PUT TO THE TEST! - Project Goldie Engine Install Trilogy Pt. 2

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 4 ต.ค. 2024
- I built a 700 HP-capable LS7 starting with a Katech short block and it's finally time to see if I'm ready for the biggest test yet of my (limited) mechanical ability.
I really like these shop towels and you can help support the channel by picking up a roll: amzn.to/4dT55En
I hope you allow Bobby to have a rip in the car for all his hard work!
💯💯💯
I love how you lied when she said “how much was that $50 bucks” lol those jacks are anything but $50 bucks 😂
The tastefully capturing Bobby’s death line was epic
I try not to pat myself on the back too hard as a general rule but I made myself laugh when I came up with that one. Glad somebody else enjoyed it 😂
I’m so glad my death would have gotten you that 1 million views video 😂
@@JoshVanVeldman Im sure a lot of people like your personality and thank you for making these vids loveeeee YOUUUU
Impressive your buddy is a true friend not to many people would do this, I wish I had a friend like that.
100% agree.
When you mentioned that it wasnt impossible for you to do it by yourself, but with Bobby it was much better.
I felt that. Even just having the company of a friend while you're wrenching makes the unpleasant moments much better.
In a saturated market you are doing something unique in automotive TH-cam. I’m in the Atlanta area also, and my bmw had been on jack stands for about 6 months until recently. I’m about 80 miles into the break in, and falling back in love with the car. You’ll be there soon, and we should meet up for a drive
Niiice! Thanks man, it takes a ton of work to get to the point in terms of filming and editing where you can start to dial in a recipe that feels like your own. Hit me up on FB or Instagram or my email address in the channel info.
"its uncomfortable being in a transition phase. arriving? i already feel better." this hit a lot for me, honestly. i love that your videos are full of little moments like that.
Sometimes when I'm editing I talk myself into cutting stuff like that but I try to leave it in just in case it connects with somebody! Life is full of liminal spaces (physical or temporal) and they can be very unsettling to go through. I think everybody deals with it in one form or another.
@@JoshVanVeld well, i'm glad you keep in a few still! that one with one of your daughters tightening the bolts also really stuck with me, as my own dad is a mechanic and has inspired me to push towards that as a career path, and if nothing else a hobby. i've dealt with it, and live in a constant transitional state in multiple forms, but i always find myself looking back on the fear i had before taking the first steps towards /anything/ as being so much worse than when i actually found the footing, means and motivation to go through with it.
Sweet shout out to Mike over at Stanceworks.
First time, always watch someone or a video. Can save you tons of headaches.
Yes - shaved head is the way. So excited you released another video. This is THE series for hobbyist mechanics or plain ol wannabees like me.
The shaved head was also when Walter White broke bad. Don’t be cooking anything in that garage but tires brother. Haha joking obviously, but top notch work on the build. I can promise you a shop would not have put half the care into that engine swap that you did. It will last many years at redline now. Oh and the how to videos for anything plastic are not a crutch, let someone else destroy their interior pieces so you don’t have to, or at least try not to.
I’m gonna be both happy and sad when this project is done.
Enjoying the videos.
Thanks!
Thank you! There will be other projects, but there's only one Goldie.
This channel is a hidden gem 🙏
Started wirh the video from 2 weeks ago, and here we are with a fresh continuation of this epic tale!
that’s a good friend
Understatement!
Babe wake up Josh dropped a video!!
i'm glad you didnt kill bobby on camera however think of how easy it would have made it for the investigators, its captured in 4k
😬 The thought crossed my mind 🤣
This comment had me cracking up 😂
Great to see the progress on Goldie! Can’t wait to hear her fire up and tear up AMP!
A 3ft 1/2” to 3/8” extension will often reach those hard to reach bolts on the back of an engine. I’m not sure about your application but it is an excuse to but a cool tool.
I’ve heard the spoiler for next episode 😢 keep up the tenacity and dedication. If it was easy and problem free, everyone would do it!
