Saw Elevation Rifles do this a few days ago. He used a life size elk target. Makes more sense than shooting milk jugs.
Vital zone of a mule deer isn’t but a few inches larger than a jug. 🤷♀️
Shooting a smaller target in training than the real deal is always smart. Also, the more people that will actually go and shoot in field conditions the better. Milk jug, steel, paper plates, whatever. Just go and shoot with your hunting rifles at targets in the field. All of the training styles are way better than the normal hunter approach of never training off the bench.
Excellent example of how To train and learn your limitations. Thanks
best video ive seen in a while. always nice to find new ideas of how to practice. the old flat range can get a bit boring
Appreciate the comment. Thanks for watching. 👍
Great video Eric..one of your best to date. Very realistic conditions and encourages all riflemen/hunters to take the time to practice under realistic environmental conditions.
I'm glad you liked it. 👍
This is an awesome idea to use life size targets. This is exactly what I do with the clay pigeons. I fill my backpack full of clays. Walk across a few different ridges and canyons, Set them out in all different locations across an area that looks just like this. Different distance and elevation changes. Then I shoot from about 6 different locations. I'm definitely going to get one of these live size banner targets. Such a great idea.
Thanks for watching. I'm glad you liked the video.
Love the diverse locations of shots, great practice to learn how to adapt in various conditions, challenge and improve your ability.
Now this is a great field test! Very revealing how wind affects the shot at such distances. No surprise that closer to target, better the shot results. More reason for rifle shooters to close the distance whenever possible. I'll bet that 99% of hunters shooting, practicing at long ranges of 450-700 yards never get off a bench rest. Fantastic idea of using life size, real appearing target. Deer don't glow like milk jugs, red or white plates at long range. Deer blend into their environment & terrain.
Thanks for showing what us hunters should do to prepare for our hunts. A lot of people are rightfully concerned about people getting the wrong idea about long range hunting from social media, but you are simply showing us what to do to practice and get better. Those of us who practice this way get a more realistic idea of our performance in the field. Lots of respect from Central OR.
Appreciate you watching.
Decent shooting in that wind.
Love the video. Thank you for sharing!
Just waiting for the snow to melt here! Freaking wyoming winter
Snowed 4 inches here yesterday.
Sounds about right for this time of year still have a couple feet on the jackson hole side of wyoming
Great video. Always looking for new ideas to practice in the field, and this life-size vinyl target is a great idea.
Yea, it gives you the real size of the vitals which I like. Thanks for watching.
@@Guidedhunts My pleasure. Good content on your videos. Very practical. If I ever get drawn in WY (I'm in AZ) and you're still guiding I'll give you a shout.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching.
Awesome! Love the "realistic" practice. I'm going to have to try it this summer.
Thanks for all the work! Run the same optics and you can’t practice enough!
I do the same practice and it pays off!
Good stuff. Saw another guy doing the life size targets with a cold bore. So much more realistic. Also, if you hunt the question isn't if you will miss, but when. Made a bad shot this year and got very lucky and recovered the deer. It happens.
Thanks for watching. Yes, he must have had the same thoughts I did on the life-size target.
@@Guidedhunts Both of y'all posted within a day of each other, so great minds and all.
Subscribed. You got some good stuff on shooting. Thanks.
Ha that’s me lol
This video popped up on my feed today .
I did my first one yesterday. My series is called one shot and I’m doing 10 shots on 10 different days.
Funny thing is I did the jug challenge as well bout the same time guided did :) Got another uploading tonight.
@@elevationrifles There he is.
Elk dropping. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Great job, that is the way to practice.
excellent video, great practice. looks like you got a workout moving the target.
Perfect training for hunting. Great job on showing wind drift.
This is really helpful. I’ve watched how good a shot you are, and I also know the distances involved in Wyoming hunting. This challenges me to apply this kind of practice in the field. Great video!
I am glad you liked it. Practicing similar to this will teach you a lot about the wind drift.
Good video. I like to practice in a similar way. It can really humble you and for me it helps to keep me from taking those tempting long shots when there are so many variables to consider.
Great video
Great video buddy you are right practice
Appreciate you watching. 👍
Super cool video. Super cool concept. New subscriber. Can’t wait to watch more of your content. Really neat, brother!
