I am a mechanic and motorcycle enthusiast, and although I don't own one of Milwaukee's products (although I ride with several folks who do), I subscribed to your channel because of the common-sense instructions, humor, and excellent production quality. Your vids are simply enjoyable to watch...thanks, John!
Great video! I wish I would have seen it before I had my local dealer do my bars. They did not just replace the upper clutch cable half, but ordered a whole new "old" cable without the 2018 adjuster, so I had to pay for that plus a quart of Syn3 because they had to breech the transmission to install it, not to mention having to remove the lower half of the old one and reroute the new one! This seemed odd to me at the time because I thought the new cable was supposed to simplify handlebar jobs. I could have directed them to your video to see how it's supposed to be done. There were other problems with the job, too. If I lived near Chattahoochee, you would be doing all my work, that's for damned sure! Quality is such a very rare thing nowadays. I'm so glad to see it still survives in Columbus.
The bars look good John. Great video. It’s always interesting seeing people’s method of the internal wiring job. One of the most commonly asked questions is cable lengths. Your clutch cable looks just fine.
Nice handlebar install video, John. They look awesome too. I did notice that you struggled a little with pulling up the tag end of the electrical tape after pulling the wires through the bars. I am a retired commercial electrician and I have a tip for you that will make that part of the job much easier. When you wrap the tape the last thing you do is spin the tape roll two or three times to put a couple of twists in the tape before you break the tape from the roll. This gives you a small tail to grab onto to help with the unwrapping. Love your videos man.
All I want to say is I appreciate your work. I'm a highly trained professional/unprofessional as a governenment contractor working for the special operations forces weapons progam. I love to ride , I love to work on specialized weapons. Unfortunately I cannot ride as much as I'd love to but I really love your channel and as soon as I can I will stop by your shop just to say hey. I won't waste your time, I graduated from airborne school at Ft. Benning in 2010 prior to my combat deployment in early 2011. My first bike was a 79 iron head that was crap, I went to a 99 Yamaha 1800cc to a 2005 sportier 1200c to a brand new 17 street glide special through the military proram. Now it's 2019 and I have roughly 1200 miles on my bike due to my commitment to the SOF Forces.
Great vid! Quick "pro" tip for ya: When you blow your para-cord/ string through the bar (I only use para-cord because it's tough AF), if you tape off the holes at the opposite end (30 seconds of work), the string will blow right out of the centre hole and you won't have to fish for it. You might even be able to use the cheap electric tape for that! Keep the awesomeness coming!
John thanks for posting you are a real pro wish I lived closer to you about handlebars to each his own I could imagine riding 600 miles in the rain with those bars just my opinion
Super appreciate you showing the electrical tape and lube you used to pull the wires. I was a noob trying to pull it all through Yaffe bars and pretty much wanted to life deleted during that process.

Great video John, if only I had seen it before ordering the parts for my Sport Glide fiasco. Still in the middle of getting it straight, I ran into the the same issue with clutch cable you did. Looking up the parts, HD only gives part numbers for the 12-14" bars, nothing less than that. Plus their measuring system is faulty, as you discovered, the correct way to measure is the jacket length only. When I went to the local dealer to order the cable, I asked them if they had a chart with cable lengths and part numbers. They did not..... They claimed they did not have that info, yet the sheet with that info actually comes with each cable you order. Too bad it was way too long.. I actually believe the exact cable I need is the stock one for the Heritage, since they already come with taller bars than the SG. Then, on top of all that. I got the brake line, and it will not work because the connector is the opposite of what is actually needed.. WTF? I noticed you mentioned a brake line adapter, is that also needed? Naturally, the dealer had no clue, why do they do it that way? Why not just supply it with the correct fitting instead of making us buy a separate adapter? Wait, never mind, the answer is obvious.... Keep the very informative videos coming, we all greatly appreciate it!
Solid video and walkthrough, I have a Softail standard I want to put bars on. Fortunately they are the same height so I shouldn’t have too much cable hassle
Did a 18 street glide with those bars + heated grips. Those bars suck to pull the wire and make the bend! Finally baby powder’d the shit out of harness. Worked great 👍🏻

John, the new Carlin Handle Bars look great. Very informative video. Sucks that The Ornery One’s 2015 Road Glide and all their stuff was stolen at Daytona Bike Week.
