    I had the key thing happen to me. They gave me their word that I had 72 hours to return the vehicle I bought. I took them up on it and decided it wasn’t worth the extra $. Came back with the car and had to threaten to bring my lawyer over etc after they said the deal was final. They finally decided to give me my car I traded in back the keys were mysteriously missing. After waiting for 2 hours for them to find them and them trying to sell the car I just returned during the process, I end up with the keys to both cars and take off with them and chuck the ones I didn’t need out the window on the way home. Oops

      Threatening with lawyers doesn't work like you think it does it will cost you money to even get them to write a letter.

      I know this because I've sued some contractors in the past for breach contract. They completely breached the contract in many areas but it still cost thousands out of my pocket for them to finally correct the issues

    Back in 1992, Wifey & I went to a dealership looking for a used four-door vehicle as we had a brand new baby, and wanted something easier for loading/unloading her babyseat. - Maybe a VW Jetta, or Honda Accord. Anyway, the whole time we were there the salesguy pushed very hard for us to test drive the "very exciting" Oldsmobile Achieva! Apparently the promo they were running would have put us into the Achieva at close to the same payment as the Jetta or Accord. We explained we were really not interested in the Oldsmobile, and it was late in the day, so we were tired, the baby was hungry, but the salesguy kept urging us to give the Achieva a chance. We'd been at the dealership for close to two-hours and I explained to the salesguy we were ready to leave, but we'd come back over the weekend to look again. So me & wifey are heading towards the door and the salesguy's manager comes out of his office and stands in front of the door, telling us, "I can't let you leave without considering the best deal you're going to get on the Achieva." I reiterated we were willing to come back, but it was getting late and we wanted to go home. The sales manager said, "You're not leaving until we work out the numbers, which will not be available ever again!" At that point I acquiesced and said, "OK, but let me make a phone call to let some people know I'm stuck here for awhile." (This was before most people had cell phones.) The sales manager pointed me to the front desk phone, and even pushed a button to enable me to make an outside call. I dialed 911 and told the dispatcher where I was and that my wife & child were being held hostage. The sales manager laughed because he thought I was playing a gag on him. When I started to give a physical description of the sales manager, as well as his name, and the name of the original salesguy to the dispatcher, the manager realized it was not a joke and grabbed the phone to insist he was not holding us hostage and then he frantically started pointing to the salesguy to open the door for us to get us out of the building. By the time my wife & I got the baby in her seat and were driving off the dealership lot, three police vehicles were racing down the service road heading toward the dealership building. I never went back to that dealership, ever.

      The fact that you tell the story as if you were not the wrong guy for calling the police because you couldnt say no to the salesman while cops could actually be saving lives instead of taking care of your bullshit, and still not realising how dumb you acted even after 30 years blows my mind

When it's late in the day, you're with your wife & you're carrying a baby, and you've got a salesguy & his sales manager blocking the exit after you've said "no" multiple times, please let me know how well you'd handle it. Until then, you are merely a keyboard warrior who knows nothing beyond what I shared with my personal experience. If the police had more important things to do that night, I expect they would have been doing them.

    I think we need to give credits to those (maybe very few) conscientious dealers. I traded in my old 07 car last year for a new car. KBB estimates the trade-in for dealership was 8K to 9K. The first dealership gave me a (humiliating) quote of 4K. A sales manager of the second dealership (same brand), said they can give me at most 7K, but he suggested me to sell it to a private party because the car can sell easily over 10K or maybe 12K or higher. He was right. I ended up selling it on Craigslist for 10K.

      I've had the same situation, where they were pretty honest about how you get hosed on the trade in, and that I'd be way better off selling it myself. They were honest about everything there, and didn't try to upsell me on anything. It was quite the unexpected experience, but it definitely made them stand out and able to sell more cars IMO, since everyone else in the city seemed to be the usual scumbag used car salesman typical type. I suppose they knew this, and it allowed them to have a better reputation with their business because of this...