The way I see it, even in the wild parents are teaching youngsters how and what to hunt. Some things come naturally, to some more than others… but there is a reason why there are repair manuals. Sometimes you can’t just go in there blindly.
I already know I’m going to like this and I haven’t watched the whole thing yet.
Haha thanks!!
What an awesome cut🤣 "I need a rubber"
Bobby is a national treasure. 😂
Without a rubber 9 months later you will owe half your treasure 😂
I just binged 5 of your videos and now I have to wait until the next one drops 😂 great content. New sub.
That's awesome! Thanks brother!
Tastefully? That cracked me up
Fantastic Josh & Bobby! Been silently following along. Josh, I’ve been a big supporter of you getting Goldie back on the road and I can’t wait for you to experience that moment. Well done sir. Well done. Next, fire her up!
What?? Posted this video at the end of my lunch break? Now I have to wait half the day to see it!! 😭
So... did you get off work yet?
Yes! I just finished watching it. That magical “clomp” when the engine and transmission - or bellhousing in this case - slide together. 👍
Stay at it my friend. I started my 5th gen Camaro today after 8 months of me rebuilding the engine at home to the pistons and crank. She ran and yes it was more of a relief than joy but I enjoyed the process of building it. Took it on a test drive she sounds crazy no cats x pipe loud
Keep up the great work on the car and the storytelling, it's fantastic. Also, you'll know when you graduate from beginner to intermediate mechanic, you'll know what to do instead of being lost or not having a clue, it takes time, especially since you're not a pro technician that does it day in and day out. I've been doing DIY mechanic work for 19 years, and honestly, a pro technician that's been in a shop for only 3 or 4 years has more experience than I do, especially if they're in an independent shop.
Also, when I did my clutch in my E36 328i, I used 4 or 5 one foot long extensions to reach the top 2 or 3 bolts on the bellhousing.
I hope someone that watches this that has a C6 drops and installs the engine from the bottom with the torque tube attached, I imagine that it took at least 2 hours of struggling and adjusting everything.
Great point about the pros. They’re in another league!
another banger of a video!! I seriously love how you narrate your thoughts, jokes, problems, and solutions. Keep on working! You are soooooo close to the finish line!
Really glad you like the approach. They're fun to make 😁
DUDE, you're in the gaming industry and we don't have ANYTHING better than ACC and iRacing COMBINED using Unreal 5!!!!! Great videos by the way.
As someone who just had to fight motor mounts on their 04 CTSV to get headers in, I'm envious of your creative steel elimivibes.
Watching a How-to guide completely before the job helps to avoid the 1-2 complications that can cause a massive headache. After memorizing those 1-2 things, take a crack at it and see how it goes. No shame returning to the video for a quick guide on something later on.
I think this is the correct take. Thanks!
Keep On,Keeping On...👍
Finally made it on time to watch my fav show.
Can’t wait to hear it start up.
It took you less time to install the engine than my watching the entire video! Small chunks!
Glad to see you making progress!
I honestly appreciate you taking the time and effort to upload these videos as they are very cathartic to a guy like me. My friends are all military and veterans so we are all over the damn place and I miss these times with them.
Happy to hear it man. I can imagine how tough that is.
@JoshVanVeld eh just the lifestyle the military usually leads too. I'm two months in a new state so hopefully after I get my vette running correctly again I will be able to meet some people and come out of my air conditioned cave haha. Keep up the vids please, they are awesome 👌
Also as a recently shaved head guy myself, you pull it off well. 🤙
Dude!!!! You are killing it. You and Dr. Bobby are a serious team. Way to go.
I’m pro how-to videos. You still need to do the work, but at least they help you so you don’t feel like you are fumbling around in the complete darkness.
Thanks brother!
Appreciate sharing your build. And the courage to do my inevitable...shaving my balding head.
