Another great video. This is how working on your own bike REALLY goes. Always expect the unexpected, like pinched cables, bolts that don't fit, broken belts...and the satisfaction when things eventually come together.
It is very interesting to follow the project. I don't understand everything at once, I review it several times, but this is a question of my knowledge of the language. Subscribe for the convenience
I got carlini coming this week I hope. I’m waiting on my cables from magnum. I got 16’ flying apes and I hope the right cables. A 1 ‘ riser so I got 15 ton17 ‘ cables.
You should definitely get the solid bushings because of your bars being so tall you have a lot more leverage to bend the bolts on the triples And the solid bushings just reduce the flex so you can’t pull on the bar so much. I’ve seen those bolts break before with apes. And the poly bushings aren’t doing what there supposed to do the ones on that bike are already worn out.
My opinion on windshields: it depends on the bike and the look your going for. My 04 heritage softail classic looks good with the windshield because of that classic police bike look. But I've seen the same bike that had a different vibe in that a windshield would throw that off. I believe taller bars with a windshield clash a bit. I don't think you would often see a strected out bagger with a big ol' tall windshield on it. It's kinda like mounting Big Gertha on a bed of Atkins menus. Seems to cancel each other out!
Thank you so much for doing this. I have a 2018 King and I've been on the fence about doing this. Not any more. I'll be in touch for tips and suggestions, cant wait till is done.
Mine is a 01 classic and thinking about going 14” carlini gangsters , I’m only 5’8” and don’t want the bars too high . What bushing did he end up doing ? I don’t want that flex at all on mine …
That was the 1st thing I did was installed urethane bushings then I put the bars on. Far as mirrors flipped upside down didn't work for me all all I saw was my arm pits 😆. I like to know what I was doing wrong
Awesome video. But the bars have too much play that’s dangerous. Try to tighten the riser bushing bolt more. I have a 2019 deluxe cholo with carlini apes and I have zero play and I’m running Harleys polyurethane bushings.
I agree I had those black ones before & they did flex but nothing like that & when I swapped bars again went with hard red ones on j&p not one bit of flex! On
Did you and sam have to do any modifications to the riser cover in order for it to go over top the 1.50" bars and riser or did it still fit over everything without any modifications?
I have a 2000 RKC and I'm ordering 18 Carlini Gangsters tomorrow. I'm certain I won't like the look of my windshield with the new apes. I was riding without the screen through Baytown Tx and a rock hit me in the neck one night. I thought a MF'er shot me lol!! I'll be putting mine on for long trips for sure. Great vid guys!! Thank you.
About to go with some16" 1.5 carlini gangsters I found on CL for good deal. Wondering what 1.5 bar clamp you went with and how tall you are? I'm 5'11 and wondering if 16" too much??
@@JETFILMCHANNEL yea that definitely would slow things up, and windshields suck lol...... I took my off before I even unloaded it at my house and it been sitting in my garage ever since.....
What brand is that riser? Came to a problem installing my apes, need a riser because stock one is too narrow for the new 1.25” apes I’m trying to install. Thanks
Have a 2012 Road King I want to upgrade the handlebars, maybe not apes or at least not 16's, looking at Carlini 1 1/2 freeway bars. Everyone says this job is to not to bad to do yourself, I suppose with 2 guys and a shop full of tools, which I don't have. That flex would get my heart pounding with that movement, I couldn't stand that.
Like 10 bucks at home Depot or Lowe's can you buy yourself a pack of electrician wire label stickers you'll have the pack probably for the rest of your life and anytime you need to cut extend any sort of wire you could track it and also if you ever have a problem later down the road you know which wire goes where. Cool build dude.
I'm using "speed merchant" solid bushings and they've been solid since the day I installed them. But honestly I feel that solid bushings will practically never fail if they're seated properly at the time of install, regardless of brand. They're solid metal, not much can go wrong there.
I have a2003 road King I have my mirrors upside down I think it looks better and fish tails look and sound terrific. Windshields work good but I think they don't look good. I really enjoy your videos
John, what is your opinion using a windshield on the flying vs gangster? Im leaning toward flying but concerned the arc will need to push forward too much. Love the videos
Thanks man, I wrote you a lengthy message yesterday, but then I second guessed myself. (So many answers for this question) If you really like the flying apes then I'd do that. If you cant push them far enough forward then different risers could do the trick, but now we're talking more money. But I think the flying apes should work with a windshield because of the way they curve. But I think that once you have those apes on that bike you won't want to use the windshield anymore. It's a tricky question and I hope this helped a little. Thanks for the support, much more content coming early April.
I’m about to do an install video on these same bars, check out the video when it comes out bc your bars are not supposed to be that loose a d move like that brother. Aftermarket riser bushings are what solves this issue
I have a '13 Fat Boy, 14 inch Carlini's with LA Choppers solid bushings. No vibration at all. Also Carlini's measures their bars differently. Top of bar to bottom of bar mine measure 16. Top of the bottom of the bar to under the grip should be 16 for you.
Thanks, thats a great question. So considering that the road king is a generally larger bike than the softail, the 1.5"s look more natural on the King, without any degree of "awkwardness" or "out of place" looks, where the 1.5"s seem to look a bit overly large on a softail, and 1" looks a bit thin on a softail thats been dressed in Cholo accessories. In my opinion, the 1.25" apes are the perfect thickness for cholo softail.
Agree the flex is way too much shouldn’t really move at all need to get full polly bushings or solid ones and tighten them all the way down as much as you can. No more play and flex and still won’t feel the vibration up that high.
Heck yeah I’ve been waiting for this video! I didn’t know y’all were in Elmsford. I live in Pennsylvania and drive right by when I visit my gf who goes to Fairfield University! Right off the TappanZee!

With 12" bars I keep windshield on with the long rides, then take off when arrive at hotel/destination.
Love my windshield,
Those bushings are gonna wear out fast with that much play dude. Shoulda went solid. Looks rad tho. Good job.
I've been doing some research about the bushings, looks like you're supposed to cut down the center tube. So that you can clamp them down harder.
I have a 2001 road king classic and I’m going cholo with my build. These videos will give me some good ideas/guidance
Windshield for long trips if that’s your desire however I have rode my RK from Michigan to Mississippi and to NY without a Shield
The movement in the bushings would drive me nuts. They look flogged out!
You need some solid riser bushing. I just put them on mine and it rides so much better
This the realest shit I've seen all week. Thanks gents for keeping it real and showing how real men do shit.
