    I've put a bunch of miles in both the mesh and knit versions of the new Altra Running Torin 3.5 - I like it and think it's probably the best Torin yet. Of the two, I definitely lean more towards the mesh version (lighter, more breathable and more affordable) but I'm sure there will be some who prefer the knit (much like the escalantes). What do you think of this zero-drop, foot-shaped, go-long shoe?

      Great timing! I'm still looking for a shoe for Tahoe 100 this summer. Being an east coast runner, I'm not sure what to run in for it. These have piqued my interest. Any thoughts on these for that particular race?

      Daniel Fogg isn't that a trail race? Having done other trail races that cover some of the same terrain, I'd go with the Lone Peaks. But, the Torins might be nice to switch to if your feet start to feel it in the later miles.

      Perfect timing for this review, because I am shopping today for another shoe to go with my Altra Duo. I love the way that one feels so, would you get the Torin 3.5, or a speedy shoe like the Escalante to go with it?

    I have been suffering from PF and IT band issues since Dec. ‘18 and been hunting the right shoe for the past couple months. I’m literally one day into this shoe and I’m not saying it’s gone but my pain level has dropped to almost zero. Incredible

    Ran the LA Marathon in the 3.0 did about 150 goin on 200 Miles of training in them before he race and they were set starting to break down by race day. Soon after the uppers began to tear and quickly became un wearable. I had similar problems with the two pairs of Superiors. I run in the Lone Peak 3.0 right now on trails. Super comfy but seem a bit boxy and clumsy. Recently bought a pair of the Topo magnifly 2 and I have been super happy with them. Very responsive yet comfortable shoes. Zero drop, more affordable and so far seem to be very durable. Really want to switch to the Terraventure for trail when my Lone Peaks give out. I think Topo may be a really awesome alternative to Altra in the zero drop/low drop/natural ride market.

    I tried a number of Altra's (Torin 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and the Impulse) and I do agree with the Ginger........The midsole dies pretty quick. I love the first 100 miles in the shoes, but after that I tend to skip them. I love the concept of the Altra's, but I went back to the more "accepted" brands. My go to shoe is the Brooks Glycerine 15 for the long runs.
    Keep it up Ginger man. I love the channel.

    I have experienced premature wear in both the 2.0 and 2.5, making me not a big fan of the shoe. The Bondi 5 from Hoka is now my go to shoe for long road runs. Good to hear Altra is working on improving their shoe.

    • @andrew7650
      @andrew7650 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dan Savage Do you find the cushioning for the Bondi to be firm or soft? I’ve heard the Bondi 5 is more firm than previous versions, the 6 apparently fixed this but the 5 is on discount.

    Atra's are def a buy. I've been running in Torin 2.5's for a few years now straight and they're still holding up great and feel incredible. Thanx for the review. Think I'll pick up a pair of mesh Torins.

  • @KnowledgeKing

    I had a bad case of plantar fasciitis in the past. A friend recommended the ultra Torin. I bought them and loved them (Torin 3.0's). Later I bought the mesh Torin 3.5's and I really like those as well, but was extremely disappointed when the Ultra logo (which feels like vinyl) on the front upper mesh began to peel off 3 to 4 weeks later. Still, great improved shoe, just surprised the quality control people didn't catch this flaw. Next shoe will probably be the Ultra 'torin 3.5 knit version.

  • @MrRobDMarks
    @MrRobDMarks 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've put almost 200 miles in the Torin 3.0's and I felt that 3.5 was not only more comfortable in the midsole, but the upper for the 3.5 was far more locked in around the midfoot. I even felt a bit more softness around the ball of your foot in the 3.5 compared to the 3.0. If you already like Zero drop or are interested in Altra, the 3.5 is a solid entry. Still think the Escalante is Altra's best road shoe though.

    • @sgeorgesuperstar
      @sgeorgesuperstar 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's good to hear. I loved the 2.0 Torin except for the heel disintegrating! The 3.0 was firmer to me and snugger fitting all around but still a great shoe. I love the Torin's for long runs and Escalante for shorter fast runs. I'll be trying this for sure!

  • @michaelrundlett9790
    @michaelrundlett9790 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I owned an earlier version of the touring the one that was red yellow and blue I liked it because they were very soft but had no support. I then thought I would get a more firm shoe and bought the paradigm but on hard runs my knees ache. They are OK for slow recovery runs. I then bought a pair of Torin 3.0. Ilike them a lot and they are a good fit. I just can't run really fast with them. So I'm going to buy a pair of Duo hopefully I'll be able to run harder with those shoes. I'm an old guy and in my earlier years was a pretty good competitive runner. Now I'm trying to get back into it a little bit but not for competition just to run a little faster and a little longer . I am 65! But much younger in body and spirit than my chronology.