I think I've maybe worn a hat once since I buzzed my hair, compared to EVERY DAY FOR YEARS. Sure I would feel a little better if I had a full head of hair, but now I'm used to the buzzed look and feel free. I highly recommend it.
Ive though the same thing about using how to guides for everything. I figure depnding on what youre doing you don't lose anything by watching the how to video, but bigger projects on something you want to learn its probably best to take the time and make mistakes while learning.
Like a Glove - congrats on the milestone....
Did you do torque tube maintenance? Might want to go ahead and install some heat shield down the torque tube area and around underbody at headers while you're in there. do everything you need to while there! Been really enjoying the series btw!
I decided to skip torque tube maintenance until it's needed. I didn't realize how close we'd be getting to removing the torque tube as part of the engine install or I might have rethought that plan. Thanks!
Congrats!
Also, hat-tip to Bobby who has clearly earned himselfs Beers for Life at your house, hahaha.
I am 99% sure Bobby had no idea what he was signing himself up for 😂 I"m looking forward to him getting a new project going so I can show up and slow him down.
This is my favorite video yet!!! I absolutely love the banter back and forth. It makes it feel like I’m in the garage with you guys and that’s what I love the most. It allows you to get immersed in the video completely.
I was telling Nicole this morning that this one is right up your alley.
@@JoshVanVeld I really do love it! This to me is the best type of story telling as it feels the most genuine. I’m not a big fan of YT videos feeling over edited or like an actual production as that is what YV shows & movies are for. I watch YT to see real stories and exposure to more than what is directly around me. Also to your question about how to videos, I think they are great. By watching many how to videos over the years it has made me more knowledgeable overall, but each vehicle will be slightly unique and this is where the videos can save you time, headaches & money.
I stumbled across this vid looking for a super charger for my Z06, watched 3 and looking forward to the next one.
I just found this channel and love it even though I'm a Ford guy. I like your tone and demeanor, etc. Cool channel, my brother. Rock on, brother
🤔🚫🧢💯💪🏻❤️🎬🤘🦈🥶😈🚚💨🚚💨
MGW shifter with antivenom mod is life. Also, loc-tite the shift knob screw or you'll hear the washer rattling in a month.
Thanks for the tip. I need to go back in there to replace the rubber gasket at some point.
@@JoshVanVeld NP. Don't go too thick on the detent plug or you'll find yourself shifting too fast for the transmission.
Can’t wait to see the next video, I know it’s got to be close now!
Shooting for tomorrow!
yessir you are now a part of the true drivers club with this rite of passage. Congrats on the shave also brother lol
Awesome . I'm definitely a tier below a novice mechanic , lol. My older brother, who always loved cars, and was always with my dad working on cars when we were young, grew up to open a big , reputable shop, here in Eastern NC, while I stayed on my bike hanging with my friends, building forts, playing sports, or video games. Now, since he has passed due to covid at the young age of 50, I have become really interested in cars. Well, I've always been interested, just didn't have the drive, or desire. I've started slowly doing things to my cars with help, and learning. Me and my mechanics friend walnut blasted the carbon out of my Genesis coupe 3.8 bk2 at 100k, we replaced the injectors, plugs, coil packs also. Sorry for the long post, but just saying watching your videos is inspiring, and shows your humble.
Man I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. Way too young!
I feel like we're never too old to pick up a new skill. I'll never be a master mechanic, but I'm learning and I'm having fun.
I’ve been watching your series as I work up the nerve to install my own h/c/i package on my z. Thanks for the content so far, I feel more confident than ever that it’s doable
Absolutely doable!
Such a joy this channel. Thanks for sharing this journey with us Josh. Hair looks good. Listen, even if it didn't, who really cares? We are married men with wonderful kids and wives better than we deserve. They would never hold something out of our control against us! Now the funyuns bag boxer shorts I recently purchased off amazon did test my marriage.
LOL! Thanks brother! I read this out loud to @Doctor_Bobby over the phone and we got a good chuckle.
