    Very concise review of these pedals. Most of the reviews I've seen were just using the phone mic picking up the whole room, not running direct to the audio track so you could hear what the pedal is doing. Even the official videos didn't cover them in great detail. Well done!
    I picked up a Mic Mechanic, Duplicator, and Harmony Singer 2 a couple of years ago. I liked the HS2 so much I bought 2 more!
    One thing you can do with them is run your mic into a mic splitter (I use a Whirlwind Split 6 parallel 6-way splitter) and then run into multiple Harmony Singer pedals at once, and each pedal into its own mic channel, for truly massive harmony effects.
    While the HS2 is designed to use a guitar or keyboard (or anything that normally plays chords as opposed to single lines) to guide the harmony, the chord used will influence the harmony. So, if you play a Major chord, then change to a Minor chord, the harmony will be Minor as well.
    The harmonies are 3rd and 5th above, and 4th and 6th below. The settings that use 2 harmonies are restricted to 3rdup+4th down, 5th up+6th down, 4th+6th down, and 3rd+5th up. A single pedal can't give you mixed harmonies of 3rd up+6th down, or 5th up+4th down, or 3rd+5th up + 4th+6th down. However, using multiple pedals and the mic signal split parallel to each one, and each pedal having a different setting, you can achieve truly massive harmonies. Just using 2 pedals will give you both up + both down, or 2 up + one down, or 2 down + one up.
    This is good enough to do Queen covers - Fat Bottomed Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody, Somebody To Love, etc.
    Finally, if you run two HS2s set to two harmonies each, then merge them into a 3rd and 4th pedal of any type (just to get them passing through the mic paths), then you can run the last one in the chain into a Duplicator set to Octaves for absolutely colossal harmonies. We're talking Mormon Tabernacle Choir: 3rd+5th an octave up AND an octave down + 4th+6th an octave up AND an octave down. It sounds amazing. Running them into each other can create bizarre harmony effects (3rd above harmonized a 4th down, etc.).
    The band I was in last year had an original where I activated one HS2 (set for 3rd above) for the first chorus, then a 2nd one (set to 4th below) for the 2nd chorus, and at the end I had all 3 pedals plus the Duplicator doing octaves on just one pedal (set to 5th up+6th down) and the effect was stunning. The layers got thicker each time, and the chorus had such impact!
    I did try to split the vocal signal into the instrument input, to see if you can use your voice as the guide for the harmony, but I'm not a great singer, so while it works, it's not ideal. The smallest fluctuations in pitch are magnified. Maybe if I could convince a good singer to do it, it'd sound better.
    I think the Critical Mass could do actual crowd singing, like Another Brick In The Wall's "We Don't Need No Education" boy's choir bit or "Centerfold" by J. Geils if it had some help from another octave pedal like the Duplicator, or even another Critical Mass.

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nhormar You can run into either one first, but I’d run into the HS2 first, then the XLR output into the MM mic input. In this configuration, use the Reverb and Tone Switch of the Mic Mechanic only, otherwise it may cause problems with the MM’s tracking. If you do put the MM first, the delay of the MM will definitely cause problems for the HS2.

    Great review.

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't used the Critical Mass, but I have the Duplicator. It appears to me the Critical Mass was divided into the Duplicator and Harmony Singer. The Duplicator has only Octave (one up, one down, all the time, with only the effect level adjustable, not the interval), and then what is essentially a very slow chorus for the Tight and Loose settings to simulate the inherent flaws with human doubling. It's detuned/shifted just enough to give a noticeable pitch difference, like half a semitone, and then slightly delayed to give thickness.

    does the pitch correction on here access # and flats?

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว

      It appears to be chromatic, but it can have some trouble tracking the intended note. I believe the Mic Mechanic came out before the Harmony Singer 2, as it doesn't have an instrument input to help guide the correction, so it's likely guessing at what note you're aiming for. If you're a few cents closer to the flat or sharp but you meant to hit the other or natural, the correction will pull towards the closest interval.

    Can I connect a keyboard instead of the guitar to the Harmony machine, would that work ?

    • @cpfwriter
      @cpfwriter ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's supposed to! Have never done it myself, but keyboard chords are probably more accurate than many guitarist chords, since you don't have to worry about string-bending or any notes in the chord being out of tune. Sweetwater reviews have some keyboardists giving a thumb's-up.

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว

      You can connect guitar or keyboard to it, but it works best with chords than individual/single notes. It's not recommended to use with a bass supplying the instrument input, probably because that's typically single notes more than chords, but that all depends on the music you play.

    Can the tc helicon blue pedal be used with distortion on an electric guitar?

      @TheGuitalian  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should place it before the distortion

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว

      It cannot be used as a guitar harmonizer, if that's what you mean. I've tried it. Miked cabinet into the mic input, guitar running into the instrument input, then into the amp. The tracking goes absolutely nuts. Great psycho sounds, but cannot act as a guitar harmony unit. As for where to place it in the chain, it should be as close to the guitar as possible; before any other effects including wah, pitch, or distortion.

      It is possible, but the more complex effect (Harmony) should run into the simpler effect (Mic Mechanic) for best results and to help with the pedal's tracking. Whichever one is last should use the tone switch, as it can cause artifacts if it's at the start of the chain.

    • @russelldawkins9094

      I would have thought the mic mechanic should go first then the harmony then the black one (if at all).

    • @mattnewcomb_official
      @mattnewcomb_official ปีที่แล้ว

      @@russelldawkins9094 You can run them in any order, to be honest, but you'll get better results if the Mic Mechanic is last. If you're using the MM for Delay, you don't want it going into the HS2, which is reliant on the guitar input for guidance. I suppose you could, if the delay time and repeats were set long enough, change to a minor chord while the vocal input has stopped but the repeats are repeating into the HS2, which would shift them to a minor key, but that's an outside chance IMO. Give it a try. You may have a hit song from it.
      Personally, I'd put the MM last, for the delay.
      Though I haven't used it myself, the Critical Mass seems to have the same effect as the Duplicator with a ton of preset reverb to make it sound like a crowd in a room. Because of that reverb, and the duplicated vocals which are shifted slightly as well, you wouldn't want that running into the Harmony Singer 2, because it will be difficult for the harmony algorithm to track. I might pick one of those up and run some tests on it with my other pedals, see if I can find a way to get Another Brick In The Wall or We Will Rock You out of it.

      You can run them into each other (mic outs to mic ins), just be aware that the more drastic effect should go first. In my experience, the Harmony Singer running into a Duplicator (not shown in this video) works best, as it has an octave setting which really expands the harmonies.

      @@Jack-fs2im it’s a risk, and sometimes you will get a troll of an engineer that will sabotage you. But I remember the time an artist told me (a sound guy) those same words, and it totally changed the way I do sound for everyone now. It’s not about me and my opinions of sound. It’s about making the artist be heard in the way they see fit:)

    An excellent review, practice is the most important thing, now I understand how they differ in reality. It's better to buy a vocal processor and it's easier and cheaper. Mass sounds like a toilet bowl, a horrible soapy creature. The harmonizer blue sounds great, but is useless without an instrument, and a mechanic is not needed at all. There will be no time to tap the tempo, and even on delays, we need presets that will switch.

      Spend more money and buy other offerings from TC Helicon. Don’t put don’t these pedals. Who the hell doesn’t have time to tap a delay during the intro of a song? Or during a count in? Doesn’t matter. By their Voice Play Live or something else and stop complaining.

    Terribly sad. The language barrier is terrible.
    These pedals do have great uses. But this video does not do it justice.
    Horrible.
