    I like the Passport, too. But you're correct in that Honda is wrong in trying to market the Passport against the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Not the same. However, I might be willing to give up some off road capability to gain better reliability. Today's Jeeps scare me. I have 2 neighbors who own Grand Cherokees and they are both in agreement in recommending getting the extended warranty. That tells me something.

    • @NukePooch1
      @NukePooch1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      On the bottom of Honda Passport's webpage, is "Why the Passport beats the Grand Cherokee". I agree that they shouldn't be trying to go up against the GC, but they are... I also agree with the unreliability of the Jeep. My bro just traded in his 2014 GC sue to neverending transmission problems.

      I love Jeep's, but it's tough to beat Honda vehicles with their reliability and resale value. They are built very tough in my opinion. I've done quite a bit of off-roading in my old 06 accord and never had any issues. This passport looks way better than the old passport lol.

    Guys great video however I need disagree with you guys. I rather have V6 over 4 cylinder turbo engine. First the mileage is basically the same. Second V6 last much longer than turbo engine. I pick a V6 over turbo any day. Especially I drive a lot on highway and the V6 quieter and smoother than turbo 4.

    • @Viewsfromhere
      @Viewsfromhere 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The engine in the edge is almost silent. Effortless acceleration. I came from a pathfinder and then a murano because I was scared of the turbo 4s but when I realized that Audi, BMW and Mercedes are all using the 2.0 twin scroll turbo I decided to give it a try and it was quite amazing. The torque is so low on the rev range it makes the driving experience really different. Even at higher speeds the acceleration is so effortless.

      Edge 25mpg, Honda 22mpg with comparable vehicle weight.
      Turbos while they are more complex and expensive (and likely less reliable long term), do get better fuel economy which is why auto makers are going more towards them (and CVTs). Although that improved fuel economy goes out the door with turbos if you have a heavy foot 🤔

    I test drove a Passport and agree with your assessment. The Passport is best of the 3, except for the ride. The Passport ride is stiff, Ridgeline and Pilot ride so much better. Price, Passport is the value. Murano, CVT, so-slow, and $44k, no way. Ford, $48k, too much.

      They mention the 20" wheels. With big wheels and thin rubber, it's going to be a rough ride. If not for the low MPG, I would buy this car and the first thing I would do is put 17" wheels on in. Smoother ride, better in snow, and better MPG.

    We just traded in our 2018 Edge for a Passport. The Edge was a good car for us and gave us no trouble. It was quiet and comfortable and the two liter engine provided enough power for us and fuel economy was good. Despite being quite inside it turned out to be a poor road trip car because of the interior - it form over function. In particular there are no flat surfaces to set anything on and the storage cubbies just are not that usable. Opening the console is disruptive to the driver and the seats are too close to the door for easy access to the cubbies. The other issue was visibility, especially out the windshield due it's slope and the weird upturns at the edge of the hood. Passport isn't a quite inside and it probably won't get the same mpg, but the interior is far superior.

    I have been driving a 2013 Edge limited since july 2012. It has been the absolute most reliable car I have ever owned since 1983. Close to 200 000km on the dial, and have only changed brake pads( 3 front, 2 back ) since new ; still on original brake rotors ! Minimal maintenance done, it has been driven almost entirely in Montreal where roads are atrocious at best ( potholes that can swallow cars), often driven to my friend’s cabin up north, sometimes uphill with 18 inches of snow etc.... it is Canadian built at the Oakville plant So, almost 8 years of beating around = not a single trip to the dealership for repairs. Nothing is sexy about it, I get my kicks from my Mustang GT convertible. Hate to admit it, but probably going to buy another one this summer.

    I have an Accord with the pushbutton gear selector, after having that, I feel old style gear lever is a relic. The pushbutton (or rotary knob) frees up valuable console space and makes the cabin feel more roomy. The only reason people like the old gear lever is that's what they probably grew up with, times change, have an open mind, the pushbutton or rotary gear selector is just plain better.

    How many times have you heard of someone accidentally not putting their vehicle into Park when they get out? The pushbutton shift in the Honda probably adds their safety feature of automatically putting it into park if you stop and open the driver's door. Times are changing... automatic transmission shifters have just been switches for a long time, and a big lever is not needed to close a little switch. Maybe you also still want the crank on the front of the grill, and the levers behind the steering wheel to adjust spark advance and throttle?

    I think that the real value proposition for the Edge comes in one year after it has left the lot, as Titanium AWD units are going for 10,000 less than MSRP with 1 year and 15k miles. While to a new car buyer the high resale of the Passport seems like it would be great, the value perspective shows that you get a lot of car for the money with a used Edge.

    Really super review ..... Your candid comments about each vehicle are so direct and helpful to get a great feel of these SUV's without driving them ourselves ... Any other comparisons on Crossovers (SUV's) would be wonderful. How about going to the luxury end as well with the Acura RDX, Cadillac XT4 & 5, Volvo XC 60..... Thanks for what you do! ps: I think a rotary shifter is the new trend .... and a good one as it is quick and easy ... convenient space saving and >> SAVES EFFORT ON CRANKING A LEVER UP AND DOWN.

    Go with a 2018 Ford Edge Sport. You get a 2.7 EcoBoost (2 Turbo) with 315hp and 350ft lbs of torque. You also get a real gear shift lever (vs the rotary phone dial....) rest of interior is pretty much the same. Oh and I went with the 21in rims that look amazing (albeit with loss of some ride comfort). Way better than the Nissen or the Honda in this segment (although the Honda WILL certainly last LONGER). Oh and for those who talk about off road ability... .02% of these vehicles will EVER be taken "off road" (mine included). If you want to go "off road" get a Jeep or Land Rover.