Appreciate it, man. Thanks for watching. 👍
Great video. Thanks for showing what shooting in the west is like. Its almost never perfect conditions. Great shooting too.
Great practice! Learned a lot from where you hit compared to the wind. Beautiful country too.
Thanks for watching. Appreciate it. The wind is definitely something to factor into long range hunting.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to show what it like in the real world, with rocks, cacutus and trees in the way, not just in a manicured field.
Appreciate you watching. 👍
someone spilled their raisinettes!!!! I am really jealous of your "range". I need to find a range where i can go further than 200yds
Thanks, I appreciate it. Thanks for watching.
@@Guidedhunts did you ever figure out what to do with that 338 savage?
@mikecrotts3943 I am waiting on a couple more things to come in to change. Then, I will post another video.
You are spunkie today. I'm subscribed!
Awesome video!
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Thanks for watching. 👍
Chris, fwiw, I appreciate your content, efforts, videos. I also respect that you don't edit the content - we see what really happens. This is the best scenario video I've seen thus far as a sequel to Jim's, at Backfire, original challenge.
I'd very much like to see some very steep angle shots from you with that rifle and ammo to see how you have to compensate your POA. For example, if you had a 350 yard shot from you to target but a greatly steep uphill or downhilll shot
Thanks, I'm glad you like the content. Yes, I have a video in the works on angles. It should be a good one. Thanks for watching. 👍
I like it
Great Video, wonderful thought. why didn't you adjust on your second shots. The other thing that would be great is to talk about adjustments, all part of hunting as well. The more we do that, the more were acquainted...second nature with doing these things.
Thanks for the comment. I couldn't see the holes until the second or third shot in the target. Then, I started to hold the reticle over into the neck area to offset the hits. I might do a video on holding hashmarks vs. using the widage turret.
I was excited to hit the 1000yd target with 10-20mph winds at the cody shooting complex this last wednesday. Only took 3 attempts to hit it lol. Ive never shot that far before.
Awesome man congratulations. Appreciate you watching. 👍
I'm going to try this out this year! Also Wyoming resident
Awesome, I hope you do. Thanks for watching.
This is a great way to practice! Shooting from positions that are exactly what you will encounter come hunting season and learning what your bullet does from those positions is so valuable. I have to get me one of those targets now. Is that an app that you used with the cross hairs to capture the location and count of your shots?
Appreciate you watching. No App for the cross hair. The cross hair is where I was holding. The bullet count was what I did on editing the video.
Really cool way to practise, and you dont have to pack it out afterwards 😀
Lol yeah, thanks for watching.
Great video. Real time practice. What rifle rest was that? Looking for something similar.
It is a Crosstac bag filled with foam beads. Watch my other video. I show it and talk about it.
You need a lab coat for all the science your giving us, thank you sir for this. Very good content for hunters, especially new hunters.
Mountain raisins @2:00
Great video!! Curious what your takeaways are if any, from that practice exercise?
Thanks, couple things. I am going to invest in a kestrel. For wind and other factors. Try to use my windage dial on my scope instead of holding into the wind. And I need to practice more in windy conditions. Thanks for watching.
@Guidedhunts bingo wind calls. 👍 much respect
You take that shooting bag with u when u hunt
Yes, not all my hunters have a bipod, it is filled with foam beads it's lightweight. Check out my other video. I talk about it. Thanks for watching.
Excellent Video. Will you share information of hiring you as a hunting guide.
Look up Trophy Ridge Outfitters. That's who I work for. If you book a hunt you can request me as your guide. Thanks for watching.
Thx a lot for sharing, question :
What’s the the thing you’re using to put the rifle on and not moving?
The shooting bag is a Crosstac bag. If that's what you're asking.
@@Guidedhunts thanks a lot appreciate it
Is that a second focal plane scope or first what power
It is a second focal plane scope. 5-20x50.
Hold for wind vs dialed here. Both work per say.
I might do another video on dialed vs hold for wind. Thanks for watching.
@@Guidedhunts - Please know I have seen a couple of these recently on social media. Yours is professional grade with conditions and appropriate application. Anxious to see more. From my experience - Wind and elevation matter. Steep shots into a canyon at 300 are more complex than some realize.
@@steverutkowski8141 appreciate it, thanks.