16:42 YESSS Bible references haha!
I was able to get my bell housing off by dropping the x pipe and the plate with a ton of fasteners above it. The diff clocked enough dropping the bell to give me room to get the upper bolts. Doesn't help out now but for future reference lol
🤦🤣
Swivel head sockets are key.
Loving this series, being from Australia, i got to drive a 2014 Z06 in vegas a while back and fell in love. Running a decently worked ls1 in my holden commodore here in aus with a t56
Keen as to see this 427 sing again.
It is really enjoyable watching the sharing of the story as I am another vette owner of c5, always lazy to get into working on the cars until something really need to be done before the next track day.
Nothing like a deadline for motivation 😁
I always love following your narrations and journey... I mentioned in a previous episode that I have a C6 as well with Apex wheels too... So I feel like I'm watching myself go through the same journey with you. Keep up the posts!
Absolutely love this! Ironically my LS7 is starting to consume oil so ive made the decision for no more tracking and moving into pricing out something similar to your setup or going with a rebuild. Still scared to take that rite of passage you took with yours lol.
Thanks! I only recommend it if you're a glutton for punishment and/or have access to a 2-post lift.
@@JoshVanVeld yeah, my brother in law owned a shop where he’d lend me a lift. Definitely factoring punishment and time vs a shop managing the build.
Great work! FYI - mount the bellhousing to the engine and you don't have to drop the torque tube and rear cradle. You can access all of the torque tube to bellhousing bolts to mate them and install.
Had to subscribe in hopes to support this endeavor. I moved across the US in 2012 and away from one of my best friends. Every Tuesday we would work on our Volvos together and it's something I sorely miss. There will be stumbles in a project of this magnitude, but don't worry, you are doing great and will figure it out.
Volvo Tuesday. Taco Tuesday. Volvo taco Tuesday?
I feel really blessed to have Bobby's help and I'm sure it will be fun to look back at the videos down the road when these days have turned into the good old days. Thanks for the support!
“Why did you wear a white shirt?” I literally had the same thought 10 seconds before I heard it haha. I should hit the lotto
I believe this makes me entitled to 10% of the winnings. Good luck! 😊
i need part 3 im so invested haha
Working on it... hoping to have it out tomorrow morning.
I’m 72 and I started wrenching on cars at 15. Long before TH-cam and the internet. It’s at better now, less broken parts due to the hidden fasteners and clips and such. I changed out the clutch on my C5 ZO6, using a Monster dual disk clutch, around 2017. Reading up and watching videos helped a lot. I did it by myself, pulled the trans, rear suspension and torque tube and did a lot of cleanup due to the previous owners oil down. I did have a lift, which was great, but still 100% solo. Mine was also yellow and a mostly track car but still fully street legal.
Much respect for doing it solo! I think the C5Z's look great in yellow. I had a silver one.
Congrats on making this milestone and getting your new engine into the car!
As far as the question you posited towards the beginning of the video about using guides and such like youtube and at what level is following instructions vs "real" mechanic work I think having those guides to understand the quirks of each job you may be going into is helpful and not necessarily a crutch I think the real skill in mechanics starts coming along when you get into better understanding how to diagnose issues on your own and having the confidence to go at large projects like these and there's never harm in asking for help even the pros get stumped and need help sometimes
That makes a lot of sense to me! Thanks 🤝
These videos are giving me anxiety of pulling out the motor and drive train in my c6 but also info on how to
Haha I think if I had prepared more in advance we could have saved a lot of time.
Another great one! Good luck on the next one with the start!
Thanks dude! Soon!
Excited for the next video
Soon! (Hopefully tomorrow)
I love this! Cant wait for the next one! Keep up the good work guys
Awesome job man. Keep on trucking. Because of you I did my heads and I'm back to running even better than before. Also scissor lift for the win. Beat investment I've made in years and I can park on it.
Thank you! I would never willingly do this job again without access to a real lift.
