Have been wanting to record dedicated tutorials for the Elektron Digitakt for months now and finally had some time to record them. Yes this is the first in a series. I have loads of tutorial ideas for Digitakt and this is the first one. Past year I got a lot of questions about my workflow on the Digitakt so I hope to answer those questions in these video's.
This video is all about how to keep things interesting during a live performance within one pattern. Each groove I create in Digitakt consists of up to 4 patterns max and most of the time I use just one pattern and keep it interesting with the tips I give in this video.

@@grandmasterjo1 I probably will share some of them as a learning process for the paid course I'm going to create. I simply cannot give them away as they are personal projects of mine that I actually use in my live-set. It would be like asking a professional painter to show you how he works by painting one of your rooms for free. ;). A lot of the techniques I already share for free in most of my video's :)

Thnxs dave! Great tutorial. Does somebody know why when I try to reload the saved temporaily pattern I can access again to it but the mute/unmuted function is not working?????
AFAIR, there's also a way to latch the fill only for one full pattern length (without the need to hold the button) wich is also useful if you want to make a break-style fill while having your hands free for mutes or other kinds of manipulations ;)
Correct. You can do this by first pressing yes, hold, then press page. :)

There is actually a way to "control all" for several tracks (instead of all 8): use a midi loop and set desired tracks to the same midi channel, then set up one of the midi tracks so it will control parameters you need and now you can mess with just drums (for example).
Yeap that'll do it. Also gives you loads of extra lfo's etc. Doesn't fit I to my live-set workflow but it is nice. In the following weeks I'm releasing a video or videos exploring the possibilities with 2 DTs and this is one of the things.
Dont have Digitakt, but does control all change parameters on sound locks? If I remember correctly on digitone control all changes only track sounds not sound locks.
You should definitely release a sample pack of kicks + bass + stabs etc... they sound very clean! Perhaps a video on how you process them for the digitakt? cheers!

Depends a bit on which machines. I have two Digitakts and a Digitone and work like that on all three. It's hard work haha. It's doable. You just need to think about what you want to achieve live with those machines and program them in such a way that it is doable live. Like using perfmance macros and scenes on the rythm for instance is a great way of keeping things moving and easy to do live.

Great video! Could you show how you build a track from scratch on the DT? Do you usually use more than one sound per track (p-locking samples)?
It's something I really want to do for some time now, but I'm not sure yet how. It would result in a video of about two hours if I'd do it in real time, so maybe a live stream every now and then would be nice. Let's see :)

I'd add another one to the list. Use your LFO to trigger random Sample Slots. Keep the depth parameter very subtle.
Not something I use live in a live situation. I do us it sometimes for the grooves I create. It's a great modulation destination for sure :). Will try it out when jamming sometime to see what happens!
Maybe you could make a video explaining how do you make a track like this one? I meant, musically speaking. The rhythms, stabs, pads...etc. Actually this song is pretty cool. We would really grateful!!
I'm thinking about doing a live stream every now and then where I build a groove from scratch. Could be a 2 hour thing. Might have to do a poll to see if enough people would like such a long video / stream

I like making a bank with similar samples in and then assigning sample select to lfo 🙂👍🏻 thats my only tip since owing one after 24 hours lol

Are these sounds all DT made (after self made samples) or also with your MFB synth?
I use a combination of many things really. Some stabs are from the Dominion. I design kicks with different things, like the kick 2 vst. I also design some pads or other sounds with vst synths or Digitone, and of course sample a lot of real world sounds. Here and there I use some bread and butter sounds like 909 hats. In the DT I'll edit samples further , sometimes beyond recognition. Keep an eye on the channel. I ha e multiple videos coming up about this.

Dave, teach us how to make this groove, it got so incredible, I'm facing a creative block here and I'm looking for a similar result to that sound, but I'm not getting it, I need help ....

Keep going at it dude, try rigorous different approaches , try nee things you havent tried yet, use your home as a sample source etc. You can keep the creative juices flowing by trying new stuff with what you have around you.

Hi Dave, nice Video as always :) one question: is it now possible with OB to save projects/songs with all the samples and everything, or transfer them between 2 Digitakt`s?
Unfortunately not yet. But a project manager is going to be implemented down the line for certain.
That would be amazing, maybe finally in the Alpha Version. Would be also great for my RTYM :) hope the best!

Hi, great to hear you love the sound. Bit hard to explain in a single post as it's a pretty layered process. I'm working on a way to share this type of in depth knowledge but it will take some time before I'm able to release that. It will probably be through something like patreon as it will be a lot of work.
Hey Dave! Great tips and video once again! I wanted to ask for the video, did you record the digitakt with overbridge in a daw? Or just the stereo output? Or you just recorded the sound from the speakers with the mic? and btw I noticed you don’t use panning a lot you prefer to make the tracks in mono style? sorry for asking too much hehe Im just curious! 👀

I do use panning a lot. Maybe not as much for this particular groove although I’m pretty sure I used at least on one of the tracks an LFO on panning I think. But it’s a long time ago :)

Hi Dave! When you perform with multiple Elektron boxes, are you flipping patterns on each one? This is one thing I can’t wrap my head around. It seems that it would be too complicated. If you covered this in any video(s), can you point me to which one(s)? Thank you!
Only just saw this now :). Yeah I do indeed. That way I have freedom over which patterns to mix through each other across instruments. You can use midi program changes if you want patterns to change all at once on multiple boxes but I personally don’t like that very much.
And if I wanted to record this as a track while I am keeping everything exciting. How would I go about that?