Much cooler John, I like it! My next mods are the torque cam and some bars. Get rid of that windshield John! I have a 21" Freedom Shield on my 2018 FLHC and at 6'3" it made a huge difference eliminating all the buffeting and making the bike a much more capable tourer.....not to mention it looks a lot better IMHO.
Wow what an improvement John! We could tell in your voice how exited you were to get this long awaited job done! Great upgrade to a beautiful bike! .... what could possibly be next? Thanks John for bringing this to all of us!

JOHN, please read! Thanks for the great content. Here is my story: Got some aftermarket bars to do a bar swap myself on 2018 slim. Ordered cables from my local harley. Just picked up and it turns out they gave me a 1 piece clutch cable (I imagine this is like the cable off a twin cam model; says it fits my bike anyway). Should I live with this 1 piece cable or do you recommend hunting down a 2 piece to tie into stock cable? This is turning into a surprisingly difficult process and no one at 2 local harley dealers seem to be interested in helping! If you manage to read this thanks in advance, u the man.
Great channel man ! Like the no nonsense straight to the point info and excellent instructions. Just bought a FLHRXS and looking at audio options.. One would be to add paint matched fairing lowers with speaker pods and saddlebag speakers with amp or a handlebar option. Looking forward to your review of the speaker you have !
For those wanting to know about the upper clutch cable and part numbers. I contacted several local dealerships and they don’t seem to have this info. The stock 2018+ Heritage Softail upper clutch cable is 35”. I added 14” bars to mine and went with a 40” upper clutch cable (due to national backorder on the 39” cable). The 40” cable fits great and super easy to install. The HD upper clutch cables 2018+ Softails are as follows: 37” - 37200326 38” - 37200380 39” - 37200381 40” - 37200382 41" - 37200327 42" - 37200383 43" - 37200384 44" - 37200385 Hope this info helps
@@jeffbruno1605 If he mentioned 44", it may have been the wrong one he ordered in the video. The 40" I installed on my bike looks just right. a 44" cable on 14" bars would be WAY too much. I will try and post a picture of mine later today. Not sure if I can even post a pic.
@@jeffbruno1605 I ordered Magnum Shielding handlebar kit for my bars. I did not realize that the clutch cable was a 1 piece replacement. I wanted to keep the 2 piece stock setup. The brake line though worked out great. Here's the link to where I ordered it. You could contact Magnum Shielding to get the exact brake line part number. @@jeffbruno1605 Correct. I bought the Magnum kit, then realized it was a 1 piece. I then ordered the upper clutch cable separately from Harley. I did a lot of internet searching to come to a conclusion that the stock cable is 35". Internet pics kept showing up with a Harley page with part numbers. Based on a 35" stock cable and adding 4" taller bars. I figured I needed a 39" cable. Those were on backorder, so I figured it was better to go longer than shorter. Which is why I ordered the 40"
@@jeffbruno1605 I installed KST Double Troubles. When deciding on how much longer cables I needed, I just figured 4" taller bars = 4" longer cables www.kstkustoms.com/collections/softail-dyna/products/double-trouble-1?variant=32225571596
John Idea for a vid. Differences and characteristics between high profile and low profile tires. And why Harley puts low-pros on say the Road Glide Special but high-pros on the Road Glide Ultra.
I have a 2018 Heritage softail classic 114 also I see y you changed the handle bars harley put cheap junk for bars on there bike am going to change mine to and get some different ones with less vibration. Thanks you John
John, you should have a party when hit 100K subscribers! Keep up the great and useful content. I'm looking into changing the handlebars on my RKS so this is very useful video. Thanks, man!
I also recently started following Blockhead because I'd love to ride with you guys and I do not live far from Orlando, just west toward Clermont. Not pine Hills!!