    When I go buy a car I just ask to pay a specified amount cash for a car that they are offering. When they say no I just walk away and leave. Possibly come back to ask if they changed their mind. I can't negotiate and hate the whole process. So I simply opt not to do it. Even when they try to keep me in there I'm like "No is no, it's alright, see you later". I don't even want to think about financing a car. I would 100% walk out of there feeling like I was @#$-ed over.

      I made a low ball offer, and they laughed at me and wouldn't even negotiate. Then I went home got on my computer, and found Costco had a program where the price was even less. Also similar to what AAA had for wholesale price. I went back to the dealer about 2 hours later, and the salesman said "I knew you would be back" - yeah I said, but I'm not buying through you, I'm buying through the Costco program, and I showed him the paper and his jaw dropped. Problem, is I think the Costco program only works if the dealers have excess inventory they are trying to get rid of, and right now there is a shortage. You still may be able to buy from dealers whose models are not selling.

      @@uemackay1592 I test drove a truck and was asked to leave my key so they could “verify the condition” of my trade in, I already knew this “key trick.” I went straight home, which was 5 minutes away and got my spare. When I finally asked for my keys back, I was told they were in the garage, which was being worked on by Overhead Door, and it was going to take about half an hour. I said “it’s a good thing I brought my spare. Call me when I can get my keys.” They knew I wasn’t messing around and miraculously they remembered there was another way into the garage. Got my keys back and they lost a sale.

    We bought our last one this way. They still kept us in that stupid paper signing office for like 1.5 hours trying to sell us warranties. My husband finally looked the sales guy in the eyes and whispered...'We don't want the warranties.' I loved him so much in that moment

      The only one you wanna get is the Gap insurance in case your car is damaged or stolen. It covers your ass on the remaining balance and if your car had any value it’s then given to you in the form of a check. Usually about 1k to get and piece of mind if you live or travel to big cities. Got that on my Jeep that was crashed into and I ended up with a check and just bought a little beater Corolla from the early 2000s instead of a fancy Jeep

      Those warranties are a scam, they do not even have a phone to answer, I handled to get the money back to pay my loan, but it was the dealer who made the refund

      Are you trying to sell me a vehicle that you have no faith in? What do you know about this vehicle that I don't that makes you think I will need an extended warranty? Are you trying to sell me a shit vehicle?
      You tell me, Mr. Sales Manager. Would I be better off walking out of this deal, or would you be better off shutting up about how little faith you have in the vehicle you are trying to sell me?

    On financing, I tried to buy a car for cash and they didn't like it. They get kickbacks from the bank on the financing. Let them calculate their profit from the kick back, it will reduce your price. Then after the sale, pay off the loan, or you can refinance it with your credit union if you like.
    One advantage of a "trade-in" is you only pay sales tax on the NET price you pay. So if you buy a 30k car and get 10k on a trade in, you only pay sales tax 0n 20k. So in New York where they have an 8% sales tax, you save $800 (8% of the trade in value). So that's $800 more you would get then if you sold your old car independently in a separate transaction.

    My all time favorite was when I put $7500 down on a car, then the finance team calculated my interest BEFORE they processed the down payment. I essentially paid interest on my own down payment. If they had processed the down payment before the interest it would've been around $2-3k less throughout the life of the loan.

      How the F is that even possible?
      In EU, even if they would calculate monthly payments wrong, you actually sign the concract for starting value and the rate.
      Then if you take 7500 away from starting value at the same rate, the mothly payment goes down automatically!

      This isn't real. You pay interest in a car on what you owe. The dealerships have 0 to do with the apr. So it doesn't matter if it's at the beginning or end. Total financed amount is all that matters.

    I had salesman throw my keys on the roof of the dealer when I freaked after they jerked me around about getting my keys back. By the time they were able to scale the bldg and get my keys, it was couple hours, and that was the only time all the sales people avoided me like the plague

    That Mustang story was so incredibly messed up that Bill didn’t even let him finish it. I feel so bad I didn’t even want to know how it ended either. Car dealers are some of the most immoral and heartless people that you’ll find in any American industry.

