  • How to fix a Porsche Boxster 986 or Porsche Cayman 987 that won't shift gears or how to fix Porsche transmission that can't change gears.
Porsche Boxster 986 & Cayman transmission won't shift or change gears. If you're having trouble getting your Porsche Boxster 986 into Reverse, this video can help you. On the Boxster, there are two shift cables that attach to the side of the transmission in metal brackets. These cables can sometimes come out of their brackets and cause you to not be able to find or engage reverse in your 986.
The Porsche Boxster 986 and Porsche Cayman 987 both share how the gear shift works, it's a set of cables that attach to the transmission and those can pop off making you unable to shift the gears in your car.

    Great advice! Thanks
Ok, two hours later and your suggestion about the shift cable coming off the bracket on the transmission housing was my problem. No shift alignment tool, no removing the center console, no new shift cable needed!
Not only did you save me some money, you saved me a lot of time.
    Thanks so much!

It would have been really nice if you would have talked about what the bushings would look like if they were bad and then provided a photo of the corrected cable.

Ok I just got a 2006 Boxster S and getting in R takes a bit. I know where it is but I have to keep moving shifter to engage it. Is there a trick like push down or pull up shifter?
    Thanks

You could have popped out the cable from the bracket under the car... get under there and take a look. Could be an easy fix.

I thought it was because Porsche put their reverse gears next to 1st and 2nd gear, when it's supposed to be next to the higher gears!

hahahaha the RACING H! Explains why Porsche has more race victories than most! Thanks for watching James!

I prefer R next to 1st rather 5th. It makes more sense than seeing people hit R up shifting on track.

@@334trax2 I mean, most people who drive these cars do so on public roads. So to me, it makes more sense to have it away from the lower gears, as people tend to downshift more driving in the city.

@@334trax2 And plus, more focus is needed slowing down in a stick than speeding up.

@@jaythrash8804 I seen a video recently of a guy with a Camaro ZL1 1LE up shifting to 5th hit R. Thankfully he noticed before releasing the clutch. I was like OMG that could be expensive. I see what you are saying as well.