Hi John this is Srinivasan from India I have xl 883 L sportster 2016 model and I want to change high lift handlebar which model is suitable for my bike kindly advise me sir
theChestnutMtnTinman was gonna ask if KST are one of the companies John was talking about not being great. How did you find running the cables? I’m close to buying 12 in mayhems for my SGS
Literally just finished installing 14” Z-Bars on my 2010 FXDWG, so now I’m watching a “highly trained, unprofessional” do it so I can see how it should be done. Instead of taking me like a month to do my own
Great videos man! One of the few on yt who manages to teach somwthing while still promoting their stuff. One quick question, I ride a 2012 883 myself and was wondering about differences in installing apes on that model (wiring ect) don't know if you've already done a video on that topic. Anyways thumbs up from switzerland and ride on!
John. I have the same bike and I follow your thoughts around pipes and bar, looking forward to see what you do next. You are a big inspiration! Ps! I have the same pipes as you and had the dealer remove the last part of the inside when it was new and before tuning (one screw and easy to remove,' and can be reversed if you want to), it helped a lot and gave a deeper "rumble". Please share if you have any thoughts around it. Safe Ride!
I had the same issues with my clutch cable as well on a 2018 softail slim handle bar install. Ended up having to go and get the cable shorten by a reputable source.
It's been a challenge to find tall(ish)apes with a shorter pullback. Checked Carlini, great looking stuff, but the shortest pullback i saw was 7 inches. I'm a little on the tall side, and looking for 5-6 inch max. Looks like i'll have a set made for me by a local fab shop. Love those bars though!
You missed the most interesting part: wire extensions install. We encountered a lot of trouble with them today and still haven't figured out, how to make them fit into the frame, because they seem way too long for the size of the handlebars. But I ordered everything according to Harley instructions list. And then there are those connectors, that bulge so much. So I was hoping for some tip on how to use the extensions, and there was none *sigh*
Love it man.... I want to add some bars to my Springer..... Doesn't look like Carlini have Springer bars.... Where would you recommend i look for some good quality ones?
AWESOME bars John!! I am sure it drove you crazy to have all that extra cable!! LOLZ I am pretty ADD about anything I do on my bikes so I would have been losing my stuff!!!
Great video. You have given me the confidence to change the bars on my Road Glide. I’m glad I’ve got a hydraulic clutch thought 👍🏻 PS The bars look great on your Heritage.
Would you please tell me what measurements you got for your clutch and brake lines(preferably the correct clutch measurement rather than the incorrect one Harley "helped" you get :)? I have the same bike and am looking at the same handlebar set (your setup looks perfect). Thanks, and thank you for the videos. new sub
Love the videos. Makes me want to ride my Harley every time I watch.......... One thing I notice though your always out of fuel lol..... Keep up the good work my man.
One of the best upgrades so far was installing new bars not only do they give your bike a nice custom look they really add comfort to the ride. Great install I like how you organized everything. Two questions I'm starting to use my iPhone with a Ram mount what tips do you have for keeping it secure? Speaking of Daytona and the story of the Ornery One what is the best way to lock and secure your bike? Thanks
I’m not a huge fan of the ram mount because it needs the rubber safety band thing, too (that’s the only thing I’ve ever seen and added security to the ram mount). I actually forgot to “close” my Ciro mount heading to Daytona. Freeway speeds, and it didn’t budge. As far as the ornery one, I think if 4 guys want your bike, they’re going to get it. Disc locks, fork locks, security system and siren doesn’t stop a few guys from picking it up and throwing it in a van! A security system with gps might help you recover it, though! I have no experience with any of them, though.
Just wanted to say thanks. After watching ur video 1 time I installed my 16" monkey bars in 3 hours without a problem.... except I fished weed eater wire through the bars which seemed easier for me but haven't had a single problem and was a really easy job
Hey john love the channel! Just subscribed. The bars look perfect for your bike. I just had a set of apes installed on my 19 slim here at Adamac in Jacksonville. I was wondering if you have and plans for a fan meetup / group ride in the future? Thanks for all you do bud!
John, I’m thinking this or menace apes on my 2020 Fatboy 30th. (First Harley)I’m thinking 1.5 inch cause as you said, fat front, fat bars. Thanks for your tips.
Great Video John! Goes into a lot more depth than other vid's out there. I want to mount a Sportster EFI tank onto my 2006 EFI Softail, have you got a video on this mod? I already have the tank, a genuine Harley 3.3 gal with the EFI fuel pump mounting hole. If I purchase a new Sportster 1200 fuel pump, will it do the job for me?