He stopped paying rent in the winter & when I spoke to him he said he would be getting a Christmas bonus and would catch up. Of course that never happened. He made a couple of other promises before I just ended up having to get a lawyer and go through the eviction process. All told, he owed close to $10k in back rent and left the apartment trashed. He started using a cane, probably trying for sympathy, but I showed up at his work to serve him and he wasn't using it at work. Turns out, he did have less money during winter but it was still plenty to pay the $500/mo rent.

    He's 100% correct I was the finance manager at an auto dealership for 5 years you either want to pay cash or B finance at a credit union.. what you have to watch out also with dealership low percentages are fees because those fees add up and depending on the price of the car that could be more than the interest

    You go online and find the car you want. Test-drive it and make sure the dealership is open to a 3rd party inspection. If they refuse, then make sure they provide their most recent in-house inspection/safety reports. If you're buying used, then make sure it's a Certified Pre-Owned. Find out what's wrong with the car through the reports if you couldn't figure it out while driving.
    Make sure the dealer fixes every single issue found on the report before buying the car. If they say they can't resolve anything, then on to the next one. If they can only do partial repairs, then explore warranty options to see what can be covered.
    You'll be super-happy with the car if you put the dealer to work, 100%.

      @ Faraz Hasan First of all if you were going to buy a used vehicle you should only trust your own personal mechanic to do an inspection, Never trust the dealer to inspect their vehicles properly! Every dollar they spend on repairing a used vehicle is a dollar out of their pocket, I’m not saying there aren’t any trustworthy dealerships but I am saying there are a lot of untrustworthy dealerships!

      Yeah, had a 3rd party inspect a car. Listed the issues, i called the local dealer that sold/maintenance shop for that kind of car. Got a full cost to replace and time cost to get the car baxk up to road worthy and/or to newish condition. Got back to the dealer n see what they did to get it roadworthy, lul nothing burger. Replaced 1 tyre with a cheapo, now all 4 are different wear, the belt centre bearing was noisy, they said they didnt hear anything 🤣. Took a week to get my $500 "inspection" deposit back. Throwing all these insurance/warrenties at me n already saw it was worthless lol

    I don't know, last dealer I was at sold me a used car, and the only reason we bought it was they offered no down payment and no interest for the life of the loan. Best car purchase I've ever made. That was 8 years ago. 😎

    Friend asked me to accompany him to check out some used SUV's because I was an engineer for one of the big domestic 3. He wanted to take one for a test drive but you could hear metal grinding metal when he put the transmission to drive. Sales guy said that's normal and that was the signal to go somewhere. Remember reading story in Toronto of salesman who got a prison term for almost 20 yrs for all the seniors he ripped off.

    I have done all of this and 9 times out of 10 when the sales manager realizes you are prepared will simply say, "sorry, we can't sell the car for that" and walk away. The only exception is if the car you want to buy has been on the lot for over 20 days, in which case they will likely get you a doable hooker and some middling blow to get you to buy as they have to move the cars within 25 days otherwise they lose money.

    The way the vid begins, you know the advice is of high quality. If your credit is good, "you only want to deal with one variable with the dealership the price of the car." Sounds relatively simple, however the most crucial advice of the whole process. Very well said 👍🏽

    It's hard to get over on car sales men. I buy a new car maybe once every 10 to 12 years. They do this shit every day. It's thier job. They have all their scams worked out , before U even walk in the door.

      Weird lol I feel like half of these dealerships will be gone in 5-10 years. I went to one and It had that last days of Blockbuster vibe to it. They had barely any cars in stock and the employees were mentally checked out. It wasn't winter or anything it was the beginning of summer. Carvana seems cool enough, lots of available cars at least.

      Exactly. They had the lowest rate of anyone and my wife and I got both approved for the best rates at the time and saved us a lot of time at the dealership since all of the paperwork for finance was done ahead of time. I went in signed some documents and walked out with the car

    i bought my car last year, it was a tense negotiation but i got as good of a deal as i possibly could. trade in i was offered 1500. it was a pile of shit nissan, but i spent 15k on it 5 years before plus like 4k in repairs on it. wasnt going to take that hard of a hit. went to car max the next week, got offered 4500. i was honestly expecting maybe 3k, because its still a used car dealer they had to resell the thing. i was excited to get that much for it lol.