    The Murano CVT is geared too high from a standstill which hurts its 0-60 time, but when rolling from about 25 or 30 it is responsive. Passing performance is good.
    The CVT needs a wider range of ratios than this one has.

    You guys still reviewing SUV’s as if they were Sport sedans. The people buying this cars don’t care about 0-60 numbers I’m not saying not to include them but let’s give more attention to comfort features and practically.
    For ex you showed the Murano has 360• cameras what about the Ford and Honda?
    At the end of the day that’s what makes the difference when choosing one suv over the others, apart from looks and price.

    Good video guys! I test drove a lot of vehicles in this segment. And ultimately went with an Edge ST. I am REALLY pleased with my purchase. I wanted a family hauler with some umph. Sure it may be a little pricey, that doesn’t bother me in the least. I laugh at people who comment it’s not a real ST. Yeah it is cause Ford says so. There’s a lot more to an ST than just it’s engine. People judge vehicles without even driving them, they base their decision on what others tell them. Gimme a break.

    • @malifestro7596
      @malifestro7596 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And what will become obvious later on is that the 2.7l is SO over built for the Edge that it will run a super long time. That engine design is top notch. Might be the best engine Ford makes. Look under it and it's stuffed full of aluminium components that won't rust and are lighter weight. I also have a Ford Edge but mine is a year older and a Sport. Zero problems so far. Probably the best road trip GT crossover out there at this price. This thing loves to fly down interstates at 85-90 mph and you'll still get 24-25 mpg. Keep it at 65 and you'll get 27. Great vehicle IMO.

    I have the Passport Elite AWD. Love it, but I also don’t like the push button gear shifter, and so when I want to take control of the gearing I use the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Why didn’t you guys make mention of those shifters? The Passport up and hauls when you want it to and use those paddle shifters and a heavy right foot. Still, I am not totally a fan of paddle shifters either because when you are cornering the damned things move around with the steering wheel. Gimme a +/- auto stick shifter. I also don’t like the black treatment - especially on the front end - but then I don’t have to look at it when I’m driving, so I can live with it. I personally like the look of the dual exhaust pipes on the rear end. I love the handy kick-your-foot-under-the-rear-end feature to open the rear hatch when your hands are full because it seems like my hands are always full when loading things into the back end. This feature should be on all SUV’s and CUV’s not just on the top line Elite model Hondas. I also like the push button folding side view mirrors for parking in tight spaces. This too should be standard and not solely on the top line Honda Elite trim. Also, you should be able to program them to fold and unfold when driver turns the car on and off rather than having to remember to do it manually. Very handy. Only thing is that I am finding that the mirrors don’t return to exactly the same position when folding them back out, so I am constantly having to make minor adjustments. PITA! One other thing: I hate the engine-off-at-stops being standard. It should be a driver’s-choice selectable feature rather than having to push a button to opt out of it. It should be disabled unless the driver wants to push a button to opt in. I doubt this feature actually saves gas unless you are in a situation where you are sitting idle for long periods of time - as in sitting in a fast food drive through waiting behind some jerk who has 15 kids in an SUV who can’t make up their minds what to order, then once they order it takes 15 minutes to serve it up, or sitting behind someone who orders a 10 course meal while all you want is a drink, burger and fries. That’s when you might save gas with the auto engine-off feature. I love all the safety features offered on the Honda. BTW Honda provides these features on their entire line - not just on the top trim models. The only safety feature I don’t like is when the car decides to take over the steering when there is no reason to! I feel like I am playing tug-of-war with the steering wheel! What’s up with that? So there you have it - a review from someone who actually owns the Passport. I previously owned a 2014 Mercedes ML350. The Honda Passport has almost all the features the Benz had plus more safety features than MB. Of course the newer Benz probably has more now. The one thing MB had that blows away the Honda - the most comfortable seats ever! My crotchety old back loved the Benz seats! The Honda - not so much. I feel it on long drives in LA rush hour traffic. Will probably be back to Benz for next vehicle, solely because of the seat comfort. Wish I could get a Mercedes seat transplant into the Honda! 😂

    Like who cares about the shifter. It’s not a manual. Get over it and save the space. As for design, that’s subjective. And we should not be talking about “sporty” in this category. Also, I prefer larger infotainment screens. May be just me, but I hate the look of the minivan, I mean the Passport. Don’t the Edge’s seats recline too?

    What does the 0-60 have to do with SUV's. I think of them as family vehicles for traveling. I have a 2018 Nissan Murano, and it rides smooth, and with plenty of pep, if I need it for passing, or getting out of situations . The seats are exceptionally comfortable, they use memory foam like cushion to reduce fatigue, when driving long distance.(zero gravity seat). I was cruiseing 65 mph; and the tachometer was at 1400 RPM. Thanks to the CVT's economy design. If you care about what it does from 0-60. Buy a sports car!

    They didn't mention the mpg is less on the Pilot than that Edge. Also, mentioning the black wheels. Edge ST has and is faster, plus looks sportier than the Pilot. Suspension better on the Edge for smoother ride. The reason they fit better is the Pilot is 3-4" wider - good for big guys. I'm 5 4", better for Edge - Plus fits in a single car garage better. Everyone has different needs - they all are pretty good for individual needs.
