    That is a lovely craft. A few years ago, my first ride in a small craft was a nearly identical vtail. I got to take control for about a half hour and fell in love with flight. I'm now second in command of a growing Part 107 program, and am trying to figure out how to get into manned flight. Videos like this definitely stoke the fire.

    Several ADs issued for the early Bonanzas made them less likely to break apart in flight. Also, pilots became more careful about flying in heavy turbulence and keeping the wings level in IMC. I think the v-tail has a reasonable safety record now, although it's not very forgiving of pilot errors. No doubt it's fun to fly.

    • @MrDucatizombie
      @MrDucatizombie  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fact. The airplane itself is quite easy to fly, especially in regard to coordinated flight. It is very fast and complex so that's where the lack of forgiveness comes from. Thanks for watching.

    Very nice aircraft. I was lucky enough that my dad had a E35 that I got to fly a little. Still remember 100, 90 and 80 mph across the fence (airspeed indicator did not have knots). The bonanza was always crazy to try and slow it down in the pattern to drop the gear. Through all my flight training never had a plane that was so airstream slick. Not like a Cessna 172 RG. Drop the gear and you thought something was wrong as it wanted to fall out of the sky.

We haven't bothered with a low pass in our plane because we might look like 5 o'clock Charlie going along the runway. We would need a really good tailwind. LOL! Otherwise, its a really good video. Many V tail Bonanza fatalities are due to loss of control of the airplane. The Bonanza's delightful handling is a result of less lateral stability than, say a Cessna 210, which is much heavier on the controls and also much more roll-stable. The reduced stability means that unattended in even slight turbulence the airplane will slowly drop a wing, and if in instrument conditions the pilot may not notice it due to managing other cockpit tasks as the airplane begins a descending 1g spiral. As the spiral continues, airspeed builds rapidly and when the pilot notices the situation, often he pulls back smartly on the yoke to arrest the descent, causing the V-tail to fail and sealing the airplane's fate. Straight tail Bonanza tail surfaces were designed to minimize that failure mode, but retain the same handling qualities that can still get a task saturated pilot in trouble, but with better margins for recovery.

    Beautiful vid Dale!! Any idea if all early models came with a separate yolk/steering column for the co-pilot/passenger?? My favorite all-time guitarist and mentor Randy Rhoads was killed in a 1955 F-35 back in March 1982. The pilot was goofing off, buzzing the band's tour bus, when on the 3rd pass while in a left bank, the left wing clipped the tour bus and sent the Bonanza cartwheeling and exploding into the garage of the nearby mansion. It was rumored that the elderly lady sitting in the passenger seat went into cardiac-arrest (she had a history of heart problems) leaned forward, and slumped onto the back-up controls which caused the plane to veer out of control. Very foolish move on the pilot's behalf, as he was warned before the fatal flight that Rachel had a heart condition, and Randy Rhoads was a very nervous flyer to begin with.

    • @MrDucatizombie
      @MrDucatizombie  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeff, thanks for the kind words. The dual yoke option was pretty expensive as I am told so you don't see too many out there. Reading the log books for this airplane are like a museum tour. It's really interesting. I never found records of that being changed so I think the guy who ordered it new ordered the dual yoke option at that time.
      Rhodes was legend for sure, he's been copied ever since. It's a shame so many talented musicians end up being killed in airplanes. I wish I could play 1/10th as well as he could.
      Dale

      @jeffhodge2276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrDucatizombie Thanx so much for your interesting response! Yes, it seems some models have a dual yoke, and others have a swinging/flipping yoke. An autopsy was never performed on Rachel Youngblood, so the theory of her suffering a cardiac arrest and slumping over the co-pilot controls is just a myth. The keyboardist Don Airey was standing on the ground beside the bus taking photo's at the time of the accident, and claims he witnessed some sort of a struggle going on inside the cockpit. I find this hard to believe, as they say the Bonanza was travelling at speeds of 140-180 knots, flying erratically in a downward descent at a 45 degree angle......kind of like trying to see inside a Nascar as it whizzes by you at 180 mph lol. For years i've been playing around with Microsoft Flight Sim Professional Edition, and downloaded a Beech Bonanza. Eerily enough, the small landing-strip where Randy perished is on this edition......Flying Baron Estates in Leesburg Fl. Yes, Randy was quite the pioneer in incorporating and blending classical with rock guitar and is sorely missed by fans around the world. Thanx very much again Dale.....stay safe, and happy flying :)

    Nice airplane, but please stop the "any traffic out there" call. The people who give us out tickets don't approve of that verbiage, as well as frown upon it.

    • @MrDucatizombie
      @MrDucatizombie  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I know that the protocol is not to make that call but I can think of at least a dozen times where it might have saved people and aircraft. One instance when an airplane I was a partner in was in a midair 50 feet over the threshold. The FAA's stance on this issue is predicated on a reliance that people will announce their positions and their intentions when entering airspace with no tower. The guy who landed his RV on top of the club's DA40 didn't make call one.....So I will continue to prod people into announcing their positions at airports where I know there is heavy traffic and communication breakdowns are an issue. I plan to be one of those "Old Pilots" not one of those "Bold Pilots".
