I have 14 Pro Max and I think the Pro Raw is great, I simply edit on the native camera app on Auto, and tweak a little more if needed I have the free LR App but find the native app just as good for me. I’m glad you saw the potential, eventually Evan! 👌🏻😊🇬🇧

Photographers are their own worst enemies, noticing every last tiny flaw in their images. There will always be limitations of machines that take pictures, but 99% of the population looks past it. Great images shot in the early 1960s, are still great images, regardless in shortcomings of the tiny details relating to sharpness or contrast. I use my phone much more than I do my professional photo gear. I would probably never miss my Canon 5D iv, it's way too heavy to have with me 99% of the time.

Extremely sharp and photorealistic images with perfect exposures in monochrome have been possible virtually since photography was invented. I think it’s a misconception that we are only now achieving such high detail because of digital technology. I think really we have only just now reached a point at which our ability to convert analog input (light) into digital data and a subsequent image is now comparable in image quality to more traditional light capturing and printing methods. That’s my big stance and I’m stickin’ to it!

My opinion on the benefit of cameras getting so good on phones: I had to stop doing photography at one point because I was broke and could not afford the camera or film (yes I am that old and have been doing it that long). This removes the financial barrier.

I’m glad you took this second look. Like you, I don’t expect the iPhone to replace any of my cameras, but it does seem that Apple has made significant strides in improving their camera and processing system. I’ve been making do with an 11 Pro Max and have placed an order for the 14 Pro Max and am looking forward to experimenting with it, particularly in Pro Raw.

I guarantee you will get the camera out less and less… daytime long exposures, high dynamic ranges where the photo engine ensures a far more balanced and natural exposure than a pre edited camera image.

11 pro was the first time I was really awestruck with mobile photography. I thought the 14 Pro would be an iterative upgrade but the night shots on this phone (and I only have the smaller one, not the Max) are incredible. The Night Shift or whatever now only takes like 2-3 seconds max to literally get actual stars to show in the shot with very minimal noise. Insane man

Harper‘s Bazaar already did a professional campaign with the 11 Pro cam back in 2019 and the photos looked outstanding. This camera is everything you need for 99,7 % of the people. It is capable of more things most of the average guy really needs.

I greatly appreciate that you take pride in admitting when you’re wrong. I too, am like that. I’m focused on being a better human and to do that requires me to accept that I will never know everything or be right always. Also loved the images you made from the iPhone 14. I have the 13 Pro Max and I’ve managed to make some incredible images with it. I might do an iPhone photography Slow Gaze video sometime.

great video highlighting some key aspect why 14 pro capability is tier above the previous iphones including 13 pro. To me, the major thing is the significantly improved raw file 14 pro you mentioned. 13 pro's raw was your typical phone raw bs that I called fake raw. You can't manipulate the colors and light w/o destroying the scene. The tolerance is so low. From the sample files(gathered online) I played around with, 14 pro's raw is next level in terms of mobile photography and a game changer in my mind. Will begetting it and testing it in Tokyo in a month or so. Can't wait.

I agree that photographers aren’t going to show up to shoots with just an iPhone, but during the pandemic, virtual shoots became a way for photographers to create and companies to have the photos that they needed. These shoots were done by the photographer and model connecting through an app that allows the photographer to shoot through the other person’s cellphone camera. It was used by Vogue, New Yorker Magazine, Chanel and others. I’ve done several shoots this way, including one with someone who was 10,000 miles away from me. If you’re not needing huge prints, this is a very viable way to shoot, and there are photographers, especially outside the U.S., who are shooting this way exclusively even now.

I enjoyed your video! Even though I don't have a iPhone I do have a Pixel 3A and recently moved up to a Pixel 5A 5G. Cell phones have strengths and weaknesses like you mention and the same cane be said about cameras. But the convenience and weight and size of a cell phone it's understandable why some cameras are being replaced by a cell phone.
    Best wishes

If you wanna get rid of the super digital look use a third party app like halide and shoot in standard raw. You can expose like a traditional camera (aside from aperture) and the images are more natural. Only caveat I see with this is in challenging light conditions the lack of computational photography can kill the image with a lot of extra noise. In good light I love it, in low/challenging light I’d use the stock camera app.

Having a designated iPhone for only the Camera is a totally Genius idea. You don't have to waste any battery on anything else except the camera that you're using. You don't have to worry about interruptions. You don't take up storage on your real phone. That's really just a totally great idea for real mobile photographers. I own the 14 Pro Max for myself but it's literally ginormously huge. So I would love to buy the Regular Pro and use it as my Camera and MP3 player. That would be awesome if I could afford it lol.

I dont get why we have to compare a mobile device with a DLSR camera. I really dont. When was ever the point of a phone to replace a professional camera that costs 3-4 times as much as said phone? Who expects something like that? Why is it even a question that has to be asked in almost every review out there. It baffles me really. This is a phone camera. It should be judged as a phone camera. It cant be better than a DLSR, it is not possible, it has a tiny lens... i dont get why we expect from a phone to do such things. The fact that this tiny camera can produce such imagery is nothing sort of an engineering marvel and should be celebrated as such. Nto something to replace a professional camera. Stop asking that question guys...