    Its easy. When you're at a dealer you have 3 seperate things you're negotiating. The car you're buying. The interest on the loan. And possibly you're trade in. The dealer wants to bundle all 3 things into 1 negotiation. Dont let them. Force them to negotiate each thing seperstely. Don't even talk about payment until you've settled all 3.

    I NEVER ever finance through a dealership anymore. I found out that they lie about your interest rate and I don’t even see how it’s legal. They’ll shop you around and come back and tell you your interest rate is 3.24 when they bank told them they’d do it for 1.99. They make money off of that and it’s the scummiest thing ever. I always walk in with a check in hand…fuck em!

      my brother got hit with that. he was told 4-6%, got in the office, all of a sudden it was almost 9%. he argued with them for a couple hours to get the difference out of the sales price. finance guy was not happy

    In 2017, I was 22 years old in college. Found a BRANE NEW Nissan Navara pick up for %35 less than price tag in dealer. Brand new. 0 km. My dad didn't buy it. My uncle was willing to help him. Salesman was insanely good. My dad was dumb to buy it. All these years later with dollar is 10 times stronger than my country's Currency Turkish Lira. The car we didn't buy for 70k is now 2.200k

    I used to help dealerships set up their finance systems. New York, Chicago, and New Jersey had some of the most outlandish fees slapped onto their vehicles. I could hear the gangster music playing while I worked with those guys. Also, I feel bad for anyone that has to buy a car in Pennsylvania. The taxes are bonkers.

    No gap insurance, no undercoating, no nitrogen, no paint protection, no no no. Then tell them you’re going down the street to the other dealership after the offer. You’ll be amazed how much you’ll save. Then leave! Don’t buy nothing

    The silent de valuation of your trade in is even more effective. The person doing the eval will run their fingers over scratches or small dent and check the tread depth and shake their head then have you open the engine bay where he will rub his finger on some greasy part....... ALWAYS sell your trade in to a private party unless you can pawn off a serious malady like a transmission that is going bad after you drive it 10 minutes. They have the pockets to fix it properly and give a car the 30 day warrantly.

    Former car salesman here. Devaluing a trade is not a scam. Once the car is out for resale any potential buyer is going to play that same game and want it cheaper. So it’s to offset that. So pointing out lack of features or dents at appraisal time to devalue a trade is all legit. Buyers will bitch about those same things.

    The keeping your keys thing was real. I doubt it still goes on, but back in the day they’d literally throw your keys on the roof of the building. People would be livid but they’d be stuck for a while and sometimes end up buying a new car 😂

      Call and/or threaten to call the police.
      My dad called the cops one time. Not allowing him to leave with his property. His keys were miraculously found before he got off of the phone w/them.
      In '08/'09 I had to threaten to do the same thing as they wanted used Camry hybrid inventory and were offering "top dollar" for trade-ins. Once there they took my fob and gave it to another guy to test drive/inspect my vehicle. Then the song and dance about how much money they will have to spend to make it worth anything (all BS). I asked for my keys and that I wanted to leave. After 10 min, I asked again, 10 min later. The 3rd time I had my phone out, had 911 on the dialer, showed the guy, and mentioned that he had 30s or I was calling the police. "Mgr" from other office hurriedly shows up and gives me my fob back.
      The only other professions that I dislike to a similar degree are real estate agents and financial advisors/money managers. Any profession that bases their fees on value they did not earn/bring are scammers. E.g. commission based on sale price vs net proceeds or entire portfolio value vs amount their advice increased the portfolio. I have a higher opinion of phone solicitors.

The "good salesman" then sides with the customer and they call the "bad salesman" low and commiserate about him. "While we're getting someone who can get onto the roof to get your keys though, what do you think of this car right here? The manager told us yesterday it was going on sale this weekend, but I bet I can get that price for you today."