Hi John. Love your channel and videos. I'm hoping you can lend me your expertise. My wife has a 2018 XL1200NS and she says the stock mini apes are not comfortable. I was thinking that the 10 inch Carlini Evil apes like you have would be a better option, especially since I don't want to switch to shorter cables. What do you think? Would something else be a better fit?
re: brake/clutch measurement tool....just go get some higher-end speaker or power/ground wire from your local car audio shop. Most of the time (check first) it has 12 inch marks on it built into the jacket. Get 15 feet or so, and you can sub-divide it with a sharpie if you need better than "eh, that's about 6 inches or so" resolution.
Hi John, I’m hoping you can help! My hubby has changed handles twice before and everything went well, however he has just attempted to change mine on my 2021 softail slim. We bought the extensions cables and he connected them all…… for some reason nothing worked on the left hand side, horn, main beam, signal light. Took all the connector cables off and put it back as was and still not working. Do you have any idea what’s gone wrong???
Hi John! After soldering the wire throttle appears the error P1510 (safe mode) and P2127 (TGS 2 low/open) and P2138 (TGS correlation error) I live in Madeira Island in the middle of the Atlantic with no HD support. Can you get me a code to remove those codes? thanks!
Is a wire kit, clutch cable kit, and brake line kit from a handlebar builder gonna suit me? Is HD stuff better? I like the Carlini bars. Almost as sexy as their swimsuit model. Good taste!
Hey John! Thanks for all the great content! I don't ride yet, but will here in the next year or so...I would love to see a review or comparison on the Daymaker 7in adaptive headlight vs the JW Speaker 7in adaptive. Just an idea for you on content, and I don't see that comparison anywhere on TH-cam or web! Thanks for the tech stuff! Love it!
Since you are in a hot riding area are you gong to install a fan assisted oil cooler? The HD part is really well priced. Do you know if the HD fan assisted oil cooler have to be programmed after installed? Thanks for the vids!
Hey John, 1st of I love your videos. I’ve learned a lot by watching your vids. I just bought a 2019 Fatboy 114. I’m thinking about upgrading my handle bars to either 12 inch mini apes or 14’s. I’m 5’11 about 185 lbs. I went to numerous dealerships asking what parts I would need. Everyone keeps giving me different answers. From “you don’t need anything” to “you need everything”. It amazes me how I get such different answers from “certified Harley techs”. 🤔 Maybe you can help me? 12 inch mini apes (Official Harley P&A) what add-ons do I need? As far as clutch, brake, and electrical wires. I figured my bike is just like yours (Heritage softail, Fatboy softail) Thank you in advance.
It would be very helpful to a lot of us if you make a video of the ignition switch and wat could go wrong if your not careful. I took off my switch on my road glide and in not able to put it back on. I’ve done it before, but this time it won’t seat properly and it doesn’t rotate right. The bike does turn on. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Magnum Shield handlebar kit #486961. www.denniskirk.com/magnum-shielding/black-xr-handebar-control-cable-kit-for-use-12-14-ape-hangers-w-abs-486961.p1916487.prd/1916487.sku
@@jeffbruno1605 I'll try and get one posted or send me an email address to send it to
@@jeffbruno1605 Correct.
Those Carlinis looks awesome buddy. Keep up the good work. Great filming quality also!! When I get my carlinis hopefully you can do the install.
John
Idea for a vid. Differences and characteristics between high profile and low profile tires. And why Harley puts low-pros on say the Road Glide Special but high-pros on the Road Glide Ultra.
I have a 2018
Heritage softail classic
114 also I see y you changed the handle bars harley put cheap junk for bars on there bike am going to change mine to and get some different ones with less vibration. Thanks you John
Those bars look great on the Heritage. Thanks
John, you should have a party when hit 100K subscribers! Keep up the great and useful content. I'm looking into changing the handlebars on my RKS so this is very useful video. Thanks, man!
Looks loads better. Good work bro. Quality video as always. 🤙🏾
I also recently started following Blockhead because I'd love to ride with you guys and I do not live far from Orlando, just west toward Clermont. Not pine Hills!!