Not a great test unless you can explain what kind of conditions you are shooting in. Lots of vertical dispersion. Is it from not taking into account updraft in the wind, poor rear support, or not taking into account compensated angle adjustments of the shot? There are so many questions that don’t get answered here.
Is that an old huskama scope?
It's probably 6 years old.
Looks Elk scat.
You are correct! Thanks for watching, appreciate it!
What load are you using?
Hornady 162 eldx
Bigfoot poop, same as under my apple tree.
Lol
that came from A deer about 225pounds
What part of Wyoming are you from?
Near Devils Tower
I am from Rawlins, Its very open hunting elk, deer and antelope. Ive killed some animals at some long ranges. this is a great video. I practice very often as well.
@brianreynolds1574 thanks for watching. I was lucky enough to draw Antelope area 57 last year and the year before. I saw over 150 bucks the first year and shot a nice one. Last year, I only saw 40 Antelope total on our trip. It's really sad on the winter kill down there.
I usually draw 61, I have a buddy that has the hunting rights to a ranch there. Ive hunted 57 quite a bit as well. The numbers have definitely been down. Its sad.
Are you only shoting static animals? I live in norway we mostly hunt deer that move
Try hitting some running deer/ elk
My hunters and I don't shoot at running deer. We wait till they are stopped. Thanks for watching. 👍
Deer sh.t
Close, think bigger.
As to the little berries those are what i call smart berries 😂 and with the first 3 shots i seen you take i knew you were going to hit high left by the wind blowing quarter to you from right to left an were your cross hairs were held on the target unless you made scope adjustment off camera but clearly didn't you might know but to anyone who doesn't any time the wind is in your face while shooting you will always impact higher than your aim point if its at your back you will hit lower than your aim point how much depends strictly on wind speed. So in my opinion unless you spend 100s of hours practicing at long range its not going to be an ethical shot passed 200yds with any thing more than a 3mph wind cause a 3 mph cross wind pushes 180gr 30cal bullet at standard velocity 6 to 8" at 300yds 🤷♂️ but again my opinion
6-8 inches at 300yds!!! What are you using a 30-30 🤣
First off, that’s a hill. Not a mountain.
Sasquatch poop
😆
You need to take in account the angle you are shooting. So brush up on your trig. If the range is 400 yrd doesn't mean its 400 depending on the angle..
Yes, I agree. Thanks for watching.
Talks constantly about the wind. Doesn’t bother to hold any wind.
Your skillset and your equipment aren’t cut out for long range hunting. Not that these distances would be considered long range hunting.
Whats the point on practice on static animals they normally move
My hunters and I don't shoot at running deer.
Thanks for watching.
Third. You’re sure walking a hell of a long ways to only be shaving 20 yards off between rounds what, 3 and 4? Come on now. Your content is showing us what you really know.
Second you’re cutting your videos on timings to second shot.
Promoting how to wound more game! Nothing else. 99 percent of all hunters will fail at 300 yards. Believe me!
I must have forgotten to turn the subtitles on. You must not have heard the word I said 20 times. PRACTICE.
You are exactly right, when you practice like this, you will know what your effective range is. Great job.
No thanks, I prefer to actually hunt and not take irresponsible shots on game. My average shots are under 150 yards. I have found too many wounded animals that idiots shot from distances they shouldn’t have been trying to take shots from.
You missed the point of the video. That is to practice and become better. Thanks for watching.
I love ignorant comments, makes me feel so much better about my self. I do worry about you though Mr houndsman…
@@Guidedhunts No, the point is, you’re promoting long range shooting of game animals which is going to lead to more injured, lost and wasted animals because of unforeseen circumstances from the shooter. Be ethical and keep it under 300 yards!
So your exactly right more people should practice like this for sure.
Now with the conditions you shot in I see 4 marginal/wounded deer hits and 1 flat out miss. And moving forward you saw a hole and were able to correct windage. So the big take is your max range in these conditions is 350 yards in, you made 4 clean kill shots... So that's you being a guide and I'm assuming very experienced so keep clients at 250 yards in same conditions.
Again this is a great learning tool, just except what the conditions and capabilities are telling you...
Keep these coming...
You cry a lot
Great video
Appreciate it, thanks for watching.