    In the UK many dealers lose money on the car itself, and only make it profitable by selling you the finance. Thats why they dont want you paying cash

    Nissan in Riverside CA did REALLY well by us, gave us 3k for our trade in (it was literally worth like 3100 blue book.) IMO, they did VERY well by us, gave us like 1%, better than a credit union, and sold us a pre-owned for like.....2% above the bluebook for private party. IDK how they made money. And that car ran PERFECTLY for a decade.

      Several possibilities:
      1.The car they sold you, dealer bought it wholesale for way less than KBB private party.
      2. Dealer got the car they sold you as a trade in and they lowballed the previous owner.
      3. They actually lost money.

    Depends on the car. Used to sell cars. One time this dude was 30k upside down in his car. Needed to sell it because the sun was better for the twins on the way. In order for it to work he needed to buy a land cruiser and sold it just north of cost to finance the difference. It was insane. I ended up fucked out of the deal, spending 10 hours on it for 100 bucks taxed.

      Feeling so sad for you right now. The worst thing that happened to you is that ONE TIME the customer DIDN'T get absolutely screwed and you only made $100. Compared to all the times they did and you made thousands. Boo hoo. I hope that you were able to recover from this horrible experience where you "got fucked out of the deal."

    I got a way better deal financing through the dealership. 0.99 vs 3.99 at the bank. Its not about who you get the rate through but who is offering the better rate.

    I was looking at a car in my town. They had the car listed online for a price I got there to test drive it and they told me someone had hacked the website and put prices too cheap. Then I sat in the $40k car with the owner whole he smoked a cigarette in it. Then while we were looking under the hood it fell out of his mouth into the engine bay. I left right after that.

    I've bought a lot of cars and a lot of times get offered a job there. Usually I reply with "What and become a scumbag like you? No thanks". It's really simple. It's chess game so be awake and ready. Go in knowing the car you want with the options and it's value. Negotiate EVERYTHING with the salesman. When they talk financing say "We'll get to that later". NO trade in talk until AFTER you lock in the sale price of the vehicle. IF you mention NADA or KBB they will shift to the uncertain "auction pricing", It's BS and tell them you'll go by the standard fixed valuation. Bring a notebook or a coffee..anything that if you pick it up and walk out they'll know you're actually leaving. They have full discretion so they DON'T need to "talk to my manager". Financing guy after that is THE guy who brings the dealership $. Refuse everything he offers and tell him "I have financing all worked out". He'll try to upsell you extended warrantees and stuff but refuse all of it. Don't get gap insurance from them. Get it from your insurance company. Don't roll taxes, sticker, registration, etc into the total value. You don't want to pay interest on that stuff. It's your money and they want as much of it as they can get. So stand firm and be ready to walk at any moment. THEY need your business, you don't need theirs.

    What bothers me the most of hearing these stories are the people who give in to the tactics. I get it but I don't when I shop for a new car (new or used) I do my homework i know what I want for trade in (if I trade in) and what I'm willing to pay. Those are my terms and if they don't give me it I stand extend my hand and say thank you for your time have a great day. One of two things happen they either cave or I walk out. I bought a new SUV about 10 years ago and they wouldn't give me my number on my trade in. I was asking for KBB persona sale number and wasn't budging, salesman gave me this smug look following by we can't give you anywhere near that. Stood up extending my hand, watched him and sales manager faces drop then I got my price. Then I wanted to finance through my credit union, the finance had all kinds of bad things to say about that and I explained to him "you bashing another place does not make feel good about giving you my money". The rate was slightly lower at CU but not why I wanted to finance there and he smugly said are you going to walk away from this deal over $600 dollars..my response was "are you? I don't need a car I would like one". Kept coming with all kinds of reasons why financing with them made sense to which I answered every time "so you are knock $600 dollars off the deal then?" After saying this the 6 time I said I have go so if you change your mind let me know. Guess what he knocked $600 off and I left with the car. Don't waiver from your first numbers and you'll get what you want.

      Good advice and i agree with all that, but many just don't have the spine to stand up for themselves. Doesn't really make sense to me either but i guess some people get so uncomfortable with confrontation that they'll acquiesce to almost anything just to hurry up and get out of there.
      Dealers, of course, know this and prey upon it.

