  • In this video we look at the operating history of Hyliion, a company that went public via SPAC in 2020 promising to revolutionize the transportation industry with their hybrid electric drivetrains for semi-trucks. But recently they've abandoned their core business and are instead commercializing a diesel electric generator.

    I just can't see GE selling a potentially game changing technology. My thoughts, GE knows it's not the magic they wanted it to be so dumped it. But, great video guys! y'all are awesome!

    At 3:03 ... I think when you factor in supply chain issues during COVID, inflation, relying on OEMs for rolling chassis (late deliveries due to high demand during/after COVID) and the final nail in the coffin - the 12L Cummins engine they designed their system around being phased out for a more expensive 15L that would require re-certification, and California banning all ICE trucks - even hybrids at the the shipping docks ... it's not a shock the cost to build the trucks vs what it costs to buy a new or lightly used diesel today - a economics of a new hybrid in the near future became untenable. *Hyliion never intended to sell large volumes of turn-key trucks in the future, instead their plan was to sell engineered electrified solutions to OEMs* . They did prove their efficiency gains during trials - they just didn't add up to the cost of buying an ERX at the "new" price despite incentives. In the automotive world, hybrids often outperform their pure ICE counterparts by up to 30% so I don't think efficiency was the issue. Most trial drivers liked the trucks.

    The generator market is expected to reach $ 55.3 billion over the next 10 years BTW - plenty of room for new ideas to blossom.

    I'm very disappointed in Hyliion. Without revenue it's definitely heading towards bankruptcy. My heart goes out to everyone who was bamboozled by this company.

    GE would not sell a R&D research project with 50% efficiency to a startup, they would develop the product themselves. They sold the product to recoop invested funds to move on to the next research product. No way they are getting 50% efficiency on this product, this would be a major energy break-thru.........

    • @adampowell2144

      GE was breaking into separate divisions at the time - the Karno tech didn't match their power divisions focus on large gas turbines. Of the $37 million purchase price, GE Additive took approximately $22 million in Hyliion stock as partial payment.

      @@ivantuma7969 Thanks for info. It's not only about selling the R&D. In this case, very suspious of a 50% energy efficiency product........no thermodynamic principals or products have this type of efficiency

    Flawed, bogus video. He compared KARNO electricity generation cost when running on diesel to the cost to buy from the grid, and based his declaration it would not be cost effective on that comparison. Must have forgot that KARNO is fuel agnostic and would not be running on diesel, it will be running on natural gas, 1/4 the price of diesel.
    And no need for fuel transportation costs to haul in diesel fuel, a natural gas line will be coming into the building.
    And he also totally missed the excess heat from the KARNO that can be used to heat the building, which as Josh explained in the fireside chat takes efficiency into the 90's percentage and makes KARNO a no brainer.

      probably only in remote locations ... line gas is probably the sweet spot for the market. In certain locations, nat gas includes RNG ... and in the future it can have up to 20% green or red hydrogen included with the gas to stay within safety margins

    The idea is to hook the Karno generator to existing gas supplies - not necessarily (although optional) to have an on-sight fuel supply. So you pay for gas, rather than for all the grid maintenance and surcharges. Projections say that in a state like California, 20% of natural gas can come from renewable sources, while another 20% could be hydrogen (either red or green hydrogen if one wants ot include _renewable_ hydrogen in the mix).

    Love listening to you guys break down companies - thank you. Not all parts of the world have access to reliable electricity, or access is limited/non-existent. In those cases this could be the primary source, and even if it is truly only 20% more efficient, that's still a better investment. There is still the question of why GE would sell it though if it was so great? Also how do they have $300 million "debt free" - where did that money come from??

    • @darkjudge8786
      @darkjudge8786 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Places with limited or no access to electricity tend to be like that for a reason. One of them being unable to pay for it.

    • @bobchipman4473

      @darkjudge8786 In the US atleast, there is a fairly decent sized market for generators for off-the-grid houses or houses that suffer frequent outages.
      Especially here in California where there are two week long outages at least once a year these days. A more efficient generator would be a good investment.

    • @ivantuma7969
      @ivantuma7969 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      GE sold it for partial payment in Hyliion stock ... I think the biggest risk with the Karno is production ramp-up capability for the 3D printed components. They've gotten rid of any 3D components that don't need to be 3D printed. They still have the semi truck patents where they could re-introduce the Karno in a truck in a future.

    • @ivantuma7969
      @ivantuma7969 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      GE's new power division focuses exclusively on large turbine technology - the Karno didn't really fit into their business model.

    I'd just like to impart that electricity in high volume IS NOT available just anywhere. The kind of power demands being discussed in DATACENTERS, EV charging stations, etc. IS ENORMOUS! Grid independence is a real issue.

    I see a day where these Karno Generators will be using waste (normally flared) fuels to power EV Charging in remote locations...add on methane from waste sites, agriculture operations, etc. Question is, can they sale off the ERX developement patents and technology to raise money. They are currently benefitting from an announced stock repurchase...but I do think this is worth watching.

    Can you cover AQST? Aquestive Therapeutics has an FDA decision date set for April 28th on Libervant, could potentially see a run, similar to a previous instance where their stock doubled in the three months leading up to an FDA decision date and now it’s the second attempt and they have better trials and much more data. They also now have all buy and strong buy ratings with a few price target increases for 2024. Could be a great swing play imo

  • @nadahere
    @nadahere 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    James, not that I'm a fan of Hyliion, but just past the 9 minute mark, u probably shouldn't get so hung up on what are probably misstatements. I do the same after talking endlessly about our ultra-efficient FAZE engine tech. 50ish percent efficiency probably refers to the different efficiencies using various fuels and other factors that can effect efficiency. I also do this.
    The cost analysis around 13 minutes is flawed as you are using retail diesel costs. That's not the way a prudent person would go. They'd plug into low cost NG or bulk heating oil. Commercial and institutional entities are afforded wholesale prices and that's probably the reference point. I use garbage trucks as a reference point.
    Seems you lack breadth and depth of knowledge and experience.

    Your guy’s numbers are all out of wack. The karno will be primarily ran off of natural gas NOT ULSD . So your 4$ a gallon doesn’t add up yet most cities make prime power from ULSD . So Thomas numbers of .08 does add up when CNG/RNG is half the price of ULSD

    Yeah these guys are definitely lying about the 50% efficiency, that’s pretty much theoretically impossible. The real benefit could be to the ability to scavenge heat off of the generator for space and water heating of a building which might actually allow for it to be ‘technically’ 50% efficient
