me tune it but for some reason I enjoy driving it A LOT more than my full bolt E90 335i making 450WHp.

N54 forged rods and crank, N55 doesnt. and I do believe the the N54 block pistons sleeves are stronger as well
not entirely true. Certain vairants of N55 such as in the M235i & M2 got forged crank and rods as well. The N55 in the M2 also has the valvetronic, bearings, and pistons from the S55 as well.

the important "why" is at 2:50
exhaust scavenging and negative vs positive pressure in the exhaust manifold, which has net affect on the engine itself. Hence why twin scrolls rock.
BMW forged some internals of the n54 because they weren't too sure about the twin turbo setup. It had its issues for sure but it's a GREAT motor that won many awards for years and was still being used even ten years later in some models. Bottom line is that they came out with the n55 to mostly save money and for better fuel efficiency.
That's just false... they added valvetronic and a dct transmission to the n55. Not sure how that's "saving money." N55 has 1 less turbo. That's it. It's twin scroll is more responsive, produces more torque at lower rpms, produces less heat, and overall reduces failure points. There was nothing cheaper about the n55. Twinscrolls are more expensive.

the point of this video wasnt to bag on the N55. As an owner of an N55 BMW and someone who greatly prefers it over the N54, the point of this video was to explain some of the hardware limitations that users encounter frequently. Turbo & fueling being the two biggest factors from everything I have read. And yes i have heard of 1StockF30, his car is badass.
I have owned an N54 for 6 years and now I currently own a B58 and a N55. If you want power: B58 > N54 > N55….if you want reliability : B58 > N55 > N54…..Basically B58 is king, then between N54 and N55 you need to choose between power and reliability.
N55 is a reliable and simple n54 that uses better tech to get same outcome with less. If you don’t mind everything breaking and you want over 600 whp then go ahead
The reliability and sound of the n55 far outweighs the HP difference. Most people don't mod and try to squeeze out every ounce of hp from the turbos when they buy car anyway.
And again, I mentioned this in your last video, all N55's have forged rods, the same exact rods as in the S55. Also my N55 has the same fuel system as the N54 and at 108k I am on the original hpfp.
Scott Redmond I will have to go digging but to my understanding the n55 doesn’t have forged internals and the n54 does. One is open deck the other is closed. And the turbos to me do not make a difference since a lot of people go single turbo anyway.
@@melvinkimble7709 please dig, all N55's have sinter forged rods and if you need a list of the N55's that have the forged crank let me know. Also the N54 and N55 are open deck. Having to read over and over about the N54's "forged internals" I just annoying AF. Also it's sinter forged.
There’s a lot of misinformed people out there who never taken an n55 apart but telling people about the engine and they don’t know themselves. I took 3 n55’s apart and all of them had forged internals.

Scott Redmond I have done pistons kits in 2 F30 EWG N55’s both of them had forged crankshafts, even 90’s Honda B series D series H and F series engines had forged crankshafts I doubt bmw would skimp out on something so common these days.

Been seeing a lot of n55 guys have rod bearing issues lately
That’s caused by OFHG not done properly, N55 engines are known to go over 200k miles, some have gone almost 300k, original turbo.
I’ve been looking for a 2011 for a few weeks now and out of the 6 or 7 I’ve checked out 2 had rod knock I’ve been seeing it more and more
thevernonposse you sure it wasn’t vanos, n55 may have rod issues if people don’t follow oil priming procedure when changing oil filter housing gasket. Also long oil intervals doesn’t help.
E82 and E9X debuted in europe in 2004 and the N54 debuted in 2006! thats why the pre lci cars in 2007 have a different chime because thats the chime from 04-07!

@JustLuuchi well..... b58 wont run power reliably if crank hub isnt upgraded. So no difference really. Theres guy on youtube doing 682 whp with n55 unopened. There's running big power reliably.....and then there's abusing a car. You can blow a b58 to pieces if you drive it in the correct manner for that....🤷♂️
@@Drquimbaymatumbo the designs are damn near identical block decks are different but that effects cooling not power. They damn near hold the same if it’s not a manual no dsg over 600hp m5 comps need clutches to do over 700 cause the trans can’t hold. Everyone just capping when it comes to b58. And I’ve seen n55 make around 500-600 reliably anything over that though Is a different story!

N55 sounds better, is more reliable, and is enough to max out the auto trans which 99% of us have anyway.
N55 is far superior to the N54. N54 is nice, but no N55

@@magictw77 You don't have to pull the entire engine to replace the vanos solenoids. Most people can replace them in about 30min
magictw77 the B58B30 engine has been already out since early 2016 in the M140i, M240i, 340i, and 440i and the G10 740i phasing out the N55B30 all together. The version inside in the early models was the B58B30M0. the Supra used the B58B30C which is different from the B58B30O1 that the Z4 uses. All the variances are based on how the engine produces its power for it specific platform it is being put in as well as emissions. for 2020 all non sport BMW’s (G-series chassis) will be using the M1 variant of the B58 for emission compliances.
I have a 2018 M2. I'll be testing the B58 HDP6 fuel pump on stage 2 before going for the big boost/PS2

@@usernamealreadytaken770 It's not too bad, the actual pump is awkward to get to, and all you have to do is cut the flange on the new pump. The HDP5 evo pump is easier to fit than the HDP6, due to the angle of the connector of the 6, you have to dremel a small bit of plastic from the inlet manifold. I have a 2011 E82, with full bolt ons meth, and stage 1 turbo, I did 414 hp and 522 tq on a dyno but that was in the summer heat of Texas so it was heat soaked so I think it would've hit about 450 hp

Big misconception.. all n55s have forged connecting rods. many forms have confirmed that. Its the earlier models that have cast cranks. The wear point on earlier n55s is not the rods but the cranks. When we see failure its cranks splitting, not bent or snapped rods.

ive seen a 700hp n55 m235i and i consider that as high power
was it 700hp at the wheels? its also important to understand what kind of dyno it was on since these figures can be manipulated very easily. But i do agree with you the N55 can make pretty high power!

I’m hitting near 500whp on my f21 m135i n55 and I can have it more up than this. They do over 650whp on these engines without internals. All the n54 55 b58 all need big changes to make great power, a turbo upgrade and hpfp the right fuel and bingo they all do it. They get to certain point and all will break and need internals for big big power
Ill take a n55 over n54 any day. If I want to upgrade I’ll get a B58

You can retrofit the b58 HPFP for pretty cheap if you find them used under $500 or brand new for $1000. Also Spool Performance is coming out with a HPFP for the f series n55 for under $1000 and beta testing already looks promising. The release of the pump is said to be a few weeks away can't wait 🤗

Simply Car Things I removed my limiter on my 2011 335i MSport PPK, and 160 on a runway was not even an effort.. Didn't go full top speed as it was a small private airport in Nevada, so I can see 175 or a bit more