Absolutely loving this series! Legit get stoked everytime I see a new video pop up.
I love to hear that. Thanks!
I love watching you because I'm just like you!
😁😁
Buzzed head is strong. I’m much younger than you and just did the same. Embrace the buzz, it’s liberating.
Buzz cut brothers unite!
Josh I have to say im in love with your content and progress and reminds me of when I built my Gto from a built short block and which was my 1st ever motor build too and brought me back great memories. I understand the stress when you come across more issues and frustration when you put a deadline. The quality of your content gives me gran-turismo vibes and is one of my favorite channels Ive come across. I cant wait to see Goldies first start !
first time I always watch a video or get input from someone if available. Helps from breking stuff your first time and also you will know how to do it next time. Just got to be careful with getting the correct info online. when I saw those motor mounts hanging on the motor I knew you were going to have issues getting that motor in.
Yeah info online is hard to verify. Bobby's the kind of guy where if he thinks he can figure it out on his own he skips the internet altogether and I respect that.
This is such a great project. Thank you for documenting this for the rest of us to enjoy. I want to get to Road Atlanta at some point. You should plan a meet and greet for all the channel followers. Seeing the car live would be great.
With the front Jack stands so far back I feel like you were 3 cheeseburgers and a case of beer away from flipping that sucker!
You and me both brother. 😅
Great story telling with your videos. Looking forward to you posting the first track video of you and Goldie with the new engine.
Thanks man! We gotta walk before we can run.
With video learning, do it as much as you want. Once you say. Oh pssh I can do it now (from doing it over and over) that’s when I give it a go without the video.
Just did a new alternator in my 4x4 and am confident in not needing a video. My holes to jump through is limited tools I had to use spanners solely.
Eventually you just get faster and more efficient
I love when track guys become tire and brakes snobbs lol. If that is the first thing you look at on track days then you have graduated to a real life track guy.
It took me a good 15 seconds to get the "give me some wd40" joke lol. Im definitely stealing that because it can be used in many situations with many different things.
Haha I agree. Power is fun, but most people don't want to admit that they can't or don't know how to use it. I was so proud of coming up with the WD40 joke on the spot, I had to draw some attention to it with the edit. Glad you liked it.
I love this stuff!
Holy crap 227 comments in 4 days. Man this channel should have 100k subs! Josh are you going to do any aero, or more track oriented coilovers, slicks setup?
At the moment the plan is *maybe* coilovers. No aero, no slicks. I want a clean looking street car that can clean most GT3 clocks at the track. So much of the track part comes down to driver skill.
All that said, I imagine I will find myself wanting to go faster and faster, so I don’t want to say that any plans are set in stone.
Can't wait to see Goldie running again.
I love watching this series man. Everything has been so enjoyable to watch. You two are just like 2 best friends hanging out building race cars. The dream some would say! I can relate to you though as I'm currently pulling apart my 6th gen camaro due to a lifter failure. *sigh*
Ugh. Sorry to hear that!
It's been a great experience getting to know Bobby, it feels like we're old friends at this point because of how many hours we've spent wrenching together. Having a buddy makes it so much more fun and there are definitely tasks that are a lot easier with a second set of hands, even if all the goofing around wastes time.
Glad you're enjoying the videos!
Congratulations! Great Progress!
Just leaving a comment for the algorithm, your channel needs more reach, love it! 😂
Haha much appreciated!
Nice work. Looking forward to seeing back on the road. I bet it will sound insane also.
be very happy you replaced the slave cylinder. its a very common failure point on these cars. I would highly recommend you upgrading to a tick performance clutch master cylinder as well. I ordered a new slave cylinder with the billet release bearing from monster when I ordered the same clutch you have. pain in the butt but certainly worth it since you're tracking your car. these cars love to kill clutch masters and slave cylinders.
Pretty sure I also ticked the box for the billet release bearing and had it installed by Monster. I assume everything would have to come out again if I wanted to do the master cylinder?
