Why don't the planes land on the other side of the runway, towards the mountains?
@@Balta454 Mainly because the other end (Runway 02) has a tail wind. It has been used at certain times when the wind shear on Runway 20 was problematic and the tail wind speeds are within aircraft capabilities.

Yes, I see that this would be so historical for this airport having to be open and functional for the people there. I am glad there are aircraft able to fly there. I have seen from another TH-cam video that the 757-200 will reach and land there safely. So, packages, mail and medical supplies can get there faster. That is so important since having the airport finished from constriction. Thank you for sharing the thoughts of your great city and it's people. God Bless.
Up until this airport was built there were many Saints who had never seen an aircraft,yes I know this to be a fact.

@@suresh1957 you would think that, but where the island is, its not under a trans continental flight path in the South Atlantic Ocean. that's not to say, its not impossible. B.A flew there a 4 years ago for the first time ever. It's not an easy place to land either, extremely windy with no backup airport to go to for 2,000kms

Not true, most saints leave the island to live in the U.K. or Ascension and travel back regularly. Maybe some of the super elderly would have not but that's about it.

be interested to know what the wind was doing - looks like you have a prevailing south easterly? so the wind would have been coming straight into your face there I guess, meaning maybe a 30 degree crosswind on the runway?
The a318 has a reasonable range...it does Transatlantic with relative ease...and a light load
West to east, yes: outbound to the US there's a refuelling stop at Shannon.
Stephen Saunders because they can’t take a full load of fuel and depart LCY, if it went from LHR it could probably do it
@@stephensaunders1845 fueling stop is only because the runway at london city is to small to take a fully loaded a318, if the runway is longer it could actually make it all the way
Shannon also has a US Customs checkpoint, so once the plane lands in the US it’s treated as a domestic flight instead of international

WOW! A plane landing and take off. Amazing.
I see a localizer on Runway 02. I can't tell if there is one on the other end also. There may also be a glideslope on runway 20, but the building is not painted in such a way I can be sure. Anyway, instrument approaches are much needed in case of bad weather. There is not another airport for an alternate.
It looks like a windy landing, yet the windsock is limp.
Visionery1 I suggest you have another look, it's blowing at 90* to the runway, its renowned for its "windsheer" just to add to the challenge!.
Wind shear is known problem for this airport, and they discovered only after the construction was already done.
I thought Runway 02 was supposed to have a significant tailwind. This landing seemed to be able to stop fairly easy. Was that because they were landing a lite plane?
We believe the wind on that day was gusting up to 30 knots. Have since learned the wind gusts differently in mainly 3 different locations along the runway, the worst being somewhere across the middle which you can see at 1.56 on take-off.
BA has used this aircraft type on the London City Airport to JFK in New York route for several years now. This has a stop at Shannon Airport in Ireland to top the tanks up and allow the all-business class passengers to clear US immigration. Reaching you with the stops they did should be straightforward
BA actually used this aircraft,G-EUNB, it was leased to Titan by BA back in 2017 and sold to them last yeah.
Years ago, even before St Helena Airport was opened, I suggested to the relevant people that scheduled flights should be operated from the UK to St Helena via Accra. St Helena is a British territory, and flying via Jo'burg and Cape Town greatly increases the time, cost, and emissions involved in flying tourists to and from Britain to St Helena. Accra was already connected with London by regular commercial flights, so only the second leg was needed. There was no reason why a British-registered airliner, nominally based on St Helena, plus a Ghana-registered airliner based in Accra, could not offer two circular services per week, with a drop-in on Ascension Island also: Accra to St H. to Ascension to Accra, plus St H. to Ascension to Accra to St H. Using this route for certain military personnel and supplies would also cut costs for the UK Government. I hope that current circumstances will see to it that the London-Accra-St H. route is maintained, as it will allow encourage many more tourists, especially from the UK and France, to visit St Helena.
Makes so much sense William. It would be good if a solution can be found soon that makes UK travel easier/cheaper but which can also keep open a link to South Africa. Do you think London, Accra, Ascension, St Helena, South Africa and then back up might also be a workable option?
There may not be enough passenger demand from Accra to fill seats on a regular flight. St. Helena gets a lot of visitors from South Africa. This is in the same pattern as the RMS St Helena which served Ascension Island and St Helena after sailing from Cape Town, South Africa.
@@marknc9616 One should not replace the South African market, but rather augment it. Few South Africans have the wealth and interest to visit St. Helena. Europe is a key market, especially the UK and France. For these visitors, Accra and Abidjan are much better stopovers than Jo'burg. Using existing Paris-Abidjan and London-Accra flights helps to keep the cost down. But perhaps I have hopelessly missed the real problem?! St. Helena is a small island with a tiny population that has very limited tourist accommodation. If there were many more places to stay. tourists could destroy the restful nature and environment of St. Helena, and hence destroy the reasons for visiting it! Perhaps it is better that tourism is strictly limited? That is for the people of St. Helena to decide.

