    I confess that I've never cared about or watched MLS till Messi came over. How messed up is it that it took a foreigner to make me care about one of my country's sports? But that's just Messi. He's undeniable even by people who don't even watch soccer.

      As an MLS fan since I started watching the sport in 2014 it's tempting to wanna gatekeep all the new fans, "You should've been supporting the domestic league this whole time, Yada Yada".
      But no, I'm just happy there are people like yourself with MLS on their radar now! Hoping even just 10% of the new eyeballs Messi has brought in stick around in the years after he retires.
      Hope you make it out to a match live as well man. Until then, keep enjoying the insanity that is MLS

      Honestly man, MLS is fun
      See the thing is, we’re spoiled with our traditional Big 4 men’s leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) because these are the most elite leagues for their sport in the world. The pinnacle of their sport.
      MLS *isn’t* the most elite soccer league in the world, of course, but that’s 100% OK 😅 It’s still perfectly decent, about the quality of a European league like the Belgian league

    Only a matter of time before before someone snatches up Benjamin Cremaschi (inter Miami #30).
    He had a great tournament. He's a local kid, academy product. Born in the US and an Argentinian dual national - speaks English with a slight Spanish accent, 18 years old. He played in the attacking midfielder role with Messi, Busquets, and Alba as if he'd been doing it for years.
    Messi is now in a position to win an American double on a last place team. That's insane.

    Inter Miami now have the uphill task of needing roughly 30 points from 12 games in order to qualify for the MLS playoffs. With Messi playing so far, they would have 5 wins and 2 draws at the end of regular time, which is so close to being good enough.

    I'd like to see the day that the MLS has a high floor with team payrolls similar at least NHL, and there is still 3 DPs for world class "difference makers" could be a very interesting, competitive and deep league, that probably only the EPL would compete with. Because most leages only really have 2 to maybe 6 real contenders every year.

  • @japcar84

    Does anyone know, in the European league finals and cups or international competitions, can you have the same player kick penalties after the fifth penalty has been taken (repeat penalty takers after 5 tries for each team)? I thought that is how it works in Europe and International competitions. But I sort of like the Leagues Cup/MLS way of requiring everyone in the lineup to take a penalty before any player can be used again, because it created keeper vs. keeper to decide the game.

    • @AJ_Shores
      @AJ_Shores ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Same rules in Europe. All 11 have to go before #1 can go twice.

  • @orlanmejia
    @orlanmejia ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In regards to penalty alternatives, have y'all seen how the MLS first did penalties in the 90s? There was a runup and a 1v1 against the goalie and those were exciting. Don't know why they changed it, but I can assume to match the tradition of the sport everybody else does.

    I agree with you Daz, penalties are a crapshoot at best. I have been advocating for golden goal for a long time. I think 11 vs. 11 could be kept. Just allow an extra sub every 15 mins of extra time and allow players that were subbed off during regular time to be subbed back in. Everyone always says that it can't be done because it will lead to injuries. I say to them look at that the NHL (National Hockey League) playoffs. Sudden death overtime with 6'7" 240 lbs guys on skates. They make it work, and injuries are not a big part of their overtimes.

  • @d_Howard
    @d_Howard ปีที่แล้ว

    Nah. I disagree about finishing a tied game with penalties. Here in the US, the biggest complaint against soccer is the low scoring. Also, the game can be boring watching teams endlessly pass the ball around, and making no effort to go to goal.
    Basketball scores are often over 100 points for 1 team!
    American Football has several ways to accumulate points: a touchdown = 6 points; the PAT = 1 point (Point After Touchdown); Field goal = 3 points; safety = 2 points. Scores can be in the 30s and 40s.
    Baseball scores can be in double digits. Hockey is exciting no matter what the score, with endless fast breaks, crushing checks, and the occasional fist fight!
    In soccer, if the game is tied after 90 minutes, plus two15 minute overtime periods, penalty shots can solve the problem of a low scoring, boring, pass-the-ball-around-forever game. In a penalty shootout, all the drama and excitement we love in sports is present! Plus there's a lot of goals, fantastic saves, agonizing misses and exciting finishes.
    The problem with extending time so the game ends without penalties is that it takes a huge toll on the players who may have little time to recover between matches. Torn muscles and cramps happen late in most games when players are tired. In the Leagues Cup, matches were 4-5 days apart for 3 weeks for the 2 teams in the final. Players are more likely to resort to desperation slide tackles when they're tired, making collisions (injuries!) more likely.
    I think it was a good idea to forego extra time in the event of a tie at full time and go straight to PKs.