    Typically what I would do is I would bring a mechanic I trust with me via second pair of eyes because I know car is pretty good but what I recommend people do and I bought dozens and dozens and dozens I mean I lost count how many cars I bought and sold I should say thousands or hundreds I mean it's tough taking credit because it's a dealership there's a lot of people anyway my recommendation it costs but if you don't know anyone take it to the manufacturer of the vehicle one of their service centers and if the dealer himself doesn't like that then work something out where you've got time a week a month get it scheduled ahead of time so you can take it in and if it fails something catastrophic over the value of the vehicle for example

    This is why Tesla's model of car sales should become standard now. Regardless of how you feel about the rest of the company, they've got that part correct.
    They don't have any middle men dealerships. All the dealerships/showrooms are owned entirely by Tesla directly. And the prices are universal. Any location you go to buy a car, even online, all the prices are the same, so there's no haggling. And the employees aren't paid by commission, so they don't pressure you to buy. When we went to the one in Cincinnati, they give us an introduction to the car, answered any questions we had, then they just leave you to explore it on your own. That's how it should be everywhere.
    Dealerships are outdated by decades and should be left in the past where they belong.

    Just bought a car 2 weeks ago and they waxed it to cover up all the scratches so when I gave it a carwash they all popped out and then I find out the day after I buy it that there's a recall on the car

    This is a perfect example of how bad the school system is. You should know exactly how financing works. You should know the difference between banks an credit unions. You should understand what a profit margin is. And a lot more. Basic economics, mortgages, civics, sociology, should be required for graduation.
    But you need three years of algebra to go to college.

    F&I folks are pretty good at their jobs!
    You can still allow a trade in if you know what your doing!
    My dad ( a used car dealer for 40 years) once bought a brand new station wagon from a dealer.. when he gave the keys of his trade in the salesmen tossed them on to the roof of the dealership.... He then punched and headlocked that fuck until the police came and got his keys back!

    Traded I'm my 2022 rav4 they gave me exactly how much I bought it for and took 2k off the asking price. Bought a 22 cx5. Just shop around. (New car dealer) now used dealerships this advice would apply.

    Just keep a spare key in your pocket and let them have your key so they think they got you, and when they start to act like they don't have it just write your number down, say "call me when you find it" and get in the car and leave. It makes them scream and cry and pee their pants.

      The huge majority of people drive cars they can't afford. I look around in traffic and know that I make more money than 90% of people driving expensive luxury cars (I'm an experienced software developer), and I drive a 2013 Camry that I plan on running into the ground for another 10 years before I buy another car. Living above your means is something only uneducated people do.

      I am always puzzled why I could buy a new car cheaper than the same model used. That's the major reason I buy new cars, why not just get a new one for the same price. Maybe used car prices advertised are too inflated.

    Here is how you do it. Find a reasonable priced car online (private sale) nationwide and drive it home. That is it...
    Call a mechanic in the area to take a look at it and have him give you the thumbs up if its good to buy and have him do the yearly maintenance, tune up, and oil change, etc...
    You're going to be looking online for 4-5 hours a day for 3 days but you'll save $10k+

      @Jim Rylander That it’s not unusual in fact it is pretty common, Unfortunately in order to get a loan with 0% it requires an excellent credit score which most people could never qualify for!

    Non of this advise is very good. Here's some good advice for buying a car from a dealership.
    Dont ever lease, finance
    For the best deal buy a pre owned car that's still under warranty (you can add nore warranty for a little extra on the payment)
    Tell the dealer immediately when you walk in that you have a fixed amount you're able to put down and pay monthly and if they can't get you that the deal isn't gonna happen
    Ask friends and family where they bought their cars and if they are happy with the experience and go there (and ask for a specific salesman if possible)

    The keys thing happened to me. I could tell something was shady so I asked for them back. I got the same thing they described. Couldn't find the keys until I said give me my fu€k!n keys b!+¢h in the guys face that they magically appeared.