    I tried on the Torin 3.0 a few months back and really liked them but I needed a trail shoe at that so I went with the Altra Superior 3.5 (which I love). I knew I'd be back to get some road shoes so I had my eye on the Torin for my return visit. They put me the Torin 3.5 Mesh and I thought they were amazing! I started to say I'll take them but the store owner (a really nice guy) actually had me try the Torin 3.0 again and mentioned they were on sale. I left with 3.0...I'm cheap ;)

    I ran in the Altra Torin 2.5 for 9 months. I put between 1200 and 1500 ams on them. I did not have issues with wear on the upper or with the heal and ankle fit. What wore out on me was the sole. They were pretty trashed by the end of all those kilometres on the road.
    I loved the zero drop but couldn't get used to the thick cushioning. At times it felt like I was running in a ski boot, a really soft, worn-out ski boot, but a ski boot.
    My next shoe was the Altra One V3. I am still running in it. I love it. It is lighter and a little firmer under foot. I am about a month away from these shoes being done. I am strongly considering another pair of One's to replace them. I would like to try the Solstice and the Vanish-R however. Cushioning is not a big priority for me as I have never had issues with my feet.
    Would I buy another pair of Torins? Probably if I were to start to increase my weekly run distance beyond 40-50 km I would have them as a shoe for long, slow, easy days.

      I have run three half-marathons in the Torin 2.5 and love how comfortable they are. The problem I had is the sole under my heels deteriorated pretty quickly. As a Utahn I wanted to be happy with the local company so I am a bit disappointed. I bought a pair of Hoka Napali's which I am loving so far. I do use Lone Peaks as my trail running shoe. I am glad to see I am not the only one with a sole problem.

    Have ran in the torin 2.0, had the same problem with the EVA midsole. Great out of the box but started to lose it pop around the 200 km to 300 km mark, but the upper held up very well. I still wear it as a casual shoe as it is so comfortable. Love the Foot shape toe box. looking at the Duo for my next shoe at the moment.

    Totally agree re the Ego midsole - they should just stick it under everything now. It’s like Boost, responsive, doesn’t flatten out. But with less under the heel than a typical Adidas - Escalante being a good example

  • @DaleHawkins
    @DaleHawkins 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have put many miles on my Torins in the past. However, the model just prior to this one (the 3.0?), added a piece of material (vinyl? some other plastic?) right over the big toe. So I skipped that version. I found a few pairs if the version that I did like and used those until they died. Lately, I have been doing all of my runs in various pairs of Lone Peaks, even the road miles. But, thanks to this review, I might check these shoes out again.

    I own both the 2.5 and 3.0's. I had the same problem with the midsole. I LOVE the shoes. Just wish they lasted longer. I have sent a pair back because of this problem and ALTRA does honor their 1 year warranty but who wants to be without a shoe for a week or two. I have switched to Hokas but will be more than happy to switch back when ALTRA gets the issue fixed. I was hoping that when they sold out that the TNF would go with a different midsole.

    Have been trying out the Altra Torin knit. It is a bit heavier than I'm used to in comparison to the Escalante, but I believe it will work well for my long slow runs. This is not a "fast running" shoe! I still prefer the Escalante for that. I'm considering trying the mesh version but I do love knit uppers.

    Ethan, I am running in some Timp Trails right now and have another new pair ordered. I too have experienced the initial steep determination of cushion from these Altras in the first 50-100 Miles. But they have now become more consistent in the last 100-400 miles of running. I have a theory and I will test it with my new Timps when they arrive. I am wondering if Altra’s footbed material is the main culprit of the initial steep cushioning decline, more so than the midsole material? I have noticed my footbeds are simply crushed and are very Birkenstock like now with a deep foot impression present. I am 150 lbs, so not a big guy. I am going to take the footbeds out of my old pair and new pair and run them both and compare their respective cushioning without the footbed present to see if my theory is true. So, I wonder if Altra simply needs to address their footbed material in all their shoes, more so than their midsole materials? Thanks for the great reviews.

  • @JeremyWentzell
    @JeremyWentzell 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had the same problem with the 3.0. The midsole was very lively out of the box but after around 150 km they really flattened out. They’re still very comfortable for walking in but they were moved out of the running rotation. I have yet to have that problem with the ego midsole on the Escalante and have put 5x the km’s on them.