@@JoshVanVeld nope! clutch master can be done with the car put together. I drove mine in the garage and swapped mine in about 2 hours. Makes a huge difference!
Love this. Glad I found your channel.
I'm doing a clutch in my c7z time attack car. And the while your in there list has grown! Now a cam, oil pump, lifters, headers, bigger upper pulley to lower boost and new tuning. I started to do it myself as I've d9ne everything else in my 10 years of racing gm cars and 10 years of mustang but I needed a shop for this job cause I need it done asap to make nasa f8nals schedule. I was going to do the monster sc triple but ended up going with mantic triple with with solid hub and cerametallic disk. I'll have 2 tunes and 2 pulleys. Make 645 on lower than stick boost for nasa and 720 to 750 on higher boost for global time and scca tt. Road to finals! Good chance at tt1 win this year. Stiff competition in tt1!! Good job on the car btw.
Sounds like an absolute BEAST! I've heard Mantic is about as good as it gets and the $$$$ matches. I've done endurance wheel to wheel but I bet I'd enjoy time trials. Hit me up if you're going to be at Road Atlanta or AMP I'd like to spectate!
I love how to videos. They really just speed up the whole process. Its much smarter to learn from others than to go through the hardship yourself just for the sake of it. We stand on the shoulders of giants and we all continuously add to the tree of knowledge at the branches. Even you.. by uploading these videos :)
I'm a fan of smarter for sure. Funny thing about TH-cam - editing the videos makes me rewatch things sometimes dozens of times - the lessons sink in a lot better as a result.
One of the reasons I love watching these videos is because it gives me a vastly different perspective. I never saw how to TH-cam videos as a crutch, but as a requirement so I don't spend forever figuring out where the last bolt is or how to release the odd plastic connector. I can't see myself giving them up, I never liked video games where defeating the boss required some non-intuitive trick (prefer when they make me learn a skill) either.
I also would have chosen the LS3, probably had it professionally swapped, and spent the rest of time bolting on parts to bring it up to LS7 horsepower (probably ending up with a supercharger) and been at the track.
But that isn't necessarily better. This is a different journey, and I commend you for developing yourself as mechanic rather than chasing highs at the track. I'm not sure I could do it.
One of the reasons I love making videos is getting comments like this! There are a million ways to be an automotive enthusiast and since there isn't any handbook I like exploring ideas and getting different perspectives. 🤝
I built a hybrid for a customer - Texas Speed LS7 short block with PRC LS3 heads. Long story how we came to that. Texas Speed said the LS3 heads would flow less air than LS7 heads but higher compression would equalize the power output. Never got to dyno that engine - part of the long story - but it had a TON of torque!
Great content and very entertaining editing style. love it, keep it up!
keep it up! your doing an excellent job. there are more advanced techniques into building a race engine, but this is still very neat to watch! bravo bravo
Ya queda menos ,muy buen trabajo, buen amigo ,lo mejor de todo es la pasion,a disfrutar cuando arranque y cuidarse, saludos
I've really enjoyed this journey. Glad I found this channel.
Great video enjoyed the content keep it up. 👍🏻
Thanks!! 🤝
I like the new do.
Airgap being on the lower end results in a high engagement on the clutch pedal. A lot of c6’s are this way. And as the clutch wears and the pressure plate fingers move further reward it only exacerbates this issue. There are remedies but dropping the drivetrain to fix it is harder than pulling the engine. A cheap solution is a clutch pedal stop but it’s really only a band-aid.
Got it. I'll pay attention to that. What's the actual fix if one were to go that route?
You want to be on the upper end of the recommended range. A Tilton slave can accomplish this if you’re not far far below. If you’re far below you’ll have to visit your local machinist and get material removed from the slave.
To help answer your question. After time and experience you should be able to make an educated guess, and then check yourself with the manual before you start tearing into it. That is the best way I learn things.