I was tracking this flight the whole way. I hope this Covid problem doesn’t spread to beautiful St Helena. It’s the last thing anybody needs right now.

SV Delos was there...that's the only reason I know about this place. Maybe one day I'll be able to visit it..............for now, Corona has us all landlocked

Wow this is an amazing video to watch. And surprisingly in Kathmandu, Nepal our Tribhuvan International Airport has the same runway headings like St. Helena's Airport.. Its Runway 02 and another is Runway 20 😊🙏

Landings are extremely tricky due to the constant wind

nice video, it seems they constructed the airport right at the coast where always heavy winds are making landings difficult.
There was little choice. St Helena is only 47sq miles in size with very mountainous terrain and the location (Prosperous Bay Plain) was deemed the only workable option.
My parents lived there in the late nineteen nineties and mum still keeps in touch with some of them.
My great grandparents also lived there one hundred years before.

Brilliant video of the plane. Hopefully this means they will push forward for direct flights now they have trialled the Airbus. With 3 children in tow it would make our life sooo much easier to get on one plane til the end .

Apart from these charter flights our normal service (before Covid) was just one flight per week from Johannesburg, an Embraer E190 flown by SA Airlink.
There are also specialist medevac flights from time to time, also flown from Jo'burg.
What's the biggest aircraft can land there? B757-300? A321? A330?

Basically this. Normally passenger service is provided with a Embraer E190, although the design intended for shorter 737s/A320s to possibly use the airport. (Comair tried using a 737-800 when the airport first opened, but that proved to be really challenging.)
Maybe the new airbus A220 would do it with stop in ascension??

I must say time was right to record this video,not harsh sunlight,but no dark either
Approx 2.30pm - 4pm. We're currently in our autumn season here so the sunlight is quite diffused, as you noted, and perfect for photography/videography.

The A220 has better range and could be suited to fly from the canary islands to st.Helena.

Strange to use an aircraft with a relatively poor range to a remote destination like this. I bet one flight crew did all three sectors out
There are not many other planes you can use on a field with such a short runway.
Runway length is 1950m. Available landing length on rnwy 20 is 1550m.
3600 mile range isn't really poor.
other than a turbo prop , cannot see a heavier plan than the A318 landing with a decent load.
Poor range? A319 has an amazing range for its class. When empty like this one mostly was it cab go nearly 4000NM
Did you have cases of covid then?
No known cases on the island at present. A couple of false alarms, but still Covid 19-free at this moment in time it would appear.

Brummiewellington - thanks for the info. I’d prefer to have the wind noise. this is like trying to mask the smell of a fart with terrible after-shave. The video is really good, wind noise is not ideal but it’s better than random music that changes halfway through the video.