    I have two pairs of the Torin 3.0's, the Lone Peak 3.5's, Paradigm 3.0's, and Escalante's.. I love them all. Like I said on the Facebook post, I got 20% off the Torin 3's, because the 3.5's were out, so I took the sure thing, cheaper.. :) I really wish that they made a max-cush neutral. I love the cush of the Paradigm, but they make my knees a little wonky and achy. I don't like shoes telling me what to do. The Torin is my everyday runner, and I love them- but for longer runs, I would like just a touch more cush. I don't think I have ever ran in my Escalante's- I don't feel a lot of lateral stability in the knit. If I don't have them laced tight enough, I can damn near roll them completely around my foot and walk on the side. I might whip them out for a 5k or something in the future, since you all love them so much.
    I hesitate to run right out and plunk $130 bucks on the "new" version, because unfortunately, the old version is usually better. (Listen up, ASICS.. Talking Nimbus here..) The shoe gods have a way of making a good thing "better" until it is completely unusable. Since you have blessed the 3.5's, though, I might give them a try.

    Ethan, thanks as always for your excellent videos and terrific channel, always offering the best to us. A question please. I'm considering giving a zero drop shoe some serious consideration both for road running and trail hiking. The Altra seems a good quality shoe but when I read the specs the tall 25mm stack height I see gives me concern especially on rails. My concern is the height may cause potential ankle twisting issues. Your thoughts and insight are truly appreciated, Sir and in advance, Thanks!

    I have done many miles in the Torin and love them. The 3.0 was my favorite so far. Just purchased the 3.5 mesh and can't wait to try. The sizing issue is frustrating, lone peak 3.5 had to go 1 full size up?? Don't understand why Altra can't get this right. Love the shoe and the brand but it sizing seems to be getting worse every year.

    I love the whole Altra line. I agree that the mid-sole flattening out is an issue. That I can accept but, I have serious complaint about out-sole durability on all their road shoes. I rarely get more than 100 miles out of their road shoes before the out-sole is scrubbed off. Their trail shoes do not have an issue with out-sole wear at all. It seems to me that the out-sole is an integral cushioning component on the Torin, therefore it is overly soft and prone to excessive wear.
    With feet gnarled from 40+ years of running, Altras with their wide toe-box, foot-shape and zero-drop are my go-to shoes. I just wish they were more durable.

    General Altra question...has anyone else experienced hot spots on the balls of their feet running in Altras? I love the pairs I have (Instinct 4 and Superior 3.5), but 8-10 miles into my run I start to get hot spots. I’m thinking my foot is too narrow for the shoes and I can’t lock in the forefoot, which sucks because they’ve helped with my mid-foot strike. Any recommendations?

    Oh man I have such a bad first impression with Altra and it's such a shame. Got the paradigm 1.5 in discount (than God) and after 100 road miles the outsole is completely wasted. I love how they feel, but I'm so hesitant to buy a new pair.

      RasTweet2 find one of the model with less exposed EVA material like the Escalante

      Yeah I thought about that as well. But if you (=Altra) make a shoe and say it's a road shoe it should handle roads better. Just feels like such a rookie mistake. Did they even test the shoe? 100miles in a shoe isn't that much. Surely a test batch should've pointed that problem out. And in my mind I go "what if they don't properly test the rest of their line up?" It's already difficult to find the whole altra line up in Belgium :-( tbh I think I'm gonna give hoka's a try.

      RasTweet2 yea I agree - I have one pair of Paradigm and experienced the same. I like the more minimal versions. Escalante’s are my favorite - I think the new 1.5s are coming out in July

      Did you got hurt or felt uncomfortable? For me any mile in a shoe that's uncomfortable is one too much.
      Perhaps there's an option to resole them with the Vibram material.

    Altra ego shouldn’t be in every shoe in their line! It’s decent stuff but for people who don’t want a super plush bouncy ride, it’s obviously not great. Adidas has lost a lot of customers because they have boost in all their running shoes.

      Sure, agreed. I'd be just as happy with a foam that doesn't break down so quickly.

      I love the torins, and I also love that Altra never changes the midsoles, really. They play around with uppers but you know what you're gonna get, you know how it's going to feel at 100 miles. It's so much better than companies trying to constantly "update" for no real reason. The same reason Ethan loves his same Kinvaras year after year, I know I will be getting the same thing with Escalantes and Torins.

      Mike McKnight hey there, I’m a big fan of Altra and run in the Torins a lot. When he suggested you put Ego in the shoe I said the above comment. I didn’t mean you guys put it in all shoes right now, I meant I’d hate to see it in all Altra shoes. Sorry for the mix up.

    disappointing they couldn't improve the durability of the midsole. the 3.0s were the same for me... after 80 or so miles you can really feel it wearing out

    Argh! Bend the darn shoe and show us where they flex and how they torque! Over 8 minutes you're holding it... sneak it in next time. So frustrating.