Hi Attila, thank you for your interest in the course :). In part 1 I do start with going through the start of a new project, unloading stock samples, loading samples into a project and more. Patterns are covered in later parts briefly to add to the workflow of copying and working on specific elements. If you want to know more in detail about sample management I have a few free digitakt videos like this one on my channel (one showing a third party project manager and one with a couple of sampling tips).
Hope this helps. I'm certain you will feel more at home with DT after the course. And if you still have a few questions about the project structure etc. After that, feel free to contact me. I do think I will cover this more deeply in part 4 which will be aimed at arrangement and live performance.
If you buy all three parts as a pack the discount is already in there :). Or, currently you can also buy part 1 to get a discount on part 2. This will end when I have released all parts of the course. But will be permanent for people that buy into the course now.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I actually ended up getting the 1st course before you even answered; I figured to take a leap of faith and I'm glad I did. It's a great course.
I'm pretty sure I will get all the remaining ones after I'm done with the first one. Once you release the 4th course (which I'm particularly interested in) it would be nice to have a deal for courses 2-3-4 for those who bought course 1.
If I may extend a suggestion: I bought course 1 to test it out, because I wasn't familiar with your work, so I didn't want to risk buying the full pack. Now that I'm deep into course 1 and see that it is in fact an amazing course, worth every penny, I kinda wish I would have bought the full package and saved on it. So for ppl who want to test your course by getting the 1st one only, it would be nice to have a deal for 2-3-4.
And if anyone reads this comment wondering if you should get the full package, I fully recommend YES go for it.

The Digitakt shows the message "Sample Memory Full" although only 73 sounds out of 127 are used.
How can I load more sounds?
There's a maximum of 127 sample slots but also a maximum of 64 MB RAM per project. You probs have loaded a lot of long samples into your project. Have to keep both in mind :)

Do yo u like the Analog Rytm mk2? And do you mean DT and AR is a good combination?
Personally prefer the Digitakt as it is so compact. Rytm.is cool as well but I would only go for it if you really have a desire for analog drum synthesis. Otherwise simply drop analog drum samples in Digitakt.
For the money I would rather go for Digitakt plus analog 4.

With analog 4 you can create wonderful analog drums as well. And then sample.those into Digitakt ;)

If you shifted the tracks left or right globally wouldn’t it just skip forward or backwards and stay exactly the same?
It's on a per track basis not global :)
Since you are fighting for more available tracks why do you not use one DT just for drums so you have full 8 tracks on the other DT to do synths pads fills what have you? What do you not like about that if you have tried it?
Hi, I don't see it as fighting for more tracks really. Working with just 8 tracks also has the upside that you automatically start working in a minimalistic way which improves overall sound.
I have tried it though. I tried a pretty complex routing where 2xdt and 2xdn worked as one big instrument basically. But in the end came to the conclusion it didn't have a positive outcome on the speed of my workflow. It also cuts the tracks I have available in one project so to speak in half.
Since i pair Digitone with each digitakt nowadays I have plenty of tracks and sounds to work with. Often times not even using all 8 tracks on the DT.

This got me thinking. It is unfortunate that you can't use CTRL-ALL on a single track, but I wonder if it is possible to mess up the pattern with CTRL-ALL, then duplicate the pattern, go back to the original pattern and FUNC-NO to return to save state, then go back to second pattern and copy and one of the tracks you messed up, and copy that back to the original pattern. Obviously not great for playing live, but maybe a workaround in studio for using CTRL-ALL on a single track, or a couple tracks, if you aren't happy with how it is affecting all the tracks.
if I understand correctly, this is somewhat possible... not many people know of this function, but you can copy a pattern and paste it into another location without stopping the machine.
to do this: copy a pattern normally, then press and HOLD PTN+ (new pattern location) + PASTE... you have to hold these, and a graphic will appear on screen, kinda like a countdown until it gets pasted. once it's copied, you'll still be in the first location, but you can reload, and your variation will be saved in the second location. hope it's clear enough!
Control all on a single track is just tweaking a parameter on a single track though ;)
Thing copy thing is something I do a lot. Not live but when working on grooves. I'll also completely destroy grooves with control all looking for new ideas and copy those to a new pattern then return to the original and revert back to saved state. Make sure you save a copy of a project every now and then in case you mess up ;)
Dave Mech I mispoke. What I meant to say was revert single tracks back to original state after using CTRL-ALL to mess everything up, cuz sometimes maybe you want to revert only the kick drum and snare but keep everything else in its messed up state.
These machines are just ripe for experimenting and daydreaming new ways to try new tricks.
I don't feel as though I understand the fill function very well...
When pressing Fill all steps containing trigs with the condition FILL will play and all trigs with a underlined fill condition will not play. So that way you can create variations with the press of a button.

What is it with people pronouncing “Digitakt” and “Digitone” with a hard G? It’s clearly a shortened version of the word Digital.
Yes, however, it's a Swedish machine and they say Digi with a semi hard G and thus it's pronounced that way.
(hard G would be the Dutch gggg btw ;))

It is kind of possible but it’s not very smooth. And every l signal gets summed to mono of course :). Just have to set a trig on step one on a track with sample slot 0 (no sample). Record a sample at a fixed length, and then press yes a few times, then when it asks if you want to assign the sample to a track, choose the track with that one trig. Done. But yeah it’s a bit quirky ;)
