I just bought a refurbished M3 macbook with 24gb of ram and 1tb of storage (8core CPU, 10core GPU) using it for some (not super intense) video editing and for school. I had the option of getting the m3 pro for the same price but with less ram (18gb) but with more cores (11core cpu, 14core gpu).
I decided in the end the ram was more important than the cores. I’d love to know ur thoughts!!

100% agree with this. I have a desktop that I produce music on that has 96GB of RAM, granted a windows machine is far less optimal for music production and I find that my machine is still only using about 15/20% of it's RAM with Chrome open / Studio One and Bitwig. That's roughly 19 GB utilised. I honestly reckon you could get away with the 18GB model even for music production (provided you're not having tow DAW's open simultaneously - for a very specific use case).

I’m ditching my iPad Pro, keeping it as a Netflix machine. I had a Macbook Air couple of years ago, but I gave it to someone. The iPad hasn’t been satisfying my computing needs. Not “Pro” needs, mind you, just simple computing and browsing and file managing. I miss the traditional laptop experience. HOWEVER, I’m currently torn between waiting for the M3 Air but seriously dreading the non-promotion display, or get a 14” Macbook pro and upping it to 16gigs.

I am getting to hop onto the M3 Max from a 2013 MacBook Pro Rentina 15”. The old MBP is still running fine but very slow. I don’t however involve video editing for content creation or 3D graphics rendering works but I may venture into it as hobby in the future. I will most likely to spec the new 16” M3 Max with 64Gb and 2TB as this is going to last another 10 yrs. For me basically getting a MBP with higher specs is more of future proof since I won’t be upgrading for the next 5-8 yrs.

Yes, it is truly a confusing set of options this year. I more or less came to a conclusion for myself that the sweet spots for me are the highest spec 14” M3Pro MBP, or the lowest spec 16” M3Mac MBP. I already have a 16” M1Pro MBP, so I think I will hold out on any upgrades to that for at least another year or two. I will likely pick up a M3 Air when that comes out…I need something portable and I don’t think being led down a confusing path for the 14” does many any good despite arguments to the contrary.

Maybe someone in this comment section can help me decide which MacBook would be a good fit for me. I am currently rocking a M1 MBP 13" with 8 GB of RAM. In the last year I started doing full-stack development as a student still and my workflow consists of running IntelliJ and WebStorm in parallel which really pushes the 8 GB of RAM to its limits. Currently I should be running my application in a VM on Windows to run some tests there but I just can't. 8 GB of RAM is not enough to do that unfortunately.
I will be graduating in physics/IT in mid 2024 and I want a MacBook that lasts me at least 5 years while also being my work computer. I don't know exactly what I am gonna do after my masters but I assume something in software development or machine learning. So now I am wondering which MacBook to buy. To be honest I would just simply spec out the M3 Max chip and go with a 1 TB SSD and be fine. But I'm wondering if this is necessary. Maybe there are some people here that work as a full-stack developer or train machine models for their living that can tell me what their setup looks like an how much computing power they need for their personal work machine.
    Thank you :)

I’ll be majoring in Pre med so I won’t need a super powerful laptop, but just one that can handle what I’ll be doing. My budget is $2,000. Can you help me decide what MacBook is best for me?

I was looking for the M3, but which one? Wasn't my goal, but I'm flirting to go back to Windows with a Dell XPS. Any suggestion?

I am currently using a 12" MacBook from early 2016, which is unfortunately no longer supported with major software releases. So I'm stuck on Monterey. It's on its last leg at this point since I've been using it each and every day for the past seven years. Battery capacity is practically gone, processing speed is very bad and it only has 8gb of ram. I plan to upgrade to the baseline M3 with no modifications. I don't do intensive tasks all the much since this is just my personal computer for work whilst I have a separate dedicated gaming windows laptop. Storage hasn't been an issue on my MacBook and I only ever really have 2/3 apps open at once. 5.53gb of memory was currently used as of typing this.
I don't know how 8gb would run on an Apple silicon chip. Since I've never used a laptop with one before. Again, I rarely do intensive things like rendering. I would bump it up to 16gb for $200 more (I do have a $100 voucher). Then again, that does bring the price closer to the M3 Pro chip model that starts with 18gb of unified memory. But I don't want to spend more for a faster chip with speeds I do not particularly need, including it compromises battery life on the 14" model. Nor do I desire a bigger laptop like the 16" as it is both heavier and more expensive, of course.
Mentally, I am not adamant on upgrading ASAP but I don't particularly desire to wait for the new MacBook Air either. So if anyone is willing to share their views on this, I would appreciate it.

I'm using MBP 2018 and able to run Sonoma as well. 8gb here and good enough for some webdev, little bit video editing and Photoshop. Memory is about 6-7gb, but i'm using a lot of tabs in Chrome as well. Waited for M3... but now when I'm looking these specs etc...
Some things are off - at least for me. This 8gb base and removing thunders + some small things that will bother me if i'm going for long term. My MBP 2018 have 4 thunders by default. Currently I don't need any more power and I get my tasks done. For video side it will be good to have better specs, but it's not my main thing here. At the moment not sure about 2 229 € investment for 16gb M3. But you never know... still love M3 stuff.
If i'm looking your case... U have early 2016 12" no ports basically + you need do sit with Monterey. I would probably upgrade to M3 16gb model. Especially if you going for long term as well, it's worth it. My friend using MacBook Air from 2012, but it's not like everyday use... time to time some video calls and Word/Excel. But no updates anymore....
But if you using some more powerful laptop for gaming then probably you can run other tasks as well on it. Why don't you use it for work? Windows for gaming and for work you use MacBook? Ask from your company? Or if you're freelancer and want to have separated MacBook for work etc in the feature then go for M3 16gb, it's worth it at the end of the day.
But the thing is that for you in USD M3 16gb vs M3 Pro base model, the difference is only 200 dollars. If you have voucher it will be even less. If there is only 100 USD difference for you then go for M3 Pro base 14" and you run another 5-7 years with it. Maybe you start playing games there... if Apple supports.

No IFs or BUTs, 8gb is NOT enough! Nowhere enough and Apple knows it, it is one of their oldest tricks, they are using it to hide the real price.
It is not just too little for the CPU it ignores that your GPU is also using the RAM which means there will be massive caching and swapping to your SSD which will not only slow everything down, but will wear out the SSD which means your Macbook will be toast when it finally fails.
I have a 16Gb/512Gb Macbook Pro M1 Pro and that is borderline. I periodically get graphics failing to render and have too much memory swapping to the SSD.
You can always plug in extra SSD storage externally, but do not skimp on the RAM!

I got 128Gb Ram on my desktop. Also Denoise on Lightroom Classic is 3-6 seconds on my desktop, compared to the M3 Laptop 36 seconds. Gonna get a M3 Max 14/30 with 3gb Ram/1 Tb SSD which is more than enough for a laptop. The prices are crazy for Apple laptops though. Never thought a 16 inch laptop would cost 4350 euro!@@drabekstepan
