US policy is leading to a wider war: Jeffrey Sachs on Middle East tensions | UpFront

  • Marc Lamont Hill discusses US policy in the Middle East and the risks of escalation with renowned scholar Jeffrey Sachs.
Six months into Israel’s war on Gaza, fears of a wider conflict in the Middle East are mounting. On April 13, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel in an unprecedented attack. The strike came after Israel’s April 1 bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria that killed two top generals.
Israel vowed retaliation and, less than a week later, reportedly launched a drone strike on Isfahan, in central Iran. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States has “not been involved in any offensive operations”. But the US government has announced new sanctions on Iran, including on its drone production, and urged de-escalation.
So what lies ahead? And is the US doing enough to avert a wider regional conflict?
On UpFront this week, Marc Lamont Hill talks to Columbia University Professor and Special Advisor to the United Nations Jeffrey Sachs about US foreign policy and rising tensions in the Middle East.

Peace is the mirage. When has peace ever existed? Violence is life. False Peace, False Democracy, False Socialism, False Communism… sheep herders meat butchers, fish netting, man slaving. Tell me when there is ever peace. This is about life, consciousness, love. Not peace. Consider the war, death, and life within each biological life form. Peace is when nothing is moving, nothing is going on, no leaves are falling, no clouds are forming. Love and cherish, question all authorities. That’s a must. Taking Advantage is War. Feeding into it is war. Prejudice and racial supremacy is war. Now harmonizing is a real goal. Peace is a carrot in front of a captured domesticated human.

Even worse is the reason the U.S. rep Robert Wood gave: “We have long called on the Palestinian Authority to aundertake necessary reforms to help establish the attributes of readiness for statehood and note that Hamas, a terrorist organisation, is currently exerting power and influence in Gaza - an integral part of the State envisioned in this resolution,” he said.
The U.S. UN representative is not stupid. He knows Hamas' military wing, which (like the IDF) has committed terrorist acts, makes up about a 1/3 of the org while the other 2/3 is a bureaucracy of administrators, politicians, etc. Even if the military wing stopped its operations today Hamas would not suddenly vanish and disappear into thin air. Just a pitifully pathetic excuse to block Palestine's admission into the UN.

Without these guidelines, there would be nothing but war and conflict. Families, communities, states, countries, and the world all need agreements for living together in some kind of mutual understanding. "Order" is not always a bad word. If you're allowed to victimize others, a time will come...and who will protect your rights? It's better to have some agreements to protect everyone. It doesn't work unless everyone does what they agree to do. Like the US and Israel where the rules apy to everyone but them.

    Paradigm shift,
By destroying the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Israel broke international law and endangered world peace. Iran responded in a very balanced way by using its old drones and missiles to do little damage.
If Israel once again celebrates aggression, it will definitely be excluded from the world community.
Iran will be a far more attractive partner for the USA in the Persian Arab region than Israel.
Israel will have to accept this, unless it wants to risk an Iran-Israel war, which would also mean the end of Israel.
A paradigm shift is currently taking place and that is encouraging.
But what we need now is the UN's irrevocable recognition of the Palestinian state so that the Palestinian population can live in security, self-determination and freedom

Membership of The UN won't guarentee Palestinian security but it will prevent them from being denied status as a Nation. Pro-Zionists are very fond of saying that there is and has never been such a Nation as Palestine, as if this justifies the persecution of the indigenous population of this territory.

Iran as a partner for the US? It'll never happen unless the Iranians manage to overthrow their hate filled government. Iran has been spreading hate throughout the region since the 70's. They don't want peace, and they've said that themselves. They're far too unstable, hateful, and radical for the US to ever consider them anything but a problem.
Also you think Iran meant for all their drones to fail? They might say that to try to save face, but that's not what happened. They simply failed.