Hi to the saints 👋 it Could be a possibility the Airbus A220 to do the run. Airbus states the range at 3500-3800 nmi with a refuel in ascension to be safe 🤔

Yes, a solution has been found using the Embraer E190 which seems to be able to cope well with the wind conditions + runway length + range from South Africa. Scheduled flights have been operating on a weekly basis (Saturdays) since October 2017.

I have a question. Now that the RMS St Helena has been taken out of service, because of this airport, how do the Saints who work in Mt Pleasant, Stanley and Ascension Island get home? The RMS St Helena used to call at ASI and pick them up.
There is two flights a month between Ascension and st helena

Yes. The main supply though is stored in Rupert's Valley, a couple of miles around the coastline.
Hope BA would introduce a one weekly 319 flight from LHR via ACC if the range allows it

Charlie [Chilli943] even if the 321 could do the flight could the island generate the amount of traffic needed to make a profit on the route. I doubt it, so via somewhere will continue to be the model.
@@ATH_Berkshire Yeah, I looked up the route this A318 took earlier and I think it stopped in Ghana or something so that would probably best. I think a plane with some cargo capacity would also be good for the route's profitability and local economy as well. I'd like to think we see more connections in the near future but with everything going on at the moment who knows!
this airport is unique in evey aspect. not all the aircrafts can land here
It's a Category C airport. An explanation online reads:
"Category C airports require specific crew and pilot training as they have unusual and often stunning approaches.
Pilots may have to consider weather conditions and aircraft performance and are required to have passed specific and specialised training courses which can include ground training, simulator and airborne."

The airport is able to refuel the planes. It's a Cat C airport. Aircraft need to be suitable for wind conditions, runway length and range, and get permission of course :)

The only way to fix this dangerous airport is to install aircraft carrier catapults to shoot the jets into the air and arrester wires to catch them as they land. Also, the passengers should be given compulsory swimming and rock climbing lessons and be wearing parachutes in case of engine failure after take off.
Haha, thanks for the comment John :) Thankfully there seems to be good knowledge now with the different pilots and air service providers of how to operate safely here. It's still quite fascinating though for us to watch the flights land and take-off :)
Why do they carry out training on the airfield?
The airport is a Category C, which as we understand means the conditions require specialist training for pilots. It looks like Titan Airways were taking advantage of the situation, perhaps with a view to being able to deliver future flights as required.

Yes, sorry about that. That's actually spots on the sensor which can't seem to get off.
@@whatthesaintsdidnext What is the camera? If it is a DSLR, you can get special designed swabs to clean the sensor and mirror. I had this happen on a Pentax over 10 years ago, and was able to clean the spot of debris off. Ask your buddy Google about cleaning the sensor / mirror on your camera model.
@@HeartlandTuber Have the swabs and tried it a few times, can't seem to shift it. Used to clean it fine previously but not getting any luck with these spots. It's an old camera (5Dii) but works fine otherwise. Must remember to use the other camera for video in future.

Yes, it's the new gateway 👍 for 500+ years it was the Jamestown harbour and landing steps where people came in/out, 🚢 but since 2018 the large majority of arrivals come in through the airport. ✈

Is the Airbus 318 larger than the Embraer? Doesnt look like it had much trouble landing with those crosswinds the Boeing encountered when it landed. Then again there wasn't a camera in the cockpit to see if the pilots had any issues either.
Windsheer is a issue. The b737 cant land fully loaded at the airport with a tailwind. This makes the riute rather unprofitable. Thats the only reason. A 737 techmically could land safetly every day.

@@craiglasky1884 the a318 is really small so i guess not. I think a a319 would be able to land fine too. The 737 they used was a larger 800 series so i reckon a 700 or smaller would also do fine. No idea though its up to airlines they can always modify.
...and very likely the last A318 to land there as plane travel is set to become a footnote in history for most people....

G-EUNB is owned and operated by Titan Airways, based at Stansted here in the UK. Leased by them from BA in 2017, purchased 2019. So I'm not sure where Australia comes into it?