Love your videos John. Ready to get back to riding this summer
Hey John, way cool vlog, those new bars look fantastic 😎😃👍
Thanks a ton doing a 01. Heritage and def want cruise thanks for the advice also goin. 1 1/2. Heritage like u mentioned glad I came across your video thanks bro. ✌️
Hi John this is Srinivasan from India I have xl 883 L sportster 2016 model and I want to change high lift handlebar which model is suitable for my bike kindly advise me sir
Love your bars. I put 10” KST Mayhems on my Ultra Ltd and love them.
theChestnutMtnTinman was gonna ask if KST are one of the companies John was talking about not being great. How did you find running the cables? I’m close to buying 12 in mayhems for my SGS
KST is the company that makes Harley-Davidson’s factory bars. I didn’t install them but Brian who owns Crossroads Custom uses them exclusively.
Hey John. Could you recommend the Tallest Size Evil APES I can go, and still keep Stock Wiring? 2018 Heritage Classic.Thanks.
Heated grips are a must IMHO . You never know when you might need them.
That handlebar job on your bike looks like a lot of labor I have a 2017 road glide and I have 14 in bars on mines nice work
Thanks for the video brother, always enjoy watching you videos, how tall are you and what size apes did you get?
I just put heritage bars and avon grips on my 05 king custom. Was easy cause didnt have to change any cables or wires
Nice bars John ,great video as usual .
I need some bars for my 2012 Road Glide with very little grip angle. More like a dirt bike grip angle but this type of bars.
Max. We miss you
Great vid! May I have the clutch cable part number for 2018+ models? Looks more convenient than replacing entire cable line.
Thanks, and thank you for the videos. new sub
Bars look great man!!! Love the video. A lot of good info.
Your handlebars looks great! Enjoy John... 👊🏼😎
those bars look sick! nice job
Love the videos. Makes me want to ride my Harley every time I watch.......... One thing I notice though your always out of fuel lol..... Keep up the good work my man.
John this video tells me to have a job like this done by a highly trained unprofessional instead of a noob like me.
😂 it’s good to know your limitations!
Great video. Awesome bars. Are you going to find a place to mount the windshield bag?
Thanks you’re the best
Looks sick man. Keep up the great work!
@8:32, what a slick trick! You rock! Love the videos 👍
John, I’m thinking this or menace apes on my 2020 Fatboy 30th. (First Harley)I’m thinking 1.5 inch cause as you said, fat front, fat bars. Thanks for your tips.
Hello there good video
Now much you think will be to do that job on a breakout 2017,? My brother.thanks keep it up
Great Video John!
This of course brings up issues with removing the old speedo & dash panel. What items & how to replace them.
Take off windshield and bags. Slap on some big radius Vance and Hines pipes and she’ll look awesome.
Really like your humor John! Great video too!
re: brake/clutch measurement tool....just go get some higher-end speaker or power/ground wire from your local car audio shop. Most of the time (check first) it has 12 inch marks on it built into the jacket. Get 15 feet or so, and you can sub-divide it with a sharpie if you need better than "eh, that's about 6 inches or so" resolution.
Solid!
Love it!
Soon as I find about $1600 for both the lights, I'm on it!
Bars look awesome man
Since you are in a hot riding area are you gong to install a fan assisted oil cooler? The HD part is really well priced. Do you know if the HD fan assisted oil cooler have to be programmed after installed? Thanks for the vids!
WE MISS YA BROTHER
Hey John, 1st of I love your videos. I’ve learned a lot by watching your vids. I just bought a 2019 Fatboy 114. I’m thinking about upgrading my handle bars to either 12 inch mini apes or 14’s. I’m 5’11 about 185 lbs. I went to numerous dealerships asking what parts I would need. Everyone keeps giving me different answers. From “you don’t need anything” to “you need everything”. It amazes me how I get such different answers from “certified Harley techs”. 🤔
Maybe you can help me? 12 inch mini apes (Official Harley P&A) what add-ons do I need? As far as clutch, brake, and electrical wires. I figured my bike is just like yours (Heritage softail, Fatboy softail)
Thank you in advance.
Thanks!
I am very grateful for your videos John!!
The cup holder...brilliant!!!
